Seikomart, a vaporwave label, impresses me so much that I wanted to dedicate an entire video to the unboxing of my copy of Beach Babes & Vapor Waves by クリスタルKITSUNE.Originally released on Seikomart March 11, 2019 digitally, this album marked a milestone for Future Funk producer クリスタルKITSUNE. Not only arrivinng on Seikomart lead to his album makinng it on cassette. With the release of the cassette, the album, Beach Babes & Vapor Waves, quickly sold out. Those who were fortunate to grab a copy got 3 bonus tracks only to be heard in the physical form. Future Funk and Vaporwave News of June 1st - 7th, 2019Label News水曜日
CEMETERY MOONGLOW by EquipBefore going into the song lets talk about the background of this 7”. Equip is working on his next album “CURSEBREAKER X” leading up to this album release there’s 3 acts or singles to hype up the album. Equip is unique in our scene as they tends to stay closer to the SNES style of music with a very synth pop mixed with a Castlevania sound. In this first act, Cemetery Moonglow, to our surprise we got a 7”. It contains a single, and then 3 remixes by Satin Sheets, Dinosaur On Fire and R23X. Each remix has it’s own unique spin on the catchy melody and I think it’s pretty awesome we got a 7” out of it. Hope act 2 and 3 get one too for the collectors out there. At the time of this recording there’s 44 vinyl left out the 300. Volume 128 by Silver RichardsOriginally released on the now defunct label Fortune 500, the Same label that rejected John Zobelle leading him to start Business Casual. Volume 128 is known as a quintessential release to the vaporwave scene. When released in 2014 the album stayed true to the roots of vaporwaves theme of high class life, pool sides and 80s cars. With songs like Runway, Cruising and Ocean Breeze this album is a great escape to a fancy life most of us will never live. Well 5 years later Palm 84 has teamed up with Silver Richards for a 12” vinyl and cassette release. It’s a classic in the scene and to have it publish on cassette and vinyl in 2019 so many years later makes it a must own.On initial release vinyl has 150 and 200 on cassette for this editionPARADER by HATENAOriginally released last month, HATENA has teamed up with Lucid Shores for MiniDisc release of this super funky album. HATENA has been releasing music in the scene for quite a while and I think this is his most mature album yet. Tracks like Moves, Let’s Get It On and Begin2Touch are instant club bangers and sure to have to moving your body on first listen. My favorite thing about HATENA is his ability to find such unique samples and turn them into a new experience. He’s like the mast of finding samples. If you love MiniDisc, this one needs to be in your collection. If not maybe it’s time you “Begin2touch” the wonderful world of MiniDisc.2 you digitally that should be on your phoneANNIVERSARY VOL . 6 by Various Artists (Business Casual)As mentioned before Business Casual was started when John Zobelle was rejected from various vaporwave labels and he decided he would make his own. Not only was this one of the best decisions he could have made but he also changed the face of Vaporwave. Although this album was sold on cassette and is now sold out the 27 tracks with 27 different artists from this label coming together to release this makes for such an awesome release. If Business Casual is new to you or you’re interested in hearing the top artists from the label this is a great introduction. Not only do you get to celebrate the 6 years with BC but you too are part of this history by being in our scene now. Pretty cool to think about. For those who don’t know I did release a mini doc of BC with Middle class comfort to celebrate 6 years. Check that out on youtube or podcast.Forgotten Summers by UNI DELUXEI knew this album was coming out but I had no clue it was going to take our scene by a storm. Hope everyone got their ticket cause like I said I’ll see you there. As some of you know Saint Pepsi is going to be at 100% electronic which is actually a pretty big deal. Cause in 2014 Pepsi legally told him he can’t use that name any more… but from my understanding he isn’t allowed to release new music under the name, hence the SKYLAR name now. Regardless we’ll here his music at 100%. This isn’t what I want to bring up tho, H&M goes and creates a crew neck titled “original great vibes” with a “vaporwave” like circle all using a familiar blue and red color… Hit Vibes anyone? So it looks like this is pissing SKYLAR off and we might see some kind of Merch at 100% electronicon from him. Wave 2 is really SKYLAR telling Pepsi to f them selves :PAlso, legally I can’t confirm or deny this but there was a rumor that 4 new Saint Pepsi albums will be released before electronicon. IntroductionLate last month I started messing with the idea of putting together a special episode to celebrate 6 years of Business Casual the Vaporwave sub-genre label. Then I started talking to MiddleClassComfort about it and to really make this idea a reality we decided to collaborate to create this excited anthology based on one of the biggest labels in our scene, Business Casual. The video is an accompaniment to a multiple part series we both will release regarding some of the artists on the label. So as this project was so large, we are releasing the headline video “The History of Business Casual” on both of our channels. Below will be a more detailed written out show notes for the above youtube video. In the following weeks, MiddleClassComfort and I will be releasing some deep dives on some of the artists of Business Casual on our own separate channels. So go subscribe to MiddleClassComfort or myself on youtube to stay up to date. Credits:– Audio Editing: MiddleClassComfort– Video Editing: KITE0080 / Musics the Hang Up– Music: Thanks to all the artists who allowed us to use their music on this video with permission. (we always ask permission). The History of Business CasualBusiness Casual was started by John Zobele May 10th, 2013. He had been working on music in the vaporwave scene but had no luck getting on the few labels that existed. Out of fustration after no hearing back from Fortune 500, a debunked vaporwave label since 2015, he decided to start his own label. Over the past 6 years he was able to release his own music on Business Casual under the various aliases; Christtt, Cordless Soul Machine, stab something, and Bye-Product. Even supporting some of the songs originally sent to Fortune 500 that ultimately become his most popular album Frasierwave. but that’s only a small part of the Business Casual history, the artists, the cassette releases and ability to form such a rooted label starts with one release, Digital Office One.Digital Office One was digitally released on Business Casual on May 10, 2013 the founding date of the label. What makes the release interesting was the idea of releasing a compilation of various artists Zobele knew, “I wanted to start off the label with something big that i could get a bunch of people interested in the label at the same time, I had some friends on soundcloud and asked them to contribute a track and the rest is history.”And the friends he had? Turns out would be some of the most influential in the scene, names still known today; b o d y l i n e, DeLorean.88, architecture in tokyo, Miami Vice and others. The release worked and soon enough we started seeing new releases from various artists throughout the year. Some including マクロスMACROSS 82-99, bl00dwave, Windows 96 and Ursula’s Cartridges. Leading to not only sticking to traditional Vaporwave but turning the label into Future Funk, Nu Disco, Mallsoft, and other sub genres. These days we are all too familiar with the idea that every Friday at noon a new artists and new album will come out of Business Casual, usually on cassette. But that didn’t occur until the second anniversary, with the release of Anniversary Vol.2, then the start of weekly cassettes become a fan favorite. Then the idea of BizBoxs, themed monthly releases of 3 cassettes, posters and more. Year after Year, Months after Months John Zobele was releasing cassettes made from his hands. From 2013 to 2016 over 2100Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/musicsthehangup)

I usually like their music a lot, I’ve followed them for a bit and I think their personality could shine on an interview. Vape Tapes on the other hand, he reached out to me.I wasn’t sure of the idea of interviewing Vape Tapes as I didn’t know much about them and because of a big fact! They are a Vaporwave Label, one that wasn’t much established but they had physical releases and the kid running it was very eager to come on the show. So I finally caved and this was the out come. Luckily this gave us a chance to learn more about the early stages of starting a vaporwave label. SHOW NOTESThe artists of Vape TapesAs some of you might know Vape Tapes, they released albums on vinyl and cassette for artists such as Nostalgic Depressoin, Cardian松の木, Saint Peanut and V A P O R S O F T W O R K S 蒸気ソフト. Well that’s all at the moment but last week we did get confirmation that Melonade will be releasing his self titled, Melonade, on cassette soon with Vape Tapes. (Which BTW, we recently interviewed Future Funk artist Melonade)So maybe the label is new but they’re growing and those early stages there’s a lot of learning to do, so I thought this was the idea time to pick the brain of the owner to teach us how to start our own label. So why start a label? He came into the scene with one goal in mind, help smaller artists get on physical media. A theme I’ve seen with other label but after seeing サクラSAKURA-LEE unsuccessfully fund a quates funding, he knew his label could be useful for all artist. Even if it is small runs.So why start one yourself? You love the music, you want to see those small artist on physical media, you want to make friends with the artists… these are all options or questions maybe to ask yourself before starting. Luckily the entry of barrier is low and pretty cost effective you go down the DIY approach. Be DIY first!Cassettes are cheap, dubbing to cassettes is practically free after you get your own cassette player. Little known fact, most people were pirating music in the 80s straight off the radio on to cassette, it’s been done for years and now we’re doing it again in the vaporwave scene. It’s simple, easy and get’s music out there off the internet and in the hands of fans. For those who are interested in how to dub a cassette, here’s a little youtube video I found that can help explain the process.DIY approach is easy for cassette but then coming to vinyl, it becomes a little more difficult, we’ll talk about how to do that later.Ok, I made cassette but they’re not sellingWell before you make this mistake, here’s a tip from Vape Tapes. Do pre-orders! In the early days of running your label, you’re probably going to have a small audience if you’re artists are small too. Now if you convince more well known artists, ask them to promote the selling of the cassette, heck ask me to promote it. I do it every day with over 100 artists (probably, idk got to check). If pre-orders are not your thing, you can also do small runs. I’ve seen in the scene very successful sales from label who do 10, 20 even 30 run cassette because the idea of limited Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/musicsthehangup)

Desert Sand Feels Warm At Night – Slushwave ArtistInitially I had never heard of anything like Desert Sand Feels Warm At Night (Desert Sand) in the vaporwave scene, yet I was seeing his cassette, name and music passed around throughout the community. So when I started listening to his music, the long 20 minute tracks, the slow ambient feel and the mysterious long artist name caught my attention in more than one ways. I knew I had to interview him to find out more of this force of musical nature and learn more about how he became so big.Turns out not even he knows how he was able to become such a house hold name in the scene but he does have tips for what worked for him in the early days of being a vaporwave artists. We talked about how he found his sound, when to contact labels and how to improve when you’re not getting any listens. Can’t you believe at one point he barely had 1 listen in the beginning?sparkling water – coming to vinylOne of his most popular albums, sparkling water, will be releasing with Palm ’84 on May 1st, 2019 on vinyl (Which is literally tomorrow if you’re viewing this interview on release). The great news is although originally it was only going to be 100 copies, it has been announced that they are going to release it under a 24-hour unlimited pre-order. So buy yourself one, a friend and your mom because this might be the last time we see this on vinyl. And how can you don’t get one with such a cool blue vinyl record look it has.If you haven’t had a chance to listen to the album yet you can take a preview on bandcamp until the vinyl goes live. but make sure to check back on the Palm ’84 bandcamp as that’s where the album will be released on vinyl.Follow Musics the Hang Up:Twitter: https://twitter.com/musicsthehangupinstagram: https://instagram.com/musicsthehangupWe are also on iTunes Podcast where you can find this episode and more just like ithttp://musicsthehangup.com/itunes----Find all interviews and weekly updates here:https://instagram.com/musicsthehangupSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/musicsthehangup)
