First, thank you to EVERYONE to who has ever listened to this show. This is a stream of consciousness episode. We had a lot planned for 2021, but because of some... unforeseen circumstances... life has taken a hard left. I will tell the full story someday, but it's a little fresh and I have yet to find the right way to explain what exactly happened. Suffice it to say, that a clerical error put the tiniest wrench in the most important of plans. Because of this tiny wrench, I have had to reassess all my plans. Unfortunately, a casualty of this shake up is The People of Home. My focus is needed elsewhere. Perhaps someday, we will return. But for now... Home is where the heart is...

    DAY 445 - What's in a Constitution?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 24, 2020 17:39

Today, Doctor Carter explains to us what is generally included in a constitution and what we can expect to see in our constitution. The constitution will be made with the help of firms from around the world who have studied how nations work and will be able to provide insight into what works best for helping us achieve our goals as a nation. Of course, the final product will be ratified by Homies everywhere. In other news, the opening of an archeological dig leaves us with more questions than answers as archeologists uncover more ruins and artefacts of some civilisation that preceded us. And Camdia throws around the idea of placing tariffs on blackwood lumber coming from Home. More on all these stories as they progress. The #FlagsforHome contest continues! Here are the details for the flag contest: All Homies are invited to participate in the creation of our national flag. Participants are encouraged to draw a flag that, to them, represents Home and what it means to be a Homie. Flag designs can be drawn on paper, on a computer, with crayons or pencils, or through some other medium. Regardless, an image of the flag must be sent to dearsubjects@gmail.com. We will be sharing the flags on our social accounts ( Instagram (https://instagram.com/thepeopleofhome) ). The 5 flags that seem to gain the most positive popularity will be deemed the finalists. Their creators will be invited onto the broadcast to explain the symbolism behind their design and encourage other Homies to vote for them. Then, all Homies, everywhere, will vote on which flag is to be flown as a representation of our nation. The winner will receive a full-size flag of their design and be named Home’s Official Ambassador, for 1 year. We will be posting them as they come in. The nation would be divided into states and the responsibilities would be divided up as to who would best be suited to fulfill the needs of the constituents. He calls this a “Democratic Republic.” Republic because of the representative aspect and democratic to remember from where the power is derived - the people. It’s another bicameral plan with the lower house being more responsive to the immediate needs and emotions of the people and the upper house being more concerned with the long-term issues facing what would be called, “The United States of Home.” Next week, we will meet our third and final candidate. “Absolute freedom of the individual.” Rob Denton claims this as the guiding principle of his idea for government. Under his governmental system, Home would be divided up into several voting districts (to be decided upon after elected) and each district would elect a representative and a local governor. The representatives would elect people to the Upper House of the New Parliament. In the Upper House, 5 ministers would concern themselves mainly with specific affairs such as economics, justice, defense, education, and energy. “…be positively minded…” This is the single quality that should be expected of our representatives. It’s obvious that Rob supports free thinking in politics. We look forward to hearing more about his ideas in the areas of education and the economy next time we have him on. This week on Dear Subjects, at MeCHo, Alex and I asked YOU, the citizens of Home, what you want your new government to look like. As we get closer to the elections, the ministers have left us a letter explaining how the elections will work. The letter reads: “In the past, we have been run by a Parliamentary Government, where each Member of Parliament was elected based on campaign slogans and won only by getting more votes than their opponent. “In Norward’s government, the upper house is not elected at all and are simply chosen by King George. We feel that this form of Government has failed in representing each citizen in Norward. “After a long discussion, we have decided that this first election will be conducted in an instant run-off voting style where each person will select their first-choice candidate for leadership, then select their second choice, then their third, and so on. “If your first choice gets the least votes, your vote will go to your second choice, and so on until someone has more than 50% of the votes. “By doing this, we hope we hope that we, as citizens, can find a way to govern ourselves in a manner that will allow us to take responsibility and create a community together. “We long for a government that’s sole purpose is to work for the people and to be in service of the people. We hope to see a government that aspires to bring out the best in each individual, and that plays to the strengths of the community. We invite anyone with a passion to lead this country to step up and participate in the elections, January 13, 2020.” Signed by the ministers. We hope that all the citizens of Home will take advantage of this opportunity to vote for the candidate that has the best ideas for what the government of this nation should look like. We, at the Media Corporation at Home, will be hosting discussions and debates to help the people make the best decision on how their future government will run. In other news, a statue of Ruth Magaba was erected in Guardian Park. Ruth was a young girl who died of starvation during the blackout. A spokesperson from The Ruth Magaba Foundation said, “Ruth’s death was completely preventable. There’s plenty of food - even with the power being out. It’s a right shame that a little girl should become forgotten like this. It’s a shame that any member of our community could be forgotten.” The Ruth Magaba Foundation will be providing meals for the hungry in Guardian’s River. They’re slogan is “Never Forgotten” and have a stated mission of neighbourly service. The statue of Ruth is holding a bouquet of flowers which were painted by members of the community. 269 days ago, we found ourselves a separate nation. This means today is our very first Folktales Eve as a sovereign nation! Today, we share, around an imaginary campfire, stories from Home. Since Home is an incredibly multicultural nation, we share stories that come from around the world. Raven even shares a story of her own! The famous artist, Aimee Raven gave us a special recording of her smash hit, “ The King and the Universe (https://soundcloud.com/aimee-raven-campos/the-king-and-the-universe) ,” to play in today’s show. The Oster Sisters also grace us by sharing two ancient poems. Join in the conversation on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/dearsubjects) . DAY 0 - "Good luck on your own," says King George

Earlier today, Minister T. William Larson held a press conference addressing a letter sent from King George of Norward. The letter reads as follows: Dear Subjects, It has come to my attention that over the past several centuries, our two nations have grown further and further apart. These days we seem to be two completely different cultures. We have found that our common interests have drifted apart. With an ocean, both literal and figurative, between us, my court and I have reached the conclusion that both nations would be better off with you managing your own affairs from this time forward. We look forward to witnessing your self-discovery - from a distance. Surely we will be forming strong bonds as continued trading partners, allies, and nations with a common history. Good luck on your own, Your Former King, George It was clearly difficult for Minister Larson to deliver this message. You now live in a nation of your own! How does this go over with you?
