We all need a break sometimes - but we can also exaggerate what that break looks like. We often fantasize of going away for months on end, leaving the stressors of our minds eye alone as we drift onto an abandoned beach in the middle of the tropics. A lot of the time, though, we don't need to travel thousands of miles to really "get a break". We can get a break just by closing our eyes, taking some deep breaths, and refocusing ourselves. To be caring towards others is an exponentially admirable quality. Our loved ones being able to depend on us when they are down or they need someone to be there for them only strengthens the bond and the love we share for each other. But what happens when we care so much for others, that we let our own health and well-being falter? It is like when you are in an airplane, just before takeoff, and the flight attendants and pilots go over safety procedures in case of an emergency. They make sure to repeat, over and over again, that it is imperative that, in the event of an emergency, you take care of yourself first, and then your loved ones. That oxygen mask must go on you first, before you can help your child / others around you. The reasoning for this is we cannot help others if we ourselves are struggling. So often we go through our day, not recognizing or noticing how we feel, physically, mentally, or emotionally. There are very few messages as powerful as the pain message in your brain. Pain is a sign of necrosis, of something going really wrong inside of your body. When that penetrating alarm goes off – it is primed to get your attention very quickly. But many times the pain can be much worse than what it is trying to warn us about. Frequently the pain becomes the issue in itself. However – Despite the fact that pain is such a prominent message, it is not one that has to control your life. In fact, the more you create in your mind pathways, breaking through that pain and use your brain to restructure the message of darkness into light, the greater capacity you have of transcending pain. This meditation will create a pathway through pain. Even if you do not presently suffer from any particular discomfort, it is a great thing to learn in case for when you might run into that occasional ache or pain.
