Synchronicity is defined in the dictionary as events that appear to an observer as connected in some significant way. A classic example of synchronicity was related by the psychologist Carl Jung, who invented the word when he experienced it. Working with a client, he was hoping for an ‘unexpected and irrational event’ to break through her defenses. As she described a dream about a golden scarab beetle as jewelry, there was a tapping at the window; Jung opened it and caught a scarab beetle, whose golden-green color closely resembled that of the beetle in her dream. We can often find that synchronous events like this bring us strongly into the present moment. This is one of the ways that synchronicity can help us on the spiritual journey. Resource: Blog Insight Post – Synchronicity In The New Age How Synchronicity Works Through Five Mystical Approaches In this podcast, we’re going to use my SHINE Model to explore synchronicity on a much deeper level. SHINE is an acronym that takes us through five energetic levels of awareness. It also reflects the different systems and approaches I use in my readings, coaching, and classes. Together, they give us a framework for understanding not only synchronicity, but also ourselves. The S in SHINE stands for Soul-level awareness. This is the realm of the fifth dimension, the Akashic Records, Spirit Guides, and our deeper soul connection. It’s where we begin to see life from a much bigger perspective. The H stands for Human Design. Human Design is a map of your energy. As I always heard Richard Bandler say in another context, the map is not the territory (our Human Design Chart is not us!). The chart is not here to tell you what to do with your life. Instead, it helps you understand how your aura naturally operates, so you can live more authentically in your own energy and make choices that are aligned with who you really are. The I stands for Intuition. This is about strengthening your connection with your Higher Self. I often describe it as expanding the relationship between the seven chakras within the body and the eighth chakra above the head, which I work with as the Soul Star Chakra. As that connection deepens, intuition becomes clearer and more natural. The N stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP. At its heart, NLP is about understanding how our thoughts, language, and patterns influence the way we experience the world. It offers practical tools for creating positive change and personal growth. Finally, the E stands for Energetics. This is everything happening within your energy field—your aura, your emotional and mental bodies, and the energetic dynamics that influence your everyday experiences, often without you even realising it. Using these five perspectives, we’ll explore how synchronicity works, not just as a series of meaningful coincidences, but as something that can be understood on multiple levels of awareness. That gives us a much richer picture of what may really be happening when synchronicity shows up in our lives. See This Podcast As A Video With Slides https://youtu.be/BO-XUuT9Owo?si=LY6I94rCmgJ_2NBM Understanding How Synchronicity Works Synchronicity is happening all the time, whether we notice it or not. I like to think of it as a continuously flowing river of energy, carrying currents of information and energetic charges. One of the reasons synchronicity is so powerful on the spiritual journey is that it reminds us we aren’t simply a mind living inside a body. We are connected to something much greater. Those connections exist within us, through our inner world, and they extend outwards to other souls and to the living field of life itself. So, How Do We Begin To Notice Synchronicity? One way is to recognize that when we’re becoming aware of meaningful coincidences, we may also be moving into a state of greater vibrational awareness. As our awareness expands, we naturally become more open to seeing patterns, connections, and possibilities that we may have overlooked before. A moment of synchronicity can remind us of our deeper purpose. It may help us feel connected with loved ones in Spirit, offer fresh insight into a relationship or life situation, or completely transform the way we understand a particular circumstance. Sometimes a synchronicity doesn’t change what’s happening around us. Instead, it changes how we see it. And that shift in perspective can make all the difference. How Synchronicity Works Through Soul-level Awareness So, let’s look at synchronicity from the perspective of Soul-level awareness. I believe we all have what I call a Divine Soul Blueprint. One way to imagine it is as your Soul’s own cloud storage or internet site. When a Soul individuates—separates from the greater sea of consciousness—and begins the journey of incarnation, it creates a unique blueprint that holds its individual essence, along with a record of its experiences across lifetimes. That record of incarnations is what many people know as the Akashic Records. Your current life can be accessed in the Akashic Records through your present name and birth details. From there, if it’s helpful for your growth, the records may also reveal information about other lifetimes and the threads that connect them to your life today. So Where Does Synchronicity Fit With Our Divine Soul Blueprint? I’ve found that when we begin to understand aspects of our Divine Soul Blueprint—things like our Divine Energy Centers or our Soul Group—we often discover that we’ve already been living in synchronicity with them all along. We simply didn’t have the language to recognise it. Let me give you an example of how synchronicity works through our Divine Soul Blueprint. When I first discovered that I’m part of the Mintakan Soul Group, so many experiences in my life suddenly made sense. One of the gifts often associated with Mintakan Souls is the ability to perceive future potential in people, situations, and circumstances. It sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? The challenge, at least for me, was that I unconsciously projected those beautiful future possibilities onto people and assumed that was who they already were. Instead of seeing them as they were in the present moment, I was seeing who they could become. After two marriages, I realised that was a very important lesson for me. Human Design and Synchronicity Let’s move on to the H in the SHINE Model: Human Design. If you’re new to Human Design, feel free to visit my website where you can request a free chart and a short introductory report. As an Akashic Records Reader, I see Human Design as the blueprint for your physical life—or, as I sometimes call it, your “meat suit.” Your Soul Blueprint remains the same from lifetime to lifetime, but your Human Design blueprint changes with each incarnation, reflecting the unique circumstances and lessons of this life. Your chart is created using your birth date, time, and location. One thing I always like to emphasize is that Human Design isn’t a prediction tool. It doesn’t tell you what is going to happen. Instead, it shows you how your energy naturally operates. It points you back towards the person you were before family expectations, culture, education, and conditioning layered themselves over your authentic nature. How Does Synchronicity Work With Human Design? The first example I have relates to one of the energy centres in my chart. Human Design works with nine energy centres. Seven of them will probably be familiar if you’ve studied the chakra system—the Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, and Crown. Human Design also includes two additional centres: the G Centre, which I often think of as our inner GPS, and the Spleen Centre. Now, the physical spleen is a small organ tucked under your left rib cage. It filters blood and plays an important role in the immune system. Energetically, however, the Spleen Centre is associated with instinct, intuition in the moment, and our awareness of wellbeing and potential risks. I often describe it as being a bit like an energetic sonar, constantly scanning our environment. The Spleen Chakra Or Energy Center In Human Design People with a defined Spleen Centre often have a consistent instinctive awareness and can help others feel safe. They also tend to respond very quickly in the moment. I, on the other hand, have a completely open Spleen Centre, with no gates or channels connected to it. For years, I noticed that I seemed to react much more strongly to medications than other people. I learned the hard way that I usually need to begin with half the recommended dose. I’m the woman who was practically floating around for three days after taking a Midol! When I later studied Human Design, I discovered that heightened sensitivity to pharmaceuticals is something many people with an open Spleen Centre report. Looking back, that felt like another synchronicity. I’d been living that pattern for years before I ever had a Human Design chart to explain it. Channels, Gates, Planetary Transits and Guinea Pigs The second example involves one of my channels. I have the Channel 35–36, connecting Gate 35 in the Throat Centre with Gate 36 in the Solar Plexus. In traditional Human Design it’s called the Channel of Transitoriness, although in the Success Codex model it’s known as the Channel of Experience. Personally, I much prefer the second name. One characteristic of this channel is that it can bring a desire for new experiences. If we’re not aware of that energy, it can sometimes show up as impulsiveness. One day I wandered into a pet store and found myself seriously considering buying two hairless guinea pigs. They were incredibly cute. Then I caught myself thinking, “This really isn’t like me.” So I went home and checked the planetary transits for the day. You can think of transits as the energetic weather forecast—they temporarily activate different parts of your Human Design chart. Sure enough, that day I had a double activation of the Channel of Transitoriness. I couldn’t help but laugh. Because once the energy settled, I realised that buying two guinea pigs would have been a terrible idea for me. I want to spend quite a bit of time travelling over the next few years, and guinea pigs don’t exactly fit that lifestyle. Think of Planetary Transits In Human Design As A Kind of Weather Passing Through For me, that was another example of synchronicity. My awareness of my Human Design didn’t stop the impulse from arising, but it did help me recognise it for what it was. Instead of acting automatically, I could pause, understand the energy I was experiencing, and make a choice that was much more aligned with the life I actually want to create. Now, I make a conscious effort to understand people as they are today, while still appreciating their potential. That’s a very different way of relating. Another characteristic I’ve noticed is that Mintakan Souls can have a tendency to give people too many chances in relationships. Looking back, I can clearly see that pattern running through both of my marriages. Learning about this part of my Soul Blueprint didn’t determine my future. What it did was give me greater self-awareness. It helped me understand a lifelong pattern, and from that understanding I was able to make different choices. Today, I’m far more discerning instead of getting swept away by someone’s potential. If you’re listening and thinking, “That sounds a bit like me,” then exploring your own Soul Blueprint might be worthwhile. You may even discover a connection with the Mintakan Soul Group—or you may find a completely different pattern that’s uniquely yours. This is just one example of what I mean by Soul-level synchronicity. The more we learn about our own Soul Blueprint, the more we begin to recognise that many of the threads running through our lives weren’t random at all. They were quietly weaving together all along, waiting for us to notice them. Resource: The Soul Star Reading, Energy Centers, Soul Group and Past Life Pattern Clearing How Synchronicity Works With Intuition Next, let’s look at the I in the SHINE Model: Intuition. For many people, intuition is the context in which they most often experience synchronicity. I like to think of intuition as receiving a download of information from our higher energy centres—those above the heart—or as a response to our desires, wishes, and needs arising from the lower energy centres. When those intuitive impressions meet our thoughts or our emotions—our mental and emotional bodies—that’s when synchronicity can emerge. It’s almost as though that quiet energetic river we’ve been talking about sends a pulse through our awareness, connecting the inner experience with something happening in the outer world. Let me give you a recent example. I recently travelled to Albuquerque and rented a car at the airport. Nothing particularly synchronistic about that… or so I thought. Before I left home, I’d asked one of the teacher Spirit Guides I’m currently working closely with to send me a sign during the journey—something that would help me understand synchronicity more deeply for this podcast. Signs Of Synchronicity – Repeating Numbers Such as the 11:11 When I arrived at the airport, I ended up waiting about forty-five minutes in the heat for my rental car. Eventually, the paperwork arrived, and I noticed the licence plate ended with 77. A few minutes later, an employee came over and apologised. There was a problem with that vehicle, so they were giving me a different one. I looked at the new paperwork. That licence plate also ended with 77. Now my attention was definitely captured. For me, synchronicities often seem to build in a series, so I found myself thinking, “Okay… something’s going on here.“ I drove to my hotel, but there wasn’t a room number 77 or anything else that stood out. So later, in meditation, I asked my guide, “What’s the significance of the number 77?“ The response I received was simple. “If I had lived to my birthday this year, how old would I have been?“ I looked up his birth details. He would have been 77. Now, I completely appreciate that some people listening may hear that and simply think it was an interesting coincidence. For me, though, it felt deeply meaningful. It was exactly the kind of sign I’d asked for, and it strengthened my relationship with my Spirit Guide in a way that felt both personal and encouraging. Whether you see experiences like this as guidance, a meaningful coincidence, or simply an invitation to pay closer attention, they have a way of opening the door to a much richer conversation with life itself. People often ask me what NLP™ has to do with spirituality or synchronicity. For me, it’s quite simple. Synchronicity may provide the invitation, but NLP™ gives us practical tools to help us notice it and respond consciously. One of the ideas I love in NLP™ is that our minds are constantly filtering information. Every second, we’re surrounded by far more sights, sounds, and experiences than we could ever consciously process. Our brains naturally decide what is important enough to bring into our awareness. Have you ever decided to buy a particular make or colour of car, and then suddenly you start seeing that same car everywhere? Those cars didn’t suddenly appear. Your attention simply became tuned to notice them. I believe synchronicity can work in a similar way. The more we develop self-awareness and become intentional about what we’re paying attention to, the more we begin to notice meaningful connections that may have been there all along. NLP also reminds us that our state of mind matters. When we’re stressed, rushing through life, or feeling overwhelmed, our awareness can become quite narrow. But when we’re relaxed, curious, and present, we naturally become more open to the subtle patterns and connections unfolding around us. For me, NLP doesn’t explain away synchronicity. Instead, it gives us practical ways to work with our awareness. It helps us move from reacting automatically to responding consciously, so when meaningful moments arise, we’re ready to pause and ask: “What might this be inviting me to see?” The NLP™ Technique of Anchoring One of the most useful techniques in NLP is called anchoring. An anchor is simply a trigger that connects us with a particular emotional or mental state. We experience natural anchors all the time. A favourite song might instantly transport you back to a particular moment in your life, or the smell of freshly baked bread might bring back memories of your grandmother’s kitchen. In NLP™, we can also create anchors deliberately. By pairing a physical gesture—such as pressing your thumb and forefinger together—with a calm, confident, or deeply connected state, you can train your mind and body to access that feeling more easily in the future. From the perspective of synchronicity, an anchor doesn’t create meaningful moments, but it can help us return to a more open and present state where we’re more able to notice them. Complaint-Free Anchor One example of an anchor I used many years ago was a purple bracelet. If you haven’t heard of this movement, it was created by Will Bowen, who was the lead minister of the One Community Spiritual Center in Kansas City, Missouri. He gave a sermon about the impact of constant complaining and imagined what the world might look like if we became more conscious of the words we spoke. From that idea came the 21-Day Complaint Free Challenge. Participants wear a purple Complaint Free Bracelet and commit not to voice complaints for 21 days. If they catch themselves complaining, the bracelet is moved to the other wrist, and they begin again. What I love about this is that the bracelet becomes a physical reminder—a simple anchor that brings awareness back to the present moment and helps shift a person’s state of mind. Perhaps you already have something like this in your life. It might be a piece of jewellery, a meaningful song on your phone, a photograph, or even a memory of a time when you felt deeply connected and present in your body. These can all become anchors that help you return to awareness, slow down, and become more receptive to that quiet river of synchronicity flowing through everyday life. Resource: Blog Insight Post – A Complaint Free World: Begin to Disconnect From The Habit Of Complaining Energetics and How Synchronicity Works Most people have experienced synchronicity in daily life at some point in their lives, even if they didn't have a name for it. Perhaps you were thinking about someone moments before they called. Maybe a particular book title, phrase, or symbol kept appearing everywhere you looked. Or perhaps you received exactly the information you needed just when you needed it. From a spiritual perspective, synchronicity often feels like the Universe winking at us — a reminder that there may be more going on beneath the surface of everyday life than we realise. Lee Carroll, who has channeled a peace-loving consciousness called Kryon since 1986, and who has spoken and channeled at the United Nations, calls the 11:11 number that a lot of people see on clocks, licence plates or somewhere in their day – double illumination, or a ‘wink’ from your spirit guides. Meaning: that they see you. Resource – Book: The Journey Home: A Kryon Parable: The Story of Michael Thomas and the Seven Angels, Lee Carroll and Kryon Useful Resources Pam Grout’s books E2 and E3, the E being for energy, contain a lot of fun exercises you can play with to connect with that quiet river of synchronicity. I have tried her butterflies exercise, setting an intention to see butterflies during the day, but my favorite so far was setting the intention to see a purple truck. I live in Kansas, so I figured a purple truck would be rare. Within two days, when walking my dog, a purple metallic truck drove by. If you want to set an intention to see synchronous signs, it’s important to be as light-hearted as possible. This is one way we elevate our mind to higher energies. Resource: Insight Blog Post – E3 (ECubed) and Nine More Energy Experiments – Interesting! As Pam Grout puts it: – “The fact that you are connected to everyone and everything in the Universe is not just mind-blowing news. It's something you should be using. The fact that your thoughts are energy waves being broadcast out into this giant field of infinite potentiality is something you should be more aware of and deploying on a moment-by-moment basis. Some might even suggest we've squandered 100 years merely poking at these principles, discussing them at the water cooler rather than actively using them to make our world, our lives, and our relationships better.” Resource – Book: E-Squared: Nine Do-it-yourself Energy Experiments That Prove Your Thoughts Create Your Reality by Pam Grout So, play with synchronicity in your day-to-day life. Have a little fun with it, journal your synchronistic hits, and keep on playing. When you access higher energies, as neuroscientist Dr Tara Swart, author of Signs, says, “If we look back at the way our ancestors used their intuition to sense and interpret the land, a cloud formation could mean that rain is coming, or it could mean that your ancestors are talking to you. It just seems like such a beautiful way to live.” Resource – Book: The Signs: The New Science of How To Trust Your Instincts by Tara Swart MD PhD In my experience, I still can’t explain how I saw this cloud being drawn in the sky in the shape of an angel, the day after my mother’s funeral. So set intentions for seeing a sign, have fun with it, record your findings, and notice any positive states of mind that result. Did You Enjoy How Synchronicity Works With My SHINE Model? Principal Matters: The School Leader's Podcast with William D. Parker
Meet Will Bowen Will Bowen is an internationally recognized speaker, author, and founder of the Complaint Free® Movement. This movement has inspired millions of people across more than 100 countries to live with greater positivity and personal accountability. He is best known for his bestselling book A Complaint-Free World, which introduced a simple yet powerful idea: by becoming more aware of our words, especially complaints, we can transform our mindset, relationships, and results. His challenge has helped individuals, teams, and organizations break the habit of chronic complaining and replace it with intentional, solution-focused thinking. His message has been featured on major media outlets, including Oprah, NBC's Today Show, and People Magazine. Whether speaking to schools, corporations, or leadership groups, Will Bowen equips people with tools to elevate their thinking and ultimately, their lives. Complaining, Mindset, and Personal Growth In this conversation, Will Bowen shares the origin of his global initiative, which began with a simple purple bracelet and a challenge: go 21 days without complaining. What started as a small experiment quickly grew into a worldwide movement, helping millions become more aware of their thoughts, words, and habits. At the heart of Bowen's message is the idea that complaining is not just harmless venting; it reinforces negativity, limits growth, and shapes how we experience the world. Instead, he encourages individuals to take responsibility for their responses and focus on solutions rather than problems. The G.R.I.P.E. Framework A key takeaway from the conversation is Bowen's practical acronym for understanding complaints: G.R.I.P.E. G – Get Attention ComplaintsWill makes an important distinction between honest reflection and complaining; complaining is expressing something primarily for selfish appeal or ego.Response Tip: When others complain for attention, redirect their thinking toward gratitude. Ask: “So what is going well with __________?” For example, if someone complains about students, ask: “What's going well with your classes?” This shift moves the conversation from misery to possibility. R – Remove Responsibility ComplaintsComplaining is often used as a way to get off the hook. When faced with accountability, people may point to others' failures or claim circumstances are beyond their control. This keeps them stuck and avoids ownership.Response Tip: Shift from excuse-making to solution-seeking by asking: “If it were possible, how might you do it?” This question removes the escape route and opens the door to action. I – Inspire Envy Complaints (The Humble Brag)Sometimes complaints are really disguised attempts to appear superior. For instance, pointing out someone else's shortcomings may actually be a way to highlight one's own strengths. These “humble brags” create comparison rather than connection.Response Tip: Will Bowen suggests “complimenting the opposite.” If someone points out another's flaw, you might respond by affirming their strength: “It's great that you're always on time.” This can gently expose the motive behind the complaint and shift the tone. Changing the subject is also an effective way to disengage from this pattern. P – Power ComplaintsPeople who feel powerless sometimes use complaining as a way to gain control—often through gossip or criticism of others. This can be especially toxic in teams.Response Tip: If someone comes to you to complain about another person, respond with: “It sounds like the two of you have a lot to talk about.” If they continue, you might add: “Would you like me to arrange a meeting?” This redirects them toward resolution instead of reinforcing the complaint. E – Excuse Complaints (Excusing Poor Performance)Complaining is one of the quickest ways to avoid accountability. Instead of addressing areas for growth, individuals may focus on obstacles or limitations. Bowen notes that, like in team sports, those who resist coaching often weaken the team dynamic.Response Tip: Replace excuses with ownership by asking: “How do I plan to improve next time?” This shifts the focus from justification to growth and from problems to solutions. Complaining, Social Media, and Leadership A powerful part of the conversation focused on how social media platforms often amplify and reward complaining. Bowen explained that algorithms are designed to prioritize emotionally charged content (especially negativity) because it drives engagement. As a result, complaints, outrage, and criticism tend to spread faster and wider than thoughtful or solution-oriented messages. In a world where complaints are often rewarded with attention, leaders stand out by modeling steadiness, responsibility, and solution-focused thinking. Listen for even more! Will Bowen reminds us that eliminating complaints does not mean ignoring real problems. Instead, it means choosing to address those problems in a way that is constructive, responsible, and focused on solutions. Listen to the entire conversation for even more great takeaways, and as always, thank you for doing what matters! In this episode of The High Performance Mindset, Dr. Cindra Kamphoff sits down with Will Bowen—founder of the global Complaint Free® movement—to explore how habitual complaining quietly erodes confidence, performance, leadership, and culture. Will shares the origin story behind the now-iconic purple bracelet and how a simple 21-day challenge became a worldwide movement impacting millions. Together, they unpack why complaining feels so automatic—even for high performers—and how awareness is the first step toward real behavior change. The conversation dives deep into the psychology of complaining, including Will's five types of complaints and his powerful GRIPE framework, revealing the hidden motives behind why people complain and the true cost it creates for teams and organizations. Will also explains the critical difference between constructive problem-solving and unproductive complaining—and how leaders can model accountability without suppressing honest feedback. This episode is a masterclass in personal ownership, confidence, and intentional response, showing how reducing complaints doesn't mean ignoring problems—it means choosing responsibility, agency, and growth. You'll Learn: Why habitual complaining undermines confidence, mindset, and performance The five types of complaints and how to recognize them in yourself and others How the simple act of awareness (like the bracelet) accelerates behavior change The GRIPE framework and the real reasons people complain How leaders can address feedback without creating a culture of blame The difference between problem-solving and complaining—and why it matters How becoming complaint-free strengthens confidence, ownership, and agency
In this episode, Steve Fretzin and David Schnurman discuss:Building a resilient mindset through optimism, reflection, and habit formationLessons from career pivots and entrepreneurial problem-solving in the legal spaceCultivating emotional regulation through gratitude, compassion, and non-judgmentEmbracing technology and AI to repurpose content and increase professional impact Key Takeaways:Journaling and identifying recurring mindset blocks can help lawyers recognize patterns of imposter syndrome and emotional burnout, giving them the self-awareness and clarity needed to shift their thinking and take purposeful steps toward resilience. When faced with the sudden loss or burnout of a critical team member, initiating an honest, values-based conversation centered on purpose, mutual respect, and long-term impact can be the difference between salvaging a project or watching it collapse.Implementing a simple but consistent daily practice of writing down three gratitudes, avoiding all outward complaints for 21 days, and giving five genuine compliments can rewire your stress response and gradually create a more positive, grounded internal state.Delaying your instinct to judge setbacks as inherently negative by using the mantra “good thing, bad thing, who knows” allows you to stay emotionally balanced, maintain perspective, and remain open to positive outcomes that may not be immediately visible. At work, we often operate in transactional mode, almost always skipping the human side of communication. But if you want to build trust, boost performance, and create a culture of belonging for your teams, you need to let go of silence, stress, and surface-level interactions. The only way to make meaningful connections is intentionally embracing positive communication. However, it's easier said than done. That's why we partnered up with Dr. Julien Mirivel for the second time in this episode to explore the elements of positive communication so that you can lead and connect with your people more meaningfully. In Part 2 of this powerful episode of the Happiness Squad Podcast, Julien Mirivel returns to unpack the final three behaviors from his model of Positive Communication: Disclosing, Encouraging, and Listening. He explores how small acts, like sharing your own story, offering meaningful praise, or even opening your hand, can create deeper trust and connection at work.Things you will learn in this episode:• “Disclosing” as a reciprocal and deeply humanizing act• How “Encouraging” moves people from who they are to who they can become• How “Listening” helps transcend perceived differences especially for leaders• The three forms of support• Making Positive Communication a HabitThis is your playbook for building lasting connections. Sau đó, ông đúc kết thành cuốn sách nổi tiếng “A Complaint Free World: How to Stop Complaining and Start Enjoying the Life You Always Wanted” (Tạm dịch là Một Thế Giới Không Than Phiền: Làm Thế Nào Để Ngừng Phàn Nàn và Bắt Đầu Tận Hưởng Cuộc Sống Bạn Luôn Mong Muốn)Chúng ta sẽ cùng nhau bàn luận về chủ đề này thông qua video chia sẻ ngày hôm nay.
In a world where complaints have become second nature, Rabbi Dunner explores the impact of our collective grumbling and the transformative power of gratitude. Drawing from Will Bowen's global "Complaint Free" movement and lessons from Parshat Devarim, Rabbi Dunner delves into how our words shape our reality. Instead of perpetuating negativity, Rabbi Dunner challenges us to adopt a positive, solution-oriented mindset that can lead to a more harmonious and fulfilling life.
Will Bowen, author of A Complaint Free World: How to Stop Complaining and Start Enjoying the Life You Always Wanted joins Joe to discuss the negative impact of complaining on our perception of the world. They also explore how making a conscious effort to quit complaining can significantly improve our lives. In this episode, Joe and Will dive into the following topics:How the 21-Day Complaint Free challenge worksThe social reasons why people actually complainThe difference between processing and venting and why it mattersUsing negative feelings as a catalyst for self-reflectionThe myth of blowing off steamDeveloping a mindset for embracing challengesAfter decades of unprecedented sales success in insurance, broadcasting, and advertising, on July 23, 2006 Will Bowen's life changed forever…and so did the lives of tens of millions of people (so far).On that day, Will invited 250 people to try and break the negative habit of complaining by going 21 consecutive days without uttering a single gripe. Will gave each person a purple bracelet to be used as a mindfulness tool. His idea: switch the bracelet from wrist-to-wrist with each spoken complaint and keep switching until you go 21 consecutive days without complaining. Will's idea EXPLODED around the world until now, some 15 years later, the worldwide Complaint Free bracelet total is over 15 million and climbing. Will Bowen's 21-Day Complaint Free challenge has been recommended by Oprah, Maya Angelou, Tim Ferris, Joe Vitale, Gary Zukov, The Wall Street Journal, NBC's Today Show, the ABC Evening News, NPR, and too many additional celebrities and media outlets to include here. Will has written 5 International Bestselling books that have sold more than 4 million copies worldwide and have been translated into more than 35 languages.Special thanks to this week's sponsors!Veteran-founded Adyton. Grammar nerds will especially enjoy this week's episode of The Friday Nooner—sponsored by Whitley Recruiting—with its discussion of the difference between farther/further. (Pro tip: Think of the “far” in “farther” as indicating distance, as in “to run far.” That leaves “further” when you mean a difference of degree, not of literal distance.) After the break, Joe and Pete welcomed guest Will Bowen, the CEO of Raleigh-based Givebacks, a platform for schools and nonprofits to manage fundraising and charitable giving. We first profiled the startup (under its previous name, MemberHub) in November, 2019, and named it to our inaugural Startups To Watch list in 2021.

My flight was awful. The restaurant's service was terrible. The traffic was horrible. My boss is the worst. Our culture is the stupidest.Whenever we get together with other people, we hear lots of complaints, and plenty come out of our own mouths. All this complaining may be ubiquitous, but it's not entirely innocuous. Complaining puts us in a negative mood, hurts our health, and damages our relationships. If you've ever wanted to complain less, my guest today has some advice on how to break the complaining habit and embrace a more positive and proactive life. His name is Will Bowen, and he's the founder of the Complaint Free movement and the author of A Complaint Free World. Today on the show, Will first defines what constitutes a complaint. He then shares the five main reasons people offer complaints, so you can learn to recognize what triggers yours. Will also explains how to deal with being on the receiving end of each type of complaint, so you don't have to listen to the complaining of others.Resources Related to the PodcastAoM Article: Never Complain; Never ExplainAoM Article: Why Negativity Is a Social KillerDr. Robin Kowalski's researchA New Earth: Awakening Your Life's Purpose by Eckhart TolleConnect With Anthony ArvanitakisA Complaint Free World WebsiteWill's Website

Time to discuss the three defenders that I believe will end up being the 1st-Team All Americans in Division I come the end of 2023. No hot takes, just some good ol fashioned prognostication that I think most will agree with overall. We're going to talk about a guy from Georgetown (Will Bowen), a guy from Cornell (Gavin Adler), and a guy from Maryland (Brett Makar). All three of these guys were 1st-Team All Americans in 2022, so this isn't a hot take, and Cole Kastner (Virginia) is the only other guy I think that is legit in the mix in 2023. Will Bowen is a lock for 1st-Team and probably will repeat as Defensive Player of the Year. I think Makar's longevity as a starter of every game in his career at Maryland is going to help him. Adler will likely also improve and pick up a 1st spot. But if anyone is going to end up on the 1st-Team that isn't one of my top 3, it's Kastner. Hi Friend! I'm so excited to have you join me for today's episode! I don't know about you, but I have recently been doing some self-reflection and I'm embarrassed to say, I've been complaining WAY more than I'd like. A couple of years ago, I ran across a book called, "A Complaint Free World: How to Stop Complaining and Start Enjoying the Life You Always Wanted," by Will Bowen. I started the challenge but never finished! So, what better time than now to begin again and I would LOVE for you to join me! I'll explain EVERYTHING in today's episode! Don't worry though, we are in this together and won't be starting until November 1st, so you have a couple of weeks to prepare for the challenge! I am so thankful for you taking the time to do this!
This week I'm interviewing Will Bowen, author of A Complaint Free World: How to Stop Complaining and Start Enjoying the Life You Always Wanted. He's been featured on Oprah, Dr. Oz, Forbes, NBC's Today Show, CBS Sunday Morning, The ABC World News, Fox News, People, Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal and Chicken Soup for the Soul. Will Bowen is a humorous motivational speaker, a #1 International best-selling author, a multi #1 Amazon best-selling author, an award-winning trainer, the 2016 Purdue University Executive in Residence, and he's the World Authority on Complaining —why people complain, what's wrong with complaining, and how to get ourselves and others to stop. Will Bowen is the founder of the Complaint FreeⓇmovement with millions of followers worldwide. The complaint free movement is a 21 day challenge that involves a purple bracelet, and you can order the purple bracelets here: acomplaintfreeworld.org/. Once you receive your purple bracelet: Put it on your wrist. Each time you catch yourself complaining, criticizing or gossiping, move the bracelet to the other wrist. The aim is to go 21 days without a single complaint. If you switched wrists, you must start challenge all over again, until you get to 21 days with no complaining. The purple bracelet creates an awareness of just how much we all complain, so it's a good mindfulness tool! Who's up for the challenge? Here's where you can download the "No Complaining" worksheet, that I will be sharing with my Book Club! Hey, are you enjoying the podcast? If so, new episodes are released each Friday, so please follow Coffee with Kim, leave a review, and share with your friends!
The 2021 college lacrosse season featured some of the highest profile transfers the sport has seen, headlined by Michael Sowers ditching Princeton for Duke. The 2022 season doesn't have any Sowers level transfers to boast of, but that doesn't mean that there aren't some very capable players that will be donning new colors this upcoming season, and I'd like to talk about them. A guy like Sean Lulley (Penn to Duke, Attack) has somehow snuck under the radar, but make no mistake, Lulley put up BIG numbers in the covid shortened 2020 season. His 30 points over 5 games made him one of the leading scorers in the nation and despite not playing any meaningful lacrosse since that 2020 season, I expect he'll do big things for Duke playing alongside O'Neill and Robertson. Everyone has known for a while that Will Bowen was ditching UNC for Georgetown in 2022, so this wasn't a surprise. But what is...Gibson Smith is coming back, so the Hoyas now have two of the top 5 long-poles in the country anchoring their defense. Owen McElroy being back in cage doesn't hurt either considering he was one of the best, if not the best, goalie in the country last season. My favorite transfer, and one of the biggest surprises was Richie Connell leaving Richmond for Denver. Connell will be asked to pick up some of the slack offensively as Denver graduated some stupid talent on attack last season. Expect Connell to step in and be one of Denver's top two or three leading scorers. There is no way he won't be an impact right away. There are more that I'll discuss as well, Mitch Bartolo (Penn to Rutgers, A/M), Jonathan Donville (Cornell to Maryland, A/M), Jason Reynolds (Richmond to Notre Dame, D), Kevin Mack (Michigan to Stony Brooke, A), Bobby Gavin (Virginia to Syracuse, G), Caton Johnson (North Carolina to Ohio State, G) and Mustang Sally (Richmond to Loyola, SSDM). Nick Buda was the featured artist on just the second ever Working Drummer podcast back in January 2015 and we are happy to have him back to talk about what he's been up to and see what more we can learn from this super pro player. Early in his career, Nick toured with such diverse artists as Edwin McCain, Hank Williams Jr., Jedd Hughes, Maia Sharp, Emily West, Col. Bruce Hampton and the Codetalkers and many others. Playing with these various artists has led to performing at so many great iconic venues such as the Grand Ole Opry along with TV appearances on many of the late night and daytime talk shows. It also led to a whole new side of Nick's career as a session drummer. Nick's unique drumming style combines his delicate touch with a soulful r&b backbeat and an explosive energy, which adds depth and excitement to his tracks. His unmistakeable style infiltrates both live and studio settings putting him in high demand amongst the Music Row elite. I'm excited we're back in a publishing rhythm now! This episode is about finding the positivity in life, rather than leaning towards negativity and complaining. It comes from Marcus Aurelius' Stoic Meditations and includes some fun practices to cut complaining out of our lives. Here is Will Bowen's vision for A Complaint-Free World and here's the first blog post that introduced me to the 21-day No Complaint Experiment. You can cut out complaining if you focus on it. I believe in you. Continue the conversation on social media (but I'm off of socials right now thanks to Episode 20 with Jesse Sigrist talking about deleting social media). This weekend features by far the best and deepest schedule of IL Top 20 matchups yet this season, and D-Fly and Dixie are here to preview all the big games. To start, they recap a slim week of news and talk through their selections for IL’s Midseason All-America teams. Be sure to check out Matt Kinnear’s meaty midseason conference update. There are a staggering eight (8) bona fide, certified, marquee matchups this weekend, so they get to the business quickly. Let’s get it!This week’s interview features a wonderful conversation with North Carolina head coach Joe Breschi. As the Tar Heels prepare for a rematch with No. 6 Virginia, the guys discuss how the pandemic has affected life in Chapel Hill, the Heels’ incredible offensive firepower and how to keep the troops happy, recruiting during COVID, the emergence of Collin Krieg in goal, his high praise for his assistant coaches, Will Bowen and how at this point in the ACC season you have to prepare for one-goal games.
How many bullets can Michael Pena absorb? Can a spy car fly with a parachute? Can Jake Gyllenhaal magically make cameras levitate? How fast is Dennis Rodman's motorcycle? All the questions we forgot tackle during this episode. Join me, and Will Bowen on another sloppy adventure into cinema, on It's Just 2 Movies!
We think we can all agree that it was time to have Meg Stalter on Cultch. And readers? This ep does not disappoint. Fresh off a, get this, bad car accident, Matt is still alive to record the podcast and ultimately that's good because Meg is the funniest and gives us all her takes on the Sex and the City reboot, meeting up with LOVERS in quarantine (and also not), and the Scorsese vs. Marvel ugh drama!!!!!!! Also, the impact of Grease, auditioning for a Six Flags revue with "Teardrops on my Guitar", dinner theater, when Meg was attacked by Lana Del Rey stans, how trolls online are literal children, how to let someone know you're not down to talk shit, and self-improvement during quarantine LOL. Also, should we start using "bunny" as a term of endearment? Will Bowen eat his toenails? And a shout out to Chicago comedy! RARRRRR!!!!!! Listen lol
North Carolina's Will Bowen has entered the transfer portal, however I don't think this is a big deal, as the situation is simple and makes total sense when you're not jumping to conclusions. We'll talk about the top returning college lacrosse defensive units that include Army, Georgetown, Providence, Ohio State and Syracuse (per LacrosseBucket.com). We'll talk about the D2 and D3 college lacrosse tournaments possibly nixing teams and dropping participation a bit. We'll get into more, but it's Christmas Eve and there isn't a whole lot going on at the moment. PLL Merger? Maybe. Syracuse covid issues, probably not haha. 21 jours sans se plaindre (Will Bowen) by Radio Victoria
In this episode we talk about the book, A Complaint Free World, by Will Bowen. We took the 21 day no complaining challenge, and talk about our trial and error in the process of becoming complaint free. We also explore the positive changes this challenge can have on your life.
With the very exciting addition of coveted transfer Chris Gray, the outlook for UNC Lacrosse in 2020 was good, and they proved the hype was real by starting the season 7-0. Their offense jumped from 12 goals per game in 2019 to 17+ goals per game in 2020's shortened season. Good news, they return almost everyone on the offensive side of the ball. Bad news, the questions about the depth of their defense remain, and that could hurt the Heels if they don't figure that side of the ball out in 2021. Granted, they didn't get a chance to prove themselves defensively in 2020 as they never made it to the ACC portion of their schedule. But any true lacrosse fans know that's the only thing anyone can doubt about this team, because they are stacked all over the field. Offensive production returning for North Carolina, Chris Gray, Nicky Solomon, Alex Trippi, William Perry, Tanner Cook, Justin Anderson, and the list goes on. Caton Johnson and Will Bowen will anchor the defense and a plethora of other solid returns give Tarheel fans a lot of reasons to be optimistic at their chances of making it to Memorial Day Weekend. Are you managing your brain chemistry in a healthy and productive way? What are you doing to the brain chemistry of those around you? Odd questions for most of us. This MindEspresso is about managing the chemicals in your brain through your actions and thoughts from Dr. David Rock of the Neuroleadership Institute, Christine Comaford, the author of SmartTribes, and Will Bowen, the author of A Complaint Free World. How do your manage your brain to release Dopamine, Seratonin, Oxytocin and Endorphins vs. Norepinephrine/Cortisol? Why do you complain and what does that do to your brain chemistry? Dr. Rock says the most important things for people to remember is to think about the quality of your thinking. Will Bowen explains why we complain and how to stop: “complaining let’s us know there’s a victim in the neighborhood” I primarily work with corporate executives, but I also have a passion for personal leadership. I’ve started these Personal Leadership MindEspressos from people I’ve interviewed. **Critical Feedback encouraged. It’s round 5. Its going to be weekly for now on Facebook. You probably never think about it until you get a rental car – but why do some cars have the gas tank door on the left side and others have it on the right? This episode begins with the unusual and very practical reason why. http://www.rd.com/advice/travel/car-gas-tanks/Everyone complains. Some people complain A LOT more than others. Yet, when you stop and think about it, complaining does little good and it tends to turn other people off. Will Bowen has spent a long time exploring the world of complainers. He speaks on the subject; he distributes bracelets that remind people not to complain (over 11 million so far) and he is author of the book A Complaint Free World (https://amzn.to/3bxdtZR). He joins me to explain why people complain and explains the spectacular benefits to not complaining – and a great strategy to stop it.To order a bracelet go to: www.AComplaintFreeWorld.orgEvery cook has wondered if adding a bay leaf to a recipe really makes a difference. Being positive instead of negative, we’ve all heard plenty about. But then we go about our days and our lives being...what? Are we really changing ourselves? As I often seek to do, I want to know the root. If we are dealing with any negativity, why? Where is it coming from? I’m not going to tell you, instead, I’m asking. I did ask, actually. I posted this question on Facebook, “Which of these are you most prone to struggle with? 1. Complaining, 2. Criticizing, 3. Gossiping, 4. Sarcasm. And about which? a. Other people, b. Circumstances, c. Yourself. Then, what do you think is the root cause? The responses are still coming in. The question was prompted by my recent show, #763, with Will Bowen, titled “Complaining is poisoning our success.” We’ve gotten great feedback on that show, I really encourage you to listen to it if you haven’t. Actually, it’s a great one to share with those you are closest with, as their complaining helps fuel your own. I had Tom Ziglar join me and we talked through many of your comments with the intent of helping us all understand why we have these feelings, so we can be aware and take steps to curb it. *This excerpt was taken from out 2018 interview. Are there professional ways to deal with complainers in the workplace? In this episode of the Talent Angle, Will Bowen, author of A Complaint Free World, shares five ways to identify chronic complaining in your work environment and how to silence them with easy-to-remember solutions.
So often in business start ups, and even in well established businesses, we make huge investments in giving people what we think and believe they want. We know we can help solve a problem or fulfill a desire. Over 20 years ago I invested over $50,000 in a business I knew solved a big problem. It legitimately did. It was not till the money was spent and the business fully launched that I found out, it wasn’t a solution people wanted. Today the problem still exists! But human nature and habit triumphs. In today’s show I bring back Will Bowen, my guest from show 763 where we discussed the psychology and power of...not complaining. And how pervasive this poisonous habit is in all of us. In this show we walk through Will’s personal habits, going through the seven spokes on the Ziglar Wheel of Life. In the career spoke Will cited his secret to success is simply finding out what people want and giving it to them! He listens to his fans and followers and gives them what they want. It’s obviously working. Will’s organization has handed out over 11 million purple, Complaint Free World bracelets, and over 3 million copies of his book, A Complaint Free World, have sold. You will enjoy this behind the scenes look at the daily habits Will employes to give him the success in life he’s experienced. I encourage you to take Will’s Complaint Free Challenge. You want more success and better fruition for your life. What you are about to have revealed is possibly your greatest, most detrimental bad habit. As English is the international business language, complaining is the international language we use in relationships with other humans. In this show I bring you Will Bowen, the founder and purveyor of an initiative called A Complaint Free World. You will hear why his fans include Maya Angelo and Oprah Winfrey and he’s been featured on The Today Show, CBS Sunday Morning, ABC Evening News and much more. 12 million of his purple “Complaint Free World” bracelets have been sent to people in over 106 countries. Your mind will be blown to realize how prevalent this divisive and destructive habit is in our culture, and in your own mouth. Following this revelation we will cover exactly why we and others complain so, so often. It is disheartening, but also convicting and something you can start reversing immediately. Not easily, mind you. But when you understand how your complaining is undermining your life you’ll understand why I now feel it’s quite possibly the number one thing we can address for our overall peace, joy, fulfillment, and life success. Will provides us with a methodology to decrease our complaining with a Complaint Free Challenge. Today I wanted to share something with you that I have noticed about myself. In the past, I used to ask my extremely positive husband and father to “tone it down” with their positivity. I would question why they were so happy and why they intentionally chose joy everyday. I did not understand how anyone could live in such a high vibration simply by being alive. I later realized that by questioning their joy I was actually interfering with it. I wanted to bring them down to my level of comfort. I didn’t realize that my low energy wasn’t able to handle their happiness. As I have worked on my own gratitude and my own energy has shifted, people now ask me the same questions I use to ask them. “How can you be so happy? How can you find so much joy?” It is difficult to walk through life and maintain joy unless you are intentional with it. There is a lot of negative energy in the world. We have the power however to amplify joy and positive energy through practices like gratitude and developing the habit of seeing the good. It’s not always easy, but now after experiencing its power I am more passionate than ever and want to share these practices with you. Gratitude is a choice that we make. We want to support you as you make these choices yourself and walk in a lifestyle of gratitude. Find us in our private Facebook Community: Hope to Recharge...because as always, together is better! Are there professional ways to dealing with complainers in the workplace? Complaining is like bad breath - you notice it when it comes out of someone else’s mouth, but not when it comes out of your own. Needless to say it happens all the time. "Fish discover water last” is a French Proverb. It’s meaning is that when we are completely immersed in something, we are oblivious it is there. It is only when are pulled of it, that we can see how immersed we were. This week we leap off a viral rant by Gary Vaynerchuk and discuss the state of criticizing, complaining, and gossiping in our workplaces, our lives, and our world. What’s really going on? What are the costs? Who’s paying them? And what can we do about it? We have a powerful conversation with Will Bowen, the founder of A Complaint Free World. He tells us the five reasons why people complain and we challenge you to use one solution to rid yourself of all of them. Also, we not only answer last week’s question of “Who’s Listening to Us in Ghana?”, you actually get to meet him in a cool (and old timey) “Listener of the Week” segment. #109: Happy holidays! I thought it would be nice to wrap up this year with a lighthearted holiday episode about the importance of keeping a positive attitude. Will Bowen, my guest on the final episode of 2017 (wow!), started a campaign to motivate people to complain less. He noticed that many people in his community said they wanted more stuff -- more possessions -- but they complained about what they already had. So he wondered if perhaps people could find happiness not by purchasing more, but rather by complaining less. In this episode, he discusses how we can move towards a complaint-free lifestyle. I thought this would be a cheerful, light interview to round out this year. Enjoy, and happy holidays! - Paula For more information, visit the show notes at http://affordanything.com/episode109

Will Bowen's life has been a quest to understand living. Why, for example, if we all have free will, ambitions, dreams and desires do some of us enjoy health, happiness and prosperity while others struggle their whole lives? Will was born into a family rich with material possessions but desperately poor in love and acceptance. On the outside, things looked good. Inside, however, the family was a swirling vortex of pain, criticism and anger. Will was deeply unhappy and turned to overeating as a coping strategy leaving him morbidly obese as a teenager. At 19, Will set about changing himself and lost over 100 pounds. Graduating college, he went on to an award winning career as a top salesman in media and insurance sales before becoming a Unity Minister in 2003. “The weight that I carried was an external representation of the internal emotional weight I struggled with every day.” Will says, “Becoming thin and even succeeding in business didn't ease the pain I carried inside. It took a purple bracelet that came into my life a few decades later to do that.” In July 2006 Will was teaching a class on prosperity and offered a simple idea of using a purple bracelet for people to monitor their success at breaking the habit of complaining. His idea exploded around the world and more than 11 million purple Complaint Free bracelets have been distributed to people in more than 106 countries. Will's been featured on Oprah, NBC's The Today Show, CBS Sunday Morning, The ABC World News Tonight, Fox & Friends, and in hundreds of TV and radio interviews around the world. In this podcast, Stefan shares with you the 21-Day Complaint Free Challenge. If you want to learn how to stop complaining and experience happiness, you will love this! There is a great movement called “The Complaint Free World”, created by Will Bowen. He talks a lot about the detriments of complaining. He believes that there are five reasons why people complain, which he describes using the acronym, GRIPE (get attention, responsibility, inspire envy, power, and excuse poor performance). Complaining carries destructive power. Always remember that your thoughts create your reality. You need to recondition your mind so that you are able to control your reactions and find empowering, positive meaning from experiences that happen to you. If you do not, you will become a slave to things that are out of your control. In the words of Maya Angelou, “If you don't like something, change it. If you cant change it, change your attitude”. Focus on the positive and join the complaint-free challenge. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

There's a lot of wisdom in Will Bowen's belief that Hurt people, hurt people. It is easy to judge others for their actions. It takes a lot more humanity to look deeply at the tortured soul who would commit crimes, like murder. Dr. James Garbarino has taken that step to actually see the human being behind the crime and to see them as hurt but not beyond redemption. He quotes one killer as saying, I cry myself to sleep every night. Some children can survive childhood abuse, some can heal and others are so damaged that they grow up lacking empathy. These people become abusers and sometimes so many cards are stacked against them that they become killers. In the United States, we tend to punish rather than rehabilitate. Other countries incarcerate for a shorter period of time and have more success with rehabilitation. It turns out that reading and meditating actually create change in the brain, which can change the killer. Please join us Thursday to learn how to save human potential.

Musings on Happiness
We can send positive or negative energy into our own body, into other people's bodies and out into the world. If you've been listening to my show, you know how true this is. That means you have the responsibility of making a conscious choice to create a healthier and happier you while doing the same for the world or choosing to send harm to yourself and others. Every thought we have, word we speak and action we take has serious consequences for our health and that of others. Before we knew this, it was much easier to rant and complain. Once you understand the consequences of that behavior, it's harder to speak unkind words or allow unkind thoughts to sit in our mind, even when (or should I say, especially when?) those thoughts are about ourselves. Actually, my biggest challenge, and the main one I'm working on now, is removing the self-critical thoughts that I grew up with and that have truly become a habit of the mind. Join us Thursday to learn how to stop complaining and hurting.

"New Lives For Old""When it was the right time, John the Baptizer began tellingpeople a message from God" - so says our Scripture lesson today.John the Baptist (as we call him) is obviously known for baptizing people.Actually, he should be remembered for his message - he should be "Johnthe Preacher" not "John the Baptizer" because it was his direct, confrontational preaching that made people remember him. It was hispreaching mouth that got him in trouble, not his baptizing hands. Hismessage? Repent! He told Herod, the ruler of Galilee to repent fortaking his brother's wife, Herodias, as his own. Herodius plotted with herdancing daughter to have John's head - literally - killed as if he were anannoying gnat flying about in the royal box.But Jesus said, "The truth is that John the Baptizer" is greaterthan anyone who has ever come into this world."...(John 11:11)"Before John came, the law of Moses and all the prophets toldabout the things that would happen. And if you believe what theysaid, then John is Elijah. He is the one they said would come. Youpeople who hear me, listen!" (John 11:14)It was the right time for his message of repentance. Before wecan get new lives, we have to dump a lot of junk out of the old life. That'sa two step process - being sorry for what you have done and asking Godto forgive you for all of it.There's a time of repentance built into every communion service, where when we confess our sin, "God is faithful and just to forgive usof our sin and cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness."No wonder John's message was also a welcome one - many peoplewanted to hear it, and to hear it that had to expend a good deal of effort.John planted himself in the middle of nowhere. He set up shop in thewilderness and anyone who wanted to hear what he had to say had to goto a lot of trouble to get there - borrowing the neighbor's donkey perhapsor setting off on foot with enough water for the journey, and going downlonely trails infested with bandits. To hear John preach you had to trek way off into the blazing hotdesert, traverse relentless hills of thick sand and make you way down tothe Jordan River, far away from any city.He was particularly hard on people in organized religion, thePharisees and Sadducees. They didn't go there to hear him except tohear enough so they could find a way to do him in - after all, if he becametoo popular their temples would be empty of people - worse yet theiroffering plates would be empty."You bunch of snakes!" John said, "slithering down here tothe river. Do you think that a little water on your snake skins isgoing to make any difference. It's your life that got to change, notyour skin! If your life is changed, people will be able to tell. You'llbear fruit. And don't think you can pull rank because you are adescendant of Abraham. Descendants of Abraham are a dime adozen. God can take these rocks and make them into descendantsof Abraham. What matters is your life. Is your life green? Is itbearing fruit? Because if it is dead wood then it goes into the fire.Repent! The Kingdom of Heaven is near!"My advise to you is, "Live your life understanding that onlywhat's done for Christ will last."What are these things? Acts of kindness, Works of charity, Visitingthe sick, comforting they who mourn, being more concerned about thewelfare of your wife or husband or significant other than your own.Carrying about with you a spirit of good will and acceptance. Not beingjudgemental, Not complaining. At our last minister's meeting, one of the ministers came with aband on his wrist. Each time you complain about something, you have tomove the band to the other wrist. The goal is to see how long you can gowithout having to do that. How about YOU? Could you last only anhour - a day - a week? The program's goal is to go 21 days. Are all ofyour branches green - or just a few of them. (A Complaint Free Worldby Will Bowen.)I have a senna polifida tree that isn't doing well at all. I have fiveof them in a row. They have exuberant, plentiful yellow blossoms. A fewweeks ago, they all began to bloom - well not all - the one at the endlooked sick - and I thought it was dying. I checked it for any pests thatmight be destroying it, but nothing was to be seen. I hate to tell you this, but I am one of those persons who believe that one species can talk toanother - should talk to each other. I spoke to the tree. I moved itsbranches. I showered it with a little more water than the others. Now, itis in bloom! - not riotously like the others, but a nice grouping of blossomson the branches that were not dead after all. Those that are - thedeadwood, I assume I will have to trim off. This is then the place in the sermon where you need to decidewhat deadwood you need to get rid of - repent of. Anything that keepsyou from your goal of Christlikeness has to go. Repent! "He will burnthe useless part with a fire that cannot be stopped."God is speaking to us today - moving OUR branches, nourishingus with His love - the God who can make our branches bloom with goodworks. "He will separate the good grain from the straw, and he illput the good part into his barn."All you have to do is make a conscious decision to give priority tothose things that will grow your spirit. The Network of Spiritual Progressive is committed to fostering anew consciousness so that we allow ourselves to know that the mostsignificant and rewarding part of our lives comes through:*Acts of love and generosity*Kindness to humans and animals*Caring for and giving to other without expectation of reward ora "return on the investment of our time and energy.*Work that is fulfilling both in its process and in the sense it givesus that we are contribution to the public good.*Awe at the grandeur of creation*The experience of being recognized on the deepest level of ourbeing and recognizing others in that way.*Acknowledging our connection to something larger than ourselvesand seeing our lives in the context of service to the ultimate triumph oflove, goodness, justice and peace. That's fine for us, but how are we doing as a nation, as a world? Is it time for a call to repentance there? Is the world getting better orworse? I always say that progress is backwards. Waiting the other dayfor replies to several e-mails and needing one in particular, I had anamazingly brilliant thought - Why not use the telephone?! That way Iwould get an immediate answer, and it wouldn't be just words on a pagebut hearing the vibrant, wonderful voice of the friend I was calling, and Iwould be able to get a feeling of how he was doing - not just by thewords, but by the tone of voice. And the internet - much as I love Google - I was appalled by thecruel trick played by one teenager on another - the one, a girl, pretendingto be a handsome young man, communicating with her neighbor a fewdoors down, getting her very attached to "him" then having him dump hersaying all kinds of cruel things to her. Only after she had hung herself, didher parents learn that there was no such young man, only a girl down thestreet playing tricks on an unsuspecting, sensitive soul. What is happeningin our world. Young people are getting more and more cruel to each otherand to the adults around them. The suicide incident was part ofa program depicting the growing cruelty and irresponsibility being manifestedin our young people including a college student who, driving drunk, killedone girl and made an invalid of another. She fled back to her native Peruwhere she continued to drink and drive and even wrote a song braggingabout her driving experiences. Where is John the Baptist when he's needed?Who will call us to repentance - we all have things of which we need torepent. Jesus will.Jesus calls us to repentance, not to make us feel bad aboutourselves, but to free us from the darkness and deadness that drags usdown. Then he setts us on a pathway of service and fulfillment - heads usfor home - the eternal home He has prepared for us from the foundationof the world. One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after;that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, tobehold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple. For inthe time of trouble he shall hid me in his pavilion: in the secret ofhis tabernacle shell he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies roundabout me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy;I will sing, yea I will sing praises unto the Lord.Change your hearts! And show by the way you live that you havechanged. A good indicator of that is your checkbook which will showamong other things how much you give to yourself and how much to God.I hope everybody got the pledge letter from our church Treasurer,Edwin Scharlau - how anybody could resist it I just can't figure. Sincethere are more of you here who haven't pledged than have, I assumemany of you didn't get it. He referred to all the special moments thechurch provides you - your wedding, your child's baptism, agranddaughters 1st birthday, delicious food, the incomparable karaokiesinging by church members, dancing the "chicken dance at the Octoberfest,- sitting in your pew with some of the same people around you week afterweek, being greeted at the church door as you walk in, the sermons forchildren, the sermons for serious Christians. He says, "I'm sure youhave your own moments you look forward to on Sunday mornings athe Miami Beach Community Church - from the spiritual to thesimple. " Then he suggests that we all bear the fruit of good stewardship, that the Church can go forward in strength and its message heard. Bearfruit. "Change your hearts and show by the way your live that youhave changed!" (Mt. 3:8)Today's message is "Repent!". May we pray. Each of us Lord, have things for which we repent, things we have done, things we havefailed to do, things for which others cannot forgive us, things for which wecannot forgive ourselves. Even the remembrance of them grieves usseverely. In these moments, as we repent earnestly of our sins, "Forgiveus all that is past and grant that we may evermore serve thee innewness of life to the honor and glory of Thy Holy name.
