A Mother in Israel // Becky Pickett // Judges 5:7 by Hope Church Winchester

In this message from our Light in the Darkness series in Judges, we look at the sobering story of Jephthah in Judges 11. His life shows both the grace of God, who uses flawed and unlikely people, and the danger of acting without carefully listening to God's Word. Jephthah was a capable leader and a valiant warrior, yet a rash vow made in fear and doubt led to devastating consequences. Through this difficult passage we see the importance of trusting God rather than trying to bargain with Him, and the wisdom of letting Scripture guide our decisions. The story ultimately points us beyond human failure to the one true and willing sacrifice: Jesus Christ. Where Jephthah's story reveals human foolishness, the cross reveals the wisdom and power of God. In this sermon we explore: - How God often uses unlikely and broken people - The danger of rash promises and trying to control outcomes - Why Scripture must shape how we live and make decisions - How the story ultimately points us to Christ and the cross

Andi helps lead our prayers for the neurodiverse and learning disabled community, both within Hope Church and across our city. Andi shares his heart for inclusion, compassion, and dignity, reminding us that every person is an essential and honoured part of God's family.

Sandra shares her story of coming to faith later in life and reflects on the gift of family — not just within our homes, but within the church community too. She reminds us that God brings together people from every background and stage of life, forming one family rooted in love, safety, and belonging.

Today we're praying for Hope Kids. Gideon and Ihie have recorded a short video to help guide our prayers for the children in our church and their families. Matthew 19:14 “Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them...the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.'” Prayer points: 1. Thankfulness for our children and families Thank God for the children in Hope Church and for families who love them and teach them about Jesus. 2. Friendship, growth, and learning Pray that children would build meaningful friendships and do well at school, growing in confidence and ability. 3. Godly influence and Christlike character Pray that children would not be shaped by unhealthy influences, but would walk in the light of Christ, showing kindness, obedience, and sharing the love of Jesus.

Today we're praying for young people in our communities. Caitlyn, who is part of Hope Youth, has recorded a short video to help guide our prayers. 2 Timothy 2:22 “Flee youthful passions, pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace.” Prayer points: 1. Young people who don't yet know Jesus Pray that this generation would find real love, hope, and peace in Jesus rather than what the world offers. 2. Courage to live out faith Pray for young Christians in schools, colleges, workplaces, and friendship groups, that they would keep trusting Jesus and stand firm in their faith, even when it's hard. 3. Church, community, and revival Pray for churches and youth groups to be welcoming, life-giving communities, and for revival in our schools, colleges, and friendship groups.

Today we're praying for people who are marginalised, vulnerable, and experiencing homelessness in our city. Sam, who serves at Hope Street Café, has recorded a short video to help guide our prayers. Psalm 72:12-14 (CSB) “For he will rescue the poor who cry out and the afflicted who have no helper. He will have pity on the poor and the helpless and save the lives of the poor, for their lives are precious in his sight.” Prayer points: 1. Support and provision across Winchester Pray for the council, housing teams, and local services providing accommodation and practical support, that they would work together well and provide what's needed. 2. Healing and recovery Pray for drug and alcohol support services across the city, and for real help, hope, and freedom for those struggling with addiction. 3. Strength and wisdom for Hope Street Café Pray for volunteers and leaders, for discernment, unity, and continued compassion as they serve. 4. Boldness and joy through the Holy Spirit Pray for opportunities to share the gospel, and for an ongoing outpouring of the Holy Spirit, sustaining deep joy and drawing people to know Jesus.

Today we're praying for students and young adults, and Abi from our student community has recorded a short video to help guide our prayers. Proverbs 1:5–7 (CSB) "Let a wise person listen and increase learning… The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge." Prayer points: 1. Hunger for God Pray that students would grow in faith, love God's Word, and have courage to share their faith with those around them. 2. Strong, Christ-centred community Pray that the student community at Hope would be loving, safe, and full of Jesus' joy. 3. Peace, purpose, and resilience Pray that students would discern God's plan for their lives, trust His leading, and experience peace in decisions.
