GUEST: Crystal Kozlak is program manager for the Food for Thought program at Animal Place, a farmed animal sanctuary in Grass Valley, California. Crystal became inspired to go vegan after taking an animal ethics course during her undergrad at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Crystal worked as a campaign coordinator for Animal Place's Brave the Cage campaign for 2 1/2 years educating college students about the egg industry. Crystal is also the event producer of Vegan Oktoberfest 2021. And she volunteers with Long Beach Water Wagon, delivering essential supplies to her homeless neighbors. MAIN QUESTION: Why should animal organizations consider serving vegetarian or vegan food at their events? TAKEAWAYS: Food for Thought is a campaign that encourages animal organizations to serve only vegan or vegetarian food at their events. The idea behind the campaign is that animal organizations' missions are to help animals so their communities look to them to set standards for the treatment of animals. Serving vegan or vegetarian food is consistent with this mission as it shows compassion for all species of animals. Food for Thought offers grants for organizations to test out serving veg-only food for an event as well as grants for formally adopting a veg-only policy.  Supporters attend events to support an organization's mission. They are not attending for the purpose of getting a meal. Most people are fine skipping meat for a single meal – and, in fact, more and more people are doing this in their own lives. To cater veg food successfully at your events, two tips that may help would be to search for local restaurants that serve vegetarian or vegan in your community and looking into hiring them to cater an event. Another tip is to stick with foods that are naturally plant-based such as pasta with marinara or a taco bar with corn tortilla shells, beans, rice, lettuce, tomatoes, and avocado. Have you ever stopped to wonder why an organization who, let's say, works to protect animals may still serve (other) animals at their events? There's a disconnect there that today's guest, Deva Holub, is working to adjust. She helps to run Animal Place's Food for Thought program whose aim is to help nonprofits adopt mission-driven menu policies for fundraising and sponsored events. The benefits of doing so are plenty, including (for a 150 person event) saving up to 50 farmed animal lives, 55,000 gallons of water, and a much lighter carbon footprint. In fact, she even tells us about how, after aligning their events with their mission, one organization's donor gave them a six-figure gift! For some ideas on how YOU help better the lives of farm animals, check out this episode's show notes at https://link.chtbl.com/ep12devaholubBackground music by Fearless Motivation Instrumentals: Meaning of Life

Kayla Swope is the animal care manager and the main caretaker of the 170 residents of Full Circle Farm Sanctuary (FCFS) - a non-profit located in Warm Springs, GA, dedicated to countering the undeniable cruelty and exploitation inherent within animal agriculture, providing loving lifetime homes for individual farmed animals who otherwise would face horrific suffering and premature deaths. Kayla is a wealth of knowledge about animal healthcare and and amazing hard worker truly following her passion. Kayla is also the most humble person you meet. One of my favorite things about Kayla is her ability to learn from animals. In this interview Kayla shares her journey, and what led her to the work she does today. She talks about the personal stories of individual animals she met along the way who inspire her. She talks about what veganism and kindness mean to her. Kayla is originally from Pennsylvania, where she spent many years working at a cat and dog rescue. In 2016, she interned as an animal caregiver at Animal Place, in California, which eventually led her to start working at Full Circle. She currently resides right in Warm Springs with her dog, Bentlee, her pig Nora, and her cat, Callie. Today, we're going to touch on the topic of saying goodbye to beloved pets who have passed on.  We cover this topic periodically because as much as we hope our pets will live forever, they are only with us for a short time and this can be very difficult, emotionally.  There are a whole lot of people out there who don't understand how difficult pet loss is, and will even try and make people feel bad for feeling bad about grieving over the death of a pet.  Well, to counter that whole mindset, we've invited Melody Jamali from Beautiful Life Urns to the program today.  She has some great ideas for celebrating the lives of our four-legged family members who pass on.  Then after our halftime break, Kim Sturla, the executive director and founder Animal Place will be checking in to discuss the very ironic practice of shelters and rescues having animals on the menus of their fundraisers!  It's a topic that is definitely worth talking about.

Traveling to towns large and small, host Colleen Patrick-Goudreau focuses on the vegan abundance in places whose population is between 2,000 and 3,000, including Murphys, CA and New Hope, PA. She shares her experiences from a recent trip to Animal Place, a sanctuary for farmed animals in Grass Valley, CA, whose population is only 200, when you factor in the human and non-human residents. :) In advance, she thanks Earth Balance and Vegan Essentials for their support and asks listeners to forgive her incessant use of the word "amazing" in this episode.
