The Liaisons Project, conceived by Anthony de Mare, is a landmark commissioning and concert project based on the songs of Stephen Sondheim. The original project brought together 36 of the world's leading composers of classical, jazz, film, indie, pop and musical theater to re-imagine one of Sondheim's songs as a solo piano piece. Now the sequel has been released adding 14 songs to the series. The Broadway musical as we know it would not exist without the generations of Jewish songwriters who brought not only their talent but their heritage and perspective to their art. With A Place for Us, Axelrod has gathered a collection of this cherished work through which he finds healing and a sense of home and community, echoing the refuge generations of Jews have sought in the American theater. Kyle shares his ranching story and I love his willingness to recognize the need to change and actually make a change. So many find it easier to go broke doing what is comfortable than to make a change. He also shares that it turns out being very low input isn't always enough, he didn't own the cows or equipment at the start. But there wasn't enough money coming in to make it work. Lots to learn from Kyle! For the June episode, I'm covering some live theatre, and not one, but TWO 'secret cinema' events! -You won't know what the films are going to be until they begin, and that's a beautiful thing.. First up is Hans Wackershauser and Megan Baldrey of Full Circle Theatre, and 'Riverona'. Riverona is "The inevitable gritty reboot of the original teen drama Romeo & Juliet". It will be taking place over multiple 'episodes' and evenings, including a binge-watch weekend where all 4 episodes will be performed. -A unique way to do theatre! Get your tickets here: https://aflimsyplan.com/full-circle-theatre/ Next, Pascal Fortin stops by to tell us about his cult film videostore in Calgary, Rough Cut Video, and their 2nd secret cinema event called 'Freaks Come Out At Night vol.2'. Taking place at the Globe Cinema on Saturday July 6th, this is a double-feature of obscure flicks that could only be curated by someone who really knows their stuff! Get your tickets (and browse the immense catalogue of cult films) here: https://roughcutvideo.ca/ Fimally, I hopped on a zoom call to chat with Kyle Marshall, Programming Director of The Calgary Society Of Independent Filmmakers, about 'Summer Cinema Club'. Every other Tuesday, the CSIF headquarters will be showing a movie as part of a series celebrating 'The entire history of film'. -For FREE! Kyle describes the inspiration for the series, the previous screenings, & what to expect of the final 4 instalments. Reserve your seat here: https://csif.org/events/8256-9430
