2024 started off on a very sad note for the hairdressing world with the passing of Angus Mitchell. Angus was the son of the late Paul Mitchell, who was the co-founder of John Paul Mitchell Systems. As someone who had the privilege of having a close working relationship with the company, I was fortunate enough to ‘on occasion' have spent a little time with Angus, and he was always full of life, love, and genuine kindness. This week's podcast is a re-release of episode 46, which I originally recorded in 2020. I'm re-releasing it as a tribute and thank you to Mr Angus Mitchell. He will long be missed and loved by many. In this episode, we discuss ● Why Hawaii is the spiritual home for JPMS. ● The importance of philanthropy and environmental issues. ● Angus's love of cars. The idea that the opportunities are endless in the beauty industry needs no further proof than Kristin Firrell (@kfirrell). Now the VP of Salon Development at @paulmitchellpro, Kristin got her start as a salon stylist, and it was a transformative course at Sassoon in London that informed and drove her passion for education, which continues to this day. This focus on continuous learning, adaptability and understanding the "whys" behind our actions is the backbone of the new Paul Mitchell Pro Rewards program. Of course, the tier-based program rewards purchases, but what truly elevates it to superstar status is that it also rewards hairdressers for completing continuing education. What's more, the points earned can be used beyond the salon space: for financial literacy, travel, even donations to their favorite charities. Be sure to tune in to learn all about this exciting new endeavor and how it helps support Paul Mitchell's commitment to transparency, culture and social responsibility.

A 15-year veteran of the professional beauty industry, Kalena Nordgaarden is not a licensed cosmetologist, but rather a “licensed” marketing extraordinaire. A self-proclaimed enthusiastic cheerleader, promoter and supporter of all the wonderful brands, products and creative geniuses in the industry and at her company, Kalena has been happily working in marketing for the world's largest privately-owned professional haircare company, John Paul Mitchell Systems, for her entire corporate career. Growing up in the mountains of Northern Idaho and then the beaches of Southern California, Kalena worked sports marketing events for JPMS while attending high school and college, and then, after graduating from San Diego State University with a degree in advertising and marketing (and enough minors to make up another degree or two), began her official corporate career at JPMS as the Sports Marketing Coordinator in 2006. What is sports marketing, you ask? Great question. In a nutshell, JPMS sponsors a variety of global sporting events, tours and athletes as a bold and unique way to bring visibility to our brands and products in a non-endemic space by way of event activations and media coverage. We use these partnerships to stay relevant and top-of-mind with the next generation of users and sample our products and educate consumer-based audiences on what our brands and products are and where they can buy them. Over the years sports marketing evolved into what is now called Lifestyle Marketing, which includes not only sports-and-athlete-based partnerships, but partnerships in the music, dance, yoga, and influencer space as well. Kalena has managed it all. She currently oversees the Lifestyle Marketing department and has recently added management of JPMS' Corporate Sustainability Program to her repertoire. When Kalena is not at a JPMS Lifestyle Marketing event, you can find her front row at a concert (live music is her other passion besides sports!), teaching kickboxing and bootcamp classes, enjoying the outdoors with friends, or on a plane jet-setting to her next adventure destination. Our guest on this episode is exactly what she says she is: a Chief Awesomeness Empowerer. Nina Kovner joins us as someone dear to us at Sola - she was our first ever keynote speaker at Sola Sessions and since then we have collaborated on so much education. From webinars, live events, to in-person intimate workshops, we've covered so many important topics ranging from branding, social media, authenticity, storytelling, boundaries and mental health. Nina Kovner is the founder of Passion Squared, where she turned a challenging experience into one of inspiration for herself and others. At Passion Squared, they go straight to the heart of the matter to help entrepreneurs find clarity and eliminate confusion and chaos around how to create, build, and grow a creative small business. Prior to that, Nina spent 25 years working for John Paul Mitchell Systems and there found herself in marketing, a side of the business she never thought she'd be in. Nina has been such an inspiration to the Sola family through the years as a coach, mentor and friend. She describes her true passion as empowering others, and she does just that in this episode and beyond. In This Episode [2:29] - Welcome to the show, Nina! [5:24] - Nina shares her journey in the industry and how her career evolved. [7:18] - She was with John Paul Mitchell Systems for 25 years and discovered her workaholism. She checked herself into a program for depression and had to make a difficult decision. [8:26] - Her experience in marketing and her need to start from scratch led to the creation of Passion Squared. [11:24] - Nina does not have a degree in marketing but found herself there as someone who is passionate about serving others. [12:55] - One of Nina's strengths is her ability to follow her intuition and connect with people. [14:40] - People don't want to be sold to. They want to be connected with. [16:15] - Humans are inherently social beings. Hairdressers specifically are gifted in building relationships. This knowledge made a difference for Nina in marketing. [17:40] - Passion Squared is celebrating 10 years next year and Nina admits that the first couple of years were a struggle on social media. [19:01] - Tools and technology are always changing and you have to be where your customers are. But branding can stay consistent. [21:22] - Word of mouth is a result of great experience. That is the best kind of marketing. [22:42] - Nina explains the difference between brand and business. People don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it. [24:38] - The industry did not jump on social media early on and Nina explains that it's because it's uncomfortable. [26:07] - Without the foundation of a brand story, you will run into problems. [27:47] - Be where your clients are and where you can stay consistent. Consistency builds trust. [29:04] - Yelp and Google Business are sometimes even more important and impactful than social media platforms. [31:10] - Become clear about your brand in the beginning. [32:33] - Nina shares the questions to ask yourself when defining the clarity around your brand. [34:42] - Which is better? The generalist or the specialist? [36:11] - Nina gives an example of how to find a niche to brand and tell your story. [38:49] - You can be general in your services, but your story should be focused. [40:58] - Keep your brand promise which goes back to being completely clear on what that is. [43:40] - You are not the center of the story. It is all about the client. [46:14] - Nina shares what she'll be sharing at the upcoming Sola Sessions. There are many things to love about this industry, but one of the things that I really love is the potential that it has to take you on a journey and enable you to go off in all sorts of different directions, whether it’s as an educator, a salon or school owner, an editorial hairdresser or to work in the product sales or corporate side of the industry. My guest today is Jason Yates who started out as an apprentice hairdresser in a salon in Stoke on Trent - which is a city in the North of England - and he now lives in California and is at 46 years of age the Global President of John Paul Mitchell Systems. To put it simply ‘that is one heck of a journey!’ And I don’t know of anyone else who is now president of a global company that turns over in excess of a billion dollars that started out sweeping the floor and shampooing hair. In today’s podcast, we talk about Jason's journey to the top as well as… The importance of saying yes to every opportunity. Having mentors in your life. The future of product distribution in the professional salon business. Leadership. And lots more!
Dean J. Foster, M.D. Dr. Dean Foster knew he would be a doctor from an early age. His Dad was in general practice when doctors made house calls and delivered babies. Dean witnessed first hand the value of wellness in life. He was educated at UCSD in molecular biology then attended USC for medical school. He did his residency at L.A. county Hospital to become a board certified orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Foster is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He had a successful practice in San Diego involving 4 hospitals trauma departments plus teaching in the medical department ay UCSD. This hectic lifestyle brought him a point of seeking Jesus and travel to The Holy land. Dean did his first mission in 2000 and continues to do missions to the present. He has chosen to lay down the scalpel and partner with Jesus to bring a revival of Christian wellness, protecting missionaries and those who serve the sick from chronic debilitating diseases and cancer. Jeanne Foster Jeanne (Braa) Foster rose from being a single mother and hairdresser to become the Artistic Director of John Paul Mitchell Systems in 1989. During her career she shared her talents on stages around the world. As a role model for hairdressers, Jeanne received the very first North American Hairstylist of the Year Trustees Award. Known for her humility and humanity, in 1999 Jeanne was recognized by Modern Salon Magazine as one of the top 75 educators of the century. She recommitted her life to Jesus and retired. She and Dean married in 2003. In 2006, Dr. Foster learned he had cancer. Still reeling from the diagnosis, he and his wife Jeanne were plunged, out of control, into a whirlwind of specialists, tests, treatment options, and alternative medicine. Dr. Foster and Jeanne credit not only his physical recovery, but also surviving the process itself, with their strong faith in God and the ability to hear His direction for them during this time. From this experience, they developed a vision to share the principles of internal, external and eternal wellness in a Christ-centered program. This program is designed not only to build strength and balance in Christians for long-term health and wellness, but also as a tool for drawing those who are hurt and suffering into a safe environment to learn how to experience Christian wholeness throughout eternity. Today Dean and Jeanne work side-by-side sharing “cellular fitness, physical health and Christian wellness as the foundation for eternal beauty.” http://LifeChurch.com CONTACT INFORMATION deanjfoster@yahoo.com
