TVC 688.1: TV Confidential remembers longtime radio host, author, recording artist, and game show legend Wink Martindale (Gambit, Debt, Tic Tac Dough, Winking at Life, “Deck of Cards”) with a special program-length tribute to the man who became synonymous with the words “emcee” and “host.” Wink Martindale passed away on Tuesday, Apr. 15, 2025 at the age of ninety-one. In this segment, Steve Beverly, retired professor of broadcast journalism at Union University in Jackson, TN (the hometown of Wink Martindale), game show historian, and the host of Steve Beverly's TV Classics, talks to Ed about Martindale developed his skills as a “quality ad-libber” early in his career by doing play-by-play for high school sports broadcasts; how he was often a de facto producer on the set of his game shows, always adapting to changing conditions in the format of the game (particularly in moments when things when awry); and why, unlike most broadcasters, Martindale was never afraid to take a risk by going to a bigger market. Steve Beverly recently re-aired Wink Comes Home, a 90-minute special that he hosted in November 2007 at Union University in which Wink discussed his life and career and took questions from the studio audience, as part of Steve Beverly's TV Classics. That episode is now available for viewing on demand on your smartphone, tablet, or laptop by going to EPlusTV6.com or, if you have the PBS app, typing in West TN PBS, where you'll find Steve Beverly's TV Classics on the drop-down menu of Local Shows.

ONE user flow is better than branching journeys.4) The NORTH STAR METRIC changes everything. For each app, Hunter picks ONE metric that matters above all:• Wink: % of users getting a match on day 1• NGL: % sharing link + replies• BAGS: % funding account + making first tradeAim for 90%+ completion!5) GROWTH HACK: Build sharing into your core experience!"If you drop in 1000 people and 50% share, that's 500 people who've now shared your app"Hunter spent less than $10K marketing NGL to get 250M downloads! The key? Seed it just enough to activate the viral loop.6) You DON'T need to reinvent the wheel!Hunter on NGL: "Anonymous messaging apps have been around forever"The innovation? Using Instagram's new link feature as a growth channel.Look for EXISTING IDEAS that could work in NEW CHANNELS.7) On SEEDING your app:• Test content formats before launch• Work with creators in different niches• Pay small amounts ($50-100) to influencers• Look for that ONE viral video to ignite growth• Build an authentic voice on social8) TRENDS to watch according to Hunter:• Live Activities on iPhone (underutilized)• Lock screen widgets (not fully explored)• AI + consumer apps (CalAI's approach)• Crypto going mainstream• AR glasses (future)Massive opportunities in each!9) For YOUNG FOUNDERS, Hunter recommends:"Take a lot of swings. Have a lot of at-bats."Consumer mobile apps over B2B/SaaS when starting out:• More fun• Reach global audience• Better psychology understanding• Tools getting better every dayNotable Quotes:"I think that it's more about looking for frameworks than it is for looking for ideas. The framework, I feel like, is more important because now it's really easy to just framework X with audience Y." - Hunter Isaacson"You don't really need to reinvent the wheel... it's a new channel, right? If anonymous messaging has worked on the internet, it's worked on apps, it's worked on different platforms, why wouldn't it work with Instagram as the growth lever?" - Hunter IsaacsonLCA helps Fortune 500s and fast-growing startups build their future - from Warner Music to Fortnite to Dropbox. In this episode, we explore the life and career of Kenney Jones, the legendary drummer who played a crucial role in shaping the sound of British rock music during the '60s and '70s. From his early days with The Small Faces, through the raucous years with The Faces, to his tenure with The Who, Jones's rhythmic prowess and adaptability made him a sought-after musician in the evolving rock landscape.Born in Whitechapel, London, Kenney Jones grew up immersed in the vibrant music scene of post-war Britain. Influenced by the burgeoning British Invasion, Jones was drawn to the energetic rhythms of bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, as well as the soulful sounds of American R&B. His early exposure to these genres laid the foundation for his distinctive drumming style, characterized by a blend of precision and flair. In 65, Jones co-founded The Small Faces alongside Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane, and Jimmy Winston. The band quickly became emblematic of the Mod movement, delivering hits like "Itchycoo Park," "Tin Soldier," and "All or Nothing." Their music, a fusion of psychedelic rock and soulful melodies, resonated with a generation seeking a fresh, dynamic sound.Jones's drumming provided a solid backbone for the band's intricate arrangements. The Small Faces' influence extended beyond their music, impacting fashion and youth culture in '60s Britain. The departure of Steve Marriott in '69 marked a turning point for the band. The remaining members—Jones, Lane, and keyboardist Ian McLagan—joined forces with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood, both from the Jeff Beck Group, to form The Faces. The Faces quickly gained a reputation for their electrifying live performances and unpretentious style. Albums like "A Nod Is As Good As a Wink... to a Blind Horse" and "Ooh La La" captured their energetic spirit and musical prowess. Rod Stewart's simultaneous solo career, particularly the success of "Every Picture Tells a Story" and the hit single "Maggie May," brought additional attention to The Faces. However, this dual focus eventually led to tensions within the group. The Faces' blend of rock, soul, and blues, combined with their charismatic stage presence, earned them a devoted fan base. Tracks like "Stay with Me," "Cindy Incidentally," and "Ooh La La" became anthems of the era, showcasing the band's versatility and Jones's dynamic drumming.Despite their success, internal tensions and the members' individual pursuits led to the band's dissolution in '75. In '78, following the death of drummer Keith Moon, Jones was invited to join The Who. His tenure with the band included contributions to albums like Face Dances and It's Hard, as well as performances at significant events such as Live Aid in '85.While his drumming style differed from Moon's, Jones brought a steady, reliable rhythm to the band's music during a period of transition. His professionalism and experience were invaluable assets to The Who during this time.Beyond his musical endeavours, Jones authored an autobiography titled "Let the Good Times Roll: My Life in Small Faces, Faces, and The Who", providing an in-depth look at his life and career. Kenney Jones's contributions to music have been recognised with inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of both The Small Faces and The Faces. His influence continues to inspire musicians and fans alike, ensuring his legacy endures in the annals of music history.Join us as we delve into the remarkable journey of Kenney Jones, exploring his impact on British rock music and the enduring legacy of The Small Faces, The Faces, and The Who. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to his story, this episode offers a comprehensive look at one of rock's most influential drummers.#thesmallfaces #thefaces #thewho #britishinvasion

Never.Definitely not at 11pm in a drive-thru.Wink.But if—hypothetically—you ever had one of those crispy golden fries from a certain global mega-chain… that potato was his.The Russet Burbank.Yes, the most widely consumed, industrially farmed, French-fried starch in America—the very potato that helped launch an empire of deep-fried convenience—came from this man.The man who sat on cacti, whispered to daisies, and believed that plants had personalities. The Man Behind the Big FryHe didn't work in white coats or test tubes. He used pruning shears, a notebook, and something deeper—a felt sense of communication with plants. In the early 1900s, ranchers in the American Southwest had a problem:Cattle were starving during droughts. So they chewed on prickly pear cactus—and ended up bleeding from the mouth.Burbank heard about it.He didn't just study the cactus. He spent years with it.Talking to it. Observing. Loving it.Trying to understand the will of the plant itself.“The secret of improved plant breeding... is love.” — Luther BurbankHe bred hundreds—hundreds—of Opuntia specimens.Until one day, the cactus responded. No spines.Just soft, fleshy pads—safe for cattle. And edible by humans. To prove it?He sat on one. In front of a crowd. And just smiled. Please Share this Article on any Groups you Frequent Online… More Need to Know this Truth. Thank you! What Made Burbank DifferentHe didn't just manipulate plants—he partnered with them.He believed they had memory. Emotion.Even a kind of intelligence. He treated each one as a unique individual. He refused to follow rigid scientific protocols.Instead, he spent hours—days—walking his gardens, whispering encouragement, noting every leaf twitch, every color shift, every scent change.Sometimes he'd wait 10 or 15 years just to see if a single cross would bloom the way he dreamed.“I am not making new things... I am helping nature express herself better.”That wasn't just his philosophy. It was his entire practice.A Saint Among the RosesAnd people noticed.Paramahansa Yogananda, one of the most revered spiritual teachers of the 20th century, met Burbank—and was so struck by his presence that he dedicated Autobiography of a Yogi to him.Not to a swami. Not to a sage.To a gardener.“A saint amidst the roses,” Yogananda called him.Their connection wasn't casual—it was soul-level.On a walk through Burbank's Santa Rosa garden, Yogananda heard the words that captured the essence of the man:“The secret of improved plant breeding, apart from scientific knowledge, is love.”They stopped beside a bed of edible cacti—yes, the famous thornless kind—and Burbank elaborated:“While I was conducting experiments to make ‘spineless' cacti,” he said, “I often talked to the plants to create a vibration of love. ‘You have nothing to fear,' I would tell them. ‘You don't need your defensive thorns. I will protect you.'”And the cactus listened. That's not metaphor. It actually dropped its spines. The plant changed its biology in response to trust.Beyond Biology—Into RelationshipThis is the core of Burbank's genius:Not just biology, but relationship. He didn't dominate nature. He collaborated with it.Listened. Adapted. Guided.Yogananda was so moved by this communion that he asked for some cactus pads to grow in his Mount Washington garden. When a workman stepped in to help, Burbank stopped him.“I myself will pluck them for the swami.”That's who he was.A Walnut Tree, a Twinkle in His EyeHe went on to show Yogananda a walnut tree that took just 16 years to produce an abundant harvest—a process that should've taken twice that time. With a twinkle in his eye, he described the possibilities—for both plants and people—when guided with care and intention.“The most stubborn living thing in this world... is a plant once fixed in certain habits... The human will is a weak thing beside the will of a plant.”But with love and patient attention, even that will could be shifted.“When it comes to so sensitive and pliable a thing as the nature of a child,” he said, “the problem becomes vastly easier.”Burbank saw humanity as one vast garden. And he believed that what worked in the soil...could also work in the soul.More Than Just WooSo yeah—maybe it all sounds a little woo.Talking to plants. Believing they respond to love. But then again…He gave us over 800 new plant species. He shaped modern agriculture. He gave us the potato that fed the world—and powered fast food empires. And still, that wasn't what moved him most.He and Yogananda spent hours dreaming about the future—not just of plants, but of people. They traded thoughts about education, Eastern and Western wisdom, yoga, reincarnation, mysticism. They even brainstormed the name of a magazine together.(They landed on East–West, naturally.)And Burbank wasn't just philosophizing from the sidelines. He took initiation into Kriya Yoga from Yogananda—and practiced it with devotion.“Sometimes I feel very close to the Infinite Power,” he told Yogananda, quietly. The Human SeedWhat stirred him more than a better walnut tree or thornless cactus...was the human seed—the potential in a child. He believed, as Yogananda did, that a new kind of education was needed:One that honored nature.Cultivated inner growth.Treated kids like whole people—not just data buckets.“Schools like yours are the only hope of a future millennium,” he said. That Vision Didn't Die With ThemMy wife Chiara helped start a school for our children and others based on those very ideals. It's called Piccolo Seme (Little Seed — in English)—originally rooted in the teachings of Yogananda, and in the same soil Burbank believed in.When the world was shutting down in 2020, and everything felt uncertain, that school became a lifeline for us—and for many families hungry for something more grounded, more joyful, more… real. And now, years later, I find myself still talking to plants in the garden.Still wondering what they know.Still trying to pass that spark on to my 10-year-old son—who usually just rolls his eyes when I get too mystical about my basil. But maybe someday, he'll get it.Maybe one day he'll feel what Burbank felt. That love isn't just something we feel—It's something we grow. And it grows back. What If...?What if the wildest ideas… aren't actually that wild? What if communion with nature isn't mysticism…but science we just haven't caught up to yet? What if you could learn to listen—really listen—to the life growing silently all around you?Burbank didn't just change plants. He changed the relationship we could have with them. And maybe…that's the part we're still catching up on.Let's talk more soon.Ray “Love Grows when we Plant Seeds” Lee BaconMore chapters of the Electroculture Foundations Guide are coming soon

On today's episode, I talk to musician and cartoonist Jeffrey Lewis. Originally from the Lower East Side, Jeffrey has bounced back and forth between his two loves comics and music for most of his professional life. As a cartoonist, Jeffrey's longest project was Fuff, which he wrote and drew from 2004 to 2020. He also created Revelations in the Wink of an Eye (My Insane Musings on Watchmen, from Conspiracies to Stupidities), and his most recent project is called Statics, which he started writing and drawing in 2022. As a musician, Jeffrey began as part of the New York antifolk scene that would play at the SideWalk Cafe in the 1990s. He released his first album When Madman Was Good - Version One in 1997, and four years later he was signed to Rough Trade, who released his first "official" album The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane. In Callan Wink's new novel Beartooth, two brothers live at the edge of Yellowstone National Park. Their father has recently died of cancer, leaving behind unpaid medical bills and taxes. Desperate to save their home, the pair ventures into the park as part of a scheme involving the illegal collection of elk antlers. The novel, Wink says, was inspired by a similar story he heard at a bar. In today's episode, Wink talks with Here & Now's Peter O'Dowd about the experience of living near Yellowstone, the impact of financial desperation on ethics, and the author's decision to write about brothers. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Send us a textThe 15:17 to ParisEpisode 6, all aboard! TGTPTU rides the Season 14 train to the end of the line of this third pairing of the season. Another rewatch of an Eastwood-directed film, this car was originally hitched to Season 1, Episode 3's engine and nearly derailed the podcast as it left the station back in the Year 2020, and that movie running again on time and Ken's first flick pick to redux is THE 15:17 TO PARIS (2018).  For a fuller recap of the plot and production of this film that stars comedic actors cast in serious roles and the three friends and heroes who aborted the mass shooting cast as themselves, listen to the original episode. But if you want to change tracks and discover the original cohosts Ken and Jack's sense of how the film has held up over time and for the two new-timers Ryan and Thomas's reactions of their first watch, along with re-imaginings of the film with Roseanne Barr and/or a Bob Dylan needle drop, this is your ep. Jack throws shade Tom Cruise's way at the top of the show while Thomas compares the movie to the book upon which it is based and which he'd recently read. Ryan has things to say about Christian rock and how to watch this film. Ken finds both relief in not having his fellow cohosts wrestle him to the ground and hogtie him for his pick and his shirt in the bathroom, which he puts back on.  While the shortest runtime of Eastwood's directorial oeuvre, the boys find the experience of watching this film warps time and space, perhaps even transcending the realm of movie, as Ryan and Jack claim, to a spiritual plane for motion pictures.  Next week, Tom and Ken's final rewatch picks are announced and paired. Spoiler: Both are Eastwoods with, like the third pairing, Eastwood directing and starring in a book adaptation for Ken's pick while the latter pick of Tom's also an adaption of book's true events. Wink-wink, nudge-nudge, bang-bang. THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!): Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

The co-authors of "Letters in Black and White" found common ground in their frustration with America's polarized racial discourse. Our conversation explored provocative ideas like "Blackness as oppression"—a concept that shook Wink's foundational beliefs about identity—and Jen's jarring return to an America where diversity training often stifled genuine dialogue. We challenged simplistic narratives of "privilege," examined the controversial topic of reparations (with Wink offering a compelling case for Black agency over victimhood), and questioned how society's racial scripts influence our thinking. Throughout our discussion, we highlighted the power of curiosity and personal storytelling to bridge seemingly insurmountable divides—inviting listeners to reconsider their own perspectives on race and identity in America.Winkfield Twyman and Jennifer Richmond are co-authors of Letters in Black and White: A New Correspondence on Race in America.A former law professor and current author, Winkfield (Wink) Franklin Twyman, Jr. is a southern writer from a small-town suburb outside of Richmond, Virginia. This week Jen & Wink speak with Susanna McIntyre about her transformation from Catholicism to Atheism, Antifa to Dissident, and an alignment with Preference Falsification that turned into a Preference Cascade. Susanna claims that her journey towards critical thinking was an “accident” but we find inspiration in Susanna's very intentional search for truth and the embrace of disagreement.

Watch Party: Basketball and Hockey tomorrow night.    Things Discussed: Lions: You can't hurt me. Oh they lost—we lost the DPOY and everyone else on the starting defense. They're taking our coordinators—when's the last time a Lions coordinator left for a head coaching job? Wink to Lions? Sounds like he's a tertiary candidate, most of the positions looking at him have been filled. Why aren't OSU's coaches candidates for better jobs? Brian Hartline only. Sam: Pro position coaches don't make more than college anymore (except Jim paid his guys to come with him); you go pro to get away from recruiting. Coordinators don't recruit as much anymore. Sherrone does a lot of the recruiting himself. If no Wink: the "internal" candidate is Doug Mallory. Les Miles's old coordinator, has recruited the SEC. Called the coverages vs OSU 2021-2023, called the coverages in the national championship. Waiting as DB coach for Ravens but might be the rare guy (older, played for Bo) who would retire here. Sam adds they'd be able to elevate someone to a "co-." Danger of losing Wink is he might pluck some of his guys. Good news is he's probably not going anywhere right now. Staff is pretty intact. Would like to establish some long-term guys. Wanted Elston to stay forever. Want OL recruits to be recruited 2 years by the guy who will coach them 4 years and still be here when they come back to visit in 4 years. Pantsless Championship: They want to call a 14-2 season the best ever? They're the worst champions ever. They went 1-1 against Oregon who had a better season. They lost their most important game, at home to Michigan. The commemorative ball has all the game scores on it. Sam's buying it. Playoff system: Can you imagine designing a system where Michigan and Ohio State are both happy at the end of the year? Hoops: Teams are learning to take away the roll. Minnesota game was a bit of a fluke—Goldin went 4/13 at the rim when he's been the best finisher in the B10 for the last month—but Northwestern went all in on it. Need to find ways to punish that, either with Wolf following Goldin into the lane or shooting an open three. Goldin: quietly Michigan's best player lately, despite 4/13. His threes open up the offense vs teams like Northwestern and their paint-bound truck driver. Purdue: Will be a different challenge because TKR can switch. Need defense to show up.
