These students were involved in a service learning project where they had the freedom and agency to choose a topic important to them that impacts their local community. This was an interdisciplinary project that was part of their Spanish language and sociales (Spanish social studies) classes that involved public speaking. Their job was to create a speech to inspire change in their community and to add a level of authenticity, the final speeches were delivered to influential members of their community, including the mayor and local media. These students were the finalists from their class selected to give their speech to these important policymakers, as well as fellow students and members of the school community, allowing them to reach a large audience and advocate for an issue that they care about. Sounding Freedom and Liberation - Episode 6 withAndrew Bowie

Thoughtlines

In this episode we speak to Professor Andrew Bowie, who discusses his work at the intersection of philosophy and music, suggesting that both practices “make sense” of things, and that aesthetic experience opens up new ways of relating that extend beyond the simply cognitive. It is within this context that ideas of freedom arise. While resisting a definition of freedom, Andrew is clear that music is not just a metaphor for freedom but is itself a liberatory practice, responding to constraints and working to transcend these. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe and share Sounding Freedom and Liberation with your community. Biography Andrew Bowie is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and German, Royal Holloway, University of London, and a jazz saxophonist. He has written extensively about the relationship between music and philosophy, showing how they are entangled with each other historically, and how each illuminates the other. Works in this area include Music, Philosophy, and Modernity (Cambridge University Press, 2007), Aesthetic Dimensions of Modern Philosophy (Oxford University Press, 2022), alongside numerous articles and chapters, as well as two introductions to German philosophy. This excerpted version of the coda gets a clarity many recordings lack. However one thinks about it, this seems to me to show what is meant by musical transcendence. https://youtu.be/uXS-LvrJgdU?si=xmzRgyTYYqLXIThG This is my favourite example of how Louis Armstrong really invented jazz: there is nothing like this in music before Louis started playing in this way. The rather staid accompaniment only serves to highlight how startling his playing was. https://youtu.be/KF7-xh8Ai1c?si=WHZ2_dEamZS_NuZR Beethoven's Missa Solemnis in an outstanding live performance. Like the Missa Solemnis, this resists reduction to any of the ways it might be thought about. In this episode of Sounding Freedom and Liberation join us for a conversation with Dr Vanessa Paloma Elbaz as we hear about her work in the Sephardi music tradition of the mediterranean diaspora. With a particular focus on women, and women's role in mediating and subverting traditions, we hear how pockets of freedom are created amidst unfreedom as songs are modified and used to resist constrictions of gender and tradition. Hear also about the complexities of archiving within this space, but also of its significance as it foregrounds voices that are considered unimportant, creating ruptures in larger narratives, and unravelling hierarchies of knowledge. Biography Dr Vanessa Paloma Elbaz is a Senior Research Associate at Peterhouse, the University of Cambridge, and Research Associate on the ERC-funded project Ottoman Auralities and the Eastern Mediterranean: Sound, Media & Power, 1789-1922. In 2012, she founded KHOYA: Jewish Morocco Sound Archive to collect, digitize, classify, and analyse contemporary and historical sound recordings of Moroccan Jews. Join us for a conversation with Dr Polly Paulusma to hear how her experience as a singer led her to uncover Angela Carter's deep love of and connection with folk song, one that infuses Carter's writing. Discover also how this influences Polly's own creative practice, which moves freely between word and song, and embodies Carter's “magpie” approach. Listen as Polly tells us how folk song engages with freedom, allowing individuals to take on the personas and experiences of others by adapting stories and lyrics, making them their own, and offering ways of imagining different ways of being and acting. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe and share Sounding Freedom and Liberation with your community. Biography Polly is both a musician and a scholar. She has been a signed recording artist since 2003. Her albums have achieved international critical acclaim and she has toured the USA, the UK and Europe supporting Bob Dylan, Jamie Cullum, Coldplay and Marianne Faithfull. She continues to record and release records with One Little Independent. Her latest album is called Wildfires. Alongside her music, Polly completed a doctorate at the University of East Anglia and her book, Angela Carter and Folk Music: ‘Invisible Music', Prose and the Art of Canorography, was published in 2023 by Bloomsbury. Between writing, recording and touring Paulusma teaches songwriting and poetry for Cambridge University and songwriting for the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance, where she is Associate Professor of Song and Literature. In this episode of Sounding Freedom and Liberation we speak to Dr Berta Joncus and learn about Berta's own personal experience of freedom and liberation through discovery of her own voice as a performer, and how this led to her research career. Berta tells us about eighteenth-century performer-celebrity Kitty Clive, who worked against cultural constraints to exercise musical and social freedom, and recovered her career by turning the “trash-talk” used against her to her own benefit. Learn also about the unknown repertoire of abolition song, a form of activism circulating in polite society of the eighteenth century—particularly among women—that appropriated the narratives of enslaved people and set them musically so as to engage sympathy and ultimately work towards the end of the slave trade. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe and share Sounding Freedom and Liberation with your community. Biography Dr Berta Joncus is a musicologist, and Research Project Lead at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Her research focuses in large part on Early Music repertories, including 18-century European opera and vocal music. Berta is an impassioned advocate for lost and marginalised voices, and most recently has been awarded a 24-month Arts and Humanities Research Council Curiosity Grant to lead an interdisciplinary network looking at abolition song and its legacies in Britain between 1787 and 1830. Join us for a conversation with Professor Francio Guadeloupe as he elaborates freedom as a practice that places us in relation to different spheres, including the political and religious, and to all forms of life (not just “those who human”). Drawing on the radical relationality of the Rastafari notion of the “I-and-I”, and reflecting in particular on music in the Caribbean, Francio draws out how music enables a relational and participatory aesthetic that creates moments of freedom and denaturalises categories of race, identity and gender. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe and share Sounding Freedom and Liberation with your community. Biography Francio Guadeloupe is Professor by special appointment of Public Anthropology of Kingdom Relations at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. His research focus is on the Dutch Caribbean and the Netherlands Antilles, and in particular he is concerned with themes including identity, post-colonialism and social dynamics within kingdom relations. Guadeloupe 's principal areas of research have been on the manner in which popular understandings of national belonging, cultural diversity, religious identity, and mass media constructions of truth, continue to be impacted by colonial racisms and global capital. Jeffrey Epstein's connections to the scientific world became one of the most glaring examples of how silence can serve as complicity. For years, he courted top researchers, academics, and institutions with millions in donations, securing himself a seat at elite gatherings despite his status as a convicted sex offender. Many scientists accepted his money without questioning the source, and when his crimes resurfaced, most stayed quiet rather than acknowledge their associations. Some claimed ignorance, while others avoided speaking at all, afraid that admitting the relationship might tarnish their reputations or jeopardize funding. This cultivated silence allowed Epstein to maintain credibility in circles where reputation was currency, shielding him from scrutiny.By not publicly confronting his predatory behavior, these figures effectively helped Epstein launder his image as a benefactor of cutting-edge research and intellectual advancement. Even after his 2008 conviction, he was still welcomed in prestigious spaces like MIT's Media Lab and Harvard circles, as if his money outweighed the harm he inflicted on countless girls. The unwillingness of scientists to speak out—whether out of greed, cowardice, or denial—was not passive but powerful. Their silence reinforced the myth of Epstein as a legitimate patron of science, enabling him to weaponize philanthropy as a cover for abuse and allowing his crimes to persist in the shadows far longer than they should have.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:https://evolutionnews.org/2019/09/jeffrey-epstein-and-the-silence-of-the-scientists/

Learning Tech Talks

Happy Friday, everyone! Hopefully you got some time to rest and recharge over the Labor Day weekend. After a much needed break, I'm back with a packed lineup of four big updates I feel are worth you attention. First up, MIT dropped a stat that “95% of AI pilots fail.” While the headlines are misleading, the real story raises deeper questions about how companies are approaching AI. Then, I break down some major shifts in the model race, including DeepSeek 3.1 and Liquid AI's completely new architecture. Finally, we'll talk about Google Mango and why it could be one of the most important breakthroughs for connecting the dots across complex systems. With that, let's get into it.⸻What MIT Really Found in Its AI ReportMIT's Media Lab released a report claiming 95% of AI pilots fail, and as you can imagine, the number spread like wildfire. But when you dig deeper, the reality is not just about the tech. Underneath the surface, there's a lot of insights on the humans leading and managing the projects. Interestingly, general-purpose LLM pilots succeed at a much higher clip, while specialized use cases fail when leaders skip the basics. But that's not it. I unpack what the data really says, why companies are at risk even if they pick the right tech, and shine a light on what every individual should take away from it.⸻The Model Landscape Is Shifting FastThe hype around GPT-5 crashed faster than the Hindenburg, especially since hot on the heels of it DeepSeek 3.1 hit the scene with open-source power, local install options, and prices that undercut the competition by an insane order of magnitude. Meanwhile, Liquid AI is rethinking AI architecture entirely, creating models that can run efficiently on mobile devices without draining resources. I break down what these shifts mean for businesses, why cost and accessibility matter, and how leaders should think about the expanding AI ecosystem.⸻Google Mango: A Breakthrough in ComplexityGoogle's has a new, also not so new, programming language, Mango, which promises to unify access across fragmented databases. Think of it as a universal interpreter that can make sense of siloed systems as if they were one. For organizations, this has the potential to change the game by helping both people and AI work more effectively across complexity. However, despite what some headlines say, it's not the end of human work. I share why context still matters, what risks leaders need to watch for, and how to avoid overhyping this development.⸻A Positive Use Case: Sales Ops TransformationTo close things out, I made some time to share how a failed AI initiative in sales operations was turned around by focusing on context, people, and process. Instead of falling into the 95%, the team got real efficiency gains once the basics were in place. It's proof that specialized AI can succeed when done right.⸻If this episode was helpful, would you share it with someone? Leave a rating, drop a comment with your thoughts, and follow for future updates that help you lead with clarity in the AI age. And, if you'd take me out for a coffee to say thanks, you can do that here: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/christopherlind—Show Notes:In this Weekly Update, Christopher Lind breaks down MIT's claim that 95% of AI pilots fail, highlights the major shifts happening in the model landscape with DeepSeek and Liquid AI, and explains why Google Mango could be one of the most important tools for managing complexity in the enterprise. He also shares a real-world example of a sales ops project that proves specialized AI can succeed with the right approach.Timestamps:00:00 – Introduction and Welcome01:28 – Overview of Today's Topics03:05 – MIT's Report on AI Pilot Failures23:39 – The New Model Landscape: DeepSeek and Liquid AI40:14 – Google Mango and Why It Matters47:48 – Positive AI Use Case in Sales Ops53:25 – Final Thoughts#AItransformation #FutureOfWork #DigitalLeadership #AIrisks #HumanCenteredAI

Welcome to the Fundraising Everywhere Podcast, today, we've got something a little bit different for you. To celebrate our upcoming recruitment and careers conference coming up on Thursday 20th November, we've decided to hand the mic over to our guest host Rory White in this special series of episodes called 'It Started On The Street'. Rory will be chatting to some brilliant leaders in the charity sector and beyond about their journeys since they started their careers as dialogue fundraisers. "It was such a pleasure talking with Alf Cowan. In fact, our conversation went on so long we had to restart the Zoom because we ran out of time — I think we ended up talking for a couple of hours! Alf is a really thoughtful guy. After university — where he studied business — he unexpectedly found himself working in face-to-face fundraising, which was a real revelation for him at the time. From there he moved into the charity sector, working directly for charities on their face-to-face programs, before transitioning into more of a data and analytics focus. Today, Alf is Head of Charities at MediaLab, but he still draws heavily on his early face-to-face experience. He regularly visits frontline teams to stay connected to that perspective, and it really informs the campaigns he creates for clients. He's insightful, reflective, and a genuinely nice person to talk to. I think you'll really enjoy this conversation with Alf Cowan" You can learn more about our upcoming Fundraising Recruitment and Careers Conference happening on Thursday 20th November here If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to hit follow and enable notifications so you'll get notified to be first to hear of future podcast episodes. Everyone is asking questions about Trump’s connections to Jefferey Epstein, but the president isn’t the only powerful person or institution linked to him. You might know that connections to convicted sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein led to the resignation of the director of the MIT Media Lab, Joi Ito, after a Ronan Farrow exposé. But fewer people know that Arwa Mboya, an MIT student and Kenyan virtual reality programmer, bravely called for Ito to step down before Farrow’s piece. She was isolated and attacked for her bravery, before history proved her right. Mboya talks about how the bravery and community of women and girls gave her the courage to take a stand. The Inquiry
Is AI eroding our critical thinking?

The Inquiry

More and more of the tasks we perform in our daily lives are been guided by artificial intelligence, from searching the internet for answers to relying on satellite navigation in our cars. But studies recently released suggest that our use of AI is having a negative impact on our ability to make informed judgements and decisions. In one recent study from MiT's Media Lab, a group of people were asked to write several essays. Some of them used AI, others didn't. Those who used generative AI reportedly became lazier with each subsequent essay. This cognitive offloading, allowing AI to take over from our brains might be less taxing, but there are concerns that if we come to rely on AI, we are in danger of replacing our own critical thinking for a technology that might not always come up with the right answer. However, there are those who argue that AI can be beneficial in helping our cognitive function, that it can be employed to take on the more mundane, repetitive tasks, freeing up headspace to allow us to become more productive. Software education platforms are just one example where AI is been employed to assist teachers in things like knowledge checks and grading, with the claim that it allows them time for more valuable interaction with their students. So is it possible to find a balance where we can we can rely on AI but not to the extent were we lose our mental agility. On this week's Inquiry, we're asking "Is AI eroding our critical thinking?'Contributors: Dr. Daniel Willingham, Professor of Psychology, University of Virginia, USA Dr. Michael Gerlich, Professor of Management, SBS Swiss Business School, Zurich, Switzerland Yvonne Soh, Co-founder and CEO, Noodle Factory, Singapore Sana Khareghani, Professor of Practice in AI, AI Policy Lead for Responsible AI UK Programme, King's College, London Presenter: Tanya Beckett Producer: Jill Collins Researcher: Maeve Schaffer Editor: Tara McDermott Technical Producer: Craig Boardman Production Co-ordinator: Tammy Snow Production Management Assistant: Liam Morrey
