Harold is a military vet who served in the United States military in the early 70's. His struggle with PTSD (or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) affected him for 50 years until he found the world of CNC routers and making CNC projects with his Next Wave Shark HD 520 CNC router. CNC routers gave him something to occupy his mind with something to look forward to, and in his words, "finding a purpose". When we have something to look forward to, PTSD and depression are diminished. Many cope with PTSD for years and are not sure how to cope with it or overcome PTSD. I am no expert on PTSD, and Harold taught me more about it than I ever knew. I have learned that PTSD is not just a factor of military experiences. But can be from any traumatic incident in life, such as losing a child, a car accident, witnessing something violent, an abusive relationship, etc. But there are many forms of PTSD, and the symptoms are far and wide. But I personally feel anything that can give someone purpose will lessen the feeling of I'm not good enough or even suicidal thoughts. Many former military personnel has turned to CNC machines for 'PTSD therapy'. Even those who served in law enforcement, EMS and those who served on fire departments. We see CNC routers making beautiful things and there is a draw to see more. Then, one day, we find ourselves researching the machines and before we know it, we want to buy one. Then we get scared and hold off for months. What is it that holds us back from our creative selves? I think it's just because it is such new territory that is so strange to us. What worries me is how some people will hold off for years, even a lifetime, while their creative spirit calls them to create. If you are drawn to this CNC router stuff and it doesn't go away, then your spirit is telling you it's time to CREATE. This episode talks about the BobsCNC Evolution series routers. Routers made of wood. Yes, wood. And they perform far beyond what I ever expected. what impressed me about the BobsCNC the most was the 'sittin' at the kitchen table' kind of feel from their business model. Considering a CNC router but not so sure. Take a look at Bob's. I do many Youtube videos on it, as well. Happy CNC'ing! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/cnc-for-beginners/support
One of the most unusual things you can do on a CNC router is engraving. Most CNC'ers don't realize they can engrave. Glass, soft metals, acrylic, and other materials. Not hard metals. though. My favorite is glass engraving. The type of tool you use to engrave is called a drag bit. Because it drags. The router motor or spindle is not turned on but the CNC part still does its job, moving around the project as you programmed. This YouTube video shows it in action with amazing backlighting on glass I did I remember to mention the tool I use is also used by NASA. The Widgetworks diamond engraver. NASA and Widgetworks...an interesting combination of names. The diamond engraver is found here if you want to look at it. The full list of links are in the YouTube video description. The router bit starter set I spoke of for CNC router beginners can be seen here. Happy CNC'ing!
