On "Hot Takes" this week, we had a sitdown session with future funk hit-maker Cyanblue! Enigmatic, eccentric, and extremely skilled, we brought Cyan on to fill us in, treat us to some of his insights, and expose any uninitiated viewers to his outrageous personality. Having been producing music outside the vaporwave and future funk scene for the past ten years, Cyanblue exploded on the scene in October, 2021 with "Cyantology", a phenomenal album comprised of chopped and looped 80's R&B and new jack swing. Not only did he revitalize the scene, as he would claim, but he's since gone on to collaborate with many renowned acts and will be releasing a remix album of "Cyantology" in late March as well. For episode forty-three, we discussed the skills of various future funk and French house acts. Cyanblue imparted his thoughts on anime in future funk music, Death's Dynamic Shroud, Macintosh Plus, and metal music. Hearing Cyanblue repeatedly shoehorn in ways to sell the audience on the new Cyanblue in that wild accent of his was a hilarious highlight! As he stated, "Good future funk is future funk that is chopped; lazy future funk is in my opinion simply mislabeled French house." Don't miss this zany episode with our new friend Cyanblue! "Hot Takes" is a safe space for all opinions! Join the conversation at https://linktr.ee/hottakesvapor

On this episode of the Zer0 Books Archive, Will interviews Grafton Tanner about his 2016 book Babbling Corpse: Vaporwave and the Commodification of Ghosts. Grafton works at the University of Georgia, in the Department of Communication Studies, and has written two more recent books, apt for our contemporary moment: The Circle of the Snake: Nostalgia and Utopia in the Age of Big Tech, published with Zer0 in 2020, and most recently The Hours Have Lost Their Clock: The Politics of Nostalgia, published in October 2021 with Repeater Books. It is now over 10 years since the release of perhaps the most important work of the vaporwave genre, Macintosh Plus's Floral Shoppe, whose influence on digital aesthetics, both sonic and visual, is today undeniable. This discussion is an attempt at reawakening of the theoretical and practical implications of Babbling Corpse, touching on concepts of the non-human, nostalgia, hauntology, and making reference to the work of Derrida, Fisher, Meillasoux, Eshun, Haraway and Deleuze. Towards the end, we try to think about what nostalgia could do for the left today.Support Zer0 Books on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/zerobooksSubscribe: http://bit.ly/SubZeroBooksFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ZeroBooks/Twitter: https://twitter.com/zer0books-----Other links:Check out the projects of some of the new contributors to Zer0 Books:Acid HorizonPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/acidhorizonpo...iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/acidhorizonMerch: crit-drip.comProfane IlluminationsTwitter: https://twitter.com/profaneshowThe Horror VanguardPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/horrorvanguardiTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...Buddies Without OrgansWebsite: https://buddieswithout.org/Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast...Xenogothic: https://xenogothic.com/

Shadow Warrior by Rajeev Srinivasan
Ep. 41: Has Apple peaked?

Shadow Warrior by Rajeev Srinivasan

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 31, 2021 11:25

A version of this essay was published by swarajya magazine at https://swarajyamag.com/technology/has-apple-peakedApple CEO Tim Cook recently celebrated 10 years at its helm. It is the most valuable company in history, at about $2.5 trillion -- an unimaginably stratospheric number -- and Cook has steered it to its massive valuation. That is a surprise to many who thought Cook, basically an operations man, would never be able to fill the shoes of the flamboyant and dashing Steve Jobs. Cook has indeed done a remarkable job of steering Apple. But what next? The last real innovation Apple produced is the iPhone, and that was a while ago: 2007, to be precise. It is still a huge money-spinner, but where exactly has Apple innovated since then, except in minor, supporting products like the Apple Watch and the Apple Airpods? There is an interesting claim by management theorist Simon Sinek that what distinguishes Apple is the ‘why?’ question. Why does Apple exist? Well, in Steve Jobs’ terminology, it was to make “insanely great products”. As Sinek would say, “Want to buy one?”. Jobs saw a lot of wonderful new technologies at Xerox PARC and intuitively understood how these were transformative, and so he adapted them. In stark contrast, other technology companies have mundane goals: profit margins, market penetration, etc. But that differentiation -- design excellence -- may well have walked out the door with the exits of Steve Jobs and Jonathan Ive, the chief designer. And brilliant design doesn’t always succeed, unless you are able to respond to the unarticulated needs of the people who will buy the products (which is the gospel of the discipline of ‘design thinking’, which, confusingly, is not about design per se but about solving problems the way a designer would).Apple did have its share of fiascos: for instance the hand-held computer (personal digital assistant) named the Newton. Its demise almost brought the company down, and led to the exit of Jobs. On the other hand, the original Macintosh was a thing of beauty, and it was vastly superior to the competition. But my question remains, where is the innovation today? I hear there’s an Apple Car coming, or Apple Glasses, but they are not really “wow!”. Apple always shows up at the top of the list of innovative companies, but that is mostly resting on its laurels.I must make a disclaimer: I have a love-hate relationship with Apple. The very first computer that I personally owned was a Macintosh Plus that I bought for a princely sum even though I got a university student discount. It was the obvious choice at the time: along with a dot-matrix printer it enabled me to produce presentable reports, graphs and term papers. The alternative on offer was DOS-based PCs, which, although they had Lotus 1-2-3, were distinctly user-unfriendly and far less appealing. Source: Macintosh Plus, Photo by Thomas Millot on UnsplashThat Mac lasted me a long time: robust, rugged and reliable, in an all-in-one, portable chassis. Later, while working in Silicon Valley, I bought my second Mac, a Macintosh 2. This was a more conventional device with a separate monitor and CPU box. I bought it at a sale when the company Go went under: it was developing an OS for handheld devices, but it ran out of runway. To be honest, I didn’t like that Mac as much as the earlier one. But the real surprise came when I decided I needed a laptop a few years later. I found out that Windows-based laptops had come a long way, and I could buy one for roughly $1000, which was significantly less than Apple’s laptops were going for. So I bought a Toshiba; I have never bought an Apple laptop, although I had one from work a few years ago. It was nice, but for an office worker, and not a media creator, it was not more appealing than a Windows laptop. These days I am happy with my Chromebook, using a Windows machine only to run specialized applications, or some like Audacity that don’t run on the Chromebook. That sticker shock was the turning point for me. Maybe I was wrong in turning down a better put-together product than the average Windows laptop, but I was not willing to pay a premium for a consumer item. I may have been wrong, because my average Windows laptop has had a lifetime of only 3-4 years while the Macs, I hear, do not get obsolescent so quickly. I hear this about iPhones vs. Android phones too. I didn’t realize it then, but the issue I was up against was Apple’s business model of detailed control over everything. That makes the Apple ecosystem both attractive and forbidding. On the one hand, if you are willing to cede control to Apple, then you have a smooth and pleasant experience. This is what has created legions of Apple fanboyz, who are totally happy with the walled garden, and have no wish to exit. Oddly enough, Apple has become the Big Brother (albeit more benign) that it lampooned in the famous 1984 ad. There is a nice contrast between Apple’s highly integrated model (which incidentally ensures fat margins) and the Wintel model. I would certainly not call Wintel an ‘open’ system, because it was zealously controlled by Microsoft and Intel, but it was (is?) a disintegrated model, because although the principals held the IP tightly and extracted monopoly rents, there were opportunities for third parties to exist, and even thrive, where the two were not present. And they were not ubiquitous, unlike Apple in its own stack. Source: Strategicmanagementinsight.comWhich is the better model? There is no straight answer. Today Apple’s model is incredibly successful. Earlier the Wintel model was incredibly successful too. One of the concerns about Apple going forward is that it may have reached the end of this business model. They are trying to reinvent themselves as a services+product firm, but we will have to wait and see. There are several other issues. The first is, simply, size. It’s hard to sell more iPhones than there are people in a country, I suppose, even if they can afford them and want them. So Apple as a matter of basic economics will slow down, and its juicy profit margins will erode. In fact, I am rather amazed that there aren’t passable Chinese clones of Apple products. Maybe it’s the deterrent effect of Apple’s fearsome lawyers.Or maybe it is the symbiotic relationship between Apple and China. There is the famous story (it may be apocryphal) that the iPhone originally had a plastic screen, but Jobs found it scratched up easily, so at a late stage he insisted on a glass screen. The story goes that the only place where they could quickly ramp up and find enough people to cut and process the glass was in the factories of Apple’s Chinese partners. Source: Photo by David Švihovec on UnsplashSo the supply chain relationship between Apple and Chinese OEM’s has been good for both. I’m not sure if this will be feasible going forward, as there is a general intent on the part of the US to decouple from China (although this is opposed by both Big Tech and Wall Street). So this happy state of affairs in supply chain management is under threat, which may either increase Apple’s costs, or end up in Chinese erecting barriers to market access, or both. There are some clues in China’s recent clampdown on its own ‘high-tech’ companies like Alibaba, Didi Chuxing, etc. that China views these mostly e-commerce entities with disdain, preferring to direct investment towards the harder technologies such as, perhaps, quantum computing, biotechnology, energy, etc. They may well be right. Apple has more tangible products than Microsoft, Alphabet, Facebook, et al; still, when they all announced record earnings in July, investors were a little sceptical about future prospects. My feeling is that these Big Tech firms are sort of moving the deck chairs around on the Titanic. Their core businesses are plateauing, and they will have to enter into each others’ areas to sustain their growth; thus Apple is rumored to be building its own search engine (though it gets some $10 billion dollars from Google to be the search engine of choice on iPhones) and even an advertising platform. But the problem is that they are all following a model of advertising-led revenue (although Apple protests that they do not sell, or have to sell, their users’ data, I suspect they will not let go of user data that easily) or what is known as ‘surveillance capitalism’. This is already raising hackles among consumers as well as regulators concerned about monopolies, which these Big Tech firms do have in their niches. There is an increasing trend towards anonymity or even pseudonymity, and I suspect a business model will emerge where users keep their data to themselves, or demand payment for it. That may put a major crimp on their businesses, that is if the regulators don’t get to them first. There have been record fines imposed by the European Union, Russia, etc on these Big Tech companies, and the US competition authorities may weigh in as well.Whatever goes up will come down. We just don’t know when that will happen. It is certain that Apple will fade, as other champions have, for instance IBM or Toshiba. The question is when. My belief is that the best days are behind Apple, but I have been wrong before, so don’t count them out. The structural and environmental changes we see now argue that Apple is past its best days. 1600 words, Aug 30. 2021 This is a public episode. The History of Computing
The Apple Lisa

The History of Computing

Apple found massive success on the back of the Apple II. They went public like many of the late 70s computer companies and the story could have ended there, as it did for many computer companies of the era who were potentially bigger, had better technology, better go to market strategies, and/or even some who were far more innovative.  But it didn't. The journey to the next stage began with the Apple IIc, Apple IIgs, and other incrementally better, faster, or smaller models. Those funded the research and development of a number of projects. One was a new computer: the Lisa. I bet you thought we were jumping into the Mac next. Getting there. But twists and turns, as the title suggests.  The success of the Apple II led to many of the best and brightest minds in computers wanting to go work at Apple. Jobs came to be considered a visionary. The pressure to actually become one has been the fall of many a leader. And Jobs almost succumbed to it as well.  Some go down due to a lack of vision, others because they don't have the capacity for executional excellence. Some lack lieutenants they can trust. The story isn't clear with Jobs. He famously sought perfection. And sometimes he got close.  The Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, or PARC for short, had been a focal point of raw research and development, since 1970. They inherited many great innovations, outlandish ideas, amazing talent, and decades of research from academia and Cold War-inspired government grants. Ever since Sputnik, the National Science Foundation and the US Advanced Research Projects Agency had funded raw research. During Vietnam, that funding dried up and private industry moved in to take products to market.  Arthur Rock had come into Xerox in 1969, on the back of an investment into Scientific Data Systems. While on the board of Xerox, he got to see the advancements being made at PARC. PARC hired some of the oNLine System (NLS) team who worked to help ship the Xerox Alto in 1973, shipping a couple thousand computers. They followed that up with the Xerox Star in 1981, selling about 20,000. But PARC had been at it the whole time, inventing all kinds of goodness.  And so always thinking of the next computer, Apple started the Lisa project in 1978, the year after the release of the Apple II, when profits were just starting to roll in.  Story has it that Steve Jobs secured a visit to PARC and made out the back with the idea for a windowing personal computer GUI complete with a desktop metaphor. But not so fast. Apple had already begun the Lisa and Macintosh projects before Jobs visited Xerox. And after the Alto was shown off internally at Xerox in 1977, complete with Mother of All Demo-esque theatrics on stages using remote computers. They had the GUI, the mouse, and networking - while the other computers released that year, the Apple II, Commodore, and TRS-80 were still doing what Dartmouth, the University of Illinois, and others had been doing since the 60s - just at home instead of on time sharing computers.  In other words, enough people in computing had seen the oNLine System from Stanford. The graphical interface was coming and wouldn't be stopped. The mouse had been written about in scholarly journals. But it was all pretty expensive. The visits to PARC, and hiring some of the engineers, helped the teams at Apple figure out some of the problems they didn't even know they had. They helped make things better and they helped the team get there a little quicker. But by then the coming evolution in computing was inevitable.  Still, the Xerox Star was considered a failure. But Apple said “hold my beer” and got to work on a project that would become the Lisa. It started off simply enough: some ideas from Apple executives like Steve Jobs and then 10 people, led by Ken Rothmuller, to develop a system with windows and a mouse. Rothmuller got replaced with John Couch, Apple's 54th employee. Trip Hawkins got a great education in marketing on that team. He would later found Electronic Arts, one of the biggest video game publishers in the world. Larry Tesler from the Stanford AI Lab and then Xerox PARC joined the team to run the system software team. He'd been on ARPANet since writing Pub an early markup language and was instrumental in the Gypsy Word Processor, Smalltalk, and inventing copy and paste. Makes you feel small to think of some of this stuff.  Bruce Daniels, one of the Zork creators from MIT, joined the team from HP as the software manager.  Wayne Rosing, formerly of Digital and Data General, was brought in to design the hardware. He'd later lead the Sparc team and then become a VP of Engineering at Google.   The team grew. They brought in Bill Dresselhaus as a principal product designer for the look and use and design and even packaging. They started with a user interface and then created the hardware and applications.  Eventually there would be nearly 100 people working on the Lisa project and it would run over $150 million in R&D. After 4 years, they were still facing delays and while Jobs had been becoming more and more involved, he was removed from the project. The personal accounts I've heard seem to be closer to other large out of control projects at companies that I've seen though.  The Apple II used that MOS 6502 chip. And life was good. The Lisa used the Motorola 68000 at 5 MHz. This was a new architecture to replace the 6800. It was time to go 32-bit.  The Lisa was supposed to ship with between 1 and 2 megabytes of RAM. It had a built-in 12 inch screen that was 720 x 364.  They got to work building applications, releasing LisaWrite, LisaCalc, LisaDraw, LisaGraph, LisaGuide, LisaList, LisaProject, and LisaTerminal. They translated it to British English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.  All the pieces were starting to fall into place. But the project kept growing. And delays. Jobs got booted from the Lisa project amidst concerns it was bloated, behind schedule, wasting company resources, and that Jobs' perfectionism was going to result in a product that could never ship. The cost of the machine was over $10,000.  Thing is, as we'll get into later, every project went over budget and ran into delays for the next decade. Great ideas could then be capitalized on by others - even if a bit watered down. Some projects need to teach us how not to do projects - improve our institutional knowledge about the project or product discipline. That didn't exactly happen with Lisa.  We see times in the history of computing and technology for that matter, when a product is just too far advanced for its time. That would be the Xerox Alto. As costs come down, we can then bring ideas to a larger market. That should have been the Lisa. But it wasn't. While nearly half the cost of a Xerox Star, less than half the number of units were sold. Following the release of the Lisa, we got other desktop metaphors and graphical interfaces. Agat out of the Soviet Union, SGI, Visi (makers of Visicalc), GEM from Digital Research, DeskMate from Tandy, Amiga Intuition, Acorn Master Compact, the Arthur for the ARM, and the initial releases of Microsoft Windows. By the late 1980s the graphical interface was ubiquitous and computers were the easiest to use for the novice than they'd ever been before.  But developers didn't flock to the system as they'd done with the Apple II. You needed a specialized development workstation so why would they? People didn't understand the menuing system yet. As someone who's written command line tools, sometimes they're just easier than burying buttons in complicated graphical interfaces.  “I'm not dead yet… just… badly burned. Or sick, as it were.” Apple released the Lisa 2 in 1984. It went for about half the price and was a little more stable. One reason was that the Twiggy disk drives Apple built for the Lisa were replaced with Sony microfloppy drives. This looked much more like what we'd get with the Mac, only with expansion slots.  The end of the Lisa project was more of a fizzle. After the original Mac was released, Lisa shipped as the Macintosh XL, for $4,000. Sun Remarketing built MacWorks to emulate the Macintosh environment and that became the main application of the Macintosh XL.  Sun Remarketing bought 5,000 of the Mac XLs and improved them somewhat. The last of the 2,700 Lisa computers were buried in a landfill in Utah in 1989. As the whole project had been, they ended up being a write-off. Apple traded them out for a deep discount on the Macintosh Plus. By then, Steve Jobs was long gone, Apple was all about the Mac and the next year General Magic would begin ushering in the era of mobile devices.  The Lisa was a technical marvel at the time and a critical step in the evolution of the desktop metaphor, then nearly twenty years old, beginning at Stanford on NASA and ARPA grants, evolving further at PARC when members of the team went there, and continuing on at Apple. The lessons learned in the Lisa project were immense and helped inform the evolution of the next project, the Mac. But might the product have actually gained traction in the market if Steve Jobs had not been telling people within Apple and outside that the Mac was the next thing, while the Apple II line was still accounting for most of the revenue of the company? There's really no way to tell. The Mac used a newer Motorola 68000 at nearly 8 megahertz so was faster, the OS was cleaner, the machine was prettier. It was smaller, boxier like the newer Japanese cars at the time. It was just better. But it probably couldn't have been if not for the Lisa. Lisa was slower than it was supposed to be. The operating system tended to be fragile. There were recalls. Steve Jobs was never afraid to cannibalize a product to make the next awesome thing. He did so with Lisa. If we step back and look at the Lisa as an R&D project, it was a resounding success. But as a public company, the shareholders didn't see it that way at the time.  So next time there's an R&D project running amuck, think about this. The Lisa changed the world, ushering in the era of the graphical interface. All for the low cost of $50 million after sales of the device are taken out of it. But they had to start anew with the Mac and only bring in the parts that worked. They built out too much technical debt while developing the product to do anything else. While it can be painful - sometimes it's best to start with a fresh circuit board and a blank command line editor. Then we can truly step back and figure out how we want to change the world.

The Virtual Ocean is a “Let’s Listen” vaporwave discovery podcast. What is vaporwave? Vaporwave is a music genre (and internet meme) that appropriates mood music from the past while presenting subtle takes on modern day consumerist culture. The genre has drawn many passionate listeners with its powerful immersion, ambiguous commentaries, and the genre's unique ability to amalgamate with the memes created as its byproduct. It's also very, very, aesthetic. In each episode, we listen to tracks that make up genre and give our thoughts, emotions, and commentary on them. In episode 2, we listen to the most essential listen of the vaporwave genre: Vektroid/Macintosh Plus's Floral Shoppe. This album is considered a must-listen when it comes to this genre, and I break down how the album transports you from its dark abysses to its heavenly skies. Let's set sail on the Virtual Ocean.

# Description In 2013, two short years after it first appeared on the internet, Vaporwave was declared "dead". And yet, it still lives and has spawned a brood of micro-genres (Simpsonwave, Zeldawave, Glo-Fi, Mallsoft) in 2019. And what about the fans? Somehow, we try to tackle what this music is and figure out the people behind it. ## Episode Outline **Topics:** What is Vaporwave?, Is it a joke?, An internet micro-genre that seems to be constantly changing, Earnestness versus irony, pretentious art ideals versus memes ### First Impressions #### Z: When I first stumbled across Vaporwave, I was shocked by how evocative of some sort of nostalgia it was. Which is strange because I never was much of a mall rat, or spent a lot of time in places that played heavy muzak. And yet, there's a strange atmospheric quality to the music that reminds me of listening to a warbly radio from the bottom of a swimming pool -- which is still weird because I have never done that before in my life. #### T: I know next to nothing on this. I assumed that Vaporwave was some obscure genre of music that was facet of a facet of some genre I still couldn't pin down. #### G: I thought it was a fun meme thing where everything looks bad intentionally. ### Observations We really got caught up on the question of whether any of this stuff was earnest or just an enormous joke. Z especially took up the former position, saying (perhaps a little tongue in cheek) that Vaporwave is all about being a postmodern look at postmodern irony. G and T, on the other hand, kept pretty firmly in the "nah, in 2019 this is more of a meme" camp. ### Conclusions In the end, all three of us admitted to enjoying Vaporwave of some form or other (future funk, the first few albums, Hong Kong Express). T and Z in particular noted how they found the genre much more immediately emotionally evocative than a lot of other music, while G admitted to really getting into the philosophy, narrative and symbolism that can be found in the genre. But, none of us became hardcore Vaporwave fans after our limited exposure to the genre -- so go ahead and give the Macintosh Plus (aka Vektroid) album "Floral Shoppe" a listen! ## Where can you find us? Two days late, but we are here! We believe this is a keynote episode for season 2 - everyone who has been approached by a "hunbot" (which we define in the episode for those new to the movement) needs to have a few responses in their arsenal of replies so no one feels obligated to engage in their sales pitches. Sasha and Katie discuss some of the more common manipulative approaches MLM reps may use to guilt you into a sale or joining their team, but they also ensure that the responses they suggest you can use are RESPECTFUL to the rep. It should never be our intention to bully them or go out of our way to hurt them. Most of them are victims of the MLM structure themselves. BOUUUUUM !

NBN1: Conference planning and attending tips with SXSW Interactive's Hugh Forrest SXSW had a lot of lucky breaks along the way. For a long time, they struggled to find their voice. SXSW Interactive has grown astronomically because of social media and start-ups. More importantly, they are connected to a vibrant, rich, passionate, intelligent, and engaged community. "The more you can engage the community and work with the community, and reflect the passion, interests, and energy of the community, the stronger the event you can make." Learn how Hugh went from journalism to conference organizing. He also confesses what he wants to be when he grows up. SXSWi had less than 5,000 attendees in 2006. This year they are expecting nearly 30,000 people! Hugh shares advice for conference organizers who want to take their events to the next level. "Slow growth is good growth, grow organically." "Bigger is not necessarily better." How Hugh deals with the stress of his job. Good points here for you too. Conference building is a lot like doing a start-up. "Try not get too high when good things happen. Try not to get too low when bad things happen." Tips for breaking out of your regular groups and meeting new people at events. "...if you're an expert on sports and new media, you should go to something completely out of your wheelhouse. That's where you'll get the most value. We like to hang out with our friends, but the most valuable thing about SXSW is making new friends and new connections." - Hugh Forrest interview from Austin Post. The History of the Button presentation by Bill DeRouchey. "Choose things that are a little bit different and outside of your realm." "It's about making connections that can take your career to the next level." Hugh built SXSW's first database on his Macintosh Plus using Reflex. Remember Reflex? Hugh tends to be more active on Twitter than Facebook. Say hello by tweeting to him @Hugh_W_Forrest. He encourages his staff to engage with the people who have positive things to say about SXSW. He puts even more emphasis on engaging and reacting to people who may not have had a great experience. There's often more to learn from these people. You can often turn that critic into a cheerleader. Twitter was born at SXSW in 2007, Foursquare in 2009. What are the next trends? What's coming? Hugh shares his thoughts. Hugh talks about the DIY maker movement. 2014 sessions will be about wearable-computing and Internet of Things. Check out Narrative, the clip-on camera to document your life. SXSW Interactive runs March 7 - 11. Don't miss Hugh Forrest's best advice for attending SXSW. "Events like SXSW specialize in serendipity. Be ready to ditch that game plan at any given point." "Surrender to serendipity." Gaping Void's incredible artwork and #SXSW commentary.  Hugh recommends the book, Hatching Twitter: A True Story of Money, Power, Friendship, and Betrayal.
