Repentance was never meant to make you more selfishly sin conscious. It was always about coming to your senses, remembering where you belong, and drawing you out of your false identities back home to the heart of the Father. Sin hides the face of God behind a veil of illusion and delusion where all you can see is the good, the bad, and the ugly of you. Repentance is Metanoia, and rightly revealed, will open your eyes to the grace that can only be found in beholding the face of God in Jesus Christ. (Bill shoves the intern out of the way grunting, "I'm writing this one myself.") This podcast should be titled, "Exploring the Incarnation. Or "Caught in the Crossfire of Adoration." Or maybe, "Once adopted, always a Son." All of these would be better titles, but only a few hundred of you will listen if it's not named something ridiculous, stupid, or barely crossing the line of Christian decency. I hate clickbait titles because the people who aren't roped in by shock value will actually take the time to study with you and value what they're learning. "Pull My Finger" is a clickbait title for a world with the attention span of a gnat. But the revelation in this podcast is so life giving, that I went with it. Not that it doesn't fit. Oddly enough, in this particular conversation around a table of adults, it actually fits well. My Mom, in her 80's called me afterward to tell me that talking about gastrointestinal explosive bodily function is not appropriate when ladies are present. I reminded her that ladies fart too, and it wafts through the house like a day old diaper in a crock pot, and that's God's fault. All that aside, this may be the strangest conversation about Christmas you've ever heard, and yet it also may be one of the most moving. Do you believe that God needs to wipe out humanity to deal with all the sin in the world? You might remember from the Bible, that's been done before. Judgment and curses will never cure the sin problem. Only the cross and blood of Jesus Christ could do that. And it has. In 2 Peter 3 there is the warning of future judgment, so what are we to make of this in light of the new (Christic) covenant? That's what this podcast will deal with today. We're not proof texting here to fit a preconceived notion into a theological construct. I used to be a staunch dispensationalist, rapture seeker, and hellfire and brimstone preacher. It's amazing how a little study and education, and an encounter with the Holy Spirit, can expand your understanding of the goodness of God. But that requires swallowing your pride, admitting you were wrong, and seeing with new eyes the things of God you didn't understand before. Hanging out around a table feasting on the word of God with dear is one of my favorite things to do, and we do that quite often. You may have heard about the Hebrews Bible study through our incessant ad campaign  on social media. Sorry, not sorry. "I hear you're a universalist." I get this alot. Some people would rather speculate about someone than have a conversation with someone. And I understand. Conversations require courage. When your dogma is so fragile that all it takes to topple your belief is a different opinion, then avoiding conversations is the only way to keep your dogma on a leash. Hang on for this one. The revelation of your authentic identity imparts a supernatural peace that displaces darkness, dissolves stress, and dispels the lies and labels that have defined you for so long. Teenagers are brutal. Being a youth minister was one of the greatest joys and hardest assignments I've ever had. Just when you think that you've got everything about a life of faith together, a student comes in and asks an honest question and dismantles it all. Ahh, glorious mutilation. Today we look at the verses that deal with hacking, slashing, chopping, and cutting off of the flesh for religious glory. If you have fasted yourself into a health crisis, you probably weren't listening to God. Nice effort, but your kids would probably rather have a live dad rather than a dead disciple. Remember when Joshua had a whole family stoned in the Old Testament? "What do you do with that, mister grace guy?" A Pastor asked me this question on a Sunday morning in front of a live audience. The New Covenant is not about a transaction between you and God, but a transformation where who you were before is not who you are now. Living in freedom is great, but learning to manage that freedom is glorious. Where freedom management fails, we apply controls. It seems that controlling others, society, culture, and surroundings are far easier than controlling self. So we go the easier route. Just because God gave man the law, don't think that defines him as a lawyer. When there's a barrier between people, any connection needs to be spelled out in rules of engagement. Yet in the new covenant we have life, liberty, and love as the pulsing heartbeat that is the uniting rhythm of this temple. There's a mystery to be embraced about the rules of engagement that's every bit as magnificent as the majesty of his word. To lean in to understand this will enroll you in a school that will empower you in the....let's say it like this...new rules of engagement. The blood and violence that defined the old temple is now replaced by the glorious inheritance that all of that blood and violence paid for. The Bible is a record of the nature of the relationship between God and humanity, and we relate to God by His Spirit and the terms of that relationshiop are understood by covenants. Do you know which one we're under now? Do you know why the current covenant is called the better covenant? Do you know why the new one will never be broken? Do you know why the old covenants are no longer valid? You should. It matters more than you can imagine. Jesus accomplished all three roles necessary to finish the work on the cross. He was the great high priest who offered the sacrifice. He was the holy one on the throne who received the sacrifice. And he was the sacrifice itself. You and I are in the equation purely by his grace and that's how we are saved. The only thing necessary to receive salvation is faith. We have no faith of our own so we must ask God to give us the faith to believe and receive the grace of salvation. So even though we are invited into the process, we are not the source of any of the elements necessary for us to be saved.
