Abraham Garver: Why Private Equity Rollups Push Smaller MSPs Into New Market Niches

Business of Tech

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 11, 2026 31:39

Vendor channel consolidation continues to restructure the MSP landscape, with private equity-backed rollups driving both market concentration at the top and increased deal volume. This episode centers on the sale of Worksighted, a 25-year-old, $27 million revenue MSP with strong vertical focus in healthcare and construction, to Thrive in a 35-day close. The structural mechanism at play is an increasing market segmentation where larger MSPs systematically acquire or merge with similarly sized providers, often leaving a gap for smaller operators as larger entities move upmarket. Primary evidence for this consolidation includes direct transaction data and workflow. According to Abraham Garver, his team handled 132 vetted buyer candidates for Worksighted, resulting in eight competitive offers after 76 signed NDAs. Thrive, having completed 27 MSP acquisitions, was able to accelerate the deal's timeline due to deep experience and preparation by both buyer and seller. The trend is further supported by Q2 market updates indicating 22 U.S. MSPs likely to come to market in 2026 and over 120 M&A transactions in Q1 alone, as reported by Drake Star. Related developments highlight the bifurcation of deal opportunities by provider size and the associated liquidity for MSPs. Private equity buyers increasingly favor acquisitions with a minimum of $3 million in revenue and $500,000 in EBITDA, while smaller MSPs are more commonly left to pursue peer-to-peer mergers or organic growth strategies. The episode also addresses the operational pitfalls of optimizing solely for high recurring revenue percentages, with evidence suggesting buyers offer premiums for organic growth and new client acquisition rather than rigid recurring revenue thresholds. For operators, these dynamics generate clear tradeoffs and risks. Larger MSPs face the challenge of integrating acquired firms and potentially divesting smaller clients who do not meet their revised minimums. Smaller MSPs may find opportunity by acquiring divested clients or targeting niche segments that fall beneath larger consolidators' thresholds. For all providers, the importance of thorough preparation, clean financials, and strategic clarity on post-transaction roles emerges as a key safeguard against value loss and disruption. Rigid adherence to target metrics not grounded in buyer behavior—such as focusing excessively on monthly recurring revenue—carries the risk of reduced flexibility and diminished exit prospects. It's just him on his guitar and the sounds of the moorland landscapes there. This is just lovely and contemplative. I kind of can't stop playing it. Cyfarwydd by Mari Mathias favorite track Can y Melinydd Dulcet-voiced Welsh folk singer-songwriter sings these mostly delicate pieces in her native tongue, and she tastefully brings in some modern sensibilities. Mari handles vocals, acoustic guitar, and harmonium, with guests on flute, electric guitar, bass, harp, and drums and percussion. The Other Place by Aisling Urwin favorite track One Day All Of This Will End Multi-instrumentalist and singer, Irish Aisling Urwin has a lovely, soaring voice. Her writings are in a contemporary folk vein, sometimes dabbling into jazz territory. There is a veritable kitchen sink of modern and traditional folk instruments featured here, too much to list, but all are tastefully played in support of this fine artist's work. The Hungry Child by Jim Ghedi Jim Ghedi brings his impassioned delivery to this drone-y dirge. The piece steadily builds from ominous to near chaos as the tragic ending for the child is finally revealed. Aeons In Stillness by Vishal Naidu favorite track Gallops In The Mist Vishal is a member or a prominent metal band in India, but don't let that fool you. This is deeply contemplative instrumental music in a dark folk vein. Primarily guitar, other instrumentation here are strings, flute, and piano and other keyboards, provided by some other artists in this realm. Everything In Its Right Place by KALANDRA This time, Kalandra is covering this Radiohead song, turning it into their own by virtue of their own signature sound. Their version is both airier, yet more lush, with Kalandra's layering of both instruments and vocals. Worlds on Fire by In The Labyrinth favorite track KABUL Multi-instrumentalist and composer Peter Lindhal once again delivers his particular menu of richly flavoured world-infused music to the musical table. Peter alone plays too many instruments to list, and he also has guests on many others, plus vocals, as well. This is a heady mix of Middle Eastern and Indian music, stirred up with some western electricity. Not just world music, but other-worldly music. Blue Morpho by Ed O’Brien favorite track Incantations This is the second solo release for Radiohead's guitarist. Psych folk for the most part, with chamber, jazz, funk, and ambient over- and under-tones. The sound is a bit muted, but not at all unclear, more dreamlike than muffled. Utterly phantasmagoric, and best heard from start to finish, but choosing the opener as my favourite track, as it is a fine introduction. Nothing Is Promised by LYRRE favorite track Ephemeral Full-length release from Lyrre, a metal band, who feature hurdy-gurdy, along with an ethereal, yet forceful female vocalist. The music is driving, as metal should be, but the element of the hurdy-gurdy gives it an enjoyable twist from the usual instrumentation one encounters in metal, and the musical complexity makes it an enjoyable experience.

Not surprisingly, the Bert Jansch Foundation has backed this release, but Grassie brings plenty of his own style and personality to bear here. Sam supplies vocals and acoustic guitars, with guests on saxophone, double bass, flute, clairsach, clarinet, and backing vocals. Audio Experiments by Steve Broomhead favorite track Reflekt Multi-instrumentalist Steve Broomhead offers this collection of pieces of music that he felt didn't fit with his other releases. They all fit quite nicely here, most are eerie and/or with a feeling impending doom, right up my deep and dark alley. Reflekt is very representative of the whole, although First Light also vies for my favourite. Topography of Mind by Telegraph favorite track Topography of Mind Israeli band Telegraph is a bit of a throwback to classic prog blended with psych and space rock. Instrumentation is the usual, guitars, bass, drums, plus synthesizers and other keyboards, and flute, with vocals as well. All of the tracks are epic in scope, as well as length, on this fine release. Nagalite by LILI REFRAIN favorite track Nagal This multi-instrumentalist and vocalist hails from Rome. The tracks are meditations on metamorphosis, evoking rituals and renewals by her eerie vocals and phantasmagorical production of the music. Instrumentation is guitars, bass, synths, bass drum, and drum machine. Enter the enthralling world evoked here. Glassman by jonasmeersmans favorite track Glassman Belgian fingerstyle guitarist and composer combines acoustic and electric guitars with looping layers, along with guests on violin, keyboards, double bass, and electric bass. The music touches on ambient, soundtrack, chamber, and jazz, in this ear-catching release. The Undone is Done Again by Tanya Donelly and Chris Brokaw favorite track Sainte Nicholaes Combining forces, Bostonians Tanya Donelly and Chris Brokaw reimagine some Medieval pieces using modern instrumentation. Tanya's haunting voice and Chris' brooding and echo-y guitars create a sense of antiquity, as if recorded in a monastery. Lizardcore by Iguanahead favorite track Sage Nifty hard psych band from Nashville, proving that not everyone there wears a cowboy hat. This trio utilizes the classic instrumentation of guitars, bass, and drums (vocals, too), adding dashes of metal, doom, and prog to lift this a cut above the others in this ouevre. Thy Shadow by Beautiful Death favorite track Thy Shadow Aussie solo artist influenced by dark metal utilizes the simple beauty of an acoustic guitar to bring dark folk themes to life. Unsurprisingly, there is a achingly melancholic thread throughout all of the pieces. Anti-war by Mind Overclock favorite track Anti-war These two songs could have been written during the Vietnam Era, yet sadly, they are new, because here we are again. They evoke much of the spirit of the anti-war movement of the times, and they do it so very well. Psych seems to go hand in hand with the idealism of peace and this band delivers it in spades.

Dave Stack. Dave is an internet entrepreneur and the founder of MusicStack, one of the early online marketplaces for rare and out-of-print music, which he began building out of his dorm room at Ohio State 30 years ago in the early days of the commercial internet. Over the years, he has gone on to build a portfolio of niche vertical marketplaces under the banner of Vertical Commerce, including MusicStack, Bear Pile, Reborns, and BJD Collectors — which has grown to facilitate tens of million in gross merchandise sales. In our conversation, Dave and I explore how a love of music, coding, and selling turned into one of the internet's early marketplace businesses, and how he kept following overlooked opportunities into passionate collector and creator communities that most people would never think to serve, like lifelike baby dolls and handmade teddybears. We talk about why niche markets can be so powerful, how trust and community become part of the product, the leverage that automation and AI now afford a solo founder, and why Dave chose an intentionally lean and independent path rather than the conventional startup playbook of scale. More than anything, this is a conversation about building durable internet businesses, staying authentic to yourself, and designing a life around work you genuinely love. Dave is thoughtful, unconventional, and deeply true to his own path, and I really enjoyed our conversation — please enjoy.00:00 Exploring Hidden Opportunities in Niche Markets11:32 The Longevity of Online Businesses16:33 Building Trust and Community in Niche Marketplaces22:55 Automation and Efficiency in Solo Entrepreneurship28:01 Navigating the Chicken and Egg Problem in Marketplaces32:13 Understanding Marketplace Scale and Growth36:42 Authenticity in Entrepreneurship40:57 Community Engagement and Personal Connections51:24 Reflections on Cleveland and Personal Journey56:15 Outro-----LINKS:https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidjstack/https://www.davestack.com/press.cgi-----SPONSOR:Cerity PartnersCerity Partners, a full-service investment and wealth management firm serving high-net-worth individuals, entrepreneurs, and business owners, is proud to sponsor Lay of The Land. The primary focus of the episode centers on the launch of a new done-for-you social media solution, highlighting how consistent, strategic posting plays a critical role in building trust and strengthening your overall marketing ecosystem. Unlike many services on the market, this offering emphasizes fully custom, human-created content designed by real strategists, copywriters, and designers rather than generic AI-generated posts, ensuring each brand maintains a unique and authentic voice. The group discusses how social media acts as a key first impression alongside websites, direct mail, and cold calling, and how being visible across multiple channels increases credibility and conversion. Ultimately, the episode reinforces that combining consistent outreach, integrated marketing channels, and a professionally managed, authentic social presence is key to standing out, building trust faster, and creating a more predictable pipeline.  Key Takeaways Consistency drives results in outbound efforts. Even when probate typically takes time, steady calling and follow-up can generate opportunities and wins faster than expected when you stick with the process.  Track your numbers to understand performance. Knowing your call volume, conversations, and conversion rates helps set realistic expectations and identify what's working.  Expanding beyond probate opens new opportunities. Niches like late mortgage allow you to reach prospects earlier, often before competition increases and urgency peaks.  Social media is a critical missing piece for many businesses. Prospects will look you up before responding, and an inactive or inconsistent presence can hurt trust and credibility.  Consistency + strategy beats random posting. A structured, cohesive approach to content keeps you visible and relevant without overwhelming your time or energy. Human-created content is a major differentiator. Custom posts built by real strategists, designers, and copywriters—rather than AI-generated filler—help maintain authenticity and make your brand stand out.  Integrated marketing creates stronger results. Combining direct mail, cold calling, and social media ensures prospects see you everywhere, increasing familiarity, trust, and ultimately conversions. To learn more, visit https://www.AllTheLeads.com or call (844) 532-3369 to check how many leads are available in your market.   #RealEstateMarketing #LeadGeneration #SocialMediaForBusiness #MarketingStrategy Previous episodes: AllTheLeads.com/probate-mastermindInterested in Leads? He offers the 4 tracks as one complete suite, which then is also separated out into individual pieces. My favourite here is his paean to the old Sycamore Gap tree that was attacked in Northumberland, which has since been regenerating. Schlafes Bruder by Andy Aquarius, Kimi Recor favorite track Back To The Fire Andy Aquarius has teamed up with Kimi Recor on this fine sort-of-EP. Andy plays Celtic harp, synths, and provides some vocals, and Kimi sings and plays monochord, a type of ancient stringed instrument. As the instrumentation suggests, there is an uncannily ethereal feeling to these tracks. My favourite track (Back To The Fire) utilizes Kimi's crystalline vocals to their fullest, creating an atmosphere drenched in melancholy and lamentation. Psych Against Cancer Vol 3 Part 2 by Psych Lovers favorite track Spinning Through Eternity This is the second of this year's benefit release for Macmillan Cancer Support, a whopping 55 tracks of psych and space music. As anyone knows who has experienced it, hospice is a wonderful support in a time that is so difficult to experience. Choosing my own contribution, Tom Kelly’s “Spinning Through Eternity,” but I also highly recommend Empty House, Helicon, and Vincent Carr's SUMIC The Veils “Lungs” Single 2026 Ahead of a new full-length release, Australian artist Tim Andrews has released this single. There is a delicate touch in the orchestration, as there was in Asphodels, but has a more hopeful feel. This is a wish for things to go well, for new beginnings somewhere different, for a life full of love shared. (3:46) Under Celestial Alignments by Nordic Giants UK neo-classical, ambient, post rock duo return with this lovely all instrumental release. Their sound is lush and orchestral, pianos and strings feature largely here. A start to finish listening is highly recommended, as each piece flows so well into the next. Citizen Of Glass by Agnes Obel favorite track Familiar Moody release from this multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and composer from Berlin. Arrangements are rather spare, yet also somehow lush. Instrumentation includes various keyboards and percussion, cello, violin, and trautonium (which is an instrument from the 1920s that sounds like glass, you will know what it is, when you hear it). The harmonies on my favourite track are chillingly unearthly. No Return Address by Mind Overclock favorite track Cold Distance Can psych be both bluesy and whimsical? Of course it can! This band proves that, with this nifty EP. Dreamy, velvety vocals; warbly, spiky, fuzzy guitars; and flights of fancy abound. I'm choosing Cold Distance to indicate what to expect, but please don't hesitate to check out the charm of enjoying Breakfast On Orion.) Heol Las by Huw Marc Bennett favorite track Y Fedwen (The Birch) Welshman Huw Marc Bennett, a multi-instrumentalist and composer pulls from folk, psych and jazz with these lovely original tunes. Delightfully bucolic, these tracks all bring visions of medieval village and farm life to me. There is a sweetly picturesque delicacy to his music, but it is also robust and earthy. Orchard by LYRRE Lyrre is also promising us a new release in May, and they've released two singles ahead of the game. These are both very much in their excellent blend of metal and folk, recognizable largely by the vocals and hurdy-gurdy of Michalina Malisz. The band aptly backs her on guitars, bass, and drums. Both of the singles are driving and compelling, but I'm choosing “Orchard,” as my favourite of the two.

If your book launch plan is built entirely around posting on social media, you're not alone, but it may not get you the results you're hoping for. New authors often rely on social platforms for visibility, expecting that a few well-crafted posts will lead to reviews, sales, or business leads. But without an email list, a networking strategy, or speaking opportunities to support the launch, social media alone usually falls flat. Visibility without conversion does not move the needle. That's why I teach authors to launch with a strategy. I help entrepreneurs build a personalized plan that leverages launch teams, targeted outreach, and relationship-driven visibility to generate 50+ Amazon reviews and create a clear path from the book to the business. If you're ready to move beyond passive posting and into intentional connection, let's talk. Schedule a complimentary 30-minute book launch brainstorming session at www.BookLaunchBrainstorm.com and learn how to build a review-driven launch that delivers real business results. In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Brian Hansen discuss: Planning before marketing Specializing in impact Prioritizing practical channels Using AI and content wisely   Key Takeaways: Lawyers should focus on strategy, clear goals, and growth plans before jumping into ads or SEO. Thinking like a business owner prevents reactive, scattered efforts. Narrowing focus to niches ensures higher-quality results and avoids mediocrity. Saying no to misaligned work preserves reputation and effectiveness. Local Service Ads, SEO fundamentals, Maps visibility, and strong reviews drive results. Smaller firms may rely more on networking, referrals, and credibility than on heavy SEO spend. AI accelerates work, but expertise remains critical. This is folk with a bit of a spiritual twist, there is a feeling of ritualistic celebration of nature throughout. They toss in some banjo, trumpet, violin, and I think that is didgeridoo as well. Hypnotic. The Spinning Wheel by Mediæval Bæbes favorite track November Mediæval Bæbes have released these 12 tracks in honour of the twelve months of the year. As usual, they bring lush and gorgeous intertwining vocals and plenty of exotic instrumentation (just far too many to list, so you'll have to trust me). Every track is a masterwork, but choosing November as being representative of the release. Basal Ardor by Tenk Van Dool / Paul Sears favorite track Katie and Natalie The second outing from this duo, with Paul Sears on drums and percussion, and Tenk Van Dool on guitars, bass, mandolin, keyboard, and various synths. There are some guest vocals, as well as guests on guitars, bass, flute, and woodwinds. Experimental progressive heavily laced with jazz, and they've spiked it with a bit of psych as well. All Tied Together by Ye Vagabonds favorite track The Flood Led by the Mac Gloinn brothers, they bring lovely acoustic folk, blending their original lyrics with a traditional Irish folk sound (imagine smoky pubs and busking on street corners). The harmonies are simply gorgeous, and always at center. But the stories and their presentation are what is so captivating about this release. Instruments include what you might expect (guitars, fiddle, accordions), plus a few surprises along the way, like some synthesizer here and there. Fuglefolk by Songleikr favorite track Elden Melder This Nordic folk act has waited 10 years since their first release to bring us this second one. They lean heavily into traditional sound with their original material. Recorded live in studio, with their captivating vocal harmonies, the core band, plus a few guest musicians, makes this feel like a pagan village celebration. Unplugged From The Moon by Kwoon favorite track Swan Kwoon is French post-rock band led by Sandy Lavallart, here presenting material in a stripped down, acoustic setting. The material is hauntingly melancholic and contemplative. There is some electric guitar, keyboards, strings, and a female harmony on one of the tunes. Stark and lovely. L'Antidote “L'Antidote” 2025 From France, this world class trio combines cello, piano, and percussion, which sounds simple, but it's decidedly complex. Their music is a rich tapestry of world, folk, jazz, and classical. Prepare to be mesmerized. Favourite Track: Desert Plant (6:31) Malandra by Ão favorite track Me Condena Belgian artists Ão combine electronica, art pop, saudade, and alt Latin music into a tantalizing mélange. Honey-voiced lead singer Brenda Corijn sings in Portuguese and English, with the band providing guitars, electronics, and percussion. Altogether, it's an irresistably heady mix. Eve (2026 remaster) by Karda Estra favorite track Andraiad Multi-instrumentalist and composer Richard Wileman has issued this remastered release, and it is well worth revisiting, or perhaps, discovering for the first time. Inspired by the 1886 gothic novel “The Future Eve,” Richard blends chamber and progressive music expertly, using both electric and acoustic instrumentation. He has a signature delicacy to all of his works, they differ greatly, yet you hear his ear and his hand in each of them. Dark Eyed Sailor by Olivia Chaney Olivia Chaney has released this single, due to it's inclusion in the new Wuthering Heights film. Production is spare, featuring her lovely voice accompanied by harmonium. Superb.

The Developer to CEO transition rarely starts with a bold declaration like, "I'm going to run a company." More often, it begins quietly—by taking on one more responsibility, saying yes to a new opportunity, or stepping into a role that stretches just a little beyond your comfort zone. In this episode of the Building Better Developers podcast, part of our Forward Momentum season, we talk with Meeky Hwang about how that transition unfolds in real life. Her path—from developer to agency founder and CEO—reflects a pattern many experienced engineers recognize only in hindsight. Over time, those small decisions add up. You stop thinking only about code and start thinking about people, clients, sustainability, and direction. At some point, you realize you're no longer just building software—you're building a business. About Meeky Hwang Meeky Hwang's journey resonates with entrepreneurs, technical leaders, and anyone navigating the intersection of technology and business. As CEO and Co-Founder of Ndevr, a digital solutions development agency, Meeky brings over 20 years of experience building resilient, scalable platforms for organizations including Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Forbes, PMC, and Bloomberg. Her work goes beyond website development—she focuses on long-term digital solutions that improve performance, streamline workflows, and align technology with business strategy. Equally important is Meeky's perspective as a woman leading in a male-dominated industry. She has navigated the challenges of technical leadership, entrepreneurship, and scaling a services business while building credibility and strong teams along the way. Her experience offers an honest look at what it takes to grow as a leader without losing sight of innovation, people, or purpose. Follow on LinkedIn and her Website. Developer to CEO transition starts with "accidental" opportunities For many engineers, this transition begins almost by accident. A consulting role exposes you to different industries. A startup forces you to wear multiple hats. An agency environment teaches you how delivery, relationships, and trust intersect. None of these roles comes with a "future CEO" label. But they do build instincts—how to prioritize, how to adapt, and how to make tradeoffs when perfect solutions aren't possible. Those instincts matter far more than a perfectly mapped career plan. Developer to CEO transition lessons from consulting, startups, and agencies Each environment contributes something different to the Developer to CEO transition. Consulting sharpens communication and expectation-setting. Startups teach ownership and resilience. Agencies reveal what it takes to scale work without burning people out. Individually, these roles can feel chaotic. Together, they form a foundation that prepares developers for leadership long before they realize that's where they're headed. Developer to CEO transition and the mindset shift to full responsibility There's a moment in the transition when responsibility feels heavier. Decisions don't stop at your team or your sprint—they ripple outward. Hiring, pricing, client relationships, and long-term viability all land on your plate. Problems are no longer theoretical. They're personal. This shift changes how leaders think. It forces clarity, prioritization, and the ability to move forward without perfect information. Developer to CEO transition accelerators: mastermind and founder groups One of the most impactful accelerators in the Developer to CEO transition is joining founder communities earlier than you think you need them. Mastermind ROI for New Owners Real conversations about hiring, benefits, pricing, and mistakes Exposure to how other founders actually run their businesses Founder groups shorten the learning curve by replacing isolation with shared experience. Instead of guessing, you learn from people who've already been there. Developer to CEO transition accountability: learning faster through peers Accountability is often underestimated in the Developer to CEO transition. Founder groups create a rhythm of progress—not through pressure, but through shared momentum. The "Accidental" Path That Works Follow opportunities that increase learning, not just status Optimize early for exposure and experience, not polish When you know you'll report back to peers who care, progress stops being optional. Developer to CEO transition when your role forces personal growth The Developer to CEO transition also reshapes how leaders show up. Many founders start as quiet contributors, comfortable behind the scenes. Leadership changes that. Mindset Shifts in the Developer to CEO transition Responsibility changes how decisions feel—and how quickly they must be made Visibility and communication become part of the job Growth here isn't about changing who you are. It's about growing into what the role requires. Developer to CEO transition and evolving the agency niche over time As companies mature, the Developer to CEO transition continues through strategic evolution. Niches tighten, then expand. Focus shifts based on market feedback, strengths, and timing. The most successful agencies don't chase trends. They adjust deliberately, guided by experience rather than impulse. Developer to CEO transition: what to do earlier if you could restart Ask founders what they'd change, and many give the same answer: find peer support sooner. The Developer to CEO transition becomes clearer—and far less lonely—when you're not navigating it in isolation. This episode of the Building Better Developers podcast is a reminder that growth doesn't come from having all the answers. It comes from asking better questions, learning from others, and building momentum—one decision at a time.
