Matt aka Stormageddon emerges from a pipe to surprise Case and Sam with the power up of a movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie! Can they make it through with only three continues? Music by Vin Macri and Matt Brogan Podcast Edited by Sophia Ricciardi Overview In the podcast recording discussion titled "Another Pass at The Super Mario Bros Movie," hosts Case Aiken and Sam Alicea, joined by guest Matt (Stormageddon), delve into their cinematic experiences of the 2023 film, praising its 92-minute runtime and appeal to both children and nostalgic adult fans. They highlight standout performances, notably Jack Black as Bowser and Anya Taylor-Joy as a proactive Princess Peach, while critiquing Chris Pratt's portrayal of Mario as merely average. The hosts discuss the film's visual splendor and numerous Easter eggs, though they express disappointment over its reliance on pop music rather than classic Mario compositions. Despite some criticisms of the plot's formulaic nature and suggestions for improvement, the overall consensus is positive, deeming the film entertaining while respecting the franchise's legacy; potential sequels and upcoming projects are also touched upon as they conclude the episode. 2/7/25 - Hour 2 Actor-comedian Keegan-Michael Key joins Rich at Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans where he makes a bold prediction about the Chiefs and Eagles, what a KC three-peat would mean for the Brady-Belichick Patriots dynasty, discusses his Penn State fandom, and more. Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith tells Rich why Eagles RB Saquon Barkley, not Bills QB Josh Allen, should have won the NFL's MVP award, if Deion Sanders would have been a good choice to be the Dallas Cowboys head coach, and reveals why he's cheering for the Eagles to beat the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Rich weighs in on the surprisingly small 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class announced at the NFL Honors show, and says why Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen is “100% worthy” of the NFL's MVP award. Wonka is a 2023 musical fantasy comedy film directed by Paul King, who co-wrote the screenplay with Simon Farnaby based on a story by King. It tells the origin story of Willy Wonka, a character in the 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, depicting his early days as a chocolatier.[6] The film stars Timothée Chalamet as the title character, with an ensemble cast including Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Olivia Colman, and Hugh Grant. It is the third live-action film based on Dahl's novel, following Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005).
As J Mo rapidly approaches (or has perhaps already passed?) 3000 films watched all-time on Letterboxd, it felt fitting to kick off a new year with the story of another man who thought he'd hit the 3000 plateau only for it to be taken away from him on a technicality, as we try to whip ourselves back in to game-shape for 2025 by watching a sports comedy that's a little too light on laughs. It's 2004's Mr. 3000, directed by Charles Stone III, and starring Bernie Mac, Angela Bassett, Michael Rispoli, Dondré Whitfield, Paul Sorvino, Chris Noth, Keegan-Michael Key, Dane Cook and Tom Arnold. While the movie never really finds its groove comedically, it's still a charming sports twist on the cocky-hothead-gets-humbled archetype that does a great job of using existing teams, leagues and sports TV shows to make the whole thing feel somewhat real. This is to say nothing of Bernie Mac, who has more than enough charisma to carry this even when the script isn't entirely where it needs to be. Plus: we take a good half-hour off the top of the first show of the new year to countdown our duelling lists of the Top Ten Films of 2024. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, Mr. 3000 is currently free to stream in Canada on Hoopla. Other works discussed in this episode include The Substance, Juror No. 2, Twisters, Will & Harper, Civil War, Longlegs, Hit Man, I Saw The TV Glow, The Wild Robot, The Fall Guy, Conclave, Love Lies Bleeding, La Chimera, Dune: Part Two, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Challengers, Woman of the Hour, Carry-On, Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro, Cuckoo, Red One, Ladder 49 and National Treasure, among countless others. We'll be back next week with a little ADHD-VHS, as Hayley puts her newly-acquired VCR to work watching a movie on tape that is new to her: 1993's The Fugitive, with Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones, that is currently streaming north of the border on Starz. And later in the month, we'll be circling back to our man Bernie Mac as January's canon consideration is 2001's Ocean's Eleven! Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Send us a textWhat do a Christmas werewolf film and a PG-13 family comedy have in common? They both challenge our perception of traditional holiday movies and leave us with a head-scratching blend of humor and horror. In this episode, we unpack the strange timing of a werewolf film's December release and imagine the hilarity of a festive lycanthrope tale. We then confront the perplexing narrative of the Farrelly brothers' "Dear Santa," where Jack Black's devilish charm collides with a dyslexic boy's Satan-summoning error. The film's bizarre plot twists—ranging from arm wrestling with Beelzebub to the peculiar Swedish Fish product placements—leave us questioning the filmmakers' comedic intent and their audience's amusement. Our conversation takes a turn as we critique the film's mishandling of profound themes like grief. Parents' emotional arcs are abruptly dismissed, and the soundtrack, which usually shines in Jack Black's projects, disappoints with its lack of coherence. We chuckle and groan over an ill-conceived subplot about a missing angel tree topper and the unrealistic portrayal of lying without consequence. The cross-eyed narrative even dares to include Post Malone playing beer pong with a kid—a misguided attempt at humor that skews the film's demographic even further.Amongst this chaos, Keegan-Michael Key stands out, proving that a handful of nuts and his improvisational prowess can inject life into even the flattest scenes. We discuss how humor can sometimes be uncomfortable and how it can resonate emotionally, albeit awkwardly, with the audience. As we wrap up, we express our appreciation for Jack Black's commitment, despite this misadventure, and tease future explorations of more promising cinematic ventures like "Alien: Romulus" and the quirky Coen Brothers' "The Hudsucker Proxy." Join us for this wild ride as we dissect the bizarre blend of holiday cheer, comedy, and questionable narrative choices.Written Lovingly with AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT

He gains the mentorship of Macrinus (Denzel Washington), a former slave and ambitious arms dealer with his own designs on power. As Lucius rises through the ranks of gladiators, he discovers his true heritage and confronts the political machinations of Rome, mirroring the journey of his father, Maximus. The film features intense combat sequences, including battles against exotic animals like rhinos and sharks, and delves into themes of revenge, identity, and the quest for justice. While it expands on the original's narrative, some critics note that it lacks the emotional depth of its predecessor. Nonetheless, “Gladiator II” offers a visually spectacular experience with strong performances, particularly from Washington, who brings a compelling presence to the role of Macrinus. “Gladiator II” was released in theaters on November 22, 2024, and has received generally positive reviews from critics. Transformers One (2024) Out of 10 I’d Want to Kill Orion Pax Toos Darryl: 6.25/10 Brian: 6.4/10 Summary “Transformers One” is a 2024 American animated science fiction action film that explores the origins of the iconic characters Optimus Prime and Megatron. Directed by Josh Cooley, the film features a star-studded voice cast, including Chris Hemsworth as Orion Pax (who becomes Optimus Prime) and Brian Tyree Henry as D-16 (who becomes Megatron). Set on the planet Cybertron, the narrative delves into the early relationship between Orion Pax and D-16, who start as close friends bonded like brothers. As the story unfolds, their differing ideologies lead to a rift, setting the stage for the epic conflict between Autobots and Decepticons. The film also introduces other key characters, such as Elita-1 (voiced by Scarlett Johansson) and B-127 (voiced by Keegan-Michael Key), providing a rich backstory to the Transformers universe. “Transformers One” premiered in Sydney, Australia, on September 11, 2024, and was released in the United States on September 20, 2024. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its storytelling, animation, and voice performances. However, it underperformed at the box office, grossing approximately $128.9 million worldwide against a budget estimated between $75 million and $147 million. For those interested in watching the film, “Transformers One” is available for streaming on Paramount+. Superman and Lois (The CW) Out of 5 Never Trust a Human Hearts Darryl: 4.45/5 Brian: 4.35/5 Summary In the penultimate episode of “Superman & Lois,” titled “To Live and Die Again,” the series sets the stage for a climactic finale. The episode features the return of Doomsday, now portrayed in a highly comic-accurate form, intensifying the threat to Superman and his family. The narrative delves into the aftermath of Superman's public revelation of his dual identity as Clark Kent, exploring the personal and societal ramifications of this disclosure. Additionally, Lois Lane receives a positive update regarding her battle with breast cancer, marking a significant moment in her character arc. The episode culminates in an emotional cliffhanger, setting up a high-stakes confrontation in the series finale. This installment effectively balances action and character development, paving the way for a compelling conclusion to the series. Dune: Prophecy (HBO Max) Out of 10 Burn in My Lights Darryl: 7.75/10 Brian: 7.1/10 Summary “Dune: Prophecy” is a prequel series set 10,000 years before the events of Frank Herbert's “Dune,” focusing on the origins of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood. Here's a summary of the first two episodes: Episode 1: “The Hidden Hand” The series opens with Mother Superior Raquella Berto-Anirul (Cathy Tyson) leading the fledgling Sisterhood on Wallach IX. She entrusts Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) with the mission to expand and fortify the Sisterhood's influence. Valya, driven by her family's tarnished legacy, employs the Sisterhood's secretive breeding program and mental conditioning to manipulate political dynamics across the Imperium. A significant plot involves the arranged marriage between Princess Ynez Corrino (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) and young noble Pruwet Richese (Charlie Hodson-Prior), orchestrated to stabilize the Imperial bloodline. However, the emergence of Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), a mysterious soldier with newfound powers from Arrakis, disrupts these plans. Desmond's actions culminate in the simultaneous deaths of Pruwet and Imperial Truthsayer Kasha Jinjo (Jihae), signaling a formidable threat to the Sisterhood's schemes. Episode 2: “Two Wolves” In the aftermath of the dual assassinations, Valya seeks to counter Desmond's menace. She travels to Salusa Secundus to interrogate Desmond, who openly admits to the killings, revealing his immunity to the Sisterhood's manipulative techniques like “The Voice.” Meanwhile, on Wallach IX, young acolyte Lila undergoes “The Agony,” a perilous ritual intended to unlock ancestral memories. During this process, Lila encounters the spirit of Raquella, who imparts cryptic warnings about impending dangers. The episode delves into the internal dynamics of the Sisterhood, highlighting the challenges Valya faces in consolidating power amid external threats and internal dissent. These episodes lay the groundwork for a complex narrative of political intrigue, mystical traditions, and the struggle for dominance within the Imperium.
