Episode 362: On the morning of May 29, 2010, gunshots shattered the quiet of a rural property just outside Cranbrook, British Columbia. By the time police arrived at the scene, two lives had been tragically cut short in an apparent case of mistaken identity. The victims were Jeffrey Todd Taylor, 42, and Leanne Laura MacFarlane, 43, a couple who had been renting half of a duplex on a large piece of land for about three months. They had no connection to the criminal underworld and appeared to have been innocent victims caught in the crossfire of a drug gang dispute. Over the last 15 years, authorities and the couple's family and friends have fought to bring their killers to justice. This is a throwback episode with Brian Hales from 2017. Brian is the author of Joseph Smith's Polygamy, Volumes 1-3, and it's just in time for the Journal of Mormon Polygamy Conference this weekend at the University of Utah. Check out our conversation.... https://youtu.be/WVs0ypGKq5o Copyright © 2025 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Except for book reviews, no content may be reproduced without written permission Canadian Polygamy – Should it be Legal? The Interview GT: Well I'd like to welcome everybody out here to Gospel Tangents Podcast. I'm really excited to talk to Dr. Brian Hales. He's the expert on polygamy, or one of the experts I guess. I'm grateful to have you here and thank you for letting me take some of your time today. Brian: Rick it's really a privilege for me to be here. GT: Well thanks. One of the things I'd like to do is to introduce you to my audience a little bit. Typically I try to talk to a lot of historians who are doctors but you are the first physician, although I have talked to a physician's assistant as well. Could you tell us a little bit about your background, even in medicine? I think you're a Utah man. Is that right? Brian: I am actually. I went to Utah State, grew up in Logan and got a medical degree from University of Utah, so I have a little bit of the Ute blood in me as well. GT: Aggie and Utah, ok. Brian: Aggies primarily. Then I had a member of my family who was involved with Mormon fundamentalism and that kind of steered me over into thinking about polygamy. This is back in 1989 so it's been quite some time ago. At that point I was in a residency for anesthesia and I do tell people that my books are part of my full anesthesia services. You've probably heard me say that joke, but I got interested then in Mormon fundamentalism and published a book, co-authored a book in 1991 dealing with that topic but then later a couple of other books. People were asking me about Joseph Smith's polygamy, and I didn't have answers and really I would argue none of the books did. Todd Compton's book has some things that were very helpful but he had written biographies and it wasn't focused specifically on Joseph, so there was still a lot of room for research and to also try to figure out some of the historical aspects that really were just big question marks I think in a lot of people's minds. So in 2006-2007 I hired Don Bradley who is a dear friend but also a remarkable researcher and he went out and did a lot of research for me, gathered documents, and I told him to get everything: anti-Mormon or supportive, whatever he could find. We wanted to get every known document, and it was interesting because after we had been going about six months, it became obvious that if we kept going, eventually we would be able to put either a transcript or at least a reference to every known document on polygamy within the volumes that we were putting together. So we got kind of excited about that but that was mostly Don Bradley's work. But his help, I put together three volumes (vol 1, vol 2, vol 3) on polygamy. There's been a few new things come out. This was in 2013 that they were published, but not a lot has come out but a few very important things that we can talk about. GT: Yeah we'll definitely want to talk about that. Well great! I'm glad you talked about how you got interested in fundamentalist Mormonism, I guess. There are different branches. Could you just kind of briefly give a sketch of the main ones? I guess we've got the FLDS, AUB. Are there any others? Could you give a background on Mormon fundamentalism? Brian: Well do you mind if I just talk about what's going on in Canada right now? GT: Sure, that would be great. Brian: I just got back last week, it was a week ago today from Cranbrook, [British Columbia,] Canada. That is where they are holding a trial right now for two leading polygamists: Winston Blackmore and J...
Cranbrook is Devon's newest town, but the journey hasn't been an entirely smooth one. There were some early successes, such as schools completed before residents moved in, but it took 12 years for a supermarket to open. Devoncast finds out about the latest developments and those still to come in Cranbrook from one of the town's district councillors, Kevin Blakey, who also discusses what lessons can be learned as East Devon starts embarking on its second new town. Plus, we hear from Feniton's district councillor, Alasdair Bruce, about why he and many of its residents were dismayed that a planning application for 35 homes was approved in the flood-prone village. Beyond that, we reveal the details about a new link between Plymouth and the Nordic country of Finland, and get all the details of the Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival, which happens this weekend (Fri 7 and Saturday 8 March). Finally, we tread the boards with Stefanie Jones, the leading lady in Plymouth's Theatre Royal production of the hit Disney musical, Mary Poppins. It's all in the latest edition of Devoncast, from Radio Exe and the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Some of Australia's elite all boys schools have been making headlines again - one for all the wrong reasons. Following an exposé revealing female teachers at a Sydney school felt unsafe and marginalised by the toxic behaviours of both students and other teachers. This follows from numerous other reports in recent years, including 2022 when a separate Sydney school expelled six students after a brutal hazing ritual was exposed. So, is it time to dismantle the all boys school system? In this episode of The Quicky, we speak with a man who works with students across Australia teaching healthy masculinity. In this episode Mark interviews bestselling author Bobby Hutchinson about her unique journey through traditional publishing and self-publishing. Prior to the interview, Mark shares comments from recent episodes, a personal update, welcomes new Patron Skye MacKinnon and a word about this episode's sponsor. This episode is sponsored by patrons of the Stark Reflections Podcast. Learn more at: https://www.patreon.com/starkreflections In their conversation, Mark and Bobby talk about: What prompted Bobby to start writing in 1980 at the age of 40 Leveraging her training for the Vancouver Marathon in order to use that time in her head to decide what to do Her experience winning a Chatelaine short story writing contest Researching which books were selling by purchasing and reading 100 Harlequin novels before sending her first manuscript in which sold right away Selling 17 more of her books after those first two Signing with a New York agent who was recommended to her by her agent Writing and selling 40 more novels to Harlequin, and realizing that since she already had the relationship with them prior to signing with her agent, all her agent was doing for her was taking 10% of her cut of those sales Realizing that her agent was more interested in selling myself than selling Bobby's novels Giving up writing for a while to start a Bed and Breakfast in Vancouver - which led to a book she ended up writing called How Not to Run a B&B Hiring a vanity publisher prior to exploring the possibility of DIY self-publishing Getting the rights back to many of the novels she was written for Harlequin and self-publishing those books directly to Amazon The importance of writing the stories that she was super-involved in and passionate about writing "Going Wide" with her publishing through Smashwords in the beginning, but then being drawn into the world of Kindle Unlimited Accidentally getting screwed over by Amazon and having all of her books taken down from the platform because of a lone title that was still published in some obscure country Reading Mark's book WIDE FOR THE WIN about a year or so ago, at about the time her Amazon sales were starting to go down Bobby's recommendation to not take all your books down from KDP Select/Kindle Unlimited overnight Realizing that at an older age (Bobby is now 83), a person doesn't need nearly as much money as they used to The Public Lending Right registration (for Canadian authors) that Bobby has registered for The question, when re-publishing older books, on whether or not an author should update them to include more modern setting, such as adding cell phones, etc into them Being excited about Artificial Intelligence as a marvelous tool that authors can use How it's really hard to properly predict what is going to happen with a book when it is published The way that Harlequin was a fantastic training ground for Bobby Writing a book about living and traveling in a van (How Not to Vanagon) Discovering her love of camping and the new memoir (Me and Calamity Jane) Advice Bobby would offer to authors who want to get started The value of pretending to be a famous writer in whatever genre you're writing Why Bobby thinks that writing fast can make you a better writer And more . . . (Well, maybe not time travel. But who knows?) She started writing by making up a short story while training for the Vancouver marathon and reading a book called How To Write Short Stories. She was celebrating being 50. Chatelaine magazine was having a contest for the best short fiction in Canada, and she won first prize, $5000 for a 5000-word story called "Pheidippides Was Not A Family Man." She then wrote a romance for Harlequin Superromance, sold it and went on to write about 60 more. With no real qualifications, she taught night school classes in Romance and Creativity at Okanagan College and a correspondence course at the University of Saskatchewan. Bored with writing only for Harlequin, she wrote three long romantic comedies and sold them to Dorchester Publishing. She also sold romantic time travel to Avon. In 2014, she began self-publishing, at first using a ridiculously expensive vanity service and then learning about Amazon. If there's a mistake to be made in writing and publishing, Bobby has made it. She published wide with Smashwords, and when KU started, she withdrew her wide books and became exclusive, accidentally leaving one solitary book up in maybe Angola. Amazon took all her books down. A begging letter to Jeff Bezos got them reinstated. She should have stopped while she was ahead and gone wide again. A year ago, she came to her senses after reading Wide For The Win, took everything off of KU and began the tedious process of putting 50+ books up everywhere else. She lives alone in a funky little cottage in Cranbrook, B.C., a small city in the Canadian Rockies. In the summer, she hauls her very small travel trailer, Calamity Jane, to campgrounds. In the winter, she hibernates. She faints at the sight of blood, although her best-selling medical romance series, Emergency, does have the occasional scene involving bodily fluids. These days, she still writes mostly romance, with a few short stories and memoirs tossed in for fun. How Not To Run A B&B, a memoir set in Vancouver, was chosen by the Kootenay Library Association as Best Book of the Year, and is now being made into a film. Slowly. She lives in the land of possibility. And she's writing faster than ever because at 83, who knows when she'll head off to seek the Great Perhaps? She needs to finish that last book on the last day; as any writer knows, that deadline's tricky! Interview with Ian M Berzins, President & CEO of Canadian Critical Minerals Inc.Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/braveheart-resources-bht-stepping-stones-to-success-1338Recording date: 13th November 2023Canadian Critical Minerals (TSXV:CCMI) is a Calgary-based mining company focused on copper and battery metals projects in Canada. The company has two main projects - the past-producing Bull River copper mine near Cranbrook, BC, and the Thierry copper project in Ontario. Bull River is Canadian Critical Minerals' flagship project, with existing usable infrastructure of about $100 million. Canadian Critical Minerals has completed dewatering and rehabilitation work to prepare for a restart of mining. The company is awaiting final permits and plans to begin processing material from an on-site 180,000-tonne stockpile in 2024 under an ore purchase agreement with New Gold. This is expected to generate $4-5 million in revenue over 15-18 months to fund ongoing permitting and development. Longer-term plans are to refurbish the underground mine and mill to resume commercial production. The Thierry project is an earlier-stage copper asset with an estimated 1.3 billion pounds of copper. Canadian Critical Minerals recently sold a 61% interest to Orecap Invest Corp. to advance exploration and development, and retains a 39% interest as the company will benefit from milestone payments as resources grow. Canadian Critical Minerals continues to have a tight capital structure and is focused on generating near-term cash flow to fund corporate overhead and advance its projects without further dilution. Upcoming potential catalysts are final permits at Bull River and exploration results from Thierry.View Canadian Critical Minerals company profile here: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/canadian-critical-minerals-incSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com
