Someone's host has been recording entirely the right sort of podcast... Join me for Kingkiller Chronicle character profiles, theory discussions, and more! SPOILERS abound here -- if you haven't read the existing books (The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear), be warned! I am not in any way affiliated with Rothfuss or his publisher, DAW Books. Pull up a seat at the bar, as we turn the spotlight on the regulars at Newarre's very own Waystone Inn -- Old Cob, Graham, Jake, Carter, Shep (RIP), and Aaron the smith's prentice. In this episode, we discuss the stories that Old Cob (and Chronicler) tell about Kvothe and Taborlin, what these interludes can tell us about the overall story, and how these guys might play into Day Three. This podcast will keep rolling along at its own pace like a meandering caravan - thank you for all the support! Anchor.fm has been rolled into Spotify and there are some new processes on the back end, so please let me know if there is anything weird with the feed. Find me (rarely) on Twitter at twitter.com/etrsop or email me, etrsop@gmail.com. If you want to support the podcast, leave a five-star review on your favorite podcatcher, or buy Jacob Walker a coffee (maybe he'll lighten up) at ko-fi.com/etrsop.
How is the road to Tinue, my friends? We're coming up on the end of another year, and my friend John from Vintas stopped by the troupe to talk about Trapis - just in time for Midwinter! We talk about Kvothe's time in Tarbean, compare what we know about religion in Temerant, and discuss parallels between the Tehlin religion and real-world faiths from our own backgrounds studying Christianity and the Bible. We of course talk about the story of Tehlu and Encanis, and pack a lot of other discussion in, too. Hope you enjoy! If you want to share your thoughts or feedback, email me at etrsop@gmail.com. You can support the podcast by leaving a glowing review on your chosen podcatcher or toss a talent to my Ko-Fi! Thank you to patrons Amanda, Kevin, and Jim and emailer Greg for your support and enthusiasm :)
HELLO! We are preparing to dust off our cloaks of no particular color and get back to it. Checking in with some housekeeping, some thank-yous, and some self-deprecation :) I also went back through all my old episodes to find the true name of RJ...or something like that. Reach me at etrsop@gmail.com or check out my Ko-Fi!
The troupe is settling down for a bit as RJ takes a little time to clear the waters of the ol' creative well. We chat some fantasy books and will rest up a bit before we head on down the road again. My book recommendations: "The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear" and "Rumo and His Miraculous Adventures" by Walter Moers "Sabriel" by Garth Nix "Path Of Deceit (Star Wars: The High Republic)" by Tessa Gratton and Justina Ireland "Artemis" by Andy Weir Find me on Twitter at twitter.com/etrsop or email me, etrsop@gmail.com. Rings, pagers, and cracked pots! Nick, Jordana, and Jeremy of “Page of the Wind” have escaped from the clutches of the insatiable Mister Mailbag and join RJ for a beautiful game in discussing the character Bredon, whom we meet in Severen during “The Wise Man's Fear.” Lots of Master Ash hypothesizing here, so buckle up for a ride on the Theory Train – though Jordana and Jeremy might try to convince us Bredon is just some dude. We also talk about Bredon's motive in educating Kvothe and playing Tak with him, possible casting for Bredon, and if he is connected to the Fae, the Lacklesses, or the Jakises. I also lament the lack of diversity in the Chronicle, and Nick reminds me about the KKC webcomic that Rothfuss wrote about. We further talk about Cinder's possible working relationship with Bredon, and those rumors about his pagan rituals. And what would a conversation about Master Ash be without Cthaeh and Denna being mentioned? Are we just reading too much into it?? Maybe! Bor Gullet will know the truth! Come on and enjoy the ride. Special thanks to Nick, Jordana, and Jeremy from Page of the Wind for joining me. You can find their excellent DAILY re-read of The Kingkiller Chronicle on your preferred podcatcher. Find me on Twitter at twitter.com/etrsop or email me, etrsop@gmail.com. Toss a talent or two my way to support my cold brew and Cheez-It supply at ko-fi.com/etrsop. Thank you for listening!
We pulled up at the Half-Mast in Tarbean to talk about Skarpi on this month's episode! And, a tinker caught up with me and delivered letters from Jim and Greg, as well as a new review. This episode is stuffed with theories, ramblings, self-corrections, and mentions of all sorts of characters: Lanre! Sceop! Selitos! Ctheah! Kvothe (of course)! I cover some of the most popular theories about this diamond-eyed storyteller and talk about how pivotal his story is in Kvothe's journey. Grab a cup of Fallows Red and join me! Find me on Twitter at twitter.com/etrsop or email me, etrsop@gmail.com. Financially support my bad habits at ko-fi.com/etrsop. And hey -- thank you for listening!
My papery little scrivs, it's time to chat The Chronicler on ETRSOP! And we have an episode more tantalizing than a nice glass of drinking chocolate or fresh-pressed apple cider. We chat about Chronicler's career and his time at the University, including how those might line up and how old C might be. I explore the scene where Kvothe makes up stories about Chronicler, and wonder if he's giving away a secret. And we definitely talk about possible Lochees/Lackless connections, his relationships with Bast and Skarpi, and why he's on some hot scribe shit. Have fun! Find me on Twitter at twitter.com/etrsop or email me, etrsop@gmail.com. Toss a talent or two my way to support my caffeine and Cheez-It fix at ko-fi.com/etrsop. Thank you for listening!
Grab a cup of metheglin, and don't dare talk while someone else is performing! We're still in the Eolian this week, focusing on owners Deoch and Stanchion -- and we also talk about the inn itself! Since they're both connected to Yll and Illien, we'll chat about the country and the famed Edema Ruh singer/songwriter. Marked explicit because I talk about tops and bottoms. If you know, you know. Gather your best gossip and meet me at the Eolian for our discussion on Count Dennais Threpe, Kvothe's friend and co-composer of the hit diss track "Jackass, Jackass." There are a few significant sevens with Threpe, so we talk about those and muse what his real motivations might be. Is he a master manipulator, moving Kvothe like so many tak pieces across the board? Remember that Kvothe told Threpe about Denna and Master Ash, so he's got some pretty sensitive info inside that brain. Also, HOW DID ALVERON NOT WRITE HIM TO LET HIM KNOW KVOTHE ARRIVED??? Listeners, the mind boggles. Find me on Twitter at twitter.com/etrsop or email me, etrsop@gmail.com. If you wanna financially support the podcast, buy me a coffee at ko-fi.com/etrsop. Happy listening!!
Editor's note: I forgot to say #2 before I said the second fact about Alveron (it's that he did research into the Amyr in the past) We're rolling some information about Stapes, Dagon, and Caudicus into our main discussion of the Maer Alveron! In this episode: “Lee-Rand” Alveron makes an appearance Fellow Millenials Warned About This One Common Phrase Who is really pulling the strings in Severen, and what is their end goal is with Alveron (if there is indeed an outside player)? I bring up a theory that Maer Alveron is gay (hats off to Nick at Page of the Wind) We speculate merrily on who might be an Amyr I point out Kvothe may have had some of Alveron's blood at some point Padawan Imri Cantaros' name is pronounced instead of the traditional pronunciation for the city of Imre I make fun of Kvothe for being pretentious Are Dagon and Caudicus working together? Little preview of my budding “Cinder is working on his own agenda” theory What do we make of the Cthaeh's significant “joke?” Sprout the dog and an empty can of Cherry Diet Pepsi make a background cameo Find me on Twitter at twitter.com/etrsop or email me, etrsop@gmail.com. Charming, mysterious, and slightly scary Bast is up next! This is a PACKED episode, so put on your best boots and find some elderberry liquor or a little jar of brined olives to snack on while you listen. And be warned, this one is not for young ears. I swear a lot. Leave the babes at home. In the first part of this episode, we go through our seven things as usual and I discuss a variety of theories and questions about Bastas, son of Remmen. What's his true motive with Kvothe? When and why did they meet in the first place? And what's going on in the basement of the Waystone? The second part is a bit of a freewheeling readthrough, which is something I haven't done! “The Lightning Tree” is a wonderful I had a great time talking about the plot: Bast's machinations, the magic, milkmaids, and more from his day around the lightning tree. We talk about Bast's changing desires, stories of Crazy Martin, and some of the little worldbuilding nuggets Pat sprinkles in. Plus, I read some good passages and do a bit of lazy accent work. Find me on Twitter at twitter.com/etrsop or email me, etrsop@gmail.com. If you wanna financially support the podcast, buy me a coffee at ko-fi.com/etrsop. Happy listening!!
Will and Phoenix from “Tales from the Waystone” podcast join me to talk about Simmon, a budding alchemist and a wonderful friend. We celebrate his kindness and I draw Phoenix into the dark side of “future-casting” about Book Three. We talk about the sandy-haired man who comes to the Waystone in the frame, a possible falling out between Kvothe and Sim (and K's possible guilt), Kvothe dropping the ball on reciprocating Wil and Sim's friendship, and the possibility of Sim not being heterosexual. I also plug the 1964 movie “Becket,” an incredible study in how to make a close male friendship seem fruity. And yet again I decry the portrayal of some LGBT+ folks in this series. Will educates me on Samwell Tarly of “Game of Thrones” and compares him to Simmon. The Dalonir family and the Duke of Gibea lead us into a discussion on the Amyr. Somehow, Max Rebo and his “jizz band” make it in. Will drops a “Fight Club”-related theory I've never heard before…and much, much more! Enjoy! You can find me on Twitter, Facebook, and Ko-Fi or send me an email: etrsop@gmail.com
Tempi, the first Adem mercenary we meet, is in focus for this month's episode! What we'll get into: A celebration of people who are just GOOD at something, not great or prodigious. A theory on why Alveron sent Tempi to fight the bandits, which I suss out in real time. Finding empathy with Tempi as the “lesser sex.” Adem knowledge of the Fae and tinkers. Tempi's reaction to Felurian “killing men with sex,” and his reaction when he sees her in the forest. Discussion of why the Adem require permission to “use someone's dead.” NEXT MONTH we have an exciting episode on another sandy-haired young man with special guests Tales from the Waystone! See you then! You can find me on Twitter, Facebook, and Ko-Fi or send me an email: etrsop@gmail.com
Content warning for some mild language and light discussion of sexual assault. The Trio are here with me today, and things get juicy as we discuss Ambrose, Kvothe's nemesis at the University. Do we stay on topic? No way. Do we have a good time? Absolutely! This was a LOT of fun to record and I hope you all enjoy! There is some fruity language, so be aware! We talk about the escalating nature of Kvothe vs. Ambrose; lines of succession; killed kings; who else is trying to kill Kvothe; and more. Nick asks us to think of Ambrose's point of view. And, we are all very polite to one another! I also say “I don't have anything else to talk about” 50 minutes in, and we go for another 20. Time flies when you're having fun! Special thanks to Nick, Jordana, and Jeremy from Page of the Wind for joining me. You can find their excellent DAILY re-read of The Kingkiller Chronicle on your preferred podcatcher.
I've got some scutten to share as we sit around the campfire and chat about Wilem son of ???, who is one of three people were seen at or near the Golden Pony on the night Ambrose Jakis' rooms caught fire. I discuss tropes/stereotypes in fantasy, touch on Wilem as "the betrayer," and celebrate his heart and humor. Given that it is Black History Month, and because of the efforts in several U.S. states to ban the teaching critical race theory in schools and assigning certain books to students, I would like to invite everyone to join me in donating to We Need Diverse Books, a nonprofit geared towards making sure children's books reflect the kids who are reading them. This organization recognizes "all diverse experiences, including (but not limited to) LGBTQIA, Native, people of color, gender diversity, people with disabilities*, and ethnic, cultural, and religious minorities."
We're back at it! ETRSOP season 2 is here with a character profile of Arliden. I discuss Arliden's song about Lanre, the question of if he's Kvothe's real father, the impact of Arliden's teaching on Kvothe's life, and more. You can find me on Twitter at ETRSOP, and can email me thoughts, theories, questions, or complaints at etrsop@gmail.com. A great way to support the podcast is by leaving a review on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, or leaving me a few iron drabs on my Ko-Fi. Bye for now!
Hi, Kingkiller fans! A quick note to announce Season 2, which premiers Jan. 2, 2022. I am hoping to get an episode out the first Sunday of each month as I delve into character profiles of the male characters in Temerant. Hope you all join me! Talk soon.
Yeeeeeehaw! I'm recording this on the day Pat Rothfuss read the prologue of "Doors of Stone" with some rambling, theorizing, and enthusiastic verbal hand-waving. What a day. There are spoilers within for the prologue, so check it out before you dive in. Please enjoy and I would love to hear your thoughts either via email, etrsop@gmail.com, or on Twitter @ETRSOP! I did a Twitter poll asking all you dear listeners what Star Wars books you'd like to hear about, and the winning result was Star Wars books by female authors. So, I gathered a council of my favorites and discussed what I like about them, and also talked about Bail Organa perhaps more than you would expect. These are short descriptions without giving away major plot points, but there are some spoilers and discussions of plot for the Skywalker Saga, Rogue One, and The Clone Wars! Here's the list: Wild Space by Karen Miller Ahsoka by EK Johnston Queen's Peril (and Queen's Hope) by EK Johnston Master and Apprentice by Claudia Gray Doctor Aphra by Sarah Kuhn Leia: Princess of Alderaan (and Bloodline) by Claudia Gray Rebel Rising by Beth Revis
It's a delight to bring my first mailbag episode to your ears, so let's dive right in to Ask ETRSOP! I describe a date with three of the University's masters, pick three things to bring to dinner with Auri, throw out some names for a KKC television show, and answer other listener questions. As a bonus, my dog click-clacks her way down the hall near the end, and dogs should always be celebrated. Thank you Lisa, Dylan, and Mandy for your questions!! If any of you dear listeners have questions about Kingkiller or life in general, send a tinker my way to etrsop@gmail.com or on Twitter @ETRSOP.
Greetings, fellow travelers! I wrote a post for TOR.com, since "The Wise Man's Fear" was published ten years ago this month, detailing ten burning questions I have that I hope are answered in Day Three. If you're a regular listener, you've heard me chat about a few of these topics before. :) So, I'm gonna put in timestamps for each question so you can skip around. 1. How does Kvothe get Folly? (4:53) 2. Will Kvothe see Abenthy again? (5:50) 3. What does Master Ash want? (6:43) 4. Who IS Master Ash? (7:08) 5. What's in the Lockless box? (9:41) 6. What's in the thrice-locked chest? (10:35) 7. Who does Kvothe kill in Imre, and is it the king assumed by "Kingkiller?" (11:34) 8. Who is the "penitent king" in the frame story? (13:59) 9. What is Auri's true story? (14:51) 10. Why does Bast travel with Kvothe/Kote, and how do they meet? (17:15) I wanna give a HUGE thank you to Bridget at TOR for publishing my article. A shoutout as well to everyone on Kingkiller Twitter for enthusing with me, to KKC reddit and the KKC podcast family for sharing theories and making me think about this story differently, and especially to all my listeners who keep me goin'. Whether this is your first listen or your fortieth, I'm so grateful. Cheers, y'all!
"Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?" This episode is partly celebration of one of my favorite female characters and partly a series recommendation for the Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix. Sabriel is a heroine whose story I have returned to again and again. She is one of a long line of people called the Abhorsen, who stand against necromancers and sorcerers determined to bring armies of the Dead into life. At 18, Sabriel leaves school to find her father, the current Abhorsen, after he goes missing. Armed with a sword and seven bells, she crosses the Wall into the Old Kingdom and begins her search -- both in Life, and in Death. I figured it's appropriate on International Women's Day to highlight one of the coolest characters I've come across! Sabriel knows her power, she knows what she has to do, and she does it. She's smart and determined and witty and strong. Quite simply, she's badass. I hope you'll think so too! Here's a link to the cover of Sabriel that hooked me all those years ago as a kid in the library!
Y'all, this is a housekeeping episode! No profile today. I'm taking a hiatus from this project for an undetermined amount of time. I'll still be around on Twitter and am hoping to do some bonus episodes - book recs, movie or TV recs, et cetera. I would love to do some non-KKC profiles before I return to profile the menfolk of Temerant. I also really wanna do a mailbag episode! Please email me at etrsop@gmail.com! My inbox is lonely! THANK YOU to all of you for your support and for listening.
Felurian, what have I done?? I've made a podcast episode about you, that's what! It's no "The Lay of Felurian," but I hope you join me all the same. I discuss Kvothe and Felurian's battle of wills, speculate wildly on if Felurian knew the Chandrian "back in the day," get to some Twitter comments on why the sex scenes exist in the first place, and much more. I would love to do a mailbag episode, so please drop me a line at ETRSOP@gmail.com! To connect with me on social, find me on Twitter and Facebook. Happy Halloween!! ETRSOP is back with a lunar-focused episode as we dive into questions and theories about the moon! I explore the story of Jax, the hints we get about Iax and the Creation War, and if the moon is really gone in the frame narrative. The three-part Denna saga concludes today! We talk about if Denna has a knack for music and how she knows plays and songs so well, we wonder where Denna is from, we chit-chat about the similarities between Denna and the moon, we ponder why Denna keeps changing her name, Dalyce eats a bagel, I say “like” a lot, we chat about the language Kvothe uses in talking about her, I defend country music, and a whole lot more. Dalyce returns to pod with me about Denna -- we talk about what goes wrong with Denna and Kvothe, the fight they have in Severen after she shares her song, Denna’s changing views on the Chandrian, if Skarpi’s story is real, relationships we’ve had that are similar to Kvothe and Denna’s, love languages, and more. "How can I make any sense of her for you when I have never understood the least piece of her myself?" Join special guest Dalyce and I for the first part of our Denna discussion, where we share seven things we know about her, discuss what makes her compelling, compare her to Kvothe, speculate about her motivations, mull over the meaning of her patronage, and more. Travel to Trebon with me as we discuss Nina, a brave and clever girl who clearly gets a lot of vacation days from her job helping her mom mix pots and glaze paints. We discuss the hill fort near Trebon, the power of dreams, and the logistics of all Nina's trips to Imre. Lyra, the powerful and terrible Namer who called her husband Lanre from beyond the doors of death, is this week's character! Join me as I probe what I think are two of the most interesting questions about her story: how did she resurrect Lanre, and, how did she die?? I also touch on the fan theory that Lyra is the Lady Lackless, and how Lyra and Lanre could parallel Kvothe and Denna. I welcome The Trio onto ETRSOP as we discuss everyone's favorite pixie-faced gaelet, Devi! We had a great time talking about Devi's lust for the archives, my hope that Devi and Mola are dating (and my hope for more queer content in all things), who Devi's clients are, if she might betray Kvothe, what Devi may have done to get kicked out, how women are treated differently than men at the University, and a WHOLE lot more. Thanks so much to Jeremy, Jordana, and Nick for joining me for this one! What's in the Lackless box?? What's behind the Lackless door?? In this episode, I talk a bit about Meluan Lackless, and the tantalizing theories that she has inherited. We cover rhymes about the Lackless box; the similarities between the box, the Cthaeh, and the thrice-locked chest; the "doors of stone;" and more. To drop me a line, email me at etrsop@gmail.com. This episode is about two very important swords -- one we meet at the beginning of Name of the Wind, and one we meet toward the end of Wise Man's Fear. I talk about if Folly is Cinder's sword -- or perhaps is Caesura, remade; I ponder why these swords are given feminine pronouns; I read a bit from the books; and much, much more! I know you have been as patient as two stones together, dear listeners! Will and Phoenix of podcast Tales from the Waystone join me this week via Zoom to talk about the enigmatic Auri. We have a wonderful chat about Auri's power, if she really could be Princess Ariel, and how she brings out some of the best in young Kvothe. Our resident El'the and physicker is the subject of this week's pod! I talk about Mola's relationship with Devi, how she may lead Auri into danger, and an interesting theory I found on reddit that says Mola is the one who tries to kill Kvothe. I am now on Facebook and on Apple Podcasts! Thank you to my first reviewer for the five talents (stars)! If you wanna get in touch, you can also find me on Twitter or via email, etrsop@gmail.com. Tiny gods, Sim! Today, we talk about Fela, her significance to the plot, what we know about Modeg, and how she may feature in Book Three. SPOILERS for Name of the Wind and Wise Man's Fear. Only that which records can podcast. Luckily, we don't need several weeks of "run, Ketan, walk, discuss" to reach Haert for this episode. I talk about Vashet, Ademre, kings, poets, poet kings, king killers, and grandma issues. SPOILER WARNING if you have not finished The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss! Also, my apologies for cat litter noises in the background. It adds a certain special something... Marked as explicit content for some discussion of sexuality and how musicians are viewed by the Adem. Next up is Fela! I would love to hear from you! My email address is etrsop@gmail.com. SPOILERS for NotW and WMF! Please do not proceed if you haven't finished both books. On our character profile journey, we'll start with "dark Laurian, Arliden's wife."
