Michael Gungor and his wife Lisa were pioneers in the Christian music scene, building a loyal fan base through Gungor's music and podcasts such as The Liturgists. However, Michael's recent turn towards an increasingly progressive, mystical and deconstructed interpretation of faith has left many Christians confused. In this episode Michael is joined by Christian songwriter and teacher, Evan Wickham as they break down many of the questions millennials and Gen Z'ers are facing today and what impact and interpretation, if any, this has on the church, modern theology and Christian music today. Michael Gungor talks about how he's been church shopping and how the Internet has reacted to it as well as his thoughts and feelings around this unexpected burst of cultural conversation
Sally Kempton (January 15, 1943 – July 10, 2023) was an American swami, author, and spiritual teacher. This interview with Michael Gungor from the final year of Sally's time on this planet covers a range of topics from the divine feminine to kundalini to trans-rational perspective. Michael Gungor was brought up in a very traditional expression of the Christian faith. If you've frequented contemporary churches, you've likely sang a song he wrote, "Beautiful Things." Multiple-Grammy Award nominated artist and at the peak of exposure in the Christian music industry about a decade ago, his music career unraveled due to an unraveling of his Christian faith. As Michael started to verbalize his doubts, churches and other christian venues cancelled show and many Christians "washed their hands" of Michael Gungor. Michael recounts some moments of those tough days, including some backstory of his career, reflections on how Christians handled his faith loss, and how 2023's older and wiser version of Michael would walk out that season if it unfolded today instead. He also shares some weaknesses, things in life he'd like to get better at, and schools us all on what the power of love can look like amidst social media wars and in the cancel culture so prevalent in today's society. At the top of the episode, Pastor Josh Surratt hangs with Lynne and Joey reflect on some of Michael's story, ponder how Christians treat those who lose their faith, and Lynne saved a puppy, which happened to belong to Joey's wife.Stay ConnectedWebsite | Facebook Discussion Page In this episodeMichael Gungor / Site / Spotify / Instagram Josh Surratt, co-host / Instagram Lynne Stroy, co-host / InstagramJoey Svendsen, co-host / InstagramExecutive Producer: Josh SurrattProducer/Editor: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: JT PriceSound Engineer: Katelyn VandiverMusic, theme song: Joel T. Join me for a raw, authentic, and profoundly beautiful conversation with Grammy nominated, Dove Award winning, musical prodigy, an semi-unintentional poster child for the modern deconstruction movement, Michael Gungor. If you've followed his journey at all, you know that the pendulum of his life swung from being a minstral for evangelicalism all the way to spending a year of his life as an atheist. Where is he now? Still walking. And so are you. The journey of finding rest in reconciled untion with God in Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit is a rich walk home. Walk together. How do we address deconstruction due to faith not aligning with a person's lived experience? What is the human's limitation when trying to conceive of their faith? This episode's guest is Sera Jayne! Sera is a musician, worship pastor, works with an up north sauna company, and is an absolutely beautiful human. Sera blew us away in this episode and you can tell by the energy we have throughout, how much this conversation inspires us. Sera speaks on their coming out journey and how deconstructing Christianity has led them to finding a new safe space in the form of a church. Andi and Mar share a bit about their own journeys with deconstructing Christianity and redefining what spirituality means to them. We discuss the illusion of comfort in having control, why change is so scary, and where that actually stems from systemically in our society. “Everything that's living is changing.” We ask questions like, are we meant to understand all the variables? How would it feel for us to just be okay with not having all the answers? What is Christianity or spirituality supposed to feel like? Sera offers a super great tip that involves 6 questions they choose to ask themselves when they are in a place where they are feeling anxious or out of control. Sera gives meaning to the root causes of the need for control in our society, specifically for white people; “the centering desire for control, is rooted in internalized colonialism,” and we decided we need an entire episode to talk deeper on this subject. Cally and Sera dive into their passion for music and how it relates to their lives spiritually. We get the honor of hearing some updates on music they are both gracing the world with very soon. “We are just music making music.” Sera shares: Michael Gungor & The Liturgists podcast Find Sera @sera.jayne on Instagram --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/solwomen/support

Does the concept of salvation have any use if we don't see it as a ticket to some other worldly existence after we die? Does the progressive notion of “freedom” that is so related to morality, justice, money, and power imply that we should all be more like Bezos or Trump? What is enlightenment and does anybody actually get to be enlightened? These are a few of the questions we tackle in this raw and powerful conversation between Michael Gungor, Emily Capshaw, and Mason Smith.
The Liturgists forms its first faux ecumenical theological council as Rev. Brianna Lynn, Mason Smith, Emily Capshaw, Latifah Alattas, Chris Davies and Michael Gungor have a fun, lively discussion about the Trinity and what, if any, value it has as a spiritual technology beyond the oppressive patriarchal usages that are so common historically.
Who or what is Satan? What is the nature of evil and what is the best way to interact with it in ourselves and in others? What is “existential kink”? These are just a few of the sorts of things we get into on this fun and wildly heretical episode featuring Caroline Elliot (author of the book “Existential Kink: Unmask Your Shadow and Embrace Your Power; a Method for Getting What You Want by Getting Off on What You Don't”), Mason Smith, Emily Capshaw, and Michael Gungor.

Chris describes himself as a Christian, universalist, exvangelical (meaning he says he used to be an "evangelical" but left evangelicalism, aka. "deconstructed" and then "reconstructed" his current form of "Christianity.") I go through various portions of his interview on TOA to give my thoughts. 52:12 - Twitface (NEW SEGMENT!): Michael Gungor tweeted something this week that runs the word "Christ" through a meat grinder, then goes through its pockets as it lies bleeding on the ground, robbing it of all semblance of meaning. 55:43 - 3 Favorite News Stories (More or Less): The first news story involves Kraft's limited edition mac-and-cheese flavored ice cream. Episode Notes In this Episode Ray and Caitlin talked with Michael Gungor - a Grammy nominated Christian musician and founder of The Liturgists podcast who left the Christian church a few years ago. Recently, U.S. church membership fell below the majority for the first time ever so we figured this would be a great time for us to talk about why this is. Caitlin is a pastor in the Presbyterian Church who grew up in a Christian household, and Ray didn't go to church as a child but became involved as an adult so we have a few perspectives covered.

The Road Back to You: Looking at Life Through the Lens of the Enneagram
Has anyone ever described you as an "information junkie" or as a loner? Do you believe "thoughts" are more reliable than "feelings?" Are you more comfortable observing rather than participating in life? If so, you might be an Enneagram 5 (The Investigator)! This week celebrated singer-songwriter, author, a member of the musical collective Gungor, and co-host of The Liturgists Podcast Michael Gungor takes Ian and Suzanne on a rare private tour through the labyrinth-like mind of an Enneagram 5 (The Investigator). Listen as Michael explains: How Enneagram 5's can't survive without setting aside time to be alone and refill. How 5's are often quite cynical, though they may not always express it. How 5's are so invested in their thoughts that they feel hurt when people disagree with them. How 5's don't enjoy being the center of attention (no small challenge for a performer!) The joys of being the most observant number on the Enneagram. If you think and see the world differently than others and sometimes worry you don't have the inner resources to meet the demands of work and relationship (or know someone who does!), then this episode is for you! Even if you're not a 5 you'll enjoy listening to Michael describe how learning the Enneagram has helped him find his place in the world.
