Dr. Rod Berger sits down with Sam Daley-Harris to peel back the advocacy efforts of a man who has spent a lifetime propelling the power of voice in the pursuit of a healthy and equitable democracy. Sam Daley-Harris founded the anti-poverty lobby RESULTS in 1980, co-founded the Microcredit Summit Campaign in 1995, and founded Civic Courage in 2012. The paperback edition of his book Reclaiming Our Democracy: Every Citizen's Guide to Transformational Advocacy was named an editor's pick by Publisher's Weekly BookLife and will be released January 14th, 2025. Kirkus Reviews wrote: "Overall, [the author's] analysis of effective action is as persuasive as it is accessible, and his call to democratic participation is inspiring. A handbook for aspiring activists that readers will find to be both inspiring and practical." Daley-Harris has been interviewed on NPR's Here and Now and on PBS's Laura Flanders and Friends. After the 2024 election, Tom Nichols wrote in The Atlantic, “….Americans must stay engaged and make their voices heard at every turn….” Liz Cheney tweeted, “….Citizens across this country…must now be the guardrails of democracy.” But most Americans still wonder how, and even if, they can make a difference between elections. What are the options? 1) Protesting? Vital, but usually not the long game, 2) Signing email form letters, which only 3% of Congressional staff say is highly effective. Just gestures, 3) Taking a 2-year nap until the next election? Sadly, the preferred route for many. But few know about number 4) transformational advocacy, which helps you change an issue and changes you in the process. In Reclaiming Our Democracy: Every Citizen's Guide to Transformational Advocacy Sam Daley-Harris writes about people who met with officials on the other side of their issue, stories like these: 1) Ellie Sparks who went from experiencing what she called “climate trauma” to meeting her members of Congress and calling the experience “sacred and profound”, and 2) Lisa Jordan who, after meeting with Congressional offices in Washington, DC, said “….This work is the best medicine for when you're feeling hopeless or have sleepless nights. It's the best way to avoid despair….” Welcome, Sam Daley-Harris.

Last Saturday, an estimated 25,000 people travelled from across the island of Ireland to gather in Dublin and march through the streets of the capital calling for the protection of the Irish language.Participants in Cearta, the first major Irish language demonstration in over a decade, demanded action from Government on housing, education and funding for Gaeltacht communities and Irish speakers.Their calls come at a time when the Irish language is clearly enjoying a bit of a moment. Three years ago, the Irish-language film An Cailín Ciúin experience global success and acclaim after it was shortlisted for an Oscar. And the worldwide popularity of Northern Irish rap group Kneecap, has brought the language to the masses in a way never seen before. But, despite this cultural momentum and growing appreciation of the national language, are policymakers doing enough to ensure its survival?Irish Times Irish language editor Éanna Ó Caollaí discusses the historic turnout at last weekend's CEARTA protest and whether an Gaeilge's pop culture moment could translate into how we fund, support and perceive the national language.Presented by Sorcha Pollak. Bella discusses the recent amendments from the Melbourne City Council, urging the Victorian and Federal governments to look into new frameworks to limit and restrict "disruptive" mass protests in the city as a result of the ongoing pro-Palestinian protests over the past 2 years. Looking at the discrepancies about councillors' views on the supposed disruption to businesses due to the protests. Additionally, the long and significant history of environmental social justice protests in Melbourne, and Australia as a whole, is explored in relation to why the right to protest here in Australia is so important and the things protesting and demonstrations have achieved. Finally, we highlight two Australian-based, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musicians and bands who explore environmental social justice and their connection to the land through this. The first track is titled Nullarbor Dreaming by Dave Norman and the second is Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology) by Small Island Big Song. Below are a few links mentioned in the show!Submit your say, or opposition, on the Melbourne City's Council amendment to look into restricting disruptive protests in the Melbourne CBD.More information on the history of protest here in Australia & Melbourne: #1, #2Dr Olivia Ball & The Greens Party joint Instagram post.
A group of Christian leaders who have chained themselves to Nicola Willis' Johnsonville electorate office are vowing to stay there overnight. They want an urgent timeline from the Government for implementing sanctions against Israel over the war in Gaza. Reverend Mel McKenzie says they're fasting in solidarity with the people of Palestine. "We're just so focused on the suffering that's happening in Gaza and we're doing what Anglican and Catholic priests do - which is to pray and fast." Nicola Willis says she supports the right to peaceful protest - but adds their presence is blocking the public's access to her office and its staff members who would otherwise be able to provide help to the community. Five clergy were trespassed from Simeon Brown's Pakuranga electorate office earlier today. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The liberal media loves to call MAGA supporters conspiracy theorists, but this past weekend they went ham on the fake news that President Trump was dead just because he finally took a weekend off since starting his second term. Chicago Dems preach they are bracing for a federal invasion, when in reality it's incoming law and order which most residents welcome. While Trump keeps cleaning up crime in America, the liberal left either keeps preaching resistance by any means possible or they break out in very bad songs. We also have immigration news, local news, and Rosie O'Donnell actually apologizes.

Employees from the Department of Veterans Affairs are rallying across the country today in protest of the Trump administration's changes to the VA. The agency workers, who are represented by a range of federal unions, warn that staffing reductions and erosion of collective bargaining at the VA will hurt the agency's ability to support veterans. The rallies come after the VA canceled virtually all of its union contracts last week. VA union members are gathering in more than 10 cities today to sound the alarm and press the Trump administration to reverse course.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
