It's been a long time since our last lifewitholddogs podcast episode, so we thought it would be a great idea to look back on 2023 and share our plans for 2024. The past year has been quite a journey! We had to bid farewell to four of our beloved residents, including two who had been with us for a long time. We faced the challenge of having very few volunteers, but we also welcomed one new resident and two adorable puppies into our sanctuary. On top of all that, we made the decision to relocate to another state and expand our sanctuary. While many other rescues have sadly shut down, we are determined to grow in order to support more senior German Shepherds in need. If you're curious about what's in store, be sure to check out this video for all the details!*EDIT * Hemangiosarcoma. I misspoken in the podcast. Imagine a place where wagging tails and wet noses fill the yard—a dog rescue dedicated to rescuing German Shepherds in need. In this episode of the #lifewitholddogs podcast, we step into the world of the German Shepherd Rescue of the Finger Lakes for an inside look at what it truly means to run their dog rescue organization. Being the president of a dog rescue organization is not for the faint of heart, and Megan Spaulding, the Founding President of the German Shepherd Rescue of the Finger Lakes, knows this all too well. From handling emergencies in the middle of the night to managing volunteers, her days are anything but predictable.Running a dog rescue requires a deep understanding and love for animals, but it also demands business acumen and organizational skills. Megan spends countless hours coordinating fundraisers, reaching out to potential adopters, and ensuring that each dog receives proper veterinary care and one-on-one time. The emotional toll of dog rescue is undeniable - she has seen neglected and abused dogs come through her doors with heartbreaking stories, but she also knows the dogs she serves are well worth it. She is their advocate, and she fights for their chance at a better life.To learn more about German Shepherd Rescue of the Finger Lakes and all the great work they do, and to see their adoptable dogs, visit: https://gsrfingerlakes.org/They are also on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/www.GSRFingerLakes.orgInstagram: @germanshepherdrescuefingerlakeThe German Shepherd Rescue of the Finger Lakes is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and rehoming German Shepherds. There I was. I was about to put off my workout for yet another week. Life was spinning out of control. Perhaps my job was getting too overwhelming… You see, I struggled with weight gain and depression after I lost my wife in a car accident. I was taking care of our 4 dogs, 2 cats, and 1 parrot, I also ran our German Shepherd Rescue. I was a full-time teacher and I ran a video and web production company from home. Life seemed to spin out of control, I wanted to use exercise to be my therapy, but it became more and more convenient to put it off. No Time. No Motivation. No energy. I needed to take control. In this episode, I will share how I overcame my exercise excuses. Susan Shahoda is a lifelong dog lover who has devoted much of the past 15 years to volunteering with Westside German Shepherd Rescue in Los Angeles, CA. But don't let the name fool you – Westside rescues dogs of all shapes & sizes and adopts to families throughout the continental U.S. and Canada. In fact, Westside is celebrating 20 years and 20,000 dogs finding loving homes! What should potential adopters look for in a rescue organization? Why are those adoption applications so long? How do rescues determine which dogs get chosen? And what do rescues really think about people who can't keep their dogs anymore? Susan gives us a true behind-the-scenes view of running a rescue organization. Susan also shares her thoughts on the unsung heroes of the animal welfare community, the surprising benefit of the Nextdoor App, the best & the hardest parts of rescue and what keeps her going even in the tough times. We'll also learn how Susan's life has been touched by Laurel, a special needs German Shepherd Dog who suffers from permanent neurological damage after contracting Canine Distemper virus. In the season of giving, your generosity is appreciated by organizations like Westside German Shepherd Rescue and your local animal shelter and rescue groups. I am often asked how to overcome excuses when it comes to exercise. I usually give tips generic enough to help a person out so that they can take action. then I started thinking about how I struggled with weight gain and depression after I lost my wife in a car accident. I now had all the house responsibilities along with taking care of our 4 dogs, 2 cats, and 1 parrot, I also ran our German Shepherd Rescue. I was a full-time teacher and I ran a video and web production company from home. I had so many excuses not to exercise. No Time. No Motivation. No energy. In this episode, you will learn how I overcame my exercise excuses and got into the best shape of my life. When you take on a rescue dog, it's tough to know what they've been through and even with experience of dogs before, it can be a long journey to work with and help them through. This week, we speak with a very valued member and volunteer for German Shepherd Rescue who's been on her own journey with her reactive GSD, Jess. For more details or see more of Jess' journey, you can click through to here and secure your space: https://3sts.co.uk/evo/
“When I die, I intend to ask God if I can stay at the Rainbow Bridge instead of going into heaven because there are so many pets that go to the rainbow bridge without ever having known the love and compassion of a human being." That’s what my late wife, Terri, wrote in an email about a rescue dog, Merlin, who suddenly passed away. November 2003 A few weeks later my wife was suddenly taken from us in a tragic car accident. Terri was a rescuer of animals and people. She founded Arf’s German Shepherd Rescue, Inc in 2002. Terri has gone to the Rainbow Bridge to give love and hope to animals that are no longer with us on Earth. In this episode, I share her story to hopefully inspire you to live your life with purpose. We never know how much time we have here on this earth, so every day matters. What does it mean to live your purpose? Let's talk about how to find your purpose and make the most of each and every day. LINKS: Morning Success Habits - Grab Your Free Copy! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - WANT MORE? I have to say, recording these podcasts has been an incredible experience for me, as I am learning so much from each and every guest. Jen Shryock is another passionate expert that I had the pleasure of chatting with, and learned more about children and dogs, and how we can keep both safe. We talk about what to look for as red flags for potential problems between kids and dogs, how we can help to educate the public about dog bite safety with children, and even discuss the rare, but serious topic of predatory behaviors directed at infants. Aggression in Dogs Conference The Aggression in Dogs Master CourseJennifer Shryock is a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC), owner of Family Paws™ LLC in Cary, NC and holds a degree in Special Education. Jennifer is also former VP of Doggone Safe a non-profit dedicated to dog bite prevention and victim support.Jennifer also has proudly served on the board member of the International Childbirth Education Association. A recognized expert on dog and baby/toddler interactions and safety, Jennifer has written and spoken extensively about these topics. Her two programs, Dogs & Storks® and Dogs & Toddlers™ have been featured in national media such as The Wall Street Journal, Martha Stewart LIVING along with many TV and radio appearances. In 2000 The Shryock family adopted their first German Shepherd Rescue dog. Subsequently Jennifer became involved with the rescue organization as a counselor and trainer finding herself supporting families with babies or young children who, overwhelmed by the challenges of their situation, were often on the verge of surrendering an otherwise beloved dog.As a Mother, dog behavior consultant and teacher… Jennifer recognized a need for support and education for these families and began building resources for new and expecting families through her own business Family Paws. A consistent need for this specialized service led to the creation of the highly endorsed international program Dogs & Storks® for expecting and adopting families and then years later Dogs & Toddlers™, for families with babies 3 months of age and up. All of these passions and ideas have led to the creation of Family Paws™ Parent Education now offering programs all of the United States, Canada and beyond! Jennifer has mentored and supported hundreds of dog trainers all over the world and continues to support families in her community and beyond.Jennifer lives in Cary, North Carolina, with her husband, 4 children, 2 dogs, and 4 cats.

This morning veteran dog rescuer Sylva Kelegian visits the program. She's an actress who you've probably seen in many of your favorite TV shows over the years and she is currently on stage in Los Angeles in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play called, “'night, Mother." But in between acting on stage and screen and rescuing homeless pets, she's managed to write a very cool book called God Spelled Backwards and we're going to hear all about that shortly. Then, after our halftime break, Maria Dales will be sharing news about German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County.
You may remember that we've addressed the issue of military dogs in the past. Now I had always thought that military dogs were considered personnel just like their human counterparts, afforded all the same honor and benefits after a lifetime of service and retirement; but I was really disappointed to find out a few years back that his wasn't the case at all. Well, the American Humane Association has been working to change this for some time and they are making progress. To update us on the status of our honored military canines, Robin Ganzert, the President of the American Humane Association will be checking in shortly to give us all an in-depth report. And after our halftime break, Maria Dales from German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County has a great story to tell about how competing in a beauty pageant has raised money for homeless pets. And believe me, if anyone can win a beauty pageant, it's Maria who is one of the most beautiful people I know, inside and out! -Marie Hulett, Host of The Pet Place

Susan Daffron talks to Jayne Nielsen from German Shepherd Rescue of Northern California about a dog named Imelda. Jayne calls Imelda "Miss Daisy on four-legs." Although Imelda was a bit shy when she came into rescue, this senior German Shepherd is spunky and full of life. Jayne points out that most dogs in rescue have been neglected, not abused. In Imelda's case, when she came into rescue, it looked like she hadn't been brushed once in her seven years.
