In this episode, we explore Tim Lester's first season as Iowa's offensive coordinator in 2024, analyzing how he revitalized one of college football's most stagnant units into a promising offense. With the Hawkeyes showing significant improvement—highlighted by Kaleb Johnson—we explore what worked, what didn't, and whether Lester can build on this foundation in his second year. We discuss and analyze the stats from last year, the strategies, and the potential for Iowa's offense to reach even greater heights in year two under Lester. Finally, we're diving into the exciting news as Iowa hires Warren Ruggiero as their new senior offensive analyst. Warren brings a wealth of experience and offensive firepower to a program looking to elevate its passing game in 2025.

Collin begins discussing Iowa basketball and why the fanbase's apathy is at an all-time low. The question of whether this will be Fran's last year is starting to heat up. Next, Collin reacts to the news from a few weeks back that MG will be out all spring for surgery to repair his shoulder. Also, get into our latest transfer portal commit, as Sam Phillips out of Chattanooga commits to the Hawks. This is a much-needed WR that Tim Lester can work with. Finally, for a little fun, Collin looks back at all the quarterbacks who committed to Iowa since 2017 and eventually transferred out. We look at what schools they transferred to and their stats at the new school. It's a horrible, almost decade-long period of inept recruiting and development. Hopefully, Tim Lester can change that narrative! 0:00 Intro 1:15 Apathy has kicked in for Iowa Men's Basketball 7:24 Mark Gronwoski out for Spring Ball 11:15 WR portal commit - impact? 13:19 The WR room heading into 2025 14:28 QB Room since 2017 20:12 Tim Lester revamping the QB Room

Don Patterson made a rare Friday appearance on the Hawk Fanatic radio show and podcast. The former Iowa offensive coordinator under Hayden Fry addressed multiple topics, including Saturday's Big Ten Championship game between Oregon and Penn State. Don also shared his thoughts on the Iowa quarterback situation, and on why he feels offensive coordinator Tim Lester will ultimately succeed in upgrading the quarterback position. In addition to being a member of Hayden Fry's Iowa coaching staff from 1979 to 1998, Don Patterson was also the head coach for Western Illinois from 1999 to 2009. We always look forward to his unique insight.

A coordinator themed press review show as we once again got to hear from Tim Lester, Levar Woods, and Phil Parker. It's BYE week for the Hawks, one they need, and the coaches provided some interesting answers to questions on Tuesday. Does Coach Parker and staff even know why this Defense that returned 8 starters hasn't performed up to potential this year? Is there a Cooper Dejean shaped presence that this years team doesn't have allowing opposing teams to have more confidence and take more chances? Where has Dakin settled in nationally and is there actually any concerns with the Special Teams at this point? Who is actually going to be our QB against Maryland, and beyond. Why should we be so excited about what Tim Lester brings to this off season, and a whole lot more.If you love the show and want to show support, tell your friends! To have a member of the media evaluate Tim Lester's performance as the Iowa offensive coordinator after nine games is one thing. But to have a previous Iowa offensive coordinator do it, in this case Don Patterson, gives the evaluation far more credibility. Patterson made his usual Monday appearance on the Hawk Fanatic radio show and podcast and he had plenty of good things to say about Lester, whose offense is averaging 30.8 points per game this season.

So, that's what it feels like to have fun watching college football?!? This week, the 4DT guys return to discuss a full team, all three phases, four quarter, rude welcoming of new B1G-member, the Washington Huskies. With 40 points scored by the offense, plenty of positives to talk about, including discussions about seven straight scoring drives, comparing RB greats, and analyzing why the Tim Lester seems to be clicking in such a short amount of time (particularly when compared to the struggles faced in 2012). Finally, Brian and Zach turn their attention to the MSU Spartans as the Hawks travel to East Lansing as nearly a touchdown favorite. In todays show we start with an obscure look back at the 2020 season, the Northwestern game in particular, and why that game is a good example of ran/pass ratio that KF wants to avoid. We reference Lester's time at the podium from last week on several topics here including balancing the Offense, how he addresses areas to work on with detail vs KF's shield approach, and more. We get into a conversation about QB misses the last few years and how having Lester at OC/QB coach could turn the tide for recruiting and development. We touch again on how Iowa's offense will look different next season when they have more time to install, and we finish with what we have to see from Iowa this weekend if they want to win the game.If you love the show and want to show support, tell your friends! How many wins can the Hawkeyes get this year on the gridiron? How many will they get? Position group overviews. Biggest question mark is what will the offense do under Tim Lester? Is the offensive line ready to dominate this season? Will the WR step up to make some explosive plays and help extend drives? Is Cade McNamara ready to go? The defense is going to be SOLID in 2024 with so much experience back, including 8 starters.
After yet another abysmal offensive season, Iowa finally cut ties with Brian Ferentz and brought in Tim Lester as their new OC. The Hawkeye D again looks like a behemoth that will dominate the conference. Will their O bring anything to the table this season?
Don Patterson makes his much anticipated 2024 season debut in this Monday morning podcast. The former Iowa offensive coordinator under Hayden Fry, and former Western Illinois head coach, looks back at this past Saturday's Kids Day practice and ahead to Iowa's 2024 season, which will start against Illinois State in the season opener on Aug. 31 at Kinnick Stadium. Don attended the Kids Day practice and shares his thoughts and analysis on the Iowa offense under new offensive coordinator Tim Lester and he breaks down the performance of Iowa quarterbacks Cade McNamara, Brendan Sullivan and Marco Lainez.
The Hawkeyes are in full swing and football is only a few weeks away. Iowa will host its annual media day on Friday, August 9 and its open practice on August 10. Cyclone Media Day, Tim Lester Seems Nice, and Sean's Speech - F H2
The Iowa Hawkeyes lead the Big Ten in returning starters this year, but it's the departure of a staff member that could have the biggest impact on their 2024 season.Long-time offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz fell far short of the point total needed to remain in his position in 2023, and now Tim Lester has taken over the reins of the offense. Will that, and the healthy return of players like QB Cade McNamara and TE Luke Lachey be enough to improve the Hawkeyes enough to make the College Football Playoff?Chad Leistikow of the Des Moines Register joins host Tom Orr to discuss one of the Big Ten's most intriguing teams.
Hawk Central - One on One with Iowa OC Tim Lester
Scott Dochterman, who covers Iowa for the Athletic, will join me tonight and we will discuss the 2024 Iowa Hawkeyes football. Brian Ferenz is gone as the offensive coordinator. Tim Lester has taken over the offense. Will the offense get any better, or will it still be hamstrung by Captain Kirk? Quarterback Cade McNamara returns. Iowa returns 18 returning starters, the most in the Power Four. But one player is missing, Cooper DeJean. Will there be any drop off in the Iowa secondary because of Cooper DeJean? Will there be any drop off in Iowa's offense overall? Can Iowa put an offense together that could get them into the college football playoff or win the Big Ten championship? What about Scott? Was Scott forced to cover Iowa as a young person and now he's stuck there forever or did he make that by choice? If by choice, what appealed to him about Iowa? Get A Shirt! You have about 2 days to get this shirt before it goes away. I have infringed. Get it here. Use discount code 24BUGMUNCHER for 15% off Until the end of July.

It's a jam packed Hawkeye Report podcast to start the week as we wrap up spring football and talk a whole lot about the transfer portal for the Iowa women's basketball team, men's squad, and some football portal talk is picking up. First we start with the biggest news this past week the additon of Lucy Olsen to the Iowa women's basketball team. Iowa needed a point guard and scoring and they got that in Olsen. Kyle Huesmann and Tom Kakert dive into what it means for the Hawkeyes, why she picked Iowa, and the impact it has on the team next season. Does this making Iowa a Top 25 team next season even without Caitlin Clark? Then we dive into Iowa men's basketball and their addition of Drew Thelwell. They needed a veteran point guard and found it. How did the success of Caitlin Clark help with Iowa recruiting Thelwell? What will he bring to the table next season and will he split time with Brock Harding? Fran McCaffery isn't done in the portal. We look at potential big men targets in the portal. We move on to football and the portal. Jacob Bostick left suddenly, which was a surprise to the Iowa coaches. But, they have a potential wide receiver target visiting Tuesday. We look at that player as a prospect. We also discuss if Iowa will be in the market for a quarterback this spring and why they probably need to. Are there other positions they need to look at in the portal and how are they going to get down to 85 scholarship players by August? We finally talk some football and what we saw at the spring game on Saturday. What did we think of Tim Lester's offense? Who were some of the standout players at the practice? How are we feeling about Iowa heading into the summer months? Finally we wrap up talking Iowa baseball. The Hawkeyes swept Rutgers to move to 9-6 in conference play. Have they turned the corner from a pitching perspective? What do we make of the strong start on Sunday from Brody Brecht?
Chad Leistikow and Scott Dochterman preview Iowa's spring football, diving further into Tim Lester's offense, and some key pieces that could enhance the change. It's a jam packed edition of the Hawkeye Report Podcast covering a whole lot of topics. Tom Kakert and Matt Randazzo discuss Iowa spring football. We have met with several of the players on offense and got a look at the Hawkeyes practice on Thursday. What did we learn? Why are so many players on the offensive side of the ball energized by the offense? We discuss some of the players who have impressed this spring and are any of them surprises?. We also look at some of the mechanics of the Tim Lester offense and why it is receiver and tight end friendly and if they are using some RPO this spring. Then we go portalling and discuss how it might impact the Iowa football program. The Hawkeyes are five over the limit. How do they get down to 85? What about Iowa potentially adding a quarterback to the fold this spring? Could it happen and why it won't be the rumored player from Ohio State. Next up it's Iowa men's and women's basketball hunting for help in the transfer portal. Fran McCaffery has a couple of visits set up for guards. We look at the targets and Iowa's chances with them and three big men that the Hawkeyes could be looking to land. Also, we discuss Fran McCaffery saying Tony Perkins could be getting 500K in NIL? Then we wrap up with women's hoops and their portal targets. Can they land a point guard?
Plenty of news this week in the world of the Hawkeyes and we have Iowa football in the news. Tom Kakert and Matt Randazzo open the podcast discussing the biggest news of the week, the sudden departure of Kadyn Proctor from the Hawkeye program after two months following a transfer from Alabama? What happened with Proctor? Why is he leaving? Why you can't point fingers at the Iowa Swarm and how he didn't get any money from the Iowa Swarm general fund given by fans/supports. We then dive into the impact of this decision on the Iowa offensive line. What will the starting lineup look like now that Proctor is no longer penciled in at left tackle? Is there a player or two to watch on the offensive line? We also dive into spring football talk as practice got underway this week in Iowa City. What are the big storylines that fans need to watch this spring? What are we hearing about Tim Lester as Iowa's OC? What should happen at quarterback? Will we see veterans on defense sitting out this spring? Then we talk Iowa hoops. The Hawkeyes beat Kansas State on Tuesday night. What is the NBA potential of Payton Sandfort? Did he raise his stock on Tuesday with his shooting performance? We then take an early look at the game this weekend against Utah. Finally we wrap up men's hoops with news that Dasonte Bowen is transferring and what that means for the future of the roster? Who starts next year? What are Iowa's portal needs. We also talk women's hoops and covering the Iowa City regional this weekend.
With spring football starting up this week in Iowa City it's a great time to catch up with Chuck Long and discuss the offensive side of the ball. We open the show talking to Long about his work as the offensive coordinator for the Arlington Renegades and head coach Bob Stoops in the UFL and starting play in that league later this month. Then we dive into the Hawkeyes and setting up a new offensive under Tim Lester. Long discusses Lester and the advantage of him being an experienced quarterback, along with a guy from the Chicago suburbs. We discuss the process of installing a new offense for the Hawkeyes and what that process is like both in the meeting room and then on the field. We also look at the challenge of putting a new offense in place while expected starting quarterback Cade McNamara is likely sidelined this spring following ACL surgery last fall. How would a coordinator get him up to speed. What should Iowa do with their race to find a backup quarterback this season? Do you give more reps this spring to Marco Lainez? Finally we talk about the new technology coming to college football with direct communication between coordinator and quarterback and the advantages that Iowa will have with Lester calling plays from the booth as opposed to being on the field.
Football talk starts at 19 minutes into the show- That's where we discuss the media availability of Lester, Wallace, and KF. We talk about the info KF let the public in on relative to the OC hiring process, our thoughts about Tim Lester's first time at the podium and what it was like watching him field questions in contrast to what it's been like with Brian at the podium the last few years. We break down Coach Wallace's comments on his opportunities elsewhere and why he ultimately chose to stay in Iowa City, headlined by his promotion. We also discuss the news that Levar Woods took an interview the Buccaneers and how these guys are real people looking to advance in their careers regardless of how in place they feel at Iowa, AND the dynamic between Coach Woods and Wallace as 2 guys you want to keep around for as long as possible.Around that football conversation we talk about the first ever Walkon Golf event that is 100% a GO after years of talking about it, some reactions to the Joe Evans episode, The Super Bowl preview, and a whole lot more!If you love the show and want to show support, tell your friends!
