Specifically, we're looking at the Satanic Panic series of albums by Vacation Bible School. Did you see that we're on Instagram now? Follow us there via this link or find it on our landing page. We're cool now. Tell your friends. Episode 42 delivers. In fact, we deliver two great scores right into your earholes. The first is the score for the 1997 film Princess Mononoke. The film was directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The composer of the soundtrack is Joe Hisaishi. They are not the same person, nor do they have the same first name. This is somehow relevant and makes sense when you listen to the episode. The second soundtrack we play is by Jerry Martin, Marc Russo (no relation to Jeff Russo of Star Trek Discovery fame), Kirk Casey and Dix Bruce. These cool guys created the soundtrack for the 2000 Maxis/EA video game The Sims. We play tracks from an album released in 2007. Here is the link to a cool Mallsoft playlist. Here is the link to our Mastodon. If you want to support us you can always write a comment here or on Instagram which would be highly appreciated. If you're interested in a more relaxed podcast about mostly (city-) building game soundtracks for the PC (think Anno, Settlers, Tycoons from the 90's and onwards) then check out Aufbaumusik. Enjoy this episode and please give us feedback!

Vaporwave is an art aesthetic that embodies the anxiety, disillusionment, and nihilism of the modern world. In music form, vaporwave dives deep into these unconscious anxieties, manifesting sounds from past decades - warping them, manipulating them, and summoning the ghost of the good times that were promised by modern capitalism, but never came.Vaporwave is an expression of the pains of the collective modern unconscious, taking the form of heroin-level escapism, ecstasy-inducing pop music, or dystopian ambient worlds.Because of its internet-based nature, its aesthetics have evolved so rapidly, further reflecting the chaotic subconscious of the modern mind.Vaporwave captures the modern unconscious of humans raised by the internet succinctly, and understanding this art form matters. In each episode, we listen to tracks that make up genre and give our thoughts, analysis, emotions, and commentary on them. Let's set sail on the Virtual Ocean. And now, for today's episode. This is our second 식료품groceries's record on this show. The concept of this particular album is extremely fascinating. 인터넷 쇼핑 (Ascension) is the musical expression of the dopamine cycle of online shopping. It treats the modern-day capitalist consumption cycle as almost a force of nature, something that we can't break out of, and musically it almost honors it the way an artist would honor true natural forces like the ocean, or a mountainscape.Let's set sail for 식료품groceries' 인터넷 쇼핑 (Ascension).
Support Night Clerk Radio on PatreonLike other vaporwave subgenres, mallsoft has evolved since its creation. Initially defined by sampling and reverb, new mallsoft albums drift towards exploring new compositions and themes. While actual shopping malls are sliding into the dustbin of history, the idea of mall ambiance lingers with us. The essence of mallsoft transcends the physicality of shopping malls. Banal commercial architecture with powerful HVAC, weird acoustics, and a genial indifference to human emotions will remain with us long after the last shopping mall is torn down. New mallsoft seeks to capture that essence.Music Discussed4D Gradients by ロップMALLACADEMYby Hallmark '87Related LinksロップMALL on BandcampA T R I U M by Hallmark '87 on Rate Your MusicCreditsMusic by: 2Mello Artwork by: Patsy McDowell Ross on TwitterBirk on TwitterNight Clerk Radio on Twitter

Hyperreality, a term coined by Jean Baudrillard, is the point at which the real can no longer be easily distinguished from fiction or simulation including simulations of realities that do not exist known as simulacra. The connection to vaporwave, a genre of music which seeks to induce nostalgia for eras that never existed, is immediately apparent. Christmas, particularly in the US, has become a yearly affair of seasonal pop music and rampant consumerism. Fortunately for us, this makes it the perfect target for vaporwave and mallsoft, where critiquing capitalism by manipulating pop music is the standard fare. This, combined with the ever-present themes of hauntology and nostalgia, means we have a lot to discuss. So, grab a mug of your favorite hot beverage and join us as we cover two albums that apply a vaporwave lens to Christmas music.Albums Discussed------------------FANTASY☆DELUXE CHRISTMAS EVE HOLIDAY SPECIALChristmastime at North Hills Mall by Vacation Bible SchoolRelated Links-------------What makes a song sound like Christmas? THE "LET'S LISTEN" VAPORWAVE PODCAST. Vaporwave is an art aesthetic that embodies the anxiety, disillusionment, and nihilism of the modern world. In music form, vaporwave dives deep into these unconscious anxieties, manifesting sounds from past decades - warping them, manipulating them, and summoning the ghost of the good times that were promised by modern capitalism, but never came. Vaporwave is an expression of the pains of the collective modern unconscious, taking the form of heroin-level escapism, ecstasy-inducing pop music, or dystopian ambient worlds. Because of its internet-based nature, its aesthetics have evolved so rapidly, further reflecting the chaotic subconscious of the modern mind.Vaporwave captures the modern unconscious of humans raised by the internet succinctly, and understanding this art form matters. In each episode, we listen to tracks that make up genre and give our thoughts, analysis, emotions, and commentary on them. Let's set sail on the Virtual Ocean. And now, for today’s episode. And now, for today’s episode.Merry Christmas! This episode is part 2 of our 2020 Christmas Special, where Jerrel and Brandon have more of a conversation about their lives, vaporwave in 2020, and the current insanity of the world. All while enjoying the comfort of an album the draws conjures a childhood Christmas nostalgia like no other... Come join us by the fireplace. :) Happy holidays!

A niche genre that embodies the musical spirit of being put on hold, sitting in waiting rooms, watching PowerPoint presentations, and of course, standing in elevators. This is the music of waiting. Of boredom. Mallsoft is a subgenre of vaporwave that aims to comment on our relationship with retail spaces and consumerism. By emulating and sampling muzak, often mixed with field recordings of actual stores, Mallsoft creates a sense of occupying now abandoned shopping centers. The Virtual Ocean is the “Let’s Listen” vaporwave discovery podcast. What is vaporwave?Vaporwave is a music genre (and internet meme) that appropriates mood music from the past while presenting subtle takes on modern-day consumerist culture. The genre has drawn many passionate listeners with its powerful immersion, ambiguous commentaries, and the genre's unique ability to amalgamate with the memes created as its byproduct. It's a genre with several subgenres that are extremely distinct from one another in sound and style; and yet evoke similar archetypal ideas that say, either explicitly or implicitly, a lot about the modern world. It's also very, very, aesthetic. In each episode, we listen to tracks that make up genre and give our thoughts, emotions, and commentary on them.Vaportrap. The beautiful marriage between the chill, ambient vibes of vaporwave and the power and kinetics of trap music. But now, for today’s episode. We will be exploring the subgenere of mallsoft once again.Mallsoft, in case you didn’t know, is a subgenre of vaporwave that takes mall muzak, reverbed and washed out to create a lucid dream like feel, as though you are actually walking through the virtual plaza.Today’s album is a mallsoft banger that goes by the name of High Fashion. This album by Leisure Centre is an ambient artist from the Toronto label Adhesive Sounds. This album takes us on a journey to a hazy, lucid dream. In this dream, we stay in a relaxed, calm, hypnotized state, moving to different areas of this mall and just losing ourselves completely to sounds of a utopian ambience. You’re just going to have to listen with us to see what we mean.Let’s set sail for Leisure Centre’s High Fashion.

Building a Better World by Cat System Corp and Telepath. We have done episodes on both of these artists in the past and we highly recommend you check those out whenever you can. This album takes the dystopian ambience that has become a vaporwave trope and transforms it into something positive, beautiful, and spaciously vast. The combination of Cat System Corps’s Mallsoft acumen with Telepath’s polymathic ambient powers creates a stunningly fresh take on the genre that shows where the ambient world of vaporwave can go next.Join us, and let’s set sail for the metropolis of Telepath and Cat System Corps’ Building a Better World.

IntroductionLate last month I started messing with the idea of putting together a special episode to celebrate 6 years of Business Casual the Vaporwave sub-genre label. Then I started talking to MiddleClassComfort about it and to really make this idea a reality we decided to collaborate to create this excited anthology based on one of the biggest labels in our scene, Business Casual. The video is an accompaniment to a multiple part series we both will release regarding some of the artists on the label. So as this project was so large, we are releasing the headline video “The History of Business Casual” on both of our channels. Below will be a more detailed written out show notes for the above youtube video. In the following weeks, MiddleClassComfort and I will be releasing some deep dives on some of the artists of Business Casual on our own separate channels. So go subscribe to MiddleClassComfort or myself on youtube to stay up to date. Credits:– Audio Editing: MiddleClassComfort– Video Editing: KITE0080 / Musics the Hang Up– Music: Thanks to all the artists who allowed us to use their music on this video with permission. (we always ask permission). The History of Business CasualBusiness Casual was started by John Zobele May 10th, 2013. He had been working on music in the vaporwave scene but had no luck getting on the few labels that existed. Out of fustration after no hearing back from Fortune 500, a debunked vaporwave label since 2015, he decided to start his own label. Over the past 6 years he was able to release his own music on Business Casual under the various aliases; Christtt, Cordless Soul Machine, stab something, and Bye-Product. Even supporting some of the songs originally sent to Fortune 500 that ultimately become his most popular album Frasierwave. but that’s only a small part of the Business Casual history, the artists, the cassette releases and ability to form such a rooted label starts with one release, Digital Office One.Digital Office One was digitally released on Business Casual on May 10, 2013 the founding date of the label. What makes the release interesting was the idea of releasing a compilation of various artists Zobele knew, “I wanted to start off the label with something big that i could get a bunch of people interested in the label at the same time, I had some friends on soundcloud and asked them to contribute a track and the rest is history.”And the friends he had? Turns out would be some of the most influential in the scene, names still known today; b o d y l i n e, DeLorean.88, architecture in tokyo, Miami Vice and others. The release worked and soon enough we started seeing new releases from various artists throughout the year. Some including マクロスMACROSS 82-99, bl00dwave, Windows 96 and Ursula’s Cartridges. Leading to not only sticking to traditional Vaporwave but turning the label into Future Funk, Nu Disco, Mallsoft, and other sub genres. These days we are all too familiar with the idea that every Friday at noon a new artists and new album will come out of Business Casual, usually on cassette. But that didn’t occur until the second anniversary, with the release of Anniversary Vol.2, then the start of weekly cassettes become a fan favorite. Then the idea of BizBoxs, themed monthly releases of 3 cassettes, posters and more. Year after Year, Months after Months John Zobele was releasing cassettes made from his hands. From 2013 to 2016 over 2100Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/musicsthehangup)
Desert Sand Feels Warm At Night – Slushwave ArtistInitially I had never heard of anything like Desert Sand Feels Warm At Night (Desert Sand) in the vaporwave scene, yet I was seeing his cassette, name and music passed around throughout the community. So when I started listening to his music, the long 20 minute tracks, the slow ambient feel and the mysterious long artist name caught my attention in more than one ways. I knew I had to interview him to find out more of this force of musical nature and learn more about how he became so big.Turns out not even he knows how he was able to become such a house hold name in the scene but he does have tips for what worked for him in the early days of being a vaporwave artists. We talked about how he found his sound, when to contact labels and how to improve when you’re not getting any listens. Can’t you believe at one point he barely had 1 listen in the beginning?sparkling water – coming to vinylOne of his most popular albums, sparkling water, will be releasing with Palm ’84 on May 1st, 2019 on vinyl (Which is literally tomorrow if you’re viewing this interview on release). The great news is although originally it was only going to be 100 copies, it has been announced that they are going to release it under a 24-hour unlimited pre-order. So buy yourself one, a friend and your mom because this might be the last time we see this on vinyl. And how can you don’t get one with such a cool blue vinyl record look it has.If you haven’t had a chance to listen to the album yet you can take a preview on bandcamp until the vinyl goes live. but make sure to check back on the Palm ’84 bandcamp as that’s where the album will be released on vinyl.Follow Musics the Hang Up:Twitter: https://twitter.com/musicsthehangupinstagram: https://instagram.com/musicsthehangupWe are also on iTunes Podcast where you can find this episode and more just like ithttp://musicsthehangup.com/itunes----Find all interviews and weekly updates here:https://instagram.com/musicsthehangupSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/musicsthehangup)

# Description In 2013, two short years after it first appeared on the internet, Vaporwave was declared "dead". And yet, it still lives and has spawned a brood of micro-genres (Simpsonwave, Zeldawave, Glo-Fi, Mallsoft) in 2019. And what about the fans? Somehow, we try to tackle what this music is and figure out the people behind it. ## Episode Outline **Topics:** What is Vaporwave?, Is it a joke?, An internet micro-genre that seems to be constantly changing, Earnestness versus irony, pretentious art ideals versus memes ### First Impressions #### Z: When I first stumbled across Vaporwave, I was shocked by how evocative of some sort of nostalgia it was. Which is strange because I never was much of a mall rat, or spent a lot of time in places that played heavy muzak. And yet, there's a strange atmospheric quality to the music that reminds me of listening to a warbly radio from the bottom of a swimming pool -- which is still weird because I have never done that before in my life. #### T: I know next to nothing on this. I assumed that Vaporwave was some obscure genre of music that was facet of a facet of some genre I still couldn't pin down. #### G: I thought it was a fun meme thing where everything looks bad intentionally. ### Observations We really got caught up on the question of whether any of this stuff was earnest or just an enormous joke. Z especially took up the former position, saying (perhaps a little tongue in cheek) that Vaporwave is all about being a postmodern look at postmodern irony. G and T, on the other hand, kept pretty firmly in the "nah, in 2019 this is more of a meme" camp. ### Conclusions In the end, all three of us admitted to enjoying Vaporwave of some form or other (future funk, the first few albums, Hong Kong Express). T and Z in particular noted how they found the genre much more immediately emotionally evocative than a lot of other music, while G admitted to really getting into the philosophy, narrative and symbolism that can be found in the genre. But, none of us became hardcore Vaporwave fans after our limited exposure to the genre -- so go ahead and give the Macintosh Plus (aka Vektroid) album "Floral Shoppe" a listen! ## Where can you find us?
