Mon. 7/6, 7p: On Espejos de Aztlán, New Mexican author Dr. Lillian Gorman shares insights from her research on the 4 th of July Fiestas in Las Vegas, New Mexico. In a re-evaluation of the Fiestas cultural richness and its deeply rooted anchor as querencia for many northern Nuevomexicanos. We will chat about these Fiestas as a “love of place” and as a "contestatory space" at the same time, hosted by Cristina Baccin . Dr. Gorman is currently Director of the Spanish as a Heritage Language Program and Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona. Mon. 6/8, 7p: Today, on Espejos de Aztlán we have a conversation with Prof. Nancy López hosted by Cristina Baccin regarding the brutality and cruelty of police officers in the murder of Mr. George Floyd. We will discuss how this tragic incident is related with our nation’s history of slavery, intentional segregation and institutionalized racism. Dr. Nancy López, Professor of Sociology is the Director of the Institute for Study of “Race” and Social Justice and an Africana Studies Faculty Affiliate at the University of New Mexico. We will also talk about steps each of us can take to build and establish a just society and secure everyone’s human rights, especially in New Mexico.

Mon. 4/13, 8p: On Espejos de Aztlán, we honor Dr. Mari-Luci Jaramillo ´s life and contributions to New Mexico, our nation and the world. A native of Las Vegas, New Mexico, who advocated for civil rights become the first Latina to hold a United States ambassadorship. Throughout her career as a teacher, scholar, community leader, and writer, she focused on education, bilingualism and Latina´s rights. Her tireless efforts left a legacy of essays, awards, photographs, and books that are now housed at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Mon. 5/27 7p: This episode of Espejos de Aztlan features a lecture and reading by Demetria Martinez, who reads from her novel, Mother Tongue, and talks about the 1988 conspiracy in connection with allegedly transporting two Salvadoran refugees into the United States. This show also includes a brief history and and recount of today's Sanctuary Movement with Sanctuary Coordinator, Marian Bock. Recordings were conducted by the Humans of New Mexico collective. With his sharp pen and observational prowess, the Chicano artist Eric J. García brings into focus social criticism regarding discrimination and the double standards in American society with courage and empathy. In this interview hosted by Cristina Baccin , Mr. García speaks about what inspired him to publish this compilation of works in the recently released book "Drawing on anger", published by the Ohio State University Press . Raised in the South Valley of Albuquerque, he r eceived his BFA with a minor in Chicano studies from the University of New Mexico, and completed his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. García's works have been exhibited nationally in major institutions such as the San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Latin American Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. Every summer, he comes back to Albuquerque and brings his work to his community through the Working Classroom.
