Our Emotional Connection to Pets and how it impact our lives

So many of our listeners have pets that they cherish and certainly have shared struggles they might have with these animals.  I am a great animal lover and many of my clients have found solace in their relationships with pets in the home, at times feeling a great emotional boost from the connection.   With this in mind, I wanted to share the work of Denise Mange – who has written about her special approach to building a health relationship with the pets in your life.   A bark is not always just a bark and a bite is not always just a bite. Training a dog (or other animal) involves more than just a handful of techniques from google; it also involves YOU, the pet parent. Common pet behaviors reveal a lot about your lifestyle, job, and other connections in addition to the dynamic you have with your pet. Denise Mange's new book “Translating Your Pet's Behaviour: A Mindful Approach to Dog Training” teaches readers how to train smarter, not harder and help close the gap between canine training and your own personal growth.   Listen to our conversation with animal / dog trainer Denise Mange as discuss tools to unlock a deeper understanding of dog/animal training when paired with a thoughtful approach to pet guardianship.   Denise Mange is a “certified dog trainer” and pet intuitive (we will find out what this mean!). Denise left Madison Avenue to work with pets and their owners after ten years of working at New York City's most prominent advertising firms. She is the founder of Pet Prana, a brand that promotes a mindful pet lifestyle. Denise obtained her bachelor's degree from Boston University, and her accreditation as a dog trainer from Animal Behavior College.   In addition to exploring useful behavior training techniques for dogs, fundamental obedience commands, and activities based on positive reinforcement dog training, Denise's book on dog behavior will teach you how to interpret your pet's on-leash reactivity, separation anxiety, barking, nipping, housebreaking accidents, and more. In order to assist you in bringing about significant and long-lasting change in both your dog's behavior and your own life, Denise Mange has created a tried-and-true methodology that reveals the ways in which our behaviors, attitudes, and routines affect our pets. Her book is an extensive resource ideal for pet training, assisting stray dogs in adjusting to their new homes, comforting elderly pets, or just finding new ways to interact with cherished animals.   Listen to our conversation with Denise Mange as we discuss her insightful approach to dog training that has proven to deliver transformative results.   Links & Resources: More information about Denise Mange: https://petprana.com/about.html#/ Information on the book visit: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/209824741-translating-your-pet-s-behavior?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=V1M5tSYkiR&rank=1  Learn more about Pet Prana: https://petprana.com/index.html#/

Every year in the United States, 134,400 cats are surrendered to county shelters because of behavior issues. Of course, that number doesn't include the cats that are simply kicked outside, left behind, or sent to private shelters. Unless neurological disorder is involved, a Cat Behaviorist can help you and your cat! If every cat parent reached out to a Cat Behaviorist, we could prevent 134,400 cats EVERY year from going into a shelter, and maybe never coming back out! In this episode of 19 Cats and Counting, Rita and Linda chat with Pam Webster, a recent graduate from Animal Behavior College, to discuss naughty behaviors and what Cat Behaviorists are doing to help keep these kitties in happy, loving, forever homes! My name is Heather Szasz and I have over 12 years of professional dog training experience, as well as experience as a life coach for a world-wide company. Having extensive experience in both dog training and life coaching has given me a unique outlook and ability to be very successful with working with dog owners and the behavior issues with their dogs. I started my career as a dog trainer 30 years ago in England when I was the owner of my first puppy--an airedale terrier named Sharka. I trained with Geoff Grinham, the author of the book Dog Training and Behavior. You will find many pictures of Sharka and myself in Geoff Grinham's book. However, please remember that was 30 years ago, so I do look a bit different today! Life took a left turn, as I ended up in Florida for 22 years. I had not been certified as a dog trainer in England, so I chose to begin a residential house cleaning business. After a few years, I sold the my cleaning business and said to myself, "What do I really want to do?" My answer was that I really want to be a certified Professional Dog Trainer, so I went to the Animal Behavior College and graduated! For the last 12 years, I have worked with many one-on-one clients, taught agility classes for fun, and mentored students from the Animal Behavior College. I have worked with rescues, volunteered for nine years, and spent the last two of those years as a trainer in a prisoner/shelter dog program. In total, we have trained and adopted 75 dogs! My focus now is on coaching owners in how to influence their dog in a positive way through transforming our anxiety and negativity which our dogs are living with on a daily basis. Remember Happy Owner/Happy Dog! Please check The Balance Procedure Page for more information on how to take control of your energy and how that will affect your dog's behavior. This episode is sponsored in part by Tamadori and Doobert.com. Steve Appelbaum has more than 40 years of dog training and pet industry experience. He is the creator of Animal Behavior College (ABC) which provides many different pet industry certifications. ABC started off with only programs for dog training but Steve noticed a big problem with cats being surrendered or euthanized for treatable behavioral problems, so he set out to fix this problem. Steve and Stacy debunk the myth that cats can’t be trained and discuss how training cats isn’t about teaching obedience like it is for dogs, but actually treating behavioral problems. Steve gives some  tips on how to train your cat for going to the vet and shares how enrichment and training go hand in hand. We in the animal welfare community know there is a shortage of veterinary assistants and veterinarians; Stacy and Steve talk about how ABC’s veterinary assistant program is their most popular program and they expect to have 2200 students enrolled in the next year. In this episode of Handling Business, we sit down with Kim Sauer of Sit n’ Stay Professional Pet Services who is a true expert and leader in the pet care industry. Kim Sauer's fascination with dog training took off in 1997 when she started assisting a local trainer using a clicker in exchange for helping her with her own aggressive dog. Kim opened her pet sitting and dog walking business, Sit n' Stay Pet Services in hopes that the fields would complement each other. Kim hired her first employee in 2005 and has steadily increased in size over the years to now have 30 pet sitters and dog walks, an office manager and 5 trainers on her team. Kim first earned her certificate from Animal Behavior College in January 2002 becoming an ABC Certified Dog Trainer and then later became a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) in March of 2006. Kim believes that every animal (and human), come into your life to teach you something. In this episode you’ll learn how to... -Become a certified trainer and develop a solid program or partner with other programs who already have great resources, handouts and outlines -Enroll in a dog training program with CATCH Dog Trainers Academy, Karen Pryor Academy or Animal Behavior College, and work towards becoming a Certified Professional Dog Trainer which is a separate certification from a dog training program -Become a mentor trainer through CATCH or PetTech as a way to give back to your community and bring in a good flow of potential dog trainers for your growing dog training business -Find great employees and motivate them to be dedicated to your team long term Books that Kim loves… -Entreleadership by Dave Ramsey -The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks Favorite takeaway… “You can’t train people to be friendly, you need to hire friendly people. You can teach people how to take great care of animals, but you can’t always train people to have a certain personality type."
