This edition of The Assembly Call dives into Indiana's complete roster overhaul and what fans might expect heading into the 2025-26 season. After inconsistent results under previous regimes, Indiana basketball is embracing a paradigm shift toward a more modern, movement-oriented system. The conversation highlights DeVries' business-like approach to program building and the significant shift in roster construction.Key discussion points include:The new-look roster featuring primarily mid-major transfers like Lamar Wilkerson and Tucker DeVriesThe team's potential defensive identity with aggressive ball pressure rather than traditional rim protectionReasonable expectations for the upcoming season in a competitive Big TenThe contrasting styles of DeVries vs. Woodson, particularly the shift to a more face-up, perimeter-oriented offenseThe possibility of Luke Goode and Anthony Leal returning with additional eligibility waiversWe speculate about where this roster might fall in the Big Ten pecking order and why Indiana's apparent change in approach and culture is a welcome development.Plus, as always, plenty of basketball analysis, listener questions, and a candid discussion about maintaining realistic expectations while embracing the positive changes within the program. That's all in this edition of The Assembly Call.On the mics: Coach Brian Tonsoni, Ryan Phillips, Bob Moats, and Jerod MorrisSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Indiana Hoosiers have mastered the Transfer Portal two years in a row. Curt Cignetti and his staff found two more gems from the Transfer Portal, and just as importantly, have great news regarding which players did not leave Bloomington.Indiana's roster management is great, and the Hoosiers just added a talented defensive tackle from back East that's discussed on the Portal Podcast. Locked On Hoosiers host Jacob Goins joined the show to give his take on the transfers and the newest IU football commitment. To finalize, we discuss IU's football schedule.Instagram: @fbscout_florida Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-portal-daily-college-recruiting-and-nil-podcast/id1720975375Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2Wr77m5yVBgANHkDS7NxI5YouTube: www.youtube.com/@ThePortalPodcast#ThePortalPodcast #LockedOnThePortal #transferportal #transfernews #recruiting #nil #recruitingrankings #TransferPortalTampering #IndianaFootball #IndianaHoosiersSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Supply HouseJoin the Trade Master program today at SupplyHouse.com/TM and start ordering plumbing, HVAC, and electrical supplies with just a few clicks. “Bobby Wilkerson was the most valuable player I ever coached." - Bob KnightAs if you needed anything more than that, consider this... during Bobby Wilkerson's career, Indiana was 86-6 overall and 48-2 in the Big Ten. He was a member of Big Ten championship teams in 1974, 1975 and 1976. He was instrumental in the IU victory over the gold medal Russian National squad, considered the best team in the world. He was a freak athlete, do-it-all shut down defender who started on the undefeated 1976 NCAA championship team.Bobby Wilkerson is, quite simply, one of the greatest Indiana Hoosiers of all time.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Bob and Mike welcome Andy Bottoms from The Assembly Call to discuss the evolving world of bracketology and what the 2025 NCAA Tournament reveals about the future of college basketball. This episode offers an insider's perspective on how bracketologists approach their craft, the metrics that matter most to the selection committee, and why the drama of bubble teams captures the public's imagination in ways similar to reality television. The conversation explores how conference realignment has fundamentally altered tournament selection, creating a widening gap between power conferences and mid-majors.Segment 1: The Rise of Bracketology as a Cultural PhenomenonAndy explains that bracketology has exploded in popularity partly because the selection process has become more data-driven and terminology has worked its way into mainstream broadcasts (7:00)Mike theorizes bracketology taps into the same psychological appeal as reality TV shows – the drama of inclusion and exclusion captures audience attention (19:00)The committee's increasing transparency through regular updates has transformed selection from a one-day event into a season-long narrative (20:30)Andy describes his process, noting the challenge isn't just analyzing metrics but predicting how a committee of 12 people will interpret them (28:00)Segment 2: Power Conference Dominance and Mid-Major DisadvantagesThe 2025 tournament saw all four #1 seeds reach the Final Four, potentially reinforcing the committee's tendency to favor power conference teams (10:00)Andy expresses disappointment with how top mid-majors like Drake were treated on the seed list, noting how close they came to missing the tournament entirely despite outstanding seasons (59:00)Viewership for the 2025 tournament increased dramatically (approximately 20%), creating incentives for the committee to continue favoring matchups between power conference teams (67:00)Discussion of how conference realignment has made it nearly impossible for mid-majors to build nationally competitive programs as their best players get poached through the transfer portal (67:00)Segment 3: Analytics and Future ImplicationsThe committee's use of metrics has evolved, with predictive analytics (like KenPom and Torvik) becoming increasingly influential in tournament selection (36:00)Teams now have to consider margin of victory in early-season games, creating a difficult balance between building their metrics and managing player minutes (42:00)Andy evaluates whether the chalky 2025 tournament was a blip or trend, suggesting mid-major disadvantages will continue while the dominance of #1 seeds might be an aberration (89:00)Debate about tournament expansion concludes that while it might benefit mid-majors, it would likely dilute the competitive quality and drama that makes March Madness special (94:00)The episode provides valuable insight into how the modern selection process works while questioning whether the system is becoming too tilted toward power conferences. As the hosts note, the fundamental challenge remains the same: win games, beat good teams decisively, and build a strong enough resume to impress both the metrics and committee members. On the mics: Bob Moats and Mike Wiemuth with Andy Bottoms (The Assembly Call)See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We sat down with Jassen Yep, the Indiana Hoosier who came into Bloomington with a 1:57 200 breast and recently won an NCAA title in the same event with a 1:48. Yep takes us through his journey at Indiana and how he made the progression from barely recruited (he was not a walk-on, but he did come in with very little scholarship money) to #4 performer all-time in the 200 breast. While Yep planned to retire after NCAAs, this wave of success and enjoyment of his sport has led Jassen to reconsider. The Hoosier will now keep training while he finishes his Master's degree in sociology with US Trials in June in his sights.

Send us a textThe 1980-1981 Indiana Hoosiers basketball team embodied the ultimate underdog story, overcoming significant challenges to claim the NCAA National Championship. Facing early-season injuries to key players like Randy Whitman and Mike Woodson, the team battled through a nine-loss season with remarkable resilience. Led by sophomore sensation Isaiah Thomas, who was named Final Four Most Outstanding Player, and supported by exceptional talents like Ted Kitchell, the Hoosiers peaked at the right moment. Under Bobby Knight's legendary coaching, they secured their second national title in dramatic fashion, defeating North Carolina in a memorable championship game. Episode 29 offers a comprehensive analysis of Mike Woodson's four-year tenure as Indiana University's basketball coach, examining the factors behind his hiring, the challenges he faced, and the broader implications for college basketball coaching searches at traditional powerhouse programs.Hosts Bob Moats and Mike Wiemuth are joined by Josh Burton of Everything College Basketball to discuss how Woodson's departure represents a cautionary tale about bringing NBA coaches without college experience to the collegiate level, while also exploring how the transfer portal era is reshaping basketball programs at all levels.Segment 1: The Challenge of NBA-to-College Coaching TransitionsNBA-to-college coaching transitions have a mixed track record (Penny Hardaway, Juwan Howard, Mike Woodson), with most struggling to adapt to the complexities of the college gameThe college coaching environment requires significantly different skills than the NBA: recruiting, player development, NIL management, and relating to much younger athletesCollege basketball demands systems that maximize less developed players, while NBA coaching often assumes elite talent that can create their own opportunitiesWoodson faced a substantial age gap (often 40+ years) with his players, creating challenges in connecting with and developing young talentThe role of a college coach as GM, recruiter, and developer requires much more multifaceted skills than NBA coaching positionsSegment 2: The Woodson Era's Strategic FailuresWoodson's offensive system remained rooted in outdated basketball philosophy, featuring two traditional bigs clogging the paint rather than adapting to modern spacing conceptsIndiana consistently ranked among the nation's worst in three-point attempt rate (321st, 350th, 351st, and 321st in his four seasons)Several talented guards (Tamar Bates, Kalib Banks, CJ Gunn) transferred away from Indiana and flourished elsewhere in systems that maximized their skillsWoodson's inability to adapt his system to modern basketball led to predictable offensive struggles against teams that employed drop coverage defenseWoodson's reliance on Trayce Jackson-Davis' individual brilliance masked tactical shortcomings early in his tenureSegment 3: Recruiting Challenges and Program DirectionWhile Woodson improved Indiana's recruiting profile compared to the Archie Miller era, he struggled to land elite guards after early success with Jalen Hood-SchifinoWoodson went 0-for-31 on top-100 guard offers after Hood-Schifino committedNotable recruiting misses including Braelon Mullens, Liam McNeely, and Boogie Fland severely limited Indiana's ceilingThe center-focused offensive style likely deterred elite guards from committing to IndianaWoodson's alleged lack of effort in recruitment (reportedly going months without contacting five-star in-state recruit Braelon Mullens) reflected broader questions about his commitment to the modern demands of college coachingSegment 4: Legacy and Lessons for Blue Blood ProgramsWoodson's tenure represents a transitional period that did leave the program in somewhat better shape than he found it (went 2-2 against Purdue after Archie Miller went 0-7)Never had a losing season, made two NCAA tournaments, and raised Indiana's recruiting profileTraditional programs like Indiana must be willing to take bold coaching risks rather than "safe" options to return to elite statusThe transfer portal era makes program rebuilding potentially faster but requires coaches who fully embrace modern basketball philosophy and recruitingIndiana and other blue blood programs risk continued decline and fan apathy if they don't adapt to the changing landscape of college basketballThis episode provides a thoughtful examination of how the transition from NBA to college coaching often fails due to fundamental differences in the required skill sets and approaches. The discussion highlights how college basketball's evolution demands coaches who can adapt to modern offensive principles, navigate the transfer portal era effectively, and fully commit to the demanding schedule of recruiting. The conversation serves as a valuable case study for athletic directors and programs considering similar hires, emphasizing the importance of selecting coaches with a deep understanding of the college game's unique dynamics rather than relying solely on professional pedigree or alumni connections.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This episode of The Assembly Call dives deep into IU's new basketball coach, Darian DeVries, analyzing his coaching philosophy and what fans can expect from this fresh start. We discuss the current roster changes with players entering the transfer portal and DeVries' approach to building his team. Throughout the conversation, we examine his coaching style, offensive and defensive strategies, and what this new era means for Indiana basketball.Among the topics discussed:- The mass exodus (for real this time!) of players to the transfer portal and why fans shouldn't panic about the rebuild under DeVries (10:45)- DeVries' philosophy on unselfish basketball and making "the one more pass" offers insights into his offensive approach that differs from previous coaches (36:00)- DeVries' track record of adapting to player personnel, highlighting his success at Drake and West Virginia despite injuries (42:00)- Jerod finally shows up to participate in an extensive discussion about the relationship between IU fans and the program, and how DeVries *might* be the coach to restore trust and enthusiasm (1:23:00)- Ryan returns to emphasize why hiring a true "college basketball guy" instead of an NBA coach is exactly what Indiana needed (1:53:00)Ultimately, the discussion centers around the reality that while results will ultimately determine DeVries' success, his coaching philosophy, basketball knowledge, and approach to team-building give IU fans legitimate reasons for optimism after years of disappointment. On the mics: Coach Tonsoni, Ryan Phillips, Andy Bottoms, and Jerod MorrisSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

(00:00) Golf, March Madness, and Match Play This chapter kicks off with a lively discussion about March Madness, with hopes and bets on whether the Indiana Hoosiers will make it past the bubble stage. There's some light-hearted banter about the need for better coaching and players for Indiana, reminiscing about their past glory days. The conversation then shifts to a humorous anecdote from the Approach Shot podcast featuring Michael Floyd, a former NFL player, who claims to hit his driver 400 yards. We explore the intricacies of such claims, touching on the challenges of controlling high-speed drives and the importance of precise club face positioning. Additionally, the chapter briefly mentions the specialized equipment used in long drive competitions, highlighting how they are designed to minimize spin for maximum distance. (13:06) Mental Strategy in Match Play Golf This chapter explores the psychological strategies employed in match play golf, emphasizing the importance of playing the opponent rather than just the course. We discuss various tactics such as creating pressure by not conceding putts, leveraging the advantage of being the first to reach the green, and using the mental state of the opponent to one's benefit. The conversation touches on the subtle art of maintaining a mental edge through seemingly simple actions, like practicing a putt after it's been conceded, to build confidence and unsettle the opponent. Additionally, we highlight the balance between mental games and pure skill, ultimately asserting that good golf skills are irreplaceable. This insightful discussion offers a glimpse into the mind games that complement the physical aspect of golf, with an understanding that both play crucial roles in winning matches. (21:45) The Beauty of Match Play Golf This chapter explores the engaging and competitive world of match play golf, emphasizing its unique appeal, especially during adverse weather conditions where winning a hole is all that matters. We discuss the prominence of match play in the Ryder Cup and its commonality in Europe, where four-ball matches are the norm, and how playing with uneven groups can be challenging. The conversation also touches on cultural experiences, such as playing golf in Scotland, and highlights the enjoyment of adapting to the local customs, including forming a "four ball" and joining other players for a round. Alongside the golf discussion, there's a light-hearted reflection on the host's relocation to Indian Wells, California, the diverse community there, and a nostalgic mention of attending a Styx concert, contrasting the youthful vibe of the Coachella music festival. (34:43) Navigating the Challenges of Alternate Shot This chapter takes us through the dynamics and challenges of playing alternate shot format in golf, highlighting the importance of camaraderie and mutual understanding between partners. We explore the mental pressures unique to this format, emphasizing the added emotional burden of playing not just for oneself, but also to avoid disappointing a partner. The conversation touches on how golf is as much a mental game as it is physical, often bringing about emotional responses, particularly in high-stakes settings like junior tournaments. We discuss the importance of focusing on personal achievements rather than solely on competitive outcomes, acknowledging that individual progress can be overshadowed by the broader competitive context. Additionally, we reflect on the intricacies of golf handicaps and the potential misunderstandings they can create, underscoring the need for a balanced perspective on personal performance in the sport. (44:05) Exploring Match Play Golf Variations This chapter focuses on the exciting ways to enhance your golf experience through different game formats. We explore the benefits of incorporating match play into your routine, emphasizing how it encourages strategic thinking and personal growth. Additionally, we discuss the intriguing concept of playing worst ball, where you tackle challenges by playing your least favorable shots. By alternating between worst ball and best ball on different holes, you can create a dynamic and engaging game, almost like a personal scramble. These variations promise to bring fun and improvement to your golf outings.
