Kids Kicking Cancer's work is vital in supporting families navigating the complexities of chronic illness.  KKC empowers children with chronic illnesses and their families through the power of martial arts and breathwork. Founder and International Director Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg “Rabbi G” shares his deeply personal story that led to the creation of Kids Kicking Cancer and the organization's remarkable growth from 10 children in 1 facility to over 126 facilities across 10 countries.Rabbi G, alongside Global Program Director Cindy Cohe, explains the organization's distinctive method - using therapeutic martial arts techniques to assist children in handling pain and stress. KKC also promotes a sense of purpose, peace, and community. Kids Kicking Cancer values the family unit as a whole, offering support not only to the child in treatment but also to siblings, parents, and other caregivers. We discuss the difficulties faced by caregiving youth and stress the significance of establishing a supportive network for these often-overlooked individuals. They go on to share about The Heroes Circle Pediatric Healing Program, which teaches martial arts meditation, non-contact movement, and breathing techniques designed to empower children to take control of the pain and stress of their illness. Their evidence-based program is taught in-person and virtually by black belt Therapeutic Martial Arts Instructors and is provided to families at no cost. Children 3 years and older with ANY pediatric illness, and their siblings, are eligible for the program.  Social Media: Website: https://heroescircle.org/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kidskickingcancer Instagram: @kidskickcancerLinked In: https://www.linkedin.com/company/kids-kicking-cancerTwitter: x.com/kidskickcancerYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/KidsKickingCancerBooks/E-Book/Resource: https://a.co/d/0bs6YgyGSupport the Show.Confessions of a Reluctant Caregiver Sisterhood of Care, LLC Website: www.confessionsofareluctantcaregiver.com Like us on Facebook! Each and every one of us has experienced challenges that are unfair, and seemingly insurmountable, sometimes leaving us to question the purpose that this pain is playing in our lives. We may ask, "why me?", feeling defeated by our tribulations, looking for a way out of the darkness. The children of Kids Kicking Cancer have a bit of a different idea. We sat down with Rabbi Elimelech Goldburg, "Rabbi G", (https://kidskickingcancer.org/) a black belt Rabbi and founder of Kicks Kicking Cancer, to hear about how children experiencing pediatric illness and cancer are our true teachers. It is truly an inspiration to listen to Rabbi G describe how the children with the toughest feats face them with a smile on their face, and literally, a breath of fresh air. Dr. Hilary Marusak is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, Wayne State University School of Medicine and directs the THINK lab (www.wsuthinklab.com) . She is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute for Child and Family Development, a Scientific Member of the Karmanos Cancer Institute and the CURES Center, and a Science Advisor for the nonprofit organization Kids Kicking Cancer. She hosts her own podcast about the brain and brain disorders, called BrainSTEM (www.brainstempodcast.com).   In this episode, Dr. Hilary Marusak and I discuss some of the latest neuroscientific research on how meditation affects various brain systems. Meditation has been used by humans for thousands of years as a tool for self-regulation, healing, strengthening, and resilience development. And recently, the modern scientific community has begun to investigate how meditation works, which brain systems are involved, and how it can be used therapeutically. The practice of meditation comes in many different forms, and can be applied to many different areas of a person's life. Hilary's research focuses primarily on how meditation affects kids, and how it can be used as a therapeutic tool for kids who are dealing with pain, illness, and emotional dysregulation.    We also discuss some of the latest science of cannabis and how the scientific community are working towards gaining a better understanding of the relationship and interaction between cannabis and the endocannabinoid system. Just as meditation has been used by humans for thousands of years, so too has cannabis played a role in many healing traditions in human history. The exact nature of how cannabis affects the body and brain is still largely unstudied and is an exciting field of research. While using cannabis for medicinal purposes has started to rise in society (with the recent legalization), there are also some risks. As the body of scientific literature develops over time, our ability to make educated and informed decisions regarding cannabis use will also increase. Hilary and I also explore some of her research into how cannabis affects the developing brain (i.e. in fetuses, children, and teenagers). While these areas of study are still relatively new, it's an exciting time to be in this field and studying the potential benefits and risks of cannabis.  More of Hilary:  BrainSTEM Podcast: http://www.brainstempodcast.com Hilary's Research: http://www.wsuthinklab.com    More of Shane:  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shane-pokroy/  Instagram: https://instagram.com/shanepokroy/  Facebook: https://facebook.com/UndergroundAnticsPodcast/  Listen to Underground Antics on your favourite podcast platform

Many people harbor a misconception that meditation has its singular roots in the world of Eastern Spirituality. In fact, the tenets of meditation is present as early as in The Bible. It doesn't require a lotus position or strange mantras. It's actually a recognition that there are two paths which travel through our brain. Each path has its own voice. One voice is the sound of the body- it can be loud, disruptive, angry, overwhelmingly sad, frustrated or jealous. It's a voice driven by the chemicals of our brain that pump stress through our body exactly as we see it happen to the animals of the jungle. Because stress is a sign of necrosis or dying tissue, it really gets our attention. Stress occupies a prominent space and can, without even trying swirl our thoughts in a kaleidoscope of darkness that drowns out focus and light. The other voice is the sounds of your soul. It is calm, powerful, and can be filled with an amazing light. The goal of all of the meditations that the little teachers of Kids Kicking Cancer use is to quiet the noise of the body- To create a light that can overcome the inner darkness of pain, fear, anger, stress- When you will feel this light you will find the sound of your soul. In the Bible, the Hebrew word for the soul is neshama, it is from the the word neshima, or breath. The pathway to the soul can be found by learning how to use your breath to quiet the noise of the body. In the thirty meditations that we will learn together over the coming weeks with Rabbi G, you will discover the power of your neshama, the light of your soul. Each meditation will build upon the other, using similar phrases and tools allowing your mind to grow from one experience to the next, building an inner platform for the voice of your soul. What will make this exercise different from any other meditation in the world, is as you gain access to your inner light, you will be allowing the children of Kids Kicking Cancer to know that you are learning from them. When you give them purpose, they have less pain. Every time you listen to these meditations, it lets them know, immediately, that they are teaching the world. We call that Power – Peace – Purpose Let us begin together and take the next three minutes to begin this journey to find the power of the soul. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/heroes-circle/support

A CNN HERO Rabbi G began a non profit organization, Kids Kicking Cancer, after watching his very young daughter die of cancer over 30 years ago.  Rather than fall into a hole of despair, Rabbi G decided to channel his grief toward helping other children and their families.   His powerful mantra- POWER PEACE PURPOSE and the term he coined and trademarked BREATH BRAKE really speaks volumes for children with cancer.  Rabbi G has taken his program globally and you can find him in remote parts of Africa and in small villages in Asia helping children to regain their power in the face of their illness.  Very remarkably, Rabbi G has been able to use his powerful techniques for children and adults everywhere with and without illness and he has been invited to teach his program to corporate executives both in the U.S. as well as across the globe.  Empowering parents and their children to regain their sense of self and empower them after trauma and illness has shown children everywhere that these techniques really DO work.   Children can feel helpless and disempowered many times during the course of their daily activities in the classroom, in the playground and even in the home.  Rabbi G is bringing his program to schools everywhere so that ALL children can reap the benefits.  You don't want to miss our conversation and you will be laughing and crying during this poignant interview. Visit Atara at Curlee GirleeVisit Grace at The Baby Spot

ABOUT THIS EPISODE Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg was a young father when he received the call every parent dreads. His toddler daughter passed away a short time later. Years later, he found a profound way to channel his grief by directing Camp Simcha, a camp for children with cancer. In that role, he discovered that the marriage between martial arts and ailing children could be a transformational one, thus beginning the Kids Kicking Cancer revolution. Today deployed in dozens of locations around the world, the program - instructing people to "breathe in the light and breathe out the darkness" - has also been applied to military veterans suffering from PTSD, obese children and those with various other maladies. And in a unique but critical twist, the children come to see themselves as teachers and heroes, lighting up with the world as they practice the program principles and impart them to others. "Rabbi G" has poured his life into this fascinating mission, which continues to grow in many directions.
