GRAMMY® winner Club Nouveau, Timex Social ClubGrammy Award winning singer and music label executive, Jay King, was elected CEO/President of the California Black Chamber of Commerce (CBCC) in June of 2019.GRAMMY® Award winning Jay King/Club Nouveau's music & samples have been featured in many Soundtracks including the #1 Hit Movie "US" by Director Jordan Peele! This week, I look at how a brand can stay relevant decade after decade. As a veteran mogul Jay King brings as much humility to the field as he does what has been called his genius. With three decades of continuous achievements in music, management, film/TV/radio, consulting and publishing; King has made an indelible impression. He claims Northern California in general as his hometown due to a nomadic youth spent between many of the Bay Area's cities; as well as Alaska for birthing his career. There was a deep musical undercurrent added to his early years by a clan which boasted a number of ministers, extending from his great-grandfather through a number of cousins, who all played instruments as well. His great uncle, Saunders King, a respected jazz/blues guitarist, offered the West Coast the first family hit in the 1940's—‘The S.K. Blues'—adding to the musical backdrop of King's childhood. In 1986, King starting the independent record label JAY Records to release the Timex Social Club hit ‘Rumors' and ushered in the biggest selling single of 1986 (3.5 million copies) and becoming the #1 R&B single on the Billboard Charts. With a Top 10 single on the Billboard Pop charts for over 56 weeks, King watched his life change as his music became an unprecedented hit. What he'd produced was history-making, as nobody had before taken an R&B song from an indie label to such heights. Although having independently produced, pressed and marketed his own music King was without the money to compete at radio plays and had to be creative with promoting. “There were challenges. You couldn't reach out to stores, and social media didn't exist then so you couldn't let people know with a click of a button that you had something out. You had to get out and hustle. People were making fun of me and laughing because I was out hustling records.” Bypassing traditional methods, King utilized Macola Records because of its position as an indie manufacturer with no association to a major label.Such moves from a 24 year old entrepreneur made the year 1986 even more memorable, as he quickly followed up with a label/production deal with Warner Brother Records and his King Jay Records label, subsequently releasing the first Club Nouveau single ‘Jealousy' and the album, ‘Life, Love & Pain'. After ‘Jealousy' went to #8 on the Billboard R&B charts in September of 1986, followed by ‘Situation #9' (#4 Billboard R&B charts), 1987 came in with an even bigger bang when ‘Lean On Me' was released in February and became #1 Billboard Pop/#2 Billboard R&B platinum single, winning a Grammy for R&B Song of The Year.Club Nouveau's music is in heavy demand commercially in movies and is sampled in many of today's artists hit makers like Ashanti, Chris Brown and many more. The group is STILL on the scene, performing hundreds of LIVE concert a year & recording NEW music!© 2024 All Rights Reserved© 2024  Building Abundant Success!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy:  https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

This episode is sponsored by Better Help, an online therapy platform, offering 10% off the first month of therapy to listeners. The hosts also promote Bones Coffee Company, known for its unique flavors like maple bacon and chocolate raspberries, along with a range of merchandise options. So, whether you're looking to prioritize your mental health or upgrade your morning coffee routine, this episode has you covered. The Problematic Behavior of TX2: A Deep DiveUnpacking the Marketing Tactics of TX2The Disturbing Lyrics of TX2's SongsTX2: The Anti-Punk Rock ArtistDecoding the Controversy Surrounding TX2TX2's Problematic Behavior: The artist TX2 has faced criticism for his problematic behavior, which includes targeting individuals with smaller platforms, instructing them to harm themselves, and misgendering them. This behavior contradicts his claims of caring about mental health and creating a safe space for those in need to talk. Such actions are concerning, particularly when considering the impact they can have on vulnerable individuals struggling with mental health issues.Changing Meanings of Songs for Marketing Purposes: TX2 has been accused of altering the meanings of his songs for marketing purposes. An example cited in the episode is his song "Walking Dead Man," initially marketed as a tribute to his deceased friend who struggled with addiction. However, the song's meaning was later changed to convey a message of disdain for Christmas. This manipulation of song meanings for marketing purposes can be perceived as insincere and disrespectful, especially when the original intention was to honor a departed friend.Large Marketing Budget: TX2's music career is also criticized for having a substantial marketing budget that appears disproportionate to his current level of fame and success. This suggests that a wealthy record label may be behind his rise to popularity, seeking to capitalize on the trend of alt kids in the music scene. The blogger in the episode points out that this corporate backing and marketing strategy may not align with the anti-capitalist politics often associated with punk rock music. The focus on marketing and commercial success rather than genuine artistic expression can be seen as a departure from the authentic ethos of punk rock music. The podcast episode discusses the concept of industry plants, using TX2 as an example. TX2 is portrayed as a product of capitalism and corporations aiming to target the alt-kids demographic. The episode highlights how TX2, despite claiming to be punk rock and the future of punk, falls short of that image. The podcast points out that TX2's music leans more towards pop rock than punk, and his image and persona seem manufactured by a team of marketers rather than being authentic. The episode delves into the idea that TX2's success is not solely based on his talent or genuine connection with the alt-kids audience but rather on a calculated marketing strategy. The podcast suggests that TX2's substantial marketing budget, numerous writing credits, and constantly changing song meanings for marketing purposes indicate a corporate-backed approach to his music career. This approach is seen as contradictory to the anti-establishment and anti-capitalist ethos often associated with punk rock.

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersGolden Robot Global Entertainment is a worldwide brand that prides itself on being home to some of the most legendary bands and up-and-coming artists in the world. Starting with just one band in 2015, the company has expanded quickly to meet demand and spans a multitude of genres and styles. They are a truly global network, with bands such as Filter, Orgy, The Answer, Shepherd's Reign, Rose Tattoo and countless more on their successful roster. But there is much more to Golden Robot Records than meets the eye, with Mark Alexander, Golden Robot Global Entertainment Manager, joining HEAVY to tell us about some exciting new developments that will benefit musicians and artists of all levels of experience and stature."Golden Robot Records started nearly ten years ago now," he began. "It basically started because my son was on Australia's Got Talent - he was about nine at the time, he's 21 now - and he nearly won the show. Coming out of the show, we thought, we don't want him to be a novelty. We want him to have some sort of legacy. So we put him together with a couple of great guys and fantastic musicians - Steve Balbi was one of them - and they made this great album. They called it Orbiter and the band was called Moon. When I shopped that around, nobody was interested, nobody gave a shit. So I thought, you know what? I'm gonna do this myself. I'd given everybody a little present to thank them, a little golden robot, and when it was time to name the company we named it Golden Robot Records. We started off hard. We were signing some great bands in the States and Europe. I was working with Derek Shulman, who was the ex-president of Roadrunner Records, and him and I went along and got involved in quite a lot of things from about 2015, and we just kept growing. (but) this is a different year for us. We've had the hits and misses over the years. We've had some things that have gone to number one. We've had some things that have been a disaster, but that's the business. The good thing about being an Aussie and working in the global world is if you make a mistake, you can apologise and fix it and get on with it. If you're doing something well, we'll celebrate it with you. It served its purpose, and it served us well, and we've worked with some great bands. We've got global distribution through physical and digital - and we've just changed recently to an even better set up - great PR, great marketing people. My team today is the best it's ever been. We've had a few changes over the last six months, and I've got a really good team that just gets on with it. We're just in it for the music and to get the word out about Aussie music across the world. It's exciting."In the full interview, Mark tells us about the new developments at Golden Robot Records including Robot Distro, how to best get your music out there for mass consumption, what sorts of things a band should have done as a unit before seeking representation, how to successfully negotiate the music industry, how this all helps Australian bands and music, their new singing with rock band ORGY, future developments and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Michael Milosh (RHYE) is a lifelong musician from Toronto, Canada. He learned to play cello at 3 years old, having had a father who dedicated his life to teaching and playing music. RHYE is the musical project of Mike's that has garnered the most worldwide success, but as I reveal in this bath, I have been listening to his music since I was 18, when I first heard his song ‘The City' under the moniker, Milosh. In this bath, we uncover so much about how Mike makes music, why Mike makes music, and what music has unlocked in his life. Music is Mike's journal entries - but he only writes about positive things, things that he wants to bring into the world. In this sense, music is also spiritual and he aligns it with his spiritual beliefs. Often, he has found that his lyrics reveal some truth that already exists underlyingly, or will come true. In this episode, we learn about his songwriting process, and where songs come from. For example, the most recent RHYE EP, Passing, is specifically a dedication to his father, who passed away from cancer in 2022. In writing this EP about loving his father, Mike felt it was important to digest grief in the only way he knew how: writing songs. Grief was something he felt he was not alone in, and album became birdsongs to whomever might be feeling loneliness their own experiences of loss. We discuss loss and love in depth, speaking for the first time about our experience of being attacked online by his ex-wife, and how that has impacted our relationship and work. Mike shares about how we've deepened our understanding of radical self-reliance and how that plays into making art and putting it into the world. It is a story of resilience, and choosing to continue living a good life, in spite of what life throws at you. Mike talks about life and lemons, into lemonade. This tub talks is a joy for me to share because I get to sit with someone I admire and know intimately. I am excited to share his heart with you. Welcome to our tub!

Mike joins Jacob to talk about the label's growth and its connection to the gaming industry. "From a content creator standpoint, it really made its way through the ecosystem, because of the fact that the licensing frameworks are much simpler in dance music than they are in other forms and other genres. Barclay Crenshaw aka Claude VonStroke is a producer, DJ and label boss for top House music label, Dirtybird Records. As I said to Claude when I first reached out to him, Dirtybird Records is so inherently psychedelic. From the music, to the art, to the self-expression, to the outright permission for play, Dirtybird pushes the envelope and refuses to be boxed in -- in true psychedelic fashion.  During this episode, we discuss the following topics:  - The journey of creating Dirtybird Records -- one of the top House music labels. - Discussion around Rave Culture and how Claude balanced the party scene as a touring DJ. Plus how DJing differs for him now that he's sober from everything.  - Claude's wild weekend in Ibiza. Hint: He ran through a forest and found Ricardo Villalobos DJing in a cave. - Staying true to yourself as an artist -- even if it's not the most popular decision.  - Dirtybird Campout -- when a music festival meets summer camp.
