This episode features Becky Harris of Catoctin Creek Distilling Company . Becky and Scott founded Catoctin Creek in 2009. At the time there were about 200 distilleries in the United Sates and 6 in Virginia. They began with a vision of making rye whiskey which was "the whiskey" up until prohibition in the Mid-Atlantic States. At Cotoctin they use batch pot still distillation. This is the key to deriving the most flavor from the rye grain. In the beginning it was difficult to get farmers to take a chance on this little craft distillery. Today those farmers are glad that they did. Catoctin produces some of the finest rye whiskey's. Combine that with the delicious cocktails in the tasting room and you have a recipe for continued growth and success. We enjoyed our fascinating conversation about history, the spirits industry and Catoctin Creek Distilling. 120 W Main St, Purcellville, VA 20132 - (540) 751-8404 - www.CatoctinCreekDistilling.com - Facebook Highlights from our discussion: Every Home a Distillery American Craft Spirit Association Mt. Every once and a while, I fire up a retro game that I missed back in its heyday, and it rocks my world so hard that I spend the next week kicking myself for not playing it sooner. Shadow of the Colossus is one of those games. Its controls leave a little to be desired, but everything else about it is just, beautiful. The story, bosses, music, graphics are all spectacular, and there's no fat to be found. 'Less is more' should be this game's motto. It's a legitimate work of art. This week's episode was sponsored by RTG community member JohnnyCCDC over on Patreon, and I can't thank him enough for the support, and for showing me the error of my non-Colossi battling ways. We have a nice chat about why this game scratches him where he itches, and then my buddy Miklos manipulated his way back onto the podcast (and by that, I mean I called him), and we broke it down for another hour or so. All kind of Colossus goodness over here this week! And before we talk about Colossus shadows, I drop another steaming edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro' on ya! This week, we talk about our hopes for Sony's rumoured 'PlayStation Spartacus' service. We talk about the legendary Bebop and Rocksteady, and which iteration of them is best. And how much longer will physical video games be a thing? PLUS, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', featuring three of the PS2's best: GTA: San Andreas, Metal Gear Solid 3, and Silent Hill 2. Are you on social media? Of course you are. So follow us! We are located in Purcellville, Virginia, in the heart of the Loudoun Valley. Virginia is the birthplace of American whiskey, and at Catoctin Creek, we faithfully dedicate ourselves to that tradition, producing Virginia's most awarded whisky—Roundstone Rye! The name "Catoctin" is a regional name. Pronounced Ka-TOCK-tin, the name derives from the Indian tribal name "Kittocton" which, legend has it, meant "place of many deer". Catoctin describes a range of mountains and the eponymous creek which flows picturesquely past the distillery and into the Potomac River and Chesapeake Watershed. At Catoctin Creek, we believe in high quality food and spirits. We source our grain and fruit from local sources, free of pesticides and chemical additives that would come through in the spirits we produce. The results are the finest, cleanest spirits possible, with the greatest attention to detail in every single bottle we produce.”

The victims were all patients of the VA hospital where Reta Mays worked as a nurse's assistant. It was discovered that the vets had been killed, mostly, with unprescribed insulin injections while they had all been under her care. Due to the nature of this episode's case, and in remembrance of the veterans who were killed, we are providing a link to the Clarksburg Louis A. Johnson Medical Center, where you can find resources to volunteer or donate to their hospital. This includes support for their Health Care for Homeless Veterans program. https://www.va.gov/clarksburg-health-care/work-with-us/volunteer-or-donate/

Coach Chris from The Endurance Edge talks with the folks at Triangle Bikeworks, a local youth bike touring organization whose mission is to strengthen the power of youth who are Black, Latine, Indigenous, Asian, and People Of Color to overcome challenges, achieve audacious goals, and discover their true selves.Triangle Bikeworks is a non-profit that is completely free for youth. In fact, just about everything is completely youth-led. Kevin is the executive director and one of the founders. He loves cycling and "believes bikes are your first introduction to freedom.” He did a pilot program with seven youths, where they rode 60 miles on donated mountain bikes and they loved it! Itza, who is now the Program Director, was one of those people who completed the pilot program. Next, they did a 30 day, 1800 mile long trip from Mobile, AL to Niagara Falls to talk about the environment, travel, learn about history and camp along the way (only stopping at hotels if there's inclement weather). They have also done trips to the Underground Railroad, the path of Lois and Clark, and more. Now they focus on 2 week tours, including Cherokee Trail of Tears, and the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor (from Durham to Wilmington to St Augustine, FL) to learn about the environment and untold history. Itza tells several stories about how this experience has impacted her and how she's learned so much more through this program than from learning it in school. She notes that youth come to the program for different reasons including getting outside, learning more, traveling, meeting people and more. While they enter wanting to learn one thing, she notes that they learn something entirely different, including leadership skills, teamwork and more. They invite the entire community to do virtual tours and lunch and learns. You can join them July 27-30 on their virtual bike tour of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor here. Are you a middle or high schooler wanting to get involved? It's super easy! Ages are middle and high school youth. Head to their website and register for the program and Itza will reach out to you. Their main office is in Carrboro, NC. You don't need anything to participate, since they provide, jersey, shorts, bikes, helmets, etc!For the entire month of May 2021, we are doing a drive for Triangle Bikeworks! They need bike shorts, jerseys, gloves, Garmin bike computers, bike lights, road bikes, and mountain bikes (all sizes!). Please drop off your donation to The Clean Machine at 104 W Main St, Carrboro, NC 27510 or Triangle Aquatics Center at 275 Convention Dr Cary, NC 27511. Or please mail them to 117 W Main Street Carrboro, NC 27510. Prefer to give a monetary donation? Head to their website here.Want to eat healthy AND give back? A tradition of family cookouts in his youth was the inspiration for Joe Zavala to buy his first smoker when he and his wife Christan became homeowners. As Joe tinkered with his cooks and his brisket game grew stronger, he launched an ambitious (but not exactly profitable) plan to cook and deliver his barbecue to customers all over the Dallas and Fort Worth area. With encouragement from Christan and longtime friends C.J. and Drew, Zavala’s Barbecue began serving in pop up form at a few events in the Grand Prairie area. Word was quickly spreading about the quality of food they were producing, and soon Zavala’s was serving their food every Saturday at The Brass Bean in Grand Prairie. As the buzz continued, Zavala’s would cook as much as their smokers could hold, but the sellout sign would still be posted within a few hours of opening as the locals couldn’t get enough of Joe and crew’s smoked meats. They began looking for a more permanent spot to be able to cook and serve, and eventually found an old building in downtown Grand Prairie. With the Zavala’s crew all having full time jobs and family obligations, they are currently only open Saturdays for lunch, but that may change in the future. In the meantime, Joe's wife Christan will be utilizing the restaurant space during the week as she opens Mas Coffee Co., which will be serving Zavala’s Barbecue breakfast tacos. The word is definitely out about the high quality menu being served by this talented team. There’s a line every Saturday, and for good reason. With peppery, well cooked brisket, housemade sausages and Mexican influenced menu items, Zavala’s Barbecue is a place BBQ fans need to get to. Zavala's Barbecue is currently open Saturday's only from 11am - Sell out 421 W Main St, Grand Prairie, TX 75050 Catch Zavala's Barbecue on the web at: http://www.zavalasbarbecue.com/ Twitter: https://www.facebook.com/zavalasbarbecue/ Facebook: @zavalasbarbecue https://twitter.com/zavalasbarbecue
Austin Legg - Backcountry Hunter, World Traveler, Husband/Dad, Marketing Guru at Eberlestock, Bigfoot Believer, and Guinness World Record Holder (check out the video, linked below). *As taken from @austin.legg on Instagram Austin is from Boise, Idaho. After earning his Masters of Business, Austin was hired at Eberlestock, to be the Sales Director. That was pretty short lived, and he changed positions to his current role, as Marketing Director. Glen Eberlestock, the founder of the Eberlestock Brand, was an Olympian that competed in the biathlon. He recognized a need for a lighter-weight rifle stock, that was still durable. He started making rifle stocks, and drastically changed the times that the Americans competing in the Biathlon events. Later in life, after a career in the military, Glen recognized a need for a better way to carry a rifle, attached to a backpack, while hunting. He also felt a need to develop some tactical packs for the military, after September 11, 2001. Currently, Eberlestock’s business is roughly 50% hunting packs and 50% tactical packs. Eberlestock makes “The Legos of Backpacks,” as Ian calls them. You may be familiar with some of their older packs, such as the the Dragonfly and Blue Widow packs. They were built bombproof, but as with such durable materials, they came with some of the additional weight. Eberlestock has since brainstormed, engineered, tested, and repeated the whole process countless times since. Today, they have created some incredible, lightweight packs, that are super customizable and durable! We (The guys at SAHN OUTDOORS) have been running Eberlestock pack systems now for a couple of years. We have successfully packed out numerous animals, our hunting camps miles into and out of the backcountry, and countless other items on our outdoor outings.
