Play Episode Listen Later Mar 16, 2021 82:53

There's so much that has happened over the course of the last year. So many major events and tragedies that will certainly be in the history books. This pandemic has been life-altering to say the least. From loss of jobs and income, to financial instability and loss of precious life, this has been a strange and tragic time for so many. We wanted to take time in this episode to reflect, breathe, and remember. And tell the story of life, one year later. Life moves fast and things happen at a rapid pace. This year in quarantine has felt like ten years for some and for others, a day. This pandemic has revealed what many of us already knew. Inequality and inequities were laid bare for all of us to see. The unequal infections rates. The poverty that millions of people easily slipped into. The uneven distribution of resources and aid. The government response or lack thereof. The mental health effects are yet to be fully understood and the vaccine roll-out is further proof that there is much work to be done. Collective healing is what we need from this tragic period in our history. We are still in the midst, and still processing, the toll this pandemic has taken on our country. We take this time to remember and acknowledge the bravery and resilience of our collective human spirit to move forward and help each other heal. We also say the names of our fallen for this week, Priscilla Slater and Xzavier Hill AND we highlight 2 activists doing great work in their communities, Gary Chambers and You Are Essential. This is the second show in a series in which we explore the concept of capitalism and its effects on serious issues facing us in this time. Homelessness is a problem that has been made worse by the effects of an unregulated form of capitalism. If we stop for a minute and observe our surroundings, we can see that this problem hasn't gotten any better in the last 20 years. Despite policy and public outcry, the solutions we propose are not working. There is a stigma about homelessness and homeless people. This cultural attitude has to change if we have any hope of offering a new vision on how to solve this problem. In this episode we talk about the devastating effects this crisis is having on our communities. The rates of homeless families have gone up, there are more youth experiencing homelessness now than ever before, and our response as a human family must change because the old ways of doing business aren't working. We also cover the cottage industry of anti-homeless architecture in major American cities and what charity organizations are doing to alleviate the suffering and help the most vulnerable. We also say the names of our fallen for this week, Corey Stingley and give an update on the George Flyod case, AND we highlight two activists doing great work in their communities, NOHO Home Alliance and Love Beyond Walls. The next few episodes follow a theme. Here at Unlearn Relearn we have noticed that no matter the topic discussed, we keep coming back to a common underlying root of the problem. That root stems from the pervasive and destructive nature of an unregulated disastrous form of capitalism. In this episode, we take a look at how the dangerous effects of climate change are further exacerbated by local, state, and federal government inaction at best and willful neglect at worst. Climate Change makes storms, hurricanes, fires, and flooding worse. Add that to government policy that doesn't begin to address the need and solve the problem and what you get is a national emergency that quickly turns into a national tragedy. From flooding in Gulf states due to hurricanes to fires in California made worse by government neglect to snow storms in Texas that leave millions without power and some to literally freeze to death, We see in case after case that the most vulnerable, poor and working class, bear the brunt of the effects of both the weather event and the aftermath of government inaction and corporate greed. These are conversations that we need to have so that we may begin the process of re-imagining what our world can and should look like and then working to elect politicians that will enact this change. We also say the names of our fallen this week, Rekia Boyd, Joshua Cole Cooper, and Anderson Retic AND We highlight two organizations doing great work in their communities, Retail, Wholesale, Department Store Union Local 338 and Joycelyn Longdon with Climate In Color. For the last few weeks we challenged the way we think about Black History Month. There has always been a tenuous relationship between Black People and this time of the year. Prevailing thought in certain communities was often geared towards harsh criticism around how an underhandedly racists society celebrates a people's history it often fails to acknowledge. To say that most Black people are skeptical that America can "get it right" is an understatement. We all know the mainstream media does not cover this month with the seriousness and reverence it deserves. Our chief complaint has been that only approved and sanitized historical figures are allowed to be discussed. And those people that made a huge impact but also may have shown the worst parts of American history were simply left out of the narrow discussion. In this episode we tell the history of how this month-long, yearly celebration came to be. There are so many stories that need to be told and so many people that need to be made famous for their contribution to this country's rich history. This episode is by no means your only work when it comes to Black History Month. Find the resources and do your own work. We also say the names of our fallen for this week, Preston Chaney and Sgt James Brown, AND we highlight two activist organizations doing great work in their communities, Angel By Nature and Yanawana Herbalarios. Here at Unlearn Relearn, we maintain the position that most politicians are not our friends. They are put in positions of leadership and power to do a job. That job is to use the levers of the government to help to improve the lives of the people they serve. Our job is to be vigilant and keep the watchful eye on not only what they say but what they do. In the process of the last election cycle, we operated under the understanding that Joe Biden wasn't our first choice, nor was he our second or third. He was the best option this broken system could produce as an alternative to Trump. We voted for him clear eyed and fully aware of his flaws and past history of being on the wrong side of many issues. Which is why advocacy organizations have mobilized to be a direct challenge to some of the moderate and corporate influences that are present in his team and policy proposals. Our job is to hold him and his administration accountable. Black and Brown support for his candidacy was at an all-time high. Young voters came out in droves for him. Climate change activists mobilized for his campaign. These groups have demands and are mounting pressure campaigns to raise awareness and force this administration to do the things we need him to do. In this episode we talk about all of these people that are using their influence to make the change we want to see real. From minimum wage increase, climate policy, economic justice, criminal justice reform to ending the wars, student-loan debt forgiveness, and jump-starting this economy, we have much work to do and little time to waste. We also say the names of our fallen for this week, Victor White III, Clyde Kerr II AND Two activists doing great work in our community, The Denver Star Program and Asian Youth Act. Play Episode Listen Later Feb 9, 2021 73:15

If there is anything we learned over the last 10 plus years, it's that people can go a little crazy in the way they idolize elected leaders. Politics have turned into entertainment; less about the issues and more focus on blue vs red. The Trump era showed this in obvious and extreme ways, although, the Trump phenomena sadly was not an aberration. We saw this same craziness during the Obama years, and many presidencies before that. Sadly, it is no different with Biden and Harris with all the "Democracy is restored" and "We can all rest now" talk. The absolute last thing we should do is idolize politicians. We elect them to do a job, represent us, and make our lives better, not get famous and become celebrities. They deserve at best Luke-warm support and in normal times, harsh criticism. We make these people famous and then we spend time defending them even when they do and say things that go directly against our own best interests. In this episode, we talk about the consequences of failing to do your part in keeping these people accountable. The key word in that last sentence is "people". They are human beings prone to mistakes and failings. It is our job to stay vigilant and tied to our policy goals so we know when the person is doing what we need them to do and raise hell when they're not. They are not your friend, they are not God. They are there to do a job. Let's hold them to that task and save the rest for later. We also say the names of our fallen for this week, Desmond Philips and Sandra Bland AND we highlight two activists organizations doing great work, Real Justice Pac and Hope Of The Valley. Although President Trump is gone, we're still living with the repercussions and consequences of a failed administration. One of the worst realities of the past 4 years has been the resurgence of the Death Penalty. The prior administration presided over 13 federally sanctioned executions, more than had been done in the last 17 years. We dedicate this episode to this relic of inhumane treatment of human beings. There are problems with how this specific form of justice is not only applied, but who is disproportionately affected by it. It seems, as has been proven in most things American, the race, class, and gender of the defendant determines who this barbaric form of justice is applied to. With the advancements in technology, we have also seen how many people have been sent to death row only to have their convictions overturned. This is shocking, alarming, and should warrant the complete abolition of this system. We also talk about this controversial topic in an attempt to highlight what solutions can be found and how we need to change social norms to leave this form of so-called justice where it belongs, the dustbin of history. Since the events of January 6th 2021, we've learned more about what happened and more details of the nature of the threat. In this episode we break down some of the stories that might have fallen through the cracks or got very little attention by the mainstream press. There are allegations of fore-knowledge by some of the rioters, accounts that members of congress or their staff gave tours to some of the rioters that came back the next day. We are learning how close certain members of congress came to being captured. Also, the scope of police and military involvement in the attack. How these attackers communicated with each other through certain apps and the free speech implications of this technology. There were thousands of people that showed up for the protest and many of them got caught up in the moment of storming the capital and for that they should suffer the necessary consequences. However, there was a concerted effort by some to enter the Capitol with plans, schematics, and a mission to cause real lethal harm. These people need to be hunted down and brought to the appropriate justice. Lastly, we talk about where we go from here and how we get back to both sides working with the truth to move our country forward. We live in strange times. Strange times, indeed. We went on break for the holidays, taking a little more time than expected as Wilson got and recovered from Covid. So we come back healthy and ready to go into season 2 of Unlearn Relearn, and what a time to return! Donald Trump, the guy we're still calling President, incited a coup attempt against the US Capitol this past week. Thousands stormed the Capitol ending with 5 people dead and dozens injured. This just one day after the State of Georgia voted and gave US Senate control to the Democrats. What a wild week this has been. In this episode we try our best to cover what was one of the most consequential weeks in American history. A Black man won a Senate seat in Georgia for the first time ever. He made history. That was Tuesday. That is what we should have been talking about and celebrating, but instead we are here talking about the events of Wednesday, because it almost ended American Democracy. We do our best to break down what happened and give details on the context and atmosphere created that lead up to this moment. Racism, bigotry, and antisemitism are as American as ever. We must learn the lessons from this tragedy so that we never repeat it. For better or worse, this is who we are. It is up to us, individually and collectively, to change that for the better. This year has been like moving from one slow moving train crash to another while passing shit show after shit show on the way. In this episode we review the stories and people that meant the most to us over the past year. We left some stories out. We left some people out. Some of the biggest stories of this year would have been the only thing we talked about in years past but they barely registered in a year like this one. From the Coronavirus to the death of George Floyd, the massive protests that happened this past summer, the economic crash, The President and all of his nonsense, It seems like we were hit with one crazy event after the other. So in this episode we try and put this crazy ass year into some sort of perspective while pointing our attention towards the future. Organizations have been registering voters since at least 2016 for a possible outcome such as this. Here at Unlearn Relearn, we are not fans of any of the candidates on either side. This episode brought up many feelings and emotions around judging our levels of engagement in the fight for equality and equity. We've been having conversations with friends and the team around: if how much you do is enough and if there's more you can do? There will always be the persistent feeling of being inadequate or not doing enough. Part of the work is developing the tools and resources to manage that feeling. In this episode we talk about how doing what you can, when you can, for as long as you can, is more than enough. There are those that can do everything from showing up to the protests marches and rallies, take the public actions, make the phone calls, and be in the scene of an active protestor. Then, there are those that believe in the cause and support the mission that simply can not do those things. So we encourage them to do what you can. Whether that is reposting account's info, sharing info supporting march goers, bail funds, advocacy groups, voting, or simply educating yourself so that if and when you have these conversations, you can speak from a place of competent proficiency. We must get involved in organizations that are mobilizing a proper response and putting the necessary pressure where it can be applied to let this next administration know: we are watching you and we will speak up when you make moves that harm the people. We also discuss how local elected officials were affected by organized movements and how thoughtful strategy can be applied to affect the change we want to see. We say the names of our fallen this week, Quawan Charles and Michiah Lee. And we highlight two people doing great work in our space, Oklahoma State Legislator Mauree Turner and Dr. Akilah Cadet, doing work with companies on anti-racism, diversity, inclusion, and equity. We want you to stay safe in these crazy times. Covid is out of control. Please do not travel if you don't have to. Let's make the sacrifice for each other this holiday season and stay home. The holidays are here. And we are still in the middle of a global pandemic. This year has forced us to re-evaluate many aspects of our lives. How we spend our money is no different. We live in a consumer driven economy. Which means in order for things to work around here, we must go out and spend our money. According to the system, what we buy makes no difference so long as we buy stuff. Do we need it? Do we even want it? It doesn't matter. What matters is that we spend. Over here at Unlearn Relearn, we want to promote the idea that if you're going to spend your money, be aware of the local options available. Make the conscious decision to spend your money where it will help the most and do the most good. We also talk about how spending habits have changed because of the impact of the pandemic. How personal austerity affects what we buy and the frequency of our purchases and how corporations treat their employees can have a major impact on if we buy from them or not. We say the names of our fallen this week. Jonathan Price, Quintonio LeGrier, and Bettie Jones. And we highlight Dominique Walker from Moms For Housing working on housing insecurity in Oakland, California AND Sonia Ross--Licensed Clinical Social Worker, working on body and mind relationship healing with black women. The election was about 2 weeks ago. The nation spoke and elected Joe Biden as our next President. There's one person that seems to have not caught up with reality and that's the current President. He's spreading misinformation, lies, and undermining the integrity of our election and our democracy. We have to call this madness out and set the record straight. We would all love to move on from this dark chapter in our history. Trump is hell bent on dragging us all down with him. In this episode we talk about the various lawsuits the president and his team have filed over supposed voter fraud and how each one is being dismissed due to lack of evidence. We talk about how Trump has blocked the transition process from going forward and how his election defense fund is nothing more than a last minute money grab to pay off campaign debts and line his pockets on the way out the door. We're all wondering what would happen if Trump lost and now we have our answer. He's going to make this next 2 months as difficult as possible. We say the names of our fallen this week, revisiting the tragic story of Latahsa Harlins and giving an update on the trial of men accused of the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. We also highlight Public Academic Rachel Cargle and ACLU SoCal doing great work in southern California. Are you ready to pivot? Are you ready to move forward? What a week. We are living through extraordinary and historic times indeed. The election is over and the fall out begins. Joe Biden will be the next President. Kamala Harris will be the next Vice-President. Here at Unlearn and Relearn, we are not fans of either one of them. Our work now will be to highlight their records as we hold them accountable for their actions going forward. Also, we need to break down what happened in the vote count. Trump increased his vote total to record levels only bested by Joe Biden who got more votes. At least 140 million people voted in this election. The most ever. While this is an amazing development, we can't overlook the demographics of who voted and what that means for our work going forward. There were a few bright spots none-the-less. Drug legalization and decriminalization passed all over the country, propositions that help our most vulnerable passed, and politicians that needed to go, got gone. We also cover the power of organizing and mobilizing and how those efforts had a direct and immediate effect on the results of this election. This was a mixed bag election. Some things to be excited about and other things that point the way towards how much work is left to be done. We say the names of our fallen for this week Charles Roundtree Jr. and Terrence Clutcher AND we highlight Author Layla Saad (Me And White Supremacy) for setting up a blueprint for competent anti-racism work and the Committee Of Seventy, doing work on voter engagement, registration, and holding elected officials accountable in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area. There is much work to be done and we are only getting started. So take a break if you need to, relax, reset, and get back into the fight. The US 2020 Election is today. If you haven't voted, please do so. In light of the moment and all the work we've done to get to this point, we wanted to take this opportunity to talk about the reasons we joined this fight. What started out as an episode about our motivations for doing this work ended up being a review of some of our most important show topics. Everything from racism in the wellness space to de-funding the police. This work has given us the privilege of learning more about what's happening in this country and also the great organizations doing amazing work to help solve the problems or alleviate the pain caused by them. No matter what happens in this election, the fight continues. Justice For All is the main objective. When we talk about racism there is no way we can not mention Climate Change and it's impact on marginalized communities. Environmental racism is affecting the most vulnerable in the most destructive ways. Hurricanes are worse than they've ever been. Sea levels are rising. Droughts are more desperate and wild fires set new records every year with how much of our forest is burned. In this episode we talk about a subject, one that is easily worth hours and hours of discussion, and look at it from one specific angle-- climate change and its effects on black, brown, and poor people in America. This crisis is the story of struggle. It is the story of civic engagement whether you want to be involved or not. This is the one crisis that eventually will affect us all, rich and poor. This topic leads us down a familiar path, one of being aware. In order to adequately respond to the challenges of climate change you must be aware. Aware of what greedy corporations are doing and the complicit politicians that allow them to get away with it. Aware of how our collective and individual actions exacerbate the problem. Aware of who has real solutions and who's just talking. Climate Change is man-made therefore it is up to us to come together to solve it. We say the names of our fallen this week, Sterling Higgins and Corey Jones, and highlight two organizations doing amazing work for voting and civic engagement, The Florida Restoration Coalition and The Conversation Truck. Have you ever noticed how our media shapes narratives? Well we have. In this episode we discuss the impact propaganda and the media has on influencing the masses. Take a look through our history, it seems whenever a group of people make an attempt to rise up and demand better treatment from the system, they are met with disdain, scorn, shame, and a story crafted around them that seeks to invalidate not only their grievances but also their humanity. We break down the history of propaganda and protesting in the modern era, and discuss how propaganda impacts protesting. The story usually goes something like the following: Who are you to protest? Shut up. You're not doing it right. I would have been on your side if you didn't do "X" or say "Y". In this episode we do "X" and say the hell out of "Y". Protesting is messy. It's supposed to be. It's like building a plane as you're taking off down the runway. We correct our mistakes and keep moving. The one thing we don't do is stop. Not for anything or anyone. The propaganda surrounding movements for justice, equity, and equality are not going to be in our favor. Those opposed may say some really terrible things about us but we're fighting for a better world for all, which means changing the one those opposed have become accustomed to. We also say the names of our fallen this week, Atatiana Jefferson and Robert Ford and highlight Mr. Checkpoint, an activist in LA reminding you to "Always Film The Police", and Knock LA, a Los Angeles based organization informing the public on the details of who and what to vote for and why. If you ever wondered what that would feel like/look like, you're in it RIGHT NOW. Our country is on the precipice of going in one of two completely diametrically opposed directions. Either we go towards America being what it can be and keep the promise or we descend into a realm of division of which we may not recover. One of the major keys to doing something about the direction we go in is your ability to engage your sphere of influence however big or small that may be and encourage and demand people educate themselves on the issues and VOTE. In this episode we cover the current fights to keep voting a sound and credible institution against the attacks of the Trump administration and his cronies . We talk about voter suppression tactics, voter intimidation, and lies and misinformation that are the hallmarks of the times we're living in. We have possibly some of the worst choices this time around and we have to be smart about how we move. Our position here at Unlearn And Relearn HQ is that Trump and his band of crazy criminals must go. Although, we're under no illusions or delusions about the cast of characters that are posed to replace them. So in this time, we must reaffirm our dislike for him and our mistrust of the Biden team and hold them both equally accountable for past statements and future actions. In this episode we walk that fine line of denouncing one side while giving the other side the hardest side-eye imaginable. We talk about the ACLU and how they're actively fighting back against Trump and winning. Why would Trump call troops losers and suckers? Episode: 3 - FUNDING THE POLICE IS NOT DEFUNDING THE POLICE

Throwing good money after bad never works. When you're up your nose in sh*t, the last thing you should do is open your mouth. Telling people that the way to better policing is to give them more money, more responsibility, more power, and that if we just give them "More Training" that will solve our problems is bass-akwards and ass backwards. In this weeks episode's MAIN TOPIC, we break down what the hell federal agents are doing in Portland and other cities and why they must leave. We also take a look at police gangs and why I had to type the phrase 'police gangs' and you're not actively loosing your sh*t that modern policing has been infected with Neo-Nazi and racists gangs. Our show follows a NEW FORMAT now: News Highlights of the week: What's going on? Thanks Marvin Gaye Main Topic: Our Main topic Say Their Names: Where we update news of active open cases of police killings of unarmed people. Activist Highlight: We talk about cool people doing great work in the community around justice and equality. Call To Actions: Where we update on Petitions to sign and causes to donate either time or money to, if you can. Again and as always, Thanks so much for hanging with us and we Unlearn The BS and Relearn the good stuff. ► Music Credit: 'Low Frequency Music' Track Name: 'Good Day' Music By: Low Frequency Music @ https://soundcloud.com/user-551516820 Official "Low Frequency Music" YouTube --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wilson-megan/message

In previous Episode 2's you might have expected the Clones to attack but in this “episode 2” we discuss another similar yet oppressive force, The Police, and why they need to be de-funded. More specifically, why we need to re-think the entire idea of American policing and how it's OK to imagine a better system in which resources can be shared to make a more equitable society. We use the people's budget LA as our jumping off point and we break it all the way down. Enjoy. There are many (first) episodes of podcasts but this one is mine. Rather ours. Wilson and Megan are here to discuss the topics you really want to talk about. Since the tragic death of George Floyd, our media space has exploded with corporations and IG "friends" falling over themselves to show how "down" with the cause of Black Lives Matter they really are. But where is the line between acts of goodwill and anti-racism and performative or fake? We tackle this huge topic and more in this week's episode. AGAIN, thanks so much for hanging with us as we unlearn the BS and relearn the good stuff. ► Music Credit: 'Low Frequency Music' Track Name: 'Good Day' Music By: Low Frequency Music @ https://soundcloud.com/user-551516820 Official "Low Frequency Music" YouTube Channel HERE - https://www.youtube.com/LowFrequencyM...
