These new California driving laws take effect in 2025. Mental Health Matters. Internet Startup CEO, Greg Isenberg, details a lunch he had with a 22-yr-old who appeared to not he able to hold a conversation. Last week on X/Twitter, CEO Greg Isenberg posted an anecdote that has since gone viral online. His post: Just had a fascinating lunch with a 22-year-old Stanford grad. Smart kid. Perfect resume. Something felt off though. He kept pausing mid-sentence, searching for words. Not complex words - basic ones. Like his brain was buffering. Finally asked if he was okay. His response floored me. "Sometimes I forget words now. I'm so used to having ChatGPT complete my thoughts that when it's not there, my brain feels... slower." He'd been using AI for everything. Writing, thinking, communication. It had become his external brain. And now his internal one was getting weaker. Made me think about calculators. Remember how teachers said we needed to learn math because "you won't always have a calculator"? They were wrong about that. But maybe they were right about something deeper. We're running the first large-scale experiment on human cognition. What happens when an entire generation outsources their thinking? Don't get me wrong, I'm beyond excited about what AI and AI agents will do for people in the same way that I was excited in 2009 when the App Store was launched. But thinking out loud you got to think this guy I met with isn't the only one that's going to be completely dependent on AI.> The Year in Brain Rot.

Hello everyone and welcome to Episode One Hundred and Three! And while we're at it, I hope you all remain safe and healthy out there, including all the folks who are recovering in the aftermath of hurricanes Helene and Milton. As always, I am grateful to all the show's patrons who help to keep the show moving forward. And if you're out there listening and you would like to kick in a few bucks, it's easy to do, you simply go to the So Much Pingle Patreon page. You can support the show for as little as three bucks a month – less than a fancy cup of coffee! PLEASE NOTE: Starting in November 2024, Apple will be charging a 30% fee for any Patreon transactions made through an iPhone or iPad using the Patreon app. To get around this, go directly to Patreon.com, or use an Android device. If you already contribute to So Much Pingle, nothing changes, unless you decide to change how much you contribute. In that case use an Android device or a computer to access the Patreon web site to make your changes, and avoid the ridiculous 30% fee. You can also support the show via one-time contributions via PayPal or Venmo (please contact me via email to somuchpingle@gmail.com). And thank you! In early October I sat down with Bob Hansen and Jackson Shedd, to talk about their new book, California Amphibians and Reptiles, a Princeton Field Guide. I'm very excited about this, as I am sure many of you are, because California is most deserving of a good field guide and now I won't have to rely on Robert Stebbins' Western Field Guide so much, even though the old Stebbins guide is a masterpiece in its own right. I've known for a while about this book, and I made a mental note to check in with Bob and Jackson at the appropriate time to discuss it, which is now, because the book is available for pre-order this week, mid-October 2024, with delivery in January of 2025. Here is the pre-order link at Princeton University Press Thanks for talking with me, Jackson and Bob! And thanks for listening everyone! And as always, please keep the comments and suggestions coming, and please take time to rate the show on your podcast platform! The show email is somuchpingle@gmail.com, and there's also a So Much Pingle group on Facebook, for discussion, comments, feedback, suggestions, herp confessions, tips for herping better, etc. -Mike

Multiple cities throughout California have seen temperatures way above 90 degrees this week. Workers, both indoors and outdoors, are feeling the heat, but for the first time ever, indoor workers finally have protections against excessive heat in the workplace. At the end of last month, state officials unveiled new rules of what's required in indoor workplaces when temperatures surpass 82 degrees. You've probably heard of the term “lipstick on a pig.” In house-flipping parlance, it means doing basic cosmetic upgrades that camouflage the underlying issues beneath the paint and Sheetrock. California house flippers will have to put their makeup away and bring out the heavy machinery because a new law—Assembly Bill 968 (AB-968), effective July 1—mandates a comprehensive disclosure of repairs and renovations from sellers who flip one-to-four-unit properties within 18 months of buying them. The intent is to protect buyers from undisclosed and unseen property conditions. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
