Episode Highlights ✅ Introduction to Lion Taming (00:00:00) Dr. Amy Vertrees introduces the “Lion Taming” master class on power and negotiation. Highlights her coaching program for women surgeons, helping them handle difficult colleagues, power dynamics, and negotiations. Defines BOSS as a suite of coaching and courses teaching crucial career skills often missing from surgical training. ✅ Who (or What) is the Lion? (00:02:08) “Lions” = Anyone who can harm your career, reputation, or confidence—senior colleagues, competitors, even patients. The most dangerous lions are sometimes the most powerless or wounded. Lion taming means: Finding your own power Managing those with power over you Acting despite fear Leading without formal authority ✅ Stress Responses in Conflict (00:05:52) Workplace conflicts trigger strong emotions like anger, fear, shame, or sadness. These emotions often stem from being dismissed, interrupted, or undermined. Four stress responses: Fight, Flight, Freeze, Fawn. Lion taming often involves recognizing and managing the “fight” response. Lesson from Androcles & the Lion: understanding and soothing the “lion's pain” can transform conflict into cooperation. ✅ New Approaches to Negotiation (00:12:15) Avoid using: The “Hammer” (intimidation) The “Armor” (withholding vulnerability) Instead, aim for: Honesty Genuine curiosity Emotional intelligence Insights from Kasia Urbaniak's “Woman's Guide to Power Unbound”: Dominance: Knowing and using your power Submission: Knowing what you want and influencing others to give it to you ✅ Self-Discovery & Managing Lions (00:16:35) Crucial steps for effective negotiation: Know your strengths and weaknesses Understand what you truly want Believe in your capacity to achieve it Reduce the lion's perceived threat by envisioning the best version of them. Negotiation isn't purely logical—it's driven by emotion and the sense of safety. ✅ Three Steps to Tame a Lion (00:25:20) Anchor: Create safety and stability within yourself. Align: Shift attention outward to engage strategically. Ask: Make a clear, powerful request. Recognize where your attention is: Inward focus = Submission Outward focus = Dominance ✅ Power is Not a Threat—It's a Tool (00:35:55) Power exists to influence, not intimidate. Dr. Vertrees encourages listeners to use their power for positive change. Power Negotiations course topics include: Identifying your needs Reading others' needs Practical negotiation techniques Surviving high-stakes conversations The “CEO Self-Concept”: Think of yourself as your own business, making choices aligned with your mission and values. ✅ Coaching Program Details (00:41:33) Weekly live sessions Private podcast + Facebook group Email support Discounted 1:1 coaching calls Dr. Vertrees encourages potential clients to discuss fit before joining. The Author Events Series presents The Intertextual Self: New Approaches to the Memoir REGISTER Memoirists most often focus on the authenticity of their own voice and experience, and how best to render on the page the intersection of memory and current insight. This traditional approach creates engaging and compelling personal narratives – singular texts of the self. But a new approach seems to be emerging, one in which writers grapple with other texts that have informed their experiences, shaped their thinking, and served as lenses through which to interpret their own lives. This event features three highly accomplished and daring authors who have taken this approach to their memoirs, highlighting how they absorbed other texts and made them integral to telling their own stories. Authors Chris Campanioni (A and B and Also Nothing, 2nd Ed.), Tyler Mills (The Bomb Cloud), and Leah Souffrant (Entanglements) represent a new generation of writers who have turned to an even wider range of texts to help them identify, craft, and share their own stories. Each of their strikingly original memoirs also include visual art created by the authors. Chris Campanioni was born in Manhattan in 1985 and grew up in a very nineties New Jersey. His research connecting media studies with studies of migration has been awarded a Mellon Foundation fellowship and the Calder Prize and his writing has received the International Latino Book Award, the Pushcart Prize, and the Academy of American Poets College Prize. He lives in Brooklyn. Leah Souffrant is a writer and artist committed to interdisciplinary practice. She is the author of Entanglements: Threads woven from history, memory, and the body (Unbound Edition Press 2023) and Plain Burned Things: A Poetics of the Unsayable (Collection Clinamen, PULG Liège 2017). The range of Souffrant's work involves poetics, visual studies and art, translation, and critical work in literature, feminist theory, and performance. With Abby Paige, she is a founding member of the LeAB Iteration Lab for theater art and performance. Her awards include the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry and her scholarship was recognized by the Center for the Study of Women & Society. Souffrant's poetry has been a finalist for the National Poetry Award. She keeps an art studio in Brooklyn and teaches writing at New York University. Born in Chicago, Tyler Mills (she/her) is the author of City Scattered (Snowbound Chapbook Award, Tupelo Press 2022), Hawk Parable (Akron Poetry Prize, University of Akron Press 2019), Tongue Lyre (Crab Orchard Series in Poetry First Book Award, Southern Illinois University Press 2013), and co-author with Kendra DeColo of Low Budget Movie (Diode Editions Chapbook Prize, Diode Editions 2021). Her memoir, The Bomb Cloud, received a Literature Grant from the Café Royal Foundation NYC. A poet and essayist, her poems have appeared in The New Yorker, The Guardian, The New Republic, The Believer, and Poetry, and her essays in AGNI, Brevity, Copper Nickel, River Teeth, and The Rumpus. She lived and taught in New Mexico four years, most recently serving as the Burke Scholar for the Doel Reed Center for the Arts in Taos, NM, and now teaches for Sarah Lawrence College's Writing Institute and the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center. She lives in Brooklyn, NY. Because you love Author Events, please make a donation when you register for this event to ensure that this series continues to inspire Philadelphians. To mark the occasion, MTPConnect's Andrew Bowskill, Co-chair of the Australian Antimicrobial Resistance Network, AAMRNet, and Anne Harris, Managing Director of Pfizer Australia and New Zealand join host Caroline Duell to discuss new approaches to fighting superbugs. Why it needs to be tackled holistically with a ‘One Health' approach across all sectors, including the environment, animal health and agriculture. They discuss the role of vaccines as the first line of defence, and why a new subscription-style reimbursement model in Australia will help support equitable access to new treatments and restimulate investment in antibiotics R&D to meet future needs. We also find out how the recent upgrade to Pfizer's manufacturing facility in Melbourne is an important development in the fight against AMR.

What if the way we approach change is broken? Would you try something new? Or stick to what you know? In this episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership, host Peter Winick sits down with Heather Hiscox, founder and CEO of Pause for Change and author of No More Status Quo: A Proven Framework to Change the Way We Change the World. Heather shares her journey of transforming frustration into a groundbreaking approach that's helping changemakers address tough challenges in the nonprofit, government, and philanthropic sectors. Heather's insights began with a simple yet powerful question: "Why aren't we working differently?" Years of seeing wasted efforts and weak results in the social sector pushed her to experiment. The result? The Pause framework—a tool for disrupting the status quo and creating meaningful impact. Her approach focuses on relationships, active listening, and rapid iteration, all built on a foundation of empathy and learning. Heather discusses how entrepreneurs often miss key listening skills, and how fear of "not being ready" keeps leaders from publishing ideas and moving forward. Instead, she encourages taking risks, learning in real-time, and embracing new methods to achieve different outcomes. Her clients—nonprofits, local governments, and philanthropic organizations—typically approach her for one of two reasons: something's broken, or they're unsure what's possible next. Heather uses her framework to guide them through the uncertainties, asking the right questions and driving real change. When it comes to marketing, Heather's strategy is driven by relationships and word of mouth. She's not just waiting for clients to find her—she's actively engaging them through LinkedIn, her online show The Possibility Project, and by knowing when to walk away from those who aren't ready to embrace her message. Heather's work is a call to action for leaders ready to stop settling for the status quo and start making the impact they've always envisioned. Three Key Takeaways: • Embrace new methods to create change: Heather emphasizes that traditional approaches in the social sector often fall short. To make real impact, leaders must ask different questions and take risks with new methods, like her Pause framework. • Relationships and listening are essential: Success hinges on building strong relationships and honing active listening skills. Whether in business or social change, empathetic listening and rapid iteration are key to solving complex problems. • Don't fear imperfection: Many leaders hesitate to publish content or make moves because it "isn't ready." Heather advocates for moving forward despite uncertainty, learning in real-time, and refining as you go. Heather has years of helping clients change how they think and work. If you are a thought leader, speaker, or author is your work creating sustainable change? Explore the topic more in this article by Peter Winick.
Hear from three leading experts in natural catastrophe modeling, as we explore how climate change is causing the insurance industry to rethink their approach to modeling extreme weather. In the previous episode, we discussed the challenges facing the insurance industry from climate change – so in this episode, we're going to dive into some of the solutions. Since natural catastrophe (Nat Cat) modeling was established in the late 1980s, the predictive power of their models has come from the statistical analysis of historical data. But as climate change continues to push the frequency and severity of extreme weather into uncharted territory, this approach begins to lose some of its potency. In response to this, new ways of thinking about Nat Cat modeling and insurance have emerged, with a focus on better capturing the effects of the changing climate on extreme weather. In this episode, we'll explore: The power of incorporating physics into the traditional Nat Cat modeling process; The recent explosion of earth system data and the role of machine learning in harnessing it; and How improved Nat Cat modelling can support innovative products, like parametric insurance, and what this means for closing the insurance gap. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine have discovered an intriguing function of neurons during sleep. They found that neurons activate in rhythmic waves to drive fluid through the brain, effectively flushing out metabolic waste and other toxins. Surfs up, and your brain gets cleaned. This cleaning action is crucial because it helps prevent the buildup that can lead to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The process of cleaning the brain, however, is complex. As we sleep, the cerebrospinal fluid that bathes the brain tissues collects debris and must navigate through a dense network of cells before it can be expelled. This study revealed that synchronized neural activity is what propels this fluid through the brain, with the waves generated by the neurons acting much like a pump. The implications of this research are profound, particularly in our understanding and potential treatment of neurological conditions. Li-Feng Jiang-Xie, a postdoctoral researcher and the first author of the study, proposes that bolstering this natural cleaning process could be a viable strategy to delay or even prevent the onset of neurodegenerative diseases, a breakthrough that could revolutionize healthcare. Once again, we are learning more and more about the importance of sleep and brain health, performance, and optimization. **Published on Feb. 28th, 2014, Journal of Nature.
