The Hawkeye Four Down Territory Podcast is all Iowa Hawkeye football all the time. Each week Brian and Zach go through their Four Downs relating to all aspects of the Iowa football program. Brian and Zach break down what is going on with the Hawkeyes and do a deep dive on the headlines coming out of…
We wait all year for the next football season, and, just like that, 11 game weeks are past and we are on to the final football Satur . . . er, Friday of the season. Before wrapping up with the final Hawkeye 4DT breakdown of the season, Brian and Zach look back on a 29-13 road win against Maryland, which saw the first start of the Jackson Stratton era, two 100 yard rushers, and a first half offensive production by the Terrapins that clearly had Brian Ferentz's fingerprints all over it! The guys also tip their caps to a great group of seniors (and maybe a junior or two) getting ready to play their last game in Kinnick on Friday night. After an up and down 2024 season that saw a resurgent offense and a frustratingly inconsistent defense, Brian and Zach look ahead to one final regular season game, as they break down the Black Friday matchup with the (bowl bound) Nebraska Cornhuskers. Will this come down to yet another last second field goal to decide it? Download and listen to see what the Hawkeye 4DT guys are predicting this Black Friday. Go Hawks! After the great lost Wisconsin recap episode and a bye week following another disappointing road loss, the Hawkeye 4DT guys are finally back! Unfortunately, not as much positivity on the heels of a 20-17 loss in the Rose Bowl to B1G newcomer, UCLA. But that's not to say there is nothing to talk about - anytime the Hawks are staring down the barrel of starting their fifth string QB, things are bound to get a little weird. Join us this week as the guys break down a wide range of topics before giving their thoughts on the final road game of the season - hopefully we see more Minnesota and less MSU / UCLA this week! After witnessing some (former) Wildcat on Wildcat violence on Saturday, we are now looking at a new QB1 in Iowa City this week Brendan Sullivan came on in relief of an injured Cade McNamara to lead Iowa to 35 points in just over 15 minutes. Though we never want to see an injury, McNamara's concussion midway through the second quarter gave the Iowa fans what they have been clamoring for all season - an extended look at former Northwestern starting QB, Brendan Sullivan, who, after some early three and outs, seemed to transform Iowa's offense into an unstoppable juggernaut. Well, before everyone gets ahead of ourselves, join Brian and Zach with a look back at what changed with #1 at QB1 against Northwestern in what turned out to be another "fun" Iowa football game, en route to a third 40-point performance from a maddingly inconsistent Iowa football team. While the competition ramps up again when the Wiscon Ric Flairs Badgers come to town, the Hawkeye 4DT guys find some reasons for optimism and renewed interest in a season that won't meet expectations, but could be a glimpse into the future evolution of the Hawkeyes' new look offense. Well . . . that wasn't good. After what felt like a corner-turning win against Washington and an another opportunity to add to the Hawkeyes' season win total, the big goals of the season were severely derailed with a surprising defeat in East Lansing against a dominant Michigan State team. The Hawkeye 4DT guys revisit a total team collapse and try to identify what went wrong in an embarrassing, 32-20 loss in prime time. Plenty of blame to go around, but the guys pinpoint their three primary culprits that caused this defeat. With Northwestern coming to town on Saturday, Zach and Brian take a look at the 3-4 Wildcats and each give their predictions for what is quickly becoming a wildly unpredictable Iowa squad. So, that's what it feels like to have fun watching college football?!? This week, the 4DT guys return to discuss a full team, all three phases, four quarter, rude welcoming of new B1G-member, the Washington Huskies. With 40 points scored by the offense, plenty of positives to talk about, including discussions about seven straight scoring drives, comparing RB greats, and analyzing why the Tim Lester seems to be clicking in such a short amount of time (particularly when compared to the struggles faced in 2012). Finally, Brian and Zach turn their attention to the MSU Spartans as the Hawks travel to East Lansing as nearly a touchdown favorite. Even though it was the result we expected, it doesn't mean it's a result we liked. This week, the Hawkeye 4DT guys relive another lackluster performance against one of college football's blue bloods - this time at the hands of the Buckeyes of the Ohio State. While it's tough to take too much from a game like this, Brian and Zach nonetheless dive deep into Saturday's effort and examine it in the context of this season, the past several seasons, and the greater Ferentz era. But, with seven games left, it's time to focus on the rest of the schedule, starting this week with a home game against one of the newest B1G members, the Washington Huskies, who are flying high after a 10 point win in a 2022 National Championship rematch against Michigan. Now that the bye week is behind us, the Hawkeye 4DT guys get to focus on the #3 Buckeyes in Columbus on Saturday. Unsurprisingly, the guys view this one a little differently, though Brian does bring a little more positivity and optimism than would normally be expected - but there is no doubt that both see a very big challenge against the “best team money can buy.” Will this week be the week that the defense is able to put it all together? Will the passing game get on track? Will Iowa keep it close? Tune in and see what Brian and Zach think before the Hawks get their chance to shock the CFB world. Floyd is home again and Iowa fans get to enjoy a joyous bye week!! After enduring another slow start, Kaleb Johnson and the running game ground the Gophers into dust with a 17 point outburst in the third quarter, paving the way to a 31-14 blowout in Minneapolis! This week, Brian and Zach take the bye week opportunity to enjoy and recap the Minnesota win and do a deep dive on the first third of the season - focusing a lot of attention on the growth and changes on the offensive side of the ball. While next week's episode will focus on the coming game against the Ohio State, the Hawkeye 4DT guys couldn't ignore the chance to start discussing the challenge and opportunity presented by a game against the #3 Buckeyes. After getting back in the win column, some might say we still don't know a lot about the 2024 Iowa Hawkeyes with more questions than answers so far this season. Is the rushing offense for real? What is with all the big plays against us? Is Kaleb Johnson a Heisman candidate? Can CDJ and Tory Taylor get extra years of eligibility? Can we play a full football game? How much bacon would Floyd yield? After a convincing (on paper) victory over Troy, Iowa opens up the B1G slate with a road trip to Minneapolis to take on PJ and the Gophers - with Brian and Zach in attendance! Download and listen to see how the Hawkeye 4DT guys answer some of those questions and more and hear their final impressions on this team after wrapping up the non-conference slate and heading into B1G play. Tough to say where it all went wrong, but enough went wrong that, after a 13-0 halftime lead, your Hawkeyes ultimately fall to Iowa State, 20-19, on a last second 54 yard field goal. The guys try to work through what they saw - finding significant positives in the day of Kaleb Johnson, but also looking in a lot of other directions for some less positive performances, including quarterback, offensive coordinator, and the defensive backfield. With the Troy Trojans coming to town, Iowa has one more non-conference tune-up before the B1G season gets going - download and listen to see what Brian and Zach will be looking for this week and what they believe that could mean for the rest of the season. With the standard caveat - “it was just an FCS team” - that Illinois State game was a lot of fun! In what seems like forever, Iowa was efficient and effective on offense, scoring 5 offensive TDS, with 3 TD catches by WRs (matching the WR total from 2023 and exceeding the total from 2022, all in one game) and racking up close to 500 total. yards. As the Hawkeye 4DT guys break down in this week's podcast, that offensive output was, at least for one week, quite entertaining. Of course, it was game one against an overmatched opponent, so it doesn't mean there were not areas for concern, including a slow start that saw a penalty-riddled first half only result in 6 points for your Iowa Hawkeyes, before we saw some of those early green chutes come alive in the second half. After looking back at the week 1 results, both for the Hawks and around the B1G, Zach and Brian turn their attention to Iowa State (or, as Brian is fond of saying, “Hate Week”). We all know this in-state rivalry game is always a close affair - what will the 2024 tilt bring for Hawkeyes fans? Now that all the previews have been shared, the wait is over - we are finally in game week for your Hawks! For the first time in 2024, the Hawkeye 4DT guys bring you a 4DT breakdown in advance of this weekend's season opener against the Redbirds of Illinois State. No more exciting time of year than the anticipation of a new season - particularly one that offers so much promise of change on the offensive side of the ball. But before things are officially kicked off, Brian and Zach offer up their final win and loss predictions for each of the games on the 2024 schedule. Will they be right? Another week closer to kicking off the 2024 campaign for your Iowa Hawkeyes! Before the Hawkeye 4DT guys move into game-week mode with their initial 4DT breakdown of the season, they first have some final pre-season housekeeping to do with their final phase preview with the special teams. Are we getting to "In Levar We Trust" territory with the special teams? But before getting into the breakdown of the special teams unit, join Brian and Zach for a discussion of some significant breaking news with Kirk Ferentz's (and Jon Budmayr's) one-game suspension for recruiting violations (which the guys didn't even know was a thing in this day and age). Finally, stick around for the much-coveted 4DT pre-season awards as the guys make their picks for some stand out Hawks in 2024. While last week was all about change, this week is all about consistency as the guys preview the defensive side of the ball. The Hawks have won 10 games in a season a couple times recently, and we know that much of the credit goes to Broyles Award winner, Phil Parker, and his stalwart defensive units! Hawkeye 4DT - 2024 Offensive Preview The Hawkeye 4DT guys are (finally) back to kick-off another set of pre-season previews as we all count down to the kickoff of the 2024 football season! Starting this year's previews is the offensive side of the ball. Given this is Iowa football, we all know what to expect from Iowa's offense - well, that was the case until Brian Ferentz was relieved of his duties and Iowa (finally) hired a new OC, Tim Lester. This year, Brian and Zach start with their reactions to the hire before doing a position-by-position breakdown of Lester's inaugural offensive campaign. As mentioned (several times during this week's episode), at least it can't be worse! “A chip and a chair . . .” “All it takes is one . . .” “So you're saying there's a chance . . .” No matter how you look at it, your Iowa Hawkeyes are decided underdogs as they take on the undefeated and playoff-hopeful Michigan Wolverines in the B1G Championship for the second time in three years. Brian and Zach do a deep dive on Iowa's best opponent of the year in the biggest game of the year, including what the guys see as Iowa's potential (narrow) path to victory. But before doing that, Brian and Zach take a look back at Iowa's quintessential 2023 Black Friday win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers (who won't be going bowling for the seventh straight season thanks to the Hawks!) as well as revisiting the season generally to try to figure out how, with all the adversity, this team was able to get to that vaunted 10-win level once again. And, finally, what we learned about this team that could provide a small amount of hope for that 11th win in Indianapolis!! The 2023 Iowa Hawkeyes - where the improbable becomes the probable! The Hawkeye 4DT guys look back on a very 2023 win against the Illini, which also happened to clinch Iowa's third B1G West crown. That is right, no need to sweat out the final weekend, all we have to do is watch The Game to see who the Hawks will face in Indy. What's that you say? We still have to play Nebraska? Well, the guys also take a break from celebrating the newest trophy in the case to look ahead to the Black Friday matchup as Iowa looks to push into the rarified air of 10 regular season wins! So THAT is what is complimentary football looks like. At least for once in 2023, the Hawkeye 4DT guys got to see a complete team win, which was a lot of fun! The guys are able to break out of the Groundhog Day feeling from the prior few weeks and dig in on what they saw against Rutgers, why it was different, and what fans' expectations should be for the rest of the season. Believe it or not, with the 22-0 win in Kinnick last Saturday, your 2023 Iowa Hawkeyes have already clinched a share of the final B1G West Championship. The key question for the rest of the season - was Saturday a mirage, or have we finally seen the offense start to turn the corner? Join Zach and Brian this week as they discuss that and more (including several references to Indianapolis) in this week's preview of an important Senior Day tilt against the feisty Illini from Illinois. Somehow, some way, your 2023 Iowa Hawkeyes just keep on winning - after another lackluster offensive performance, the Hawks nonetheless stood tall after a 53-yard, three-run shot into the basket in right centerfield by Drew Stevens, once again cementing the team's status as the B1G West leader, controlling its own destiny. The guys look back at what we saw on Saturday, which included an appearance from CDJ on offense, Kaleb Brown's first catch as a Hawkeye, and another epic goal line stand from the ever improving defense. It's not always pretty, but at 7-2, the team is tracking toward a consequential final three games, the first of which kicks off Saturday at 2:30 from beautiful Kinnick Stadium against the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers. While Rutgers is usually viewed as an "easy win," with this year's offensive struggles and a feisty team from Piscataway, the guys dive into what we can expect to see as Iowa goes for win #8 on the season. An initial review suggests that the early 28.5 O/U makes a lot of sense as both teams generally struggle on offense and boast very strong defenses. As always, bet the "under"! Another week, another "off schedule" episode as the guys dive deep this week into the news that Brian Ferentz will not return in 2024. Brian and Zach share their reactions, along with their view on what it means for the rest of the 2023 season and beyond, including what led to the announcement, Kirk Ferentz's future plans, current status of the QB room, and more. As Kirk was quick to remind us all on Tuesday, the Hawks do have a game this week - so the guys also give their preview and predictions on this Saturday's contest against the Northwestern Wildcats, which will take place within the "friendly confines" of Wrigley Field.
Buckle up, Hawkeye fans, this one is not for the faint of heart. While there is typically no Hawkeye 4DT during the bye week, the events of Saturday's controversial battle for Floyd of Rosedale were enough to bring Brian and Zach together for this special bye week episode. After a lengthy discussion about the best play in Kinnick Stadium history that was absolutely stolen from Cooper DeJean, the guys discuss the one topic upon which everyone who watched the game last Saturday agrees - Iowa's abysmal offense and it's ability to continue to find new lows. Indeed, after two prior seasons during which the guys repeatedly stated “it can't get worse than this . . .,” the Hawkeyes continue to prove the guys wrong. Finally, Brian and Zach share their thoughts on the overall state of the Iowa football program, including changes that they hope to see at the top of the program. This one is not a fun one, but download and see if you agree with the guys' conclusions about their beloved Hawkeyes. While the 24th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes are never the prettiest car on the lot, they once again prove the doubters (including your favorite Hawkeye 4DT commentators) wrong with a 15-6 win on the road in windy and rainy Madison (helping at least one of those 4DT commentators cash in on the money-line / under parlay to cap off a nice weekend in Las Vegas). After that improbable B1G West win up at Camp Randall that saw your Iowa Hawks put together a defensive gem and just enough offense to pull off the loser-leaves-town upset over the Wisconsin Badgers, we go from the Bull to the Pig as Iowa takes on Minnesota back in Kinnick. In this game, PJ Fleck will try to beat Iowa for the first time ever and Minnesota will look to pick up its first road win in Iowa City since 1999. While Brian and Zach enjoyed the win and acknowledge the B1G West standings, there were still plenty of things to discuss, including an anemic offense that found just one big play (which was enough to win the game) and another serious injury to one of Iowa's few remaining offensive skill position standouts. Download and listen this week as the guys look ahead to the contest for Floyd and the rest of the 2023 regular season to see if they believe that 11-1 and another trip to Indy are really on the table. While Iowa has posted a 5-1 record through the first half of the season, we have all been looking forward to this weekend - the de facto B1G West Championship game at Camp Randall. Before turning to the much anticipated showdown with the Badgers, the guys look back at another (ugly) win against Purdue, which included the best rushing attack of the season, the worst passing performance in four decades, and finding a new way to win a game in 2023. After looking back, Brian and Zach look forward to the Wisconsin matchup - a well-known foe, with a new look approach. Welcome to the Deacon Hill era at Iowa! In this week's episode, the Hawkeye 4DT guys get into the good (Iowa won), the bad (the offense, still), and the ugly (QB1's likely season ending injury). We went into the game against Sparty knowing that we wouldn't be able to make any final conclusions about any offensive progress, but any hope of a smooth progression ended when Cade McNamara went down at the two yard line and didn't get back up under his own power. Brian and Zach discuss that, what they saw from the Deacon Hill- led offense from there, and the excitement of the fourth quarter. Of course, after the last two weeks, positivity is still hard to come by, but, hey, at least there are some second down topics to discuss this week! Check out this week's episode to see what the guys expect to see when the Boilermakers come to town this upcoming Saturday! In an episode where there is both nothing to say and plenty to say, the guys get on the therapy couch and talk through Saturday's embarrassing 31-0 loss in prime time. Brian and Zach discuss both the micro and macro from the loss to Penn State, including what it means to be a fan of Iowa football in 2023 and where to go from here. Please download and listen this week - while this episode is lighter on structure than usual, it includes plenty of emotion and goes deep on many aspects of modern Hawkeye football including the obviously recent lean years on offense, the inability to compete with the top teams in the B1G, and changes the guys hope to see. But, we all know what hope does for you as an Iowa fan these days . . . After two long years, the Iowa offense finally won a game in blowout fashion after cruising to a dominant 41-10 win over Western Michigan. Don't let the score fool you, though, as it was not always smooth sailing on Saturday and the win came at a great cost as it appeared that Luke Lachey will be lost for the season. Brian and Zach do celebrate the positives this week, in particular an effective and efficient running game that has not been seen in Iowa City for a while, but the guys discuss some of the issues coming out of this weekend's contest - including Iowa's slow start and the rash of injuries on offensive side of the ball. Brian and Zach also take a look at Saturday's prime time matchup at Penn State as conference play starts up - business certainly picks up in a hurry with Iowa taking on a top 10 Nittany Lion squad on the road. The Cy-Hawk Trophy is back home in Iowa City after a 20-13 Iowa win on the road in Ames! After another fast start and the first defensive score of the season, your Hawks held on to go 2-0 on the young season. It was not always easy on Saturday - join Brian and Zach as they break down what they saw, both the good and the bad and ultimately what gave Iowa the edge to stay unbeaten After that the guys turn their focus toward Saturday's final non-conference game against Western Michigan, and while there is not as much time spent breaking down the Xs and Os of Saturday's contest, they do take a bit of trip down memory lane to look at the last time the then-PJ Fleck Broncos came to Iowa City and the good times had by those in the black and gold! No matter what happens the rest of the season, Hawkeye Fans will always have that first quarter against Utah State. At least that is kind of how it felt by the end of Saturday's 24-14 win with Cade McNamara sitting on the sidelines while Deacon Hill tried to chuck the ball over the mountains. Of course, while it was easy to overreact to Iowa's lightning fast start, it was just as easy to overreact to some of the struggles during the week 1 contest. To provide some perspective, Brian and Zach first look around the B1G West to see how Iowa's 2023 debut stacked up to the rest of West. The Hawkeye 4DT guys then complete their standard weekly breakdown by diving into a few positive takeaways from Saturday and highlighting a couple of areas of concern as the team heads into “Hate Week” against ISU. Download and listen this week to see whether the guys think Iowa can build some momentum in Ames, or whether the dream of 15-0 crashes down before it even gets off the ground. And just like that, it is finally game week #1 for your 2023 Iowa Hawkeyes! This week, Brian and Zach provide their first “Four Down Territory” breakdown of the season as they look at Iowa's first opponent of the year - the Aggies of Utah State. Good news is that we are in the “nothing but optimism” stage of the season, but in true Hawkeye 4DT fashion, the guys still find some areas of concern (though not really sure what the issue is, it is 100% clear that our transfer QB will be starting - what's that, we have two transfer QBs? That certainly muddies the water a bit . . .). But before Drew Stevens gets his boot into the first kickoff for the season, the guys also wanted to get their season win/loss predictions on record - download today to see how your season predictions stack up! This week the guys round out the pre-season shows with their deep dive on the special teams units before handing out the coveted 4DT Pre-Season Awards! First, on special teams - while we have all grown accustomed to "Punting is Winning" and are hoping that this year "Winning is Winning," it is good to know that there are no camp battles or uncertainty in the place kicking and punting duties with the starters returning 2023, both of whom had very effective 2022 campaigns. The return game, on the other hand, is a bigger question mark… And no pre-season preview would be complete without the 4DT Pre-Season Awards - always a fan favorite, tune in to see if your picks made the cut this year! Just one more week until the first 4DT game week breakdown -- added bonus, there will be college football on your TVs this weekend! You can download and subscribe to the Hawkeye 4DT Podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, Pocket Casts, and all of your favorite podcast services. It felt good for Hawkeye 4DT to get back to recording last week and catch up on eight months of topics, including a deep dive on the “new-look” Hawkeye offense. That feeling is even better this week as the topic turns to the defensive side of the ball, which can be described in recent years as "dominant" with little to no hyperbole. Safe to say that Zach and Brian are confident in this year's defensive unit carrying that torch with talent across the starting 11, though you should tune in to see what could cause some concern on that side of the ball as the season approaches. But before diving into the position-by-position breakdown, the guys discuss the news coming out of Kids' Day, including the key topic on everyone's mind - Cade McNamara's health. While you are cruising Twitter and the message boards looking for good news on that topic, please download and listen to this week's episode! After several long months away, Brian and Zach looked at the calendar and realized it was already August and that the 2023 football season was right around the corner. (In hindsight, it should have been obvious with the Twitter “Saturdays to Football” countdowns and B1G media days, but summer in the Midwest is fleeting and can be distracting!). Alas, the Hawkeye 4DT guys are back and ready to talk some football! But not before hitting many of the highlights (and some lowlights) in Iowa sports over the last 8 months. However, do not worry, the annual season preview series kicks off this week, with a deep dive on the group all Iowa fans are hoping to see the most improvement from - the (still Brian Ferentz-led) Iowa offense! Join us over the coming weeks as Brian and Zach preview the defense and special teams and hand out some preseason hardware before diving into the Hawks' week 1 opponent - the Utah State Aggies! After a disappointing end to a season with plenty of ups and downs in a winnable B1G West, the guys sat down to share thoughts on the Nebraska let down and some final reactions to the season, including potential offseason changes at QB, OC, and more. As activity in the transfer portal heats up, look for Brian and Zach to be back in a couple of weeks to discuss the latest developments and Iowa's 2022 bowl destination. Floyd stays home for another year as Iowa goes to frosty Kinnick North and takes care of business on an extra cold day in Minneapolis by beating the Gophers 13-10. The guys break down that result, focus on a couple of stars (one regular on second down and a 2022 newcomer to praise), wonder what happened to a phase on defense that is usually a strength, and start thinking seriously about potentially winning the B1G West. Only Nebraska stands in the Hawkeyes' way to back-to-back B1G West championships (and a date against a B1G blue blood in which Iowa would likely be 20+ point underdogs).
Who needs offense with a defense like that? The guys react to a game that featured another dominating performance from the defense - including a virtuoso performance from do-it-all sophomore, Cooper DeJean who is making a case for best player on the team - and an offensive effort that provided just enough opportunistic firepower to give Iowa a relatively comfortable 24-10 win over those stinking Badgers. With the Hawks sitting (tied for) first place in the B1G West, the guys look at what's ahead, including a breakdown of this weekend's battle for Floyd of Rosedale. Oh, and there is also some discussion of that Kadyn Proctor visit to Oregon. The momentum keeps building for your Iowa Hawkeyes after an impressive 24-3 showing against Chucky Jones and the Purdue Boilermakers. Join this week as the guys break down the win, Kaleb Johnson's big day as RB1, and another dominant defensive performance. Good timing for back-to-back good performances with the annual “Ric Flair Game” against perennial thorn in the Hawks' side, the Wisconsin Badgers. What a difference a week (and having Northwestern next on the schedule) can make as your Hawkeyes looked, dare we say, good on Saturday en route to a 33-13 win over the Fighting Fitzgeralds. At least for this week, you can expect to hear a lot of positivity, even from Brian, as Zach and Brian take a closer look at an offense that was fun to watch, even if it didn't eclipse that magical 400 yard mark. Before you think the guys have completely swung the other way, there is a dose of reality as they look ahead to Saturday's opponent, the Charlie Jones-led Purdue Boilermakers, who have had no shortage of offensive output against Iowa in recent years. Another week, another disappointing performance from your Hawkeye football team. While we didn't expect to win against the #2 Ohio State Buckeyes, we expected…something…more than that. Brian and Zach, unsurprisingly, focus much of their time and attention this week on the continued offensive deficiencies, but also dive into the fraught topics of coaching, nepotism, and leadership within Fort Kinnick. You won't find a lot of optimism here this week, but with Northwestern on tap for Saturday, the Hawks do have a chance for a potential get well game as the 1-6 Wildcats. Another week, another lackluster offensive effort and disappointing loss - this time to the B1G West leading Illinois Fighting Illini. With bye week and some travel among the ranks, recording scheduling got a little off track, but Brian and Zach look back at that frustrating game before diving into comments from the coordinators - focusing primarily on the offensive coordinator as they look for the upside in keeping Brian Ferentz in that position - and then finally heading into the bye week and offering some thoughts on Iowa's upcoming opponent, the Ohio State University. How bad can it get on Saturday against a team that averages almost 50 points per game? What does the rest of this season look like? Though closer, on paper, than the B1G Championship game, the Hawkeyes once again fall to the Michigan Wolverines, this time in a rare loss to a Top 5 team at Kinnick Stadium. The 4DT guys break down what they saw in a 27-14 loss that was never really that close, but not before spending a few minutes focusing on a wild, wild B1G West, which features a 6-way tie for first place (including your Iowa Hawkeyes). Rare to say that a game against Illinois is a must-win, but after a 1-1 start in a wide open B1G West, this week's tilt may very well qualify. Though far from a finished product, we saw the Hawkeyes open the 2022 B1G season with a win behind another dominating defensive effort (starting to feel like a broken record) and some incrementally improved play on the offensive side of the ball. In addition to providing their early thoughts on the B1G West, the Hawkeye 4DT guys look back at the opening conference win at Rutgers and discuss what signs of life they saw on offense before looking ahead to this weekend's matchup that sees the #4 Michigan Wolverines come to Iowa City. Although it took approximately seven hours over two days to complete a game that was not always pretty, the Hawkeyes finally pulled off an early-morning win against the hapless Nevada Wolfpack - holding them to no points and finally getting on the scoreboard with multiple TDs in a game for the first time this season. Download and listen to hear the guys' reactions and what they believe that game means (or could mean) for the balance of the 2022 season as the Hawkeyes enter the B1G schedule with a trip out East to take on Rutgers, which is very similar to Iowa with a good defense, inept offense, and impeccable punting. This week we may truly see that Punting is Winning. You can download and subscribe to the Hawkeye 4DT Podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, Pocket Casts, and all of your favorite podcast services. After another disappointing week, Brian and Zach once again have a hard time finding anything positive to say about the Hawkeye offense - despite what their moms said about not having something nice to say, the guys had plenty to say about the ongoing offensive woes and the “breaking” news that Spencer Petras would continue as QB1 this week. Somewhat lost in the negativity surrounding the Hawks's loss to ISU was another very good game from the defense, so the guys take time to focus on two standouts from an ascending secondary unit. Download and listen this week, because if this offense doesn't improve, there may not be many episodes left… You can download and subscribe to the Hawkeye 4DT Podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, Pocket Casts, and all of your favorite podcast services. After an uneven week 1, which saw the Iowa defense and punting game dominate and the offense struggled to cross the 50-yard line, let alone the goal line, Brian and Zach attempt to regroup ahead of what should be an exciting rivalry week matchup against the Iowa State Cyclones. Is there improvement on the horizon from week 1 to week 2? Will the guys stick it out this season? Download and listen as the guys provide their first 4DT breakdown of the season. After working their way through all the preseason preparation and breakdowns of all three phases for the 2022 Hawkeyes and handing out some hardware, Brian and Zach are finally back with their first game week episode of 2022. At the end of this week, fans will finally be back at Kinnick and we will have Iowa football back on our television sets as the Hawks are set to take on the SDSU Jackrabbits. Instead of the typical 4DT breakdown this week, the guys decided to focus on a few questions they hope are answered (or, at least, begin to be answered) in Week 1. And, in the final bit of preseason housekeeping, Brian and Zach work their way through the schedule and W/L the season. Does Brian think the Hawks will break .500? Is Zach stuck on 15-0? As the days to kickoff dwindle into the teens, Brian and Zach wrap up their pre-season previews with their analysis of the third phase - special teams. While there are lots of question marks this year, there is reason for hope, as “in Levar we trust” becomes more important than ever with the graduation of Caleb Shudak at kicker and the surprising departure of Charlie Jones, the reigning B1G Special Teams Player of the Year. After breaking down the special teams, the guys turn their focus to one of their favorite annual segments - the 4DT Pre-Season Awards! Who took home this year's coveted honors? After working through the defense last week, Brian and Zach turn their attention to the offensive side of the ball this week. Unfortunately, after all the positivity from the defensive analysis, the guys were not able to maintain that optimism after reviewing the 2021 offensive stats, which, upon further analysis were, um, offensive, to say the least. But, were the guys able to find some reasons for hope in 2022? Download and find out as this week's preseason episode provides a breakdown of each position group on the offensive side of the ball. After a long offseason hiatus that saw a commitment from the highest rated recruit in Iowa's history and California becoming Big Ten country, Brian and Zach are back this week to start their in depth preview of the 2022 Iowa Hawkeyes. After sifting through the myriad offseason topics, the guys look back at the 2021 defense and debate whether that unit was ultimately "elite" or whether that image was only held together with the headline-grabbing turnover rate before turning their attention to the 2022 defense with a detailed analysis of the two-deep (and new arrivals and those in waiting) at all three levels. Looking ahead to the coming weeks, Hawkeye 4DT will bring you its offensive preview, special teams preview, and pre-season awards before bringing you the first 4DT breakdown of the year for the SDSU Jackrabbits. We always knew we would put out a new Hawkeye 4DT episode with our reaction to the Nebraska game, but what we didn't know heading into Black Friday was (1) we would be talking about another double digit comeback sparked by a timely special teams play, (2) Michigan would turn The Game into a laugher, and (3) PJ and the Gophers would row Iowa right into Indy. After an entertaining weekend of B1G football, Brian and Zach got together to talk about your (outright) B1G West Division Champions and another trip to the B1G Championship Game to face another team from Michigan - this time against the No. 2 Michigan Wolverines. While not always pretty, the guys talk about how this team could be remembered in the pantheon of KF Iowa teams if they are able to pull off another upset of a Top 5 B1G opponent in prime time. See you all in Indy!
Despite the roller-coaster ride this season, after another ugly B1G West game, your 2021 Hawks sit at 9-2 with a chance for a 10- win regular season. With that backdrop, Zach and Brian try to put the season in context before providing their final regular season 4DT breakdown for 2021. The guys also intended to provide their Nebraska preview, but some breaking news mid-recording forced the guys to re-calibrate their game predictions on the fly. Check out this week's episode to learn whether the Hawkeye 4DT guys expect to see the Hawks leave Lincoln (again) with the Heroes Trophy.
