The eighth commandment prohibits theft. This means that God acknowledges personal property. God calls us to respect the property of others while being thankful for what God has given us and being good stewards of it. In this episode of Sermon B-Sides, Pastor Jon and Pastor Rusten discuss ideas like Communism and how they subvert God's law by undermining personal property. It's the seedy time of summer. This week of the fourth of July we're working from the premise that foundational to good citizenship is great stewardship of place (plants and people) and we are looking to the desert Southwest in conversation with Alexandra Zamecnik, Executive Director of Native Seed/SEARCH. For more than four decades, Native Seeds/SEARCH (NS/S) has stewarded the seeds of the desert Southwest and Mexico. Founded in 1983 in response to the concern of farmers, gardeners, Indigenous community members, and conservationists about the devastating loss of seed diversity, NS/S today conserves more than 1,800 regional culturally and climatically significant seed varieties. The work is not only the preservation of these seeds for the future, but also for their distribution today, celebrating and in support of communities of this desert region who have stewarded these seeds for time far longer than memory. I met Alexandra and many of her team back in 2021, while researching What We Sow took me to the NS/S HQ in Tucson. I am so pleased to welcome her and share this growing work forward finally. Enjoy! Cultivating Place now has a donate button! We thank you so much for listening over the years, and we hope you'll support Cultivating Place. We can't thank you enough for making it possible for this program to grow even more of these types of conversations. The show is available as a podcast on SoundCloud, iTunes, and Google Podcasts. Helping our congregations to live as good stewards and generous people is a responsibility church leaders should take seriously. Oftentimes, it is a lack of financial education that prevents people from growing in this area of their faith. Thankfully, there are people in our midst, like Stephen Hartley, our guest in today's episode, who are passionate and willing to provide the education and knowledge our people need. In this episode, we're talking about a not-well-known tool, a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), available to seniors that will help them better steward their resources and perhaps increase their generosity.

In episode 55 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, we talk about stewardship marketing, public land access for varying user groups, and how we can use our strengths to make a collective impact for good. Any type of branding and brand marketing is always super interesting to me, and I was really excited when the idea for this episode was brought to my attention by Becky Marcelliano. Becky is the Senior Access and Stewardship Marketing Manager for OnX. Her love of the outdoors started in the hills of New Jersey, but bigger mountains drew her to the Mountain West, where she's spent the last two decades doing a multitude of things, including teaching environmental education, guiding wilderness travel trips, and managing marketing teams for various outdoor brands in the industry. Guest Ben Muresan Humble says that you deserve the life God has for you, but it might not be the life you have now. Ben has developed the largest private mortgage company in southwestern Ontario and has coached over 2,000 students in business and investing. When his bank account hit one million dollars, he didn't want to celebrate. Instead of a party, it turns out he had a reckoning about the impact he wanted to have with his business. He says it's not about hitting financial milestones; it's about who you become along the way and how you steward the business God has entrusted to you. You need to listen to this interview if you: are ready to serve Christ in the marketplace unapologetically, want to break free from the workaholic cycle and into Christ-like stewardship, and wish to honor God physically, mentally, and through your business. So tune in for the passion and energy you need to not only take your leadership to the next level, but your faith. About the guest: Ben Muresan was born in 1985 in Romania, at a time when the country was under communist rule. His family escaped before the revolution and landed in an Austrian refugee camp in 1990. After immigrating to Canada and eventually reuniting with his siblings, Ben developed a passion for life and a gratitude mindset. His parents' sacrifice for a better life developed a deep sense of responsibility within him early on in life. He dreamt of building an empire: motivating, entertaining, and investing in other people. Today Ben has developed the largest private mortgage company in southwestern Ontario and has coached over 2,000 students in business and investing. About the host: Following a successful career as CEO, Bobby sold his business to a publicly-traded company. In what he calls his "second half of life", Bobby seeks to pour Biblically-based principles into growth-minded business, church, and non-profit leaders. Through Values-Driven Leadership, Bobby serves as an Executive Coach and Training Consultant for organizations. He shares many of his principles and practices through a weekly blog, the True North Leader podcast, and through three books he has authored: Principled Profits: Outward Success Is an Inside Job, True North Business: A Leader's Guide to Extraordinary Growth and Impact, and The Freedom Paradox: Is Unbridled Freedom Dividing America?
