It's been a tough week for the vinyl subscription service Vinyl Me, Please (VMP). A week so rough, that many are questioning their longevity + survival. Our panel talks about some of these latest hiccups, as well as visits the history of the company, their evolution to becoming the premiere vinyl subscription company in the marketplace, and will these latest missteps - coupled with ongoing litigation, declining subscription rates, and yet another price increase - seal their fate? Will they join former subscription competition like Qrates and Bandbox in the vinyl graveyard? Welcome to part two of this two part episode with Metic.Today's guest is Metic, a producer who fuses soulful guitar grooves with laid-back hip-hop beats. His playing is rooted in blues and finger-style guitar and his productions are informed by 90s boom-bap, G-funk, and trip-hop. A frequent collaborator, the Brooklyn-based, Hong Kong native continues to draw inspiration from both cities. This is showcased in his album release: Thoughts on Home and Symmetry, which documents his life and travels across his home and hometown. In Part Two of this two-part conversation, we discuss:- Quality versus quantity as it pertains to relationships.- Metic's experience releasing vinyl using crowdfunding through Qrates as well owning the process independently.- The three major categories of work as an artist and how to approach allocating your energy across each one.- Managing expectations in a way that allows you to maintain forward motion.- And, a reminder that you don't have to be good at everything in order to succeed.By the way…If you haven't already, I invite you to listen to Part 1 of this conversation for additional context as some topics re-emerge and develop.Top 3 Gems From This Convo:1. The Craft Is At The Core.Today's artist is expected to take on many responsibilities beyond the making of the art. However, it is important to find a way to be sure you are prioritizing what is at the heart of what you do: make art.2. Learning To Say No.This we know: It isn't possible to do everything. So, when an opportunity arises that is not aligned with your goals, outside of your capacity, or simply uninteresting, it's OK to say no.3. You Don't Have To Be The Best At Everything. As mentioned in Podium #5, “Success Occurs In The Privacy Of The Soul.”Assess your talents and abilities as objectively as possible. Do what you can with what you have. You're lack of knowledge or skill in one area does not necessarily prohibit success.Remember: A skill is not a static quality, but a learned and dynamic ability that changes based on the attention we invest.Listen on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube.Tap in with toru:Substack: Instagram: @torubeattiktok: @torubeatTap in with Metic:Instagram: @meticmusicTo jump to a specific moment in the conversation:0:00 Intro 2:22 All Terms Are Negotiable 4:30 Quality v. Show Notes: http://videogamegrooves.com/2022/01/31/episode-91-final-fantasy-viii-battletoads-smash-hits/ We're back for 2022, perhaps a little bit sleepy, but hibernation can do that to you. Jeremy, Anthony, and Caleb are kicking off the new year with a giant spiked boot and a cool Squall Leonhart necklace. (Yeah, we know.) We are ready to return to the days of slow MIDI beats to study to with Final Fantasy VIII from Square Enix, extracting a few thematic elements from the generally well-liked Uematsu score, and putting them on the turntable for all to see. Redbook audio? Who needs it?? And who in the Final Fantasy universe is the Vin Diesel analog from The Fast and the Furious? We move it along to a much earlier (and also much later) era with Battletoads: Smash Hits from iam8bit. We discuss a bit of the origins of the franchise with David Wise's not-actually-heavy-metal leanings in the 80s, and run through the weird and warty history up to Battletoads (2020). David Housden expertly weaves many metal threads together into a simultaneously self-aware but genuinely great metal album... along with some calliope music. We look at the new releases that have come out or been announced in January, and the list is not too bad and generally pretty encouraging! We also put down some predictions for 2022, including production and industry matters, the kinds of releases we expect to see, and we toss a few out-loud wishes into the podcasting ether to see what comes back to us. Outro: "Balamb Garden" - Nobuo Uematsu, Final Fantasy VIII Twitter – @vg_grooves, @jeremy_lamont, @ch3records Caleb's other prediction is that game music vinyl labels will be releasing a lot of other kinds of "merch" this year. Does Selling Vinyl Make Financial Sense for Independent Artists?

It's common knowledge that vinyl sales have been steadily rising for the last decade or so, with 2021 being another record year for vinyl in Canada with 1.1 million records sold. And it isn't just boomers buying another copy of Abbey Road. Current artists of all genres are learning that vinyl is a reliable revenue stream and that there is high demand for it among young superfans. But does it makes financial sense for independent, emerging artists to sell their new music on vinyl? And, if so, what are the upfront costs, production timelines, personal time commitment, profit margins, and so on associated with it? Those are the questions Mike digs into this week across a pair of interviews. First, Mike chat about selling vinyl with artist manager Liam Killeen (5:25), who represents major indie artists like Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker (USS) and The Tea Party. Next, Mike chats with Taishi Fukuyama (37:10), the co-founder of Qrates, a vinyl crowdfunding platform and end-to-end solution for artists and labels that need short run and on-demand vinyl. If you're an indie artist, or work with indie artists, and have thought about selling vinyl, this is the show for you.

Here at Video Game Grooves we are not above admitting our mistakes, and we do our best to rectify them. This episode we rectify the error of omission as Rozen comes back to the show after a "mea culpa" amount of time way back on Episode 21 when we were just a baby podcast. Well now as a bratty teenage podcast we slouch and kick a rock, and finally get him back on for you. To make up for lost time we are covering not one but two of his awesome vinyl releases. First up, Anthony returns us to that old Nier well with Nier: Glory to Mankind. Of course we talk about the music of Keiichi Okabe but also the dovetail with the "gravitas" of the Rozen+Reven adaptation, as well as the vocals on every single track, and what it takes to deliver on what Nier musically promises. Jeremy ends up humblebragging about the re-release variant he snagged. We continue with the more recent release of The Keyblade War, Rozen and vocalist Reven's adaptation of the inscrutably-storied Kingdom Hearts franchise, and whether it was easier or harder to match up with the iconic music of Yoko Shimomura. Everything has meaning in this release, and we get just a taste of that in our listening party today. We continue with the new releases and make a few harsh judgments over here and a few drooling hype statements over there... but ultimately we let you decide where to spend your money (links below as always) and we finally discuss the weird time-delayed climate of video game music on vinyl record, including some production insights from Rozen who also does some design work at Materia Collective, and he even pulls out the crystal ball for one or two predictions about what fans can expect in the future from the "hurry up and wait" situation we've been experiencing over the past year. Trust the power of feelings and friendship and enjoy this one! We also discuss spinoffs and sequels, as well as our favorite remix albums. Next Jeremy dons his synesthesia suit to discuss Rez Infinite, from iam8bit. With the power of an archival codex in his hands, he guides us through the Rez experience to our happy place with a few anecdotes about the game's development, art, and music, while Matt and Anthony dig into their memory banks for some added context and a Lawnmower Man reference. Paul swoops in to handle the news and releases, and they are INNUMERABLE. Well, there are a bunch, and Jeremy and Paul (mostly Paul) flesh out the context and the damages for the last couple of weeks and give you the goods about the goods you need to get. Finally, we talk about the heartbreaking side of collecting video game music on vinyl. Sometimes it's "the one that got away" and sometimes it's we got what we asked for but it wasn't what we WANTED. So sad. Twitter - @vg_grooves, @walnutsoap, @jeremy_lamont, @ajohnagnello, @fortninety The Last of Us Vol 1 (Mondo) Kingdom New Lands (Fangamer) Forza Horizon 4 (Hospital Records) "The NES E.P." Download here on SoundCloud or visit cognitivemusic.com to listen, download, and view artist info. Code Rising is an American Electro duo that was formed in 2010 and consists of Matt Lancaster (South Carolina) and Ryan Phillips (South Florida). The duo formed after a few successful song collaborations. Over the years, Code Rising has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the EDM and Electro scene; performing live mainly in Miami and around the Florida coasts. After a healthy line of digital releases, 2013 saw the release of their first full-length CD "Dissemination Protocol" and was released on their own label, Propulsion Recordings. More recently, they have had two wax EP releases; "The Sequential Mind" and "Quantum Data Volume 1". The former being the duo's first solo wax record and the latter being a collaboration with Florida's own Analog To Future (Rich Hutchings). Presently, Code Rising is crowd-funding their new 4-track wax release, "The Mixer Fixer EP" through Qrates.com with a goal of 100 preorders that has to be met for the record to be pressed. If you would like to reserve your copy, please visit: https://qrates.com/projects/17098 Also, lookout for Code Rising's remix of the mighty Jackal & Hyde's "Bad Robot". The album will be dropping on the world renowned German label Dominance Electricity. Last but not least, if you want to hear all of Code Rising's material, check out their Soundcloud. Record labels are using crowdfunding sites such as Qrates as a presale tool to press vinyl. Additionally, FB Live Shows and iRadio Stations are using GoFundMe to support their shows and stations, while deejays are also using GoFundMe in order to purchase and/or replace deejay equipment. Your Video Game Grooves crew returns with new music to captivate and delight! In this episode, we are joined by Simon Jones of Minimum Records, to ride shotgun on our space-parkour journey through video games, vinyl records, video game music, and video game music on vinyl records. We begin, with somber yet adorable disposition, with Hollow Knight by Christopher Larkin and Ghost Ramp. This not-on-PS-Vita metroidvania roguelike has captured the hearts and imaginations of gamers across multiple platforms, including our own Anthony John Agnello. Anthony describes the game's style and vibe, and illustrates it with a couple of selections from the spooky-sad-cute score. Don't let any maggots near your records! We continue our high-speed topsy-turvy journey begins with Lightfield, from Minimum Records. This electronic, sometimes amelodic soundtrack by Zanshin, both challenges and enthuses us from a listening standpoint, and the presentation is oh-so-pretty! We explore the unique aspects of the game and the music it employs. Simon gives us a few insights into the production of this release and a few little details that make it special. We continue our discussion into the "omg now-time" of the gamemusicvinylverse, picking out some special releases of note, what's currently shipping, and what you should look forward to! Finally, we put Mr. Jones under the hot lights for a look at Minimum Records. This little indie label has some interesting beginnings, with a tie to one host's past! Simon tells us a little about his curation process, we ruminate on the "regionality" of record labels, and at the risk of his VERY LIFE, Simon lets us know one (and a half?) of his upcoming and heretofore unannounced releases. Episode #58: Without technological development, the music industry would be in a very different place. From the modulated grooves of analog records to the first iPod, innovation has permanently shaped the music business, but it's not always an easy process. In recent years, technology seems to be advancing faster and faster, with more companies popping up than ever, many of which are focused on music. Are these apps and startups, who aim to be artist-centric, actually helping creators? We ask user researcher and trade journalist Kyle Bylin and music tech launch and growth strategist Patti Silverman. We also talk to startup founders Bruce Pavitt and Adam Farish (8Stem) and Taishi Fukuyama (Qrates).
