Send us a text - your number will not show, so if you want a response include an emailIn episode #138, I chat with Dr. Todd Fiore about how one slight pivot with your research question can lead to many positive outcomes. Todd is the Program Chair for the PhD in Organizational Development and Leadership, University of Arizona Global Campus.Highlights:· Research framed positively tends to result in more practical, solutions-oriented outcomes.· Positive research questions make it easier to recruit participants and encourage openness in data collection because participants may be more willing to engage when research focuses on positive practices rather than negative issues.· A positive approach can reduce challenges with IRB approval, particularly for sensitive topics like trauma.· Reframing helps novice researchers avoid injecting personal bias into their work - the dissertation is an academic product, not an advocacy project, and should be balanced and unbiased.· Focusing solely on problems in research can lead to emotional burnout; positive framing keeps the research journey lighter.· “Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you'll start having positive results” – a guiding philosophy for research success.Other episodes you don't want to miss:The Dissertation Shift with Dr. Todd Fiore The 4 H's of Doctoral Success with Dr. Todd FioreHow to Get a Job Teaching Online with Dr. Todd Fiore You might also enjoy: The Best Dissertation is a DONE Dissertation with Dr. Melanie ShawAcademic Writing as if Readers Matter with Dr. Len CassutoYES!! This strange thing called ‘knowledge' has always been a battleground in educational conversations - for example, in lots of loud calls for “knowledge-rich” curricula! Personally I'm very much in favour of knowledge and knowing, part of the buzz of following curiosity and inquiries! It's just the KIND of knowledge and knowing that we have been conditioned to value over others that I have an issue with! Minna Salami has been deeply challenging this hierarchy of knowing through her extensive work and amazing concept and book of the same title, Sensuous Knowledge. Her work coming from the tradition of African Feminism is to trouble the hierarchies, not simply invert them. Minna Salami is a Nigerian-Finnish and Swedish feminist author, social critic and currently Program Chair at THE NEW INSTITUTE. She is the author of Can Feminism Be African? (forthcoming Harper Collins) and Sensuous Knowledge: A Black Feminist Approach for Everyone (Bloomsbury 2020) which has been translated into multiple languages. Minna has also co-authored children's books and written content on feminism for numerous anthologies as well as educational textbooks. A leading voice of contemporary feminism, she has drawn over a million readers to her multiple award-winning blog MsAfropolitan.com. Her writing can be found in the Guardian, Project Syndicate, Al Jazeera, and The Philosopher, and many others. She is a frequent speaker and lecturer including at some of the world's most prominent institutions such as the UN, EU, Oxford Union, Cambridge Union, Yale University, and the Singularity University at NASA. She has worked as a Research Associate and Editor at Perspectiva, consulted governments on gender equality, written school curricula, and curated cultural events at The Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Minna is a Full Member of the Club of Rome, a BMW Foundation Responsible Leader and sits on the council of The Royal Institute of Philosophy and the boards of The African Feminist Initiative at Pennsylvania State University, The Interdisciplinary Journal for the Study of the Sahel, and is an associate with Perspectiva. She has served as chair for the House of Beautiful Business, a judge for the One World Media Awards, a nominator for the Prince Claus Foundation and the Princess of Asturias Foundation. An alumni of Lund University and SOAS University, Minna has lived in Nigeria, Sweden, Spain, and New York and now lives between London and Hamburg. This week I have the pleasure of talking with Faith Haug (she/her) Program Chair of the Mortuary Science program at Arapaho Community College. This conversation covers unique aspects of the Arapaho Mortuary Science program and more general mortuary program requirements. We also discuss the fact that Colorado doesn't require funeral directors to be licensed individually. This conversation happened at the end of 2023, just a few weeks after a funeral care disaster was discovered at Return to Nature Funeral Home in Colorado Springs. Since then, colorado lawmakers have presented a bill to require individual funeral director licensing, like every other US state. However, my conversation with Faith will reveal, that licensing might not be the only answer to preventing tragedies like the one at Return to Nature. On the Secret Witch Show today our guest is Phyllis Curott. Phyllis is one of America's first public Witches and a Wiccan Priestess. She's an attorney whose groundbreaking cases secured the rights of Witches, and she's the most widely published, internationally best-selling Wiccan author in the world. She's the creator of the ‘Witches Wisdom Tarot', and the online course Awaken the Witch Within, and her book ‘Spells for Living Well, A Witch's Guide to Manifesting Change, Wellbeing and Wonder'. The recipient of numerous honors, Phyllis was inducted into the Martin Luther King Jr. Collegium of Clergy and is a Trustee and Program Chair of the Parliament of the World's Religions. Phyllis is a third time guest to the Secret Witch Show, and in today's episode, we dive into all things divination. We explored what divination is, and how it can help sensitive souls heal and connect to your soul, exploring how everyone has a magic within and everyone is connected to the natural world - and how tarot can help you open to your gifts and fulfil your unique purpose. What You'll Learn from this Episode: Tarot is a tool that guides us home to ourselves - that helps us heal, reconnect to our wellbeing and soul; and it does this by providing answers to questions that help us access our own inner guidance system We learn, through tarot, to access our own wisdom, rather than to outsource our power to others - like some patriarchal models. The more we practise tarot, the more we learn to cultivate our own inner wisdom We can also access our inner wisdom by communing with the spirits of nature and see what they reveal to us. These spirits show us that we are never alone; we are constantly surrounded by wisdom and guidance - if we are open to receive its signs and synchronicities. Nature's magic is organised in a way to support us and heal us and help us and guide us and all we have to do is pay attention and participate We can sometimes feel that there's a fight between logic and magic, when we come to heal ourselves magically, and the truth is, there's a way that we can embrace both - it's not an either/or We each have unique soul gifts, and the route to finding them is through healing ourselves first, because it is in our wounds that our gifts are found. In today's very special podcast we will re-air a discussion that was originally recorded and produced by our good friends at the East-West Psychology Department of the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) for their own program, the East-West Psychology Podcast (https://east-westpsychologypodcast.com/). The discussion itself is an introduction to a set of two conferences to be held at the California Institute of Integral Studies in celebration of “150 Years of Sri Aurobindo, the Pioneer of Integral Consciousness.” The conferences will take place over the course of a week, starting on September 23, 2023 and concluding on September 30. This discussion is hosted by the East-West Psychology Podcast producers, Stephen Julich and Jonathan Kay. In this conversation, Circle for Original Thinking host and current Jean Gebser Society president, Glenn Aparicio Parry is a guest, along with Debashish Banerji, Chairman of the East-West Psychology Department. We hope this program will provide our listeners with some background on these very important conferences, and the life and work of Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950) who was the key figure in the development of a form of spiritual practice he called “integral yoga,” as well as the life and work of the Swiss philosopher and visionary, Jean Gebser, author of the magnum opus, The Everpresent Origin. THE CONFERENCES: The first conference, “Sustainability and Contemplative Civilization: The Integral Vision of Sri Aurobindo,” organized by the East-West Psychology Department (EWP) and the Asian Contemplative and Transcultural Studies concentration (ACTS), will engage with the possibilities, problems and potential of a sustainable civilization based on a contemplative praxis of deep relationality and extended identity as implicit in the vision and teaching of Sri Aurobindo and as explicit in the experimental community of Auroville. The second conference, “The Emergence of Integral Consciousness: Jean Gebser, Sri Aurobindo, Carl Jung, Teilhard De Chardin,” organized by the Jean Gebser Society, will address the coming integral age as foreseen by Gebser, Aurobindo, Jung, and Teilhard de Chardin. Each of these visionary thinkers in their own way foresaw the emergence of a new structure of consciousness beyond the limits of rational thought. Debashish Banerji is a Bengali scholar and Haridas Chaudhuri Professor of Indian Philosophies and Cultures and the Doshi Professor of Asian Art at CIIS. He is also the Program Chair for the East-West Psychology department. Prior to CIIS, he served as Professor of Indian Studies and Dean of Academics at the University of Philosophical Research in Los Angeles, CA.Stephen Julich is currently core faculty in the East-West Psychology Department at the California Institute of Integral Studies where he teaches classes Jungian Depth Psychology and Western Mysticism, Magic and Esotericism.Jonathan Kay is a transcultural musician, and is currently a PhD student in the department of East-West Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco under the mentorship of Dr. Debashish Banerji. We wish to again state our very deep gratitude to the people at the East-West Psychology Department and the California Institute of Integral Studies for the critical work that they do every day, and their generosity in sharing the content of this episode with Circle for Original Thinking. Did you know that Magic is rooted in humanity's oldest religion, shamanism? Or that it was the primary practice of the Euro-Indigenous peoples? One of the most surprising things I learned from this week's episode about Magic is realizing I have been practicing magic without even knowing it, and I bet you have been too! That's why I am so excited to share this fascinating interview with you with this week's special guest, Phyllis Curott, author of Spells for Living Well. Here's a little information about her: A spiritual pioneer, Phyllis Curott is an attorney, writer and one of America's first public Witches. Her 5 international best-selling books have been published in 14 languages, making her the most widely published Wiccan author. Phyllis received the 2018 Service to Humanity Award from the One Spirit Interfaith Seminary and the 2020 Person of the Year Award from Kindred Spirit. Phyllis was the first Wiccan Trustee of the Parliament of the World's Religions, and was elected Vice Chair of the 2015 Parliament, creating the Women's Assembly, and served as the Program Chair for the historic 2021 Parliament attended by Patriarch Bartholomew of the Eastern Orthodox Church and blessed by Pope Francis. Her YouTube series on Wicca has almost 3 million views. Phyllis continues to write, teach, and lecture internationally on the embodied spiritual wisdom of Mother Earth, Nature's "secret magic" and why the world needs its Witches. In this episode, Phyllis will share her journey from lawyer to priestess, and how you can begin to claim your own inner priestess by connecting to the magic of the natural world. We also talk about why now, more than ever, the earth needs all of us to reclaim our ‘inner witch.' To receive Phyllis' free gift, A Spell to Live In Harmony, click here - https://www.phylliscurott.com/well Key Learnings: Magic and miracles are the same. Both require us to connect to and be open to receiving the benevolent energy that is life. The word witch is from wicce (pronounced witch-a) which means wise one. Witchcraft, therefore, is the craft of the wise. It includes being a healer, midwife, conductor of ceremonies, interpreter of dreams, and one who is connected to both the spirit world and the natural world. Magic is not about manipulating supernatural forces, or Nature, or treating the world like an inanimate vending machine. Magic is not about seek to have power of Creation, or the living beings who live with us, or the forces that make it all work. That approach is un-natural. Cast spells to discover what the wicces knew: Magic is the source that creates, the force that unites, the flow of divine energy into form and form into energy in a regenerating dance that creates and sustains and re-creates life. “Cast spells as spiritual practices and you'll discover that all spells are, in one way or another, love spells.” Phyllis Curott Click here to receive the FREE Gift – A spell to live in harmony To purchase Phyllis' book Spells for Living Well, click here To learn more about Phyllis Curott's work and teachings, click here If you love the image on the wall behind me of Mother Mary Blessing the World, you can order your own museum quality copy at www.deepaliu.com
