The Assembly Call IU Basketball Podcast and Postgame Show

Indiana fell to Illinois 71-51 in Champaign in a game that exposed the Hoosiers' ceiling against elite Big Ten competition. After keeping it close for the opening 10 minutes, Illinois pulled away behind their size, depth, and athleticism while Indiana shot just 25% from three-point range and got dominated on the glass (giving up 15 offensive rebounds). Despite Lamar Wilkerson's 21 points and a defensive effort that held Illinois under their season averages, the Hoosiers simply didn't have enough firepower to compete for 40 minutes, dropping to 17-9 overall and 8-7 in Big Ten play.Jerod Morris and Coach Brian Tonsoni (live from State Farm Center) break down the disappointing but revealing loss:How a critical stretch midway through the first half—Conor Enright's bad turnover followed by Tucker DeVries's questionable second foul—triggered a 10-0 Illinois run that Indiana never truly recovered fromWhy Indiana's defensive game plan actually worked (holding Illinois to 71 points, 22% from three) but the math problem broke down when the Hoosiers couldn't hit open shots to capitalizeThe roster depth disparity on full display—Illinois had "more guys who could do more things" while Indiana's bench managed just five points (a Josiah Miles three and two Reed Bailey free throws)Lamar Wilkerson manufacturing 21 points without many clean looks, continuing to prove he's a complete scorer beyond just catch-and-shoot while teammates struggled around himWhat the offensive rebounding massacre (15 for Illinois, 4 for Indiana) reveals about the physical limitations of this roster against elite size and athleticismTayton Conerway's continued absence and regression raising concerns about depth heading into the final stretchWhy this loss shows Indiana's ceiling—good enough to beat peer-level teams but not equipped to compete with Final Four-caliber rosters like Illinois, Michigan, and Michigan State for full gamesPlus, as always: the big moments you might have missed, stats that stood out, and our game ball and hustle award. This episode brought to you by the Back Home Network and Homefield Apparel.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

SwampSwami.com - Sports Commentary and more!

Watching Sunday’s NFL title game has become one of my least favorite major sports events of the year. You must credit the NFL for making fans wait for two full weeks for the season finale to be played.  This brilliant marketing move allows word-of-mouth to spread to the once-per-year viewers who just show-up to watch the commercials and enjoy a party. Those of us season-long football fans are ready to get this final game of the year over with.  The pro football season continues to be stretched out longer and longer.  Rest assured that football season will eventually shrink if demand falls. The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots had exceptional regular seasons with identical 14-3 records.  Unfortunately for Patriots fans, their favorite team’s offense was as cold as the weather back east in Boston last weekend. Seattle toyed with New England throughout the first half like a kitten batting around a ball of yarn.  A 3-0 first quarter Seattle lead became an equally boring 9-0 halftime advantage for the Seahawks. Sunday’s third quarter likely put many to sleep.  Seattle’s kicker Jason Myers added his fourth field goal of the game. Wowee!   It was 12-0 heading into the final 15 minutes of the NFL season. At least New England punter Bryce Barringer had the chance to say “Hi, Mom!” as he punted an incredible eight times in the first three quarters.  This game was played in perfect weather conditions in Santa Clara, California. Yawn. Some of us tinfoil hat conspiracy theorists put forth that the NFL has exposed a rather interesting “fourth quarter” trend.  Nearly every playoff game played this season had an explosion of points coming in the fourth quarter of play. Why has that been happening? Sunday’s season finale was no exception. This game’s final quarter produced (gasp!) 30 points between these two sleepy combatants.  Seattle was never in jeopardy of losing the lead during the final quarter.  The Seahawks completed a touchdown pass to open-up a 19-0 lead on the hapless Patriots. New England’s passing game finally awakened long enough to produce two late touchdowns after this game was effectively over.  Final score:  Seattle 29, New England 13 Seattle’s “Dark Side Defense” deserved the MVP The Seahawks’ defense appeared to know New England’s offensive playbook as well as the Patriots did.  Blitz after blitz sacked New England’s 23-year old second year quarterback Drake Maye.  He was taken down six times, hurried on nearly every throw, had two interceptions, and lost a critical fumble. Seattle’s defense literally threw the kitchen sink at Drake Maye on Sunday.  They suffocated New England’s running game, too.  The team’s quarterback ran for his life for 37 yards to lead all New England rushers Sunday evening. Seahawks’ running back Kenneth Walker III had a tremendous game with 135 yards on the ground. His backfield dance moves should earn him an invitation to the next season of “Dancing with the Stars”. Walker’s running ability provided some of the only excitement during the first three quarters of this rather boring football game.  Walker received the game’s MVP award.  It’s a shame that the Seattle defense couldn’t receive this award as a group. New England Patriots – Were they simply lucky to have made it this far? Many are pointing out that New England’s 2025 regular season schedule was loaded with weaker teams.  The Patriots played 12 of their 17 regular season games against teams which would post a losing record in 2025. New England finished with a stellar 14-3 record after going 4-13 just a year ago.  The Patriots’ excellent defense carried this team into the NFL title game.  New England allowed just three points (at home vs. the Chargers), 16 points (home vs. the Texans) and only seven at Denver in three playoff games leading up to Sunday’s NFL title game. This year’s group of AFC playoff teams were, being generous, offensively-challenged.  Top-seeded Denver’s defense carried the Broncos all season long.  The Houston Texans had a terrific year – on defense.  Jacksonville’s surprising season was also led by a better-than-expected defense. It didn’t matter which team emerged from the AFC to face Seattle on Sunday.  The Seahawks had a defense capable of clobbering any AFC contender this year and just enough offense to win. That was Seattle’s simple recipe for victory all season long. Is Seattle a dynasty in the making or was this just one great season? Don’t forget that the Los Angeles Rams gave the Seattle Seahawks a run for the NFC West title all year long.  The banged-up San Francisco 49ers also gave the Seahawks and the Rams a run for the money.  All three NFC West competitors made it into the second round of the playoffs. Seattle finished 14-3 in the regular season.  They played just eight teams with losing records this year. The Seahawks’ defense was already considered top notch.  The offense, though, surprised many with an improved performance in 2025. Seattle scored less than 20 points in only three of 20 total games this season. The Seahawks’ eighth-ranked offense developed into a perfect complement to the NFL’s top-rated defense. A number of Seahawks players will want more money to stick around for next season. Assuming they will lose a few to players to free agency, the nucleus of this team is still young and talented. Coach Mike Macdonald’s magic with this team is much like college football’s Indiana Hoosiers under coach Curt Cignetti.  Macdonald’s Seattle Seahawks always seemed better prepared for games than their opponents. Yes, Seattle should be a force in the NFL again next season – assuming that they remain relatively injury free. Sunday’s commercials didn’t move my meter.  How about you? The commercials for Sunday’s game ran $8 million per 30-second ad.  I challenge you to point to one specific commercial which will move you to purchase that company’s product this week. A national newspaper just published its annual ranking of these expensive ads. The beer commercial featuring a horse saving a baby bird (which turned out to be an American eagle) flew into the top spot.  Will it sell any more beer this week or simply convince 100 million people that this particular beer maker is more patriotic than its competitors? A potato chip maker’s tearjerker ad showing an aging farmer handing over the keys of his farm equipment to his daughter captured second place.  It was a very nice spot, but I doubt millions will drop an extra bag of the company’s $5 potato chips into their grocery cart this week. The bronze medal winner featured an iconic polar bear (long representing the top cola maker) coming to grips that his major competitor’s new sugar-free cola actually tastes better.  Will millions now check-out the taste of the polar bear’s new favorite soft drink?  Doubtful. I wanted to like the Neil Diamond imitator singing a knock-off of “Sweet Caroline” as he sprayed mayo onto sandwiches inside of a cafe.  The commercial’s ending was just a bit weird. My “creepy-but-effective” commercials award went to an AI developer.  Their commercials all began with a person asking AI for advice.  A computer generated character then provided a cringy answer and suddenly morphed into an unexpected product sales pitch.  Effective, but who’s buying their product? My thoughts on the 30-minute halftime show?  I haven’t watched it in decades Did you know that the NFL’s “big game” primarily featured college marching bands beginning in 1967 for ten years until mid-1970’s?  A wholesome singing group known as “Up with People” was featured five times over the next ten years as the primary halftime entertainment. Even us younger viewers (at the time) cringed. The year 1991 brought “New Kids on the Block” as the first pop-oriented group performing at halftime.  Michael Jackson’s 1993 appearance officially solidified the change to one primary performer for future halftime shows.  Major popular artists like Diana Ross, Aerosmith, Paul McCartney, and the Rolling Stones would appear over the next ten years. The last 20 years has produced younger artists to help attract that demographic to the annual football extravaganza. This year’s halftime show featured a polarizing performer who became the first to sing a halftime show entirely in Spanish.  Many liked the show.  Some didn’t and changed the channel. I didn’t watch the halftime show (as usual) in order to grab a snack and check my email. Happy trails to you, football! Adios to college and pro football for another season.  The Indiana Hoosiers and Seattle Seahawks were deserving champions this year. Though some of us will be tempted to watch a game or two of spring football in a few months, America’s most popular sport needs to hibernate until next fall. Less truly is best. The Assembly Call IU Basketball Podcast and Postgame Show

Indiana demolished Oregon 92-74 behind Lamar Wilkerson's nuclear 41-point performance at Assembly Hall, moving to 17-8 overall and 8-6 in Big Ten play. After missing his first five shots and not scoring until seven minutes remained in the first half, Wilkerson erupted for 16 points to close the opening period and then added 25 in a second half where Indiana shot an absurd 81% from the field, finishing with a 1.8 points-per-possession output that erased any doubt about the final outcome.Andy Bottoms, Ryan Phillips, and Coach Bob Moats break down the offensive clinic and what it means moving forward:How Wilkerson became just the fifth Indiana player since George McGinnis to record multiple 40-point games in a season, now leading the Big Ten in conference scoring at 24.4 points per gameSam Alexis's continued emergence with another perfect shooting night (8-of-8) and dominant defensive performance against Nate Biddle, opening up the offense early when shots weren't fallingWhy Indiana's second-half offensive explosion (11-of-11 on two-pointers, missing only four total field goals) showcased the full potential of Darian DeVries's system against overmatched opponentsConor Enright's steady excellence as a floor general (eight assists, six rebounds, plus-22 in 36 minutes) proving he's far exceeded expectations as a Big 10 starting point guardThe defensive lapses in the second half that allowed 1.42 points per possession—something that could prove costly against Illinois's top-ranked offense in six daysNick Dorn's confidence-restoring second half after struggling while battling illness, hitting clutch threes and free throws when Indiana needed scoring balanceWhat this five-of-six stretch says about coaching development and veteran play compared to earlier season strugglesPlus, as always: the big moments you might have missed, stats that stood out, and our game ball and hustle award. This episode brought to you by the Back Home Network and Homefield Apparel.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Assembly Call IU Basketball Podcast and Postgame Show

Indiana survived a nail-biting overtime thriller against Wisconsin, winning 78-77 after blowing a 14-point first-half lead and trailing by four with under a minute left in regulation. Lamar Wilkerson, appearing to battle through injury late, scored Indiana's final 10 points of regulation including a clutch layup with under three seconds to force overtime, then became the only Hoosier to score in the extra period as Indiana improved to 16-8 overall and 7-6 in Big Ten play with a crucial victory over a tournament-caliber opponent.Andy Bottoms, Coach Brian Tonsoni (live from Assembly Hall), and Coach Bob Moats break down the gutsy win and questionable finish:How Sam Alexis dominated with 19 points on 9-of-10 shooting and five blocks, proving Indiana can win when the three-point shot isn't falling (just 5-of-22 from deep) by attacking inside for 44 paint pointsThe defensive game plan that held Wisconsin to 38% shooting and forced their offense into uncomfortable spots, including varied ball screen coverages tailored to different shootersWhy Indiana's late-game execution remains a glaring weakness—giving up an 11-point lead in the final four minutes with stagnant offense and defensive breakdowns before Wilkerson's heroicsConnor Enright's massive charge call in overtime when everyone was screaming for Indiana to foul, putting officials in position to make the game-deciding callThe controversial finish including the non-travel call on Alexis and the foul on Wilkerson's game-winner that sent Greg Gard into a meltdownTucker DeVries playing all 45 minutes doing everything but scoring in bunches, plus Josiah Miles's critical defensive minutes when Nick Dorn struggledWhat this win means for Indiana's tournament resume—picking up a quality home win over a team on the same seed line while showing the resilience to close out tight gamesPlus, as always: the big moments you might have missed, stats that stood out, and our game ball and hustle award. This episode brought to you by the Back Home Network and Homefield Apparel.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Bob Moats and Mike Wiemuth welcome Galen Clavio to dive deep into whether Curt Cignetti's hire represents the greatest turnaround in college football history, explore what the numbers actually say, and discuss how a basketball school winning a football national championship changes everything.Still Processing the ImpossibleThe trio opens by admitting they're all still struggling to process what just happened—and it's not just IU fans. Galen notes the rest of college football can't wrap their heads around it either, with people still joking online like "imagine if Indiana was good enough to win a national title—oh wait." They discuss how Cignetti created belief in the fan base through a steady boil rather than a flash fry, and how by the Ohio State game, IU fans had crossed the threshold from "I can't believe we're here" to "I can't wait to kick their butts."The Basketball SituationBefore diving into football greatness, the conversation detours into IU basketball's current state. Galen questions why IU continues struggling to recruit the athletic players that Texas Tech, Alabama, and other programs seem to land consistently—a problem that's plagued multiple coaches. Bob notes the team lacks identity and feels mercurial, though the Purdue win showed what's possible when everything clicks. Mike explains this was always a "proof of concept" roster with a fixed ceiling, and the portal additions next year should stabilize things.Quantifying GreatnessMike breaks out the data comparing Cignetti to legendary coaches:Only five coaches in history won 90%+ of games in their first two years—Barry Switzer, Larry Coker, Ryan Day, Urban Meyer, and Terry BowdenAll of them inherited rosters loaded with NFL players (Coker inherited 34 future NFL players at Miami, including 13 Pro Bowlers)Cignetti inherited maybe a handful at best, then had to build through the portal on a condensed timelineWhen comparing first championship timelines, only Urban Meyer matched Cignetti's two-year mark among modern coachesThe kicker: Cignetti's 61-point variance above IU's 50-year baseline (32% to 93%) has never been done before—not even closeThe Bill Snyder ComparisonMike reveals the closest historical comparison is Bill Snyder at Kansas State, widely considered one of the greatest turnaround artists ever. But even Snyder started 6-16 in his first two years before building to sustained success. The difference? Snyder's best Kansas State teams (like the 11-1 squad in 1998) still fell short in championship moments. Cignetti didn't just match the journey—he completed it by winning the whole thing in year two.The Basketball School ParadoxBob introduces the revelation that IU is the first basketball blue blood to win a football national championship. Not Kentucky, not North Carolina, not Kansas—Indiana. Galen explores what this means for redefining IU's identity, noting that if you asked every 60-year-old alum at Power Five schools to stand if they've seen their team win both a football and basketball title, only three would stand: IU, Florida, and Michigan. The conversation turns philosophical about whether IU can maintain elite football success while not choking off oxygen for basketball and other sports—a question no basketball school has ever had to answer before. The Providence FactorMike emphasizes to IU fans: this is not normal. Most fan bases never see their team win a national championship in their lifetime, and many programs' titles came before their current fans were born. The group discusses how IU's championship breaks all the meters for measuring greatness, with Galen noting there's an open debate about whether this was the greatest college football team of all time—a sentence that would have seemed like satire just two years ago. This episode brought to you by the Back Home Network and Home Field Apparel.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Indiana fell to USC 81-75 in Los Angeles, closing out a grueling West Coast road trip with a flat performance two days after their emotional double-overtime victory over UCLA. Despite battling back from an 11-point second-half deficit to have a chance late, the Hoosiers shot just 28.6% from three-point range and got only 11 combined points from Nick Dorn and Tucker DeVries as physical and mental fatigue seemed to catch up with them. The loss drops Indiana to 15-8 overall and 6-6 in Big Ten play.Jerod Morris and Ryan Phillips break down the disappointing but somewhat expected letdown:Lamar Wilkerson's heroic 33-point performance carrying Indiana offensively when no other Hoosier reached double figures, continuing his remarkable stretch that's put him squarely in first-team All-Big Ten considerationWhy the shooting struggles (Dorn 2-of-12 from three, DeVries 1-of-9 from the field) were symptoms of tired legs after playing deep into double overtime Saturday—flat shots rattling halfway down and out instead of droppingThe critical moments when Indiana needed to adjust away from settling for perimeter shots against USC's length and shot-blocking (11th nationally in block percentage) but continued forcing threesHow USC's Alijah Arenas made the plays of the game, hitting key shots to turn momentum when Indiana cut the deficit to four in the second halfTayton Conerway's return to action showing encouraging burst and driving ability in 10 minutes, raising questions about the optimal starting lineup moving forward with Dorn playing so wellWhy this loss stings less than most of Indiana's eight defeats this year—the mentality shift in this program where they fight for 40 minutes even without their A-gameThe all-important homestand ahead against Wisconsin and Oregon that will determine whether this road trip represents progress or a missed opportunityPlus, as always: the big moments you might have missed, stats that stood out, and our game ball and hustle award. This episode brought to you by the Back Home Network and Homefield Apparel.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Season 7, Episode 21 of Sports Fellowship with Fox and Frank opens in the middle of a true Pennsylvania deep freeze, as Dan Fox and Frank Knight battle sub-zero wind chills, bomb-cyclone warnings, and the kind of winter that hasn't hit this hard in years. With Alan “Action” Jackson sitting this one out (and very vocal about needing time before discussing Bill Belichick and Eli Manning without cussing), the guys set the tone with cold-weather banter before locking in The Deion Sanders Episode. The show kicks off by correcting an omission from last week: congratulations to the Indiana Hoosiers, who capped a historic season by going 16–0 and winning the College Football National Championship—becoming the first undefeated champion in the playoff era. Dan and Frank discuss the fun, drama, and inevitability of complaints in a 12-team playoff format, agreeing that whining has no place when that many teams get a shot. From there, the conversation shifts into one of the most polarizing topics in sports right now: the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The guys break down why Bill Belichick not getting in immediately is indefensible, regardless of how the voting process works, while also debating Eli Manning's Hall of Fame case—agreeing he'll get in eventually, but questioning first-ballot status. Along the way, they touch on other notable names stuck in the logjam, what it really means to “change the game,” and why you simply cannot tell the story of the NFL without Belichick. The episode then pivots to speculation and prediction, with Dan floating a bold take: Bill Belichick's next NFL stop could be the New York Jets. The guys debate ownership, timing, legacy, and whether a 70-something Belichick would even want to walk back into another organizational tire fire. The back half of the show dives deep into Major League Baseball's offseason stalemate. Dan lays out the staggering payroll disparities—Mets and Dodgers north of $320 million, while teams like the Marlins, Rays, and Athletics sit under $80 million—and explains how luxury tax payments alone can rival full team payrolls. The Dodgers' massive financial advantages, deferred contracts, international media revenue, and opt-outs from revenue sharing spark a blunt conversation about competitive balance, small-market accountability, and whether a salary cap (or at least a soft cap) is inevitable. The discussion widens into labor tensions, the looming threat of another MLB work stoppage, and the long-term damage done by the 1994 strike. Steroids, the home run boom, fan trust, and Hall of Fame hypocrisy all come back into focus, with Dan and Frank agreeing on one thing above all else: neither side truly prioritizes the fans, despite claiming they do.The episode wraps with a lighter note—broadcast booths, Mets vs. Phillies coverage, baseball fandom vs. team loyalty—and a reminder that this podcast is still being recorded deep in Dan's basement “bomb shelter,” courtesy of ongoing renovations.Special Thanks to:Fox Brothers Alarms - https://foxbrothersalarms.comFirst Baptist church of Phillipsburg NJ http://www.fbcpburg.org/

Indiana defeated Purdue 72-67 at Assembly Hall to earn Darian DeVries his first signature victory as Indiana's head coach and secure a crucial quad-one win for the Hoosiers' NCAA tournament resume. With the national championship football team honored before the game, Indiana jumped out to an 11-point halftime lead behind balanced scoring and relentless defense on Braden Smith, then survived a second-half offensive drought and several missed free throws to hold off Purdue's late charge and improve to 14-7 overall and 5-5 in Big Ten play.Jerod Morris, Andy Bottoms, Ryan Phillips, and Bob Moats break down the massive victory and what it means for the program:Connor Enright's 40-minute defensive masterpiece on Braden Smith (holding the All-American to 14 points on 14 shots with five assists and four turnovers) and his ice-cold three-pointer at 65-63 that ended a crucial offensive droughtHow Indiana won the first half with physicality, defensive intensity, and a 21-6 run over the final eight minutes featuring clutch buckets from Reed Bailey, Lamar Wilkerson, Tucker DeVries, and Josiah MilesNick Dorn's breakout continued with 18 points including eight straight in a critical second-half stretch, plus key drives that showed he's more than just a shooterWhy Indiana's ability to avoid fouling (only 15 team fouls, nobody with more than three) while forcing Purdue into 10 turnovers was the defensive blueprint they've needed all seasonThe second-half offensive struggles when Indiana went too conservative too early, missing three front-ends of one-and-ones while trying to run clock with five minutes leftWhat this win means for the program's trajectory—not just making the tournament this year, but showing what DeVries can do with the right roster construction as a strong 2026 recruiting class takes shapeTucker DeVries's toughness leading the game with 10 rebounds despite being held scoreless in the second half, and the critical contributions from role players like Miles, Sicily, and BaileyPlus, as always: the big moments you might have missed, stats that stood out, and our game ball and hustle award. This episode brought to you by the Back Home Network and Homefield Apparel.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
