Please leave your comments and questions during the video! In this season 5 opening conversation, George Wood interviews Gio Munoz, the pastor of Abide Church, about his recovery journey and the importance of authentic community in the church. They discuss the challenges of leaving a recovery program and the struggles of navigating the church world. Gio shares his experience of feeling inadequate as a young leader and emphasizes the need for humility in leadership. They also touch on the reputation of Abide Church as a house of prayer and worship. In this conversation, Gio Munoz discusses the impact of the IHOP controversy on his leadership and the prayer movement. He emphasizes the importance of accountability and the need to prevent similar situations in the future. Gio also shares his perspective on the strategic nature of the devil's attacks and the lessons learned from the situation. The conversation highlights the significance of inner healing and the connection between healing and repentance. Additionally, Gio emphasizes the importance of creating an environment of vulnerability and transparency in leadership. The conversation concludes with a discussion on future plans for Abide and the focus on prayer and mission. Takeaways: Authentic confession and vulnerability are essential in the recovery journey and in the church. Leaving a recovery program can be challenging, and finding a supportive community is crucial. Leadership requires humility and a willingness to set aside personal ambitions for the sake of others. Building authentic community and valuing every member's contribution is vital in the church. A reputation for being a house of prayer and worship can be a powerful testimony to the community. Leaders should be mindful of the impact of controversies in their field and take steps to address any concerns or misconceptions. Accountability and transparency are crucial in preventing moral failures and maintaining the purity of a ministry. The devil strategically targets leaders and movements, and it is important to remain vigilant and rely on God's grace. Inner healing is essential for true repentance and transformation, and leaders should prioritize addressing the root causes of their behaviors. Creating an environment of vulnerability and openness allows for deeper healing and growth in individuals and the community. Future plans should focus on prayer, mission, and expanding the ministry to reach more people. George Wood and Charlotte Sometimes (freelance film writers) return to Flixwatcher to review Georges's choice Pom Poko. Pom Poko (1994) is a Studio Ghibli animation written and directed by Isao (Grave of the Fireflies) Takahata. Pom Poko is the story of tanuki, which in Japanese folk lore are magical shape shifting creatures, also referred to as Japanese raccoon dogs which has led to the incorrect translation of ‘raccoons' to the English version. The film opens in late 1960s Japan, a group of tanuki (raccoon dogs) find their natural habitat threatened by rampant suburban development. Fast forward to the 1990s and the tanuki are facing reduced resources and space and resorting to fighting with each other for survival. A group of elders come up with a strategy to take back their land that involves killing of humans and learning the art of shapeshifting. Testicles are also a prominent feature in tanuki traditions and they feature frequently in Pom Poko, if referred to incorrectly as ‘pouches' in the English dub. Your enjoyment of Pom Poko rests largely on your tolerance of testicles or your interest in their versatility in battling against environment destruction. Mixed recommendability and low repeat viewing scores, at nearly two hours it is a long animation, give Pom Poko an overall rating of 3.48. Charlotte Sometimes and George Wood (freelance film writers) join Flixwatcher to review Charlotte's choice Sicario. Sicario (2015) is the seventh feature film from director Denis Villeneuve. It stars Emily Blunt as Kate Macer, an FBI Special Agent recruited by Josh Brolin's Matt Graver, a CIA officer, as a technical necessity so the CIA can operate in Mexico, outside the US border. Benicio del Toro plays Alejandro Gillick, a former Mexican prosecutor turned assassin with a specialism in torture. Also starring in an early role is Daniel Kaluuya as Reggie Wayne, a rookie FBI Special Agent and Kate's partner. Sicario, Spanish for ‘hitman', features strong performances and some incredible but tense set pieces. It is not an easy watch, due to the content and the unrelenting bleakness. The cinematography by Roger Deakins and score by Jóhann Jóhannsson are highlights in the darkness of the content. Scores for recommendability reflected the harsh subject matter, it is a technical achievement but lacking in emotion and human connection. The love for Deakins and Jóhannsson also reflected the small screen scores and Sicario scores 3.63 overall. Every human experiences grief and sorrow. It's simply a part of life. Jesus himself was called a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. He knows what it is to grieve loss, to be betrayed and to cry out to the Father in agony and anxiety. I think the church has forgotten about this part of Jesus' life. Yes, he conquered death and the grave and is seated at the right hand of the Father, but he is also the lowly servant, who was mistreated, spat upon and sweat drops of blood in the garden. I think the church has done a disservice by overlooking these parts of Christ. Many church-goers have learned how to deny their emotions, rather than experience them. There seems to be a pressure to always have a smiley face on in church, otherwise you can be perceived as not being a “good Christian.” My friend, George Wood joins me again to talk about his grief and sorrow and how God found him in the midst of it all. In 1996 during a particularly dark time in my life I stumbled across some crazy sounds blasting through 4ft tall floor speakers (Remember those behemoths lol)... It was the band "Korn" and my musical taste was about to change forever! Funny how sound can change everything that your feeling inside (for better or worse) it is powerful unbelievably at times! Unknown by me at the time but as I was diving deep into addiction and depression so was the famous rock star coming through those outdated pioneer speakers. Brian "Head" Welch a founder and lead guitarist of the band Korn has lived a life of incredible highs, and lows and everything in between, then Jesus saved his life and forever changed the way he would live. He has gone on to become an incredible speaker for the gospel bringing hope to the lost and light in the darkest of places (including stadiums and theaters everywhere). We sit and have a conversation about drugs, depression, our faith journeys and what it means to follow Jesus in a way that speaks to people that need his voice! Brian is an amazing dude, who lives his life for the gospel every day and is an inspiration to thousands upon thousands of people, this is a great conversation that shows a side of him that he doesn't usually show in interviews, you don't want to miss it! George Wood is a revivalist who is awakened to the power of God to set the most hopeless addict free and launch them into a life of liberty and joy. I've seen him do it. George has written an incredible book called "the Uncovery" and if you or someone you know struggles with addiction, get this resource. But that's not what this show is about. Today we talk about what God is doing in the earth. Pay close attention to the part where we talk about protecting public moments of encounter with God from the critical gaze of a confused world. When God is moving deeply in a person's heart, put the camera down, and be present in the moment. Discovering the value of the secret place with God is a priceless lesson to learn. If you've been around Christian culture for any length of time, I'm sure you've experienced moments where you were going through something difficult and you were met with the cheap answer, "God's got this" or "just trust God." While people are well-intended with those statements, they don't actually invite us into deeper connection and the ability to bear with one another. Those type of simplistic answers can actually lead people into more confusion, frustration and shame. Aside from that, it has the potential to really distort the nature and character of God. In this episode, I'm joined with my friend, George Wood, once again, as he speaks from an authentic and raw way about he understands God being enough… or not. I'm joined with my friend, George Wood, to talk about his upbringing, which involved abuse, drugs, alcholism, multiple suicide attempts and sex addiction. He had an encounter with God that transformed his life, but then had to learn the ways of the church. Through lots of ups and downs, he has found a home, with a community of like-minded brothers. He is now a trauma consultant, speaker, author and a coach. He spends his days running multiple homes for guys who've flunked out of rehab. George Wood and Brit Eaton believe that our legalistic, box-checking, one-size-fits-all programs produce astonishingly high failure rates—which means far too many people are left to fight addiction, mental health problems, and suicidal thoughts on their own. So, they wrote a book (that will be released by the time you hear this episode), called, “The Un-covery”: Understanding the Power of Community to Heal Trauma. They believe that their book will help the church—and the world—see recovery through a grace-laced, gospel lens. George A. Wood is an ordained minister, pastoral care counselor, and a former addict turned recovery activist and founder of three different recovery ministries. And his co-author, Brit Eaton is a writer, speaker, discipler, adjunct professor, and strong advocate for nontraditional recovery and women in ministry. So this week, I decided to drop a 2nd episode! Today's discussion is with George A. Wood. He is the co-author of "The Uncovery," which comes on July 26th. This discussion was amazing from beginning to end! He was so open and willing to share every part of his story so that other people will know they are not alone in their own trauma. George understands the broken, the addicted, and the "lost" because he was one of them. Still remembering the thoughts he had first checking into a detox center: "People shouldn't feel so alone, ridiculed, and judged." Over the years, witnessing toxic help from both the Christian and secular communities—money wasted, lives lost, and damage done to the ones they were trying to help. Those struggling with addiction, mental health stuck in poverty, brokenness, disconnected from any form of hope lost in this cycle of desperation and despair all because the ones trying to help were lost themselves. He is involved in Pastoral Counseling and has 2 different organizations, The Timothy Initiative and The Sober Truth Project. He lives in Tampa, FL with his family. I cannot even begin to describe this episode to you! My guest, Brit Eaton, has such a powerful anointing that it overwhelmed me in the best way possible. Her testimony shows what happens when you have an authentic encounter with the Living God. We have been friends online for a long time, but when she put a post on her social media pages on June 3rd of this year, I knew she needed to be on this podcast. Our stories are congruent and because of that, I share about an experience I went through that some of the people closest to me don't even know about. This episode will encourage, challenge and inspire you in every area of your life, so go grab a notebook and a pen and stretch out your fingers to pause and rewind so that you don't miss a thing! About Brit: Brit is a writer, speaker, discipler, and all-around pursuer of the Kingdom of God. She helps corporate, nonprofit, and ministry leaders find the words to say to move people to action. An eager apostle and strong advocate for nontraditional recovery and women in ministry, Brit ministers in diverse, spirit-filled environments committed to unity in the Body of Christ. Brit is co-author of Reckless Grace, a book inspired by and developed with Bill Vanderbush and co-author of The Uncovery, a soon-to-be-released book inspired by and developed with George Wood. Brit lives in a log home on ten wooded acres in Mount Vernon, Ohio with her husband, Mike and daughter, Bella and they are a part of Reformation 1420, a decentralized group of Christian reformers. Have you ever been in therapy? What was it like? Did you feel like anything was accomplished? For many of us who have been in therapy it may have been a moment when our eyes were opened up and we became better people. For some of us we may not have had a great therapist and our therapy went to waste and it was just money down the drain. In this last of our 3-part series with George Wood, George reveals how he discovered a breakthrough way to counsel people. He also talks about his new book that he co-authored with Brittany Eaton, which is due to be released in July 2022. George A Wood is an ordained minister, pastoral care counselor, recovery ministry founder, and beloved child of a good-Father God. A former addict and suicide survivor, George has dedicated his life to radically grace-laced, Christ-centered recovery for people struggling with addiction, mental health problems, and suicidal thoughts. Along with helping people find the way to a whole life, one that is worth living for. That includes healing in all areas that a person may experience life altering trauma including race, class, education, relationships and the list goes on. #GeorgeWood #PneuPneumaGodcast #NormanBrown #PracticalAndSpiritualTherapy #Minister #Jesus #Cristiano #Dios #bible #God #wordliferadio #prayer #christian #podcast #KevinSamuels Please, give us a 5-Star rating and leave an Inspirational comment, if you are an Apple Podcast listener.
