Jeffrey Epstein bought his way into higher education the same way he bought his way into so many elite spaces: with money, proximity, and the promise of access to even bigger money. At Harvard, he donated about $9.1 million between 1998 and 2008, including a $6.5 million gift that helped create the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics under Martin Nowak, giving Epstein a foothold inside one of the most prestigious universities in the world despite having no real academic credentials of his own. At MIT, the Media Lab accepted Epstein-connected donations totaling about $850,000 between 2002 and 2017, including money received after his 2008 conviction, while Epstein also served as a connector to other wealthy donors. The pattern was not complicated: Epstein used philanthropy as a laundering device for reputation, turning checks into offices, meetings, dinners, campus visits, faculty relationships, and the aura of intellectual legitimacy. Harvard's own review confirmed the scale of his giving and his access, while MIT's investigation showed that officials knew his status created problems and still allowed the relationship to continue.Once Epstein got inside those institutions, the protection came less through some formal public defense and more through silence, compartmentalization, prestige, and the willingness of important people to treat his money as separate from his crimes. Harvard said it did not accept gifts from Epstein after his 2008 conviction, but its review still found that Epstein continued visiting the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics dozens of times after that conviction, with access to campus space and faculty circles. MIT's own report found that Epstein's donations continued after his conviction and that the Media Lab tried to keep his name from public association with the money, which is exactly how reputational laundering works: take the cash, preserve the relationship, hide the stink. The result was that higher education gave Epstein what he craved—status, brainpower, proximity to Nobel-level scientists, and a way to present himself as a patron of big ideas instead of a convicted sex offender. In plain terms, Epstein did not sneak into academia; he paid his admission, and once he was inside, too many people decided the money, connections, and prestige were worth more than asking the obvious questions.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

This was an interdisciplinary project that was part of their Spanish language and sociales (Spanish social studies) classes that involved public speaking. Their job was to create a speech to inspire change in their community and to add a level of authenticity, the final speeches were delivered to influential members of their community, including the mayor and local media. These students were the finalists from their class selected to give their speech to these important policymakers, as well as fellow students and members of the school community, allowing them to reach a large audience and advocate for an issue that they care about. It is not an understatement to say that AI has revolutionized virtually every aspect of human life. What should characterize a Christian posture towards AI? Should we be concerned? Optimistic? How do we think biblically about it the emergence of new AI technology? In this unique episode, Sean is joined by three Biola/Talbot professors who are experts in their fields and in AI: Yohan Lee, Associate Dean of Technology and Professor of Computer Science; Michael Arena, Dean of Biola's Crowell School of Business; and Mihretu Guta, Professor of Philosophy and Apologetics. Mihretu P. Guta, Ph.D. (Philosophy at Durham University, UK). After completing his Ph.D., he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Durham University within the Durham Emergence Project which was set up with cooperation between physicists and philosophers and funded by the John Templeton Foundation. Guta's postdoctoral research focused on the nature of the emergence of the phenomenal consciousness taken from the standpoint of metaphysics, philosophy of mind, cognitive neuroscience and quantum physics. Dr. Yohan Lee has led advanced technology organizations for over 20 years in commercial industry, education, and government. He has been privileged to serve as a civil scientist (U.S. National Institutes of Health), Principal Investigator (Google AI), Chief Science Officer (Riiid Labs, Inc.), and CEO (Scaled Entelechy, Inc). His undergraduate and doctoral studies were at UCLA in neuroscience and genomics with a focus on the neurological basis of learning and memory in addition to precision medicine. His doctoral work centered on large scale genomic data for health and distributed computing. In his corporate role, Dr. Lee has led research and business units in industry, public-private partnerships, the federal government, and international academic consortia for enterprise initiatives with Fortune 50 corporations. Michael Arena, Ph.D., is the dean of the Crowell School of Business at Biola University. He is also the chief science officer and co-founder of the Connected Commons, a research consortium that brings together business and academic thought leaders to develop and apply organizational network solutions. Prior to joining Biola, he served as the vice president of talent and development at Amazon Web Services (AWS), where he leveraged network analysis to enable employee growth, organizational culture and innovation. Arena was also the chief talent officer for General Motors Corporation where he helped to facilitate a business transformation, which is highlighted in his book Adaptive Space. Arena also spent two years as a visiting scientist with MIT's Media Lab researching human networks and acted as a design thinking coach within the Stanford School for three years. ==========Think Biblically: Conversations on Faith and Culture is a podcast from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University, which offers degrees both online and on campus in Southern California. In our last episode of the season (season 2 is in the works), we look at MIT's Media Lab, which long dazzled the public with its bold ideas and groundbreaking projects. But behind that reputation was a secret: much of the lab's funding traced back to Jeffrey Epstein. Jeffrey Epstein's connections to the scientific world became one of the most glaring examples of how silence can serve as complicity. For years, he courted top researchers, academics, and institutions with millions in donations, securing himself a seat at elite gatherings despite his status as a convicted sex offender. Many scientists accepted his money without questioning the source, and when his crimes resurfaced, most stayed quiet rather than acknowledge their associations. Some claimed ignorance, while others avoided speaking at all, afraid that admitting the relationship might tarnish their reputations or jeopardize funding. This cultivated silence allowed Epstein to maintain credibility in circles where reputation was currency, shielding him from scrutiny.By not publicly confronting his predatory behavior, these figures effectively helped Epstein launder his image as a benefactor of cutting-edge research and intellectual advancement. Even after his 2008 conviction, he was still welcomed in prestigious spaces like MIT's Media Lab and Harvard circles, as if his money outweighed the harm he inflicted on countless girls. The unwillingness of scientists to speak out—whether out of greed, cowardice, or denial—was not passive but powerful. Their silence reinforced the myth of Epstein as a legitimate patron of science, enabling him to weaponize philanthropy as a cover for abuse and allowing his crimes to persist in the shadows far longer than they should have.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:https://evolutionnews.org/2019/09/jeffrey-epstein-and-the-silence-of-the-scientists/
Everyone is asking questions about Trump’s connections to Jefferey Epstein, but the president isn’t the only powerful person or institution linked to him. You might know that connections to convicted sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein led to the resignation of the director of the MIT Media Lab, Joi Ito, after a Ronan Farrow exposé. But fewer people know that Arwa Mboya, an MIT student and Kenyan virtual reality programmer, bravely called for Ito to step down before Farrow’s piece. She was isolated and attacked for her bravery, before history proved her right. Mboya talks about how the bravery and community of women and girls gave her the courage to take a stand. Here’s our recent episode looking at Trump’s connections to Epstein: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/epstein-files-firestorm-shows-the-power-of/id1520715907?i=1000718024227See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
More and more of the tasks we perform in our daily lives are been guided by artificial intelligence, from searching the internet for answers to relying on satellite navigation in our cars. But studies recently released suggest that our use of AI is having a negative impact on our ability to make informed judgements and decisions. In one recent study from MiT's Media Lab, a group of people were asked to write several essays. Some of them used AI, others didn't. Those who used generative AI reportedly became lazier with each subsequent essay. This cognitive offloading, allowing AI to take over from our brains might be less taxing, but there are concerns that if we come to rely on AI, we are in danger of replacing our own critical thinking for a technology that might not always come up with the right answer. However, there are those who argue that AI can be beneficial in helping our cognitive function, that it can be employed to take on the more mundane, repetitive tasks, freeing up headspace to allow us to become more productive. Software education platforms are just one example where AI is been employed to assist teachers in things like knowledge checks and grading, with the claim that it allows them time for more valuable interaction with their students. So is it possible to find a balance where we can we can rely on AI but not to the extent were we lose our mental agility. On this week's Inquiry, we're asking "Is AI eroding our critical thinking?'Contributors: Dr. Daniel Willingham, Professor of Psychology, University of Virginia, USA Dr. Michael Gerlich, Professor of Management, SBS Swiss Business School, Zurich, Switzerland Yvonne Soh, Co-founder and CEO, Noodle Factory, Singapore Sana Khareghani, Professor of Practice in AI, AI Policy Lead for Responsible AI UK Programme, King's College, London Presenter: Tanya Beckett Producer: Jill Collins Researcher: Maeve Schaffer Editor: Tara McDermott Technical Producer: Craig Boardman Production Co-ordinator: Tammy Snow Production Management Assistant: Liam Morrey
