Bo reflects on past memories and experiences. The Godlike Player breaks the assertion between mind, body, and spirit of the opponent. Round One FIGHT! Strategic Thinking for Fighting Games is a video game fighting genre composition by American gamer, strategist and philosopher Patzer99. Focusing on the principle of outsmarting an opponent mentally before, during, and after the virtual battle, these timeless strats can be seen as the linchpin in all of the most inspiring matches in both the western and eastern FGC, and can still be a source of inspiration today in competitive arenas such as politics, business, sport and modern warfare. Patzer99 was born in the Baltimore city arcades scene of the late 80's and 90's, during the birth of the fighting game genre in America. Best known for his battles in Super Street Fighter II and Tekken 3, he is also a legendary strategist and philosopher of all fighting games such as Street Fighter V: Championship Edition, Tekken 7, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, Soulcalibur VI, Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st], Samurai Shodown, Mortal Kombat 11, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. Melee .

This week's guest is Alex Stoitsiadis from Dogleg. The Detroit-based band has earned oodles of listener attention and critical acclaim with the release of Melee, their debut album that had the unfortunate distinction of coming out the same day the world essentially shut down. After 18-plus months of pandemic-related inaction, Dogleg is finally ready to get out there to play in belated support of that outstanding record. A few days after turning heads at the Pitchfork Music Festival and a few days prior to setting out on a lengthy U.S. fall tour (including a Sept. 24 stop at X-Ray Arcade!), Stoitsiadis spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about the long road to the breakout record's release, the surprising response the album received and some exciting things that are on the horizon for Dogleg now that they can actually play live again. Of course, the conversation also turned to Stoitsiadis' musical past, including the role video games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero had on his musical exposure, meeting his future bandmates at a School of Rock camp, drumming in a duo called Sleeping Pilots in high school, and his decision to start a solo endeavor the world now knows as Dogleg. Along the way, Stoitsiadis and Maas also talked about their shared love of the band Bear vs. Shark. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Dogleg ("Modern Language").
CAPTAIN'S LOG: We have crash landed on an alien planet, the various parts of our craft have been scattered amongst the foliage. For awhile we were able to scrounge up the necessary resources we needed to survive but at around the two week mark our inspiring story with themes of determination and grit quickly transformed into a tragedy. Joe was the first to go, a bird sprouting from the ground as if it were a root vegetable being plucked from the earth and wrapping its mighty beak around Joe's soft frame. Matt went soon afterwards, chased down and devoured without hesitation by one of those damned Bulborbs. David was able to last a few more days but alas, he too met his end when a stupid frog broke every bone in his body with a body slam. All this death really makes you wonder: if they're all gone then who the hell is hosting this episode of the show? You know, the one covering Smashterpiece #37: Pikmin? It's the episode guest starring David (DVD Smith) where they talk about Joe's first experience with the game, the pseudo RTS style gameplay, the many many Pikmin corpses left in their wake, and of course how pleasant the soundtrack is to listen to. This may be a mystery that'll never be solved, but hey at least we have an episode that came out of it!Join us next time for a special episode on the second game in Nintendo's beloved crossover fighter: Super Smash Bros. Melee

In season 2, episode 4, we discuss possible futures for competitive escape room playing with the King of Smash, Ken Hoang. Ken was the world champion of Super Smash Bros. Melee for five years and helped create much of the high level competitive gameplay. Ken was also an extremely strategic player on Survivor: Gabon. Smash Melee was originally designed as a party game, not for competitive play. However, by exploiting glitches and mechanics that were built into the system, whether intentional or not, Ken was able to develop an expressive and unique style within Smash Melee, and become a top competitive player. This same strategy of exploitation has caused much of the recent evolution in Survivor. With this perspective, we discuss whether there is room for competitive play in escape rooms, and what that evolution could look like. Episode 4 is a bit of a smashup mashup, but it was fascinating to look at escape rooms through a competitive lens.
