As gun violence has risen across the US, so too has art dedicated to ending gun violence. In this space are art-activists, who combine the creative power of artistic expression (be it dance, music, theater, painting, etc.) with the strategic planning of activism that is necessary to spark, and then shepherd, social change. Today, hosts Kelly and JJ are joined by two art-activists that detail just how important that intersection of art and activism is: Farooq Al- Said and Jason Sole. Farooq is the Director of Operations and an emcee at 1HOOD; Jason is an abolitionist and the co-founder of the Humanize My Hoodie Movement. And more than that, both men are tireless advocates nationally and in their communities for racial justice, the rights of marginalized communities, and to end violence. Together, all four of us discuss everything from performative allyship to code switching, to police violence being gun violence to restorative justice, to the role of art in revolutionary spaces and the risk of white supremacy. We're coming to the end of 2020. To say this year has been challenging on so many levels is a major understatement. This year has been like moving from one slow moving train crash to another while passing shit show after shit show on the way. In this episode we review the stories and people that meant the most to us over the past year. We left some stories out. We left some people out. Some of the biggest stories of this year would have been the only thing we talked about in years past but they barely registered in a year like this one. From the Coronavirus to the death of George Floyd, the massive protests that happened this past summer, the economic crash, The President and all of his nonsense, It seems like we were hit with one crazy event after the other. So in this episode we try and put this crazy ass year into some sort of perspective while pointing our attention towards the future. We talk about all the good that came out of this year and hope for what we can accomplish going forward. The events of this year motivated us to make this podcast and do this work. And We are so grateful for all of you that tune in and give us your attention and support. We also say the names of our fallen this week, Laquan McDonald and Antwon Rose jr. And we highlight 2 Activists, Author and columnist Jimbo Times and Marine Biologist and Climate Activist Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson. The end of the year is here. Please be gentle and kind with yourself and others in this time. Take care of yourself. If you choose to, spend your money where it makes the most impact and does the most good. We'll be back on Jan 5th, 2021 with bigger and better content. And as always, thanks so much for hanging with us as we unlearn the BS and relearn the good stuff. 1. On this episode of the podcast, I'm joined by Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist and Getty images staff photographer Michael Santiago to talk about how he went from a kid growing up in the Dominican Republic with hard working parents to moving to the Bronx at age 7 and falling in love with art and literature, to finally finding photography and a passion for telling visual stories of the world that was around him. During our conversation Michael tells me about the string of jobs in his 20s that finally lead him back to school where he ended up pursuing a Masters Degree and becoming a passionate photojournalist, the tragic story of Antwon Rose that he covered for the Pittsburgh Post Gazette and where he finally found his voice as an artist, why he made the move back to New York and started working with Getty Images, and the advice he gives to others trying to tell their own story. On this week’s episode of Truth About War, we sit down and talk to Mitchell Rose, a Marine Corps veteran who fought in Vietnam. Mitchell grew up in the Western Pennsylvania hard scrabble steel town of Braddock. Growing up there wasn’t easy, nor was entering boot camp at Parris Island in the deep south. He encountered racism during his service, but he remembers a few whose views shifted over time, as drill instructors reminded the soldiers that in the Marines, they’re all green. In 2018, Mitchell decided to turn the pain he experienced due to the killing of his teenage cousin, Antwon Rose, into inspiration to fight for social justice in his community. Tune in to hear Mitchell’s stories of his service and listen to why he is a true freedom fighter in Pittsburgh today.
Calls to defund police departments across the country gain traction. Alex Vitale, the author of The End of Policing and a professor of Sociology at Brooklyn College, has been making the media rounds making the case for divesting from policing and reinvesting in our communities. While defunding the police is freaking out failed state extremists on the right, we’ll talk a little about what defunding the police actually means. When you consider the U.S. police budget is bigger than nearly every other nation’s military budget - $115 billion - you begin to see the kind of funding we’ve channeled to police while cutting community investment. And the statues came tumbling down. Statues of Christopher Columbus, John Colston, slave traders, and confederate soldiers were toppled all over the US this week. And, and, and...even NASCAR has outlawed the confederate flag. Go get your shine box because all three NYPD cop unions went on a media blitz this week asking Trump to bring in the troops to stop the peaceful protesting. And they were also advertising that these white cops are willing to be Trump's fascist street fighters in order to suppress the Black Lives Matter movement and protect the Trump regime. Trump announces a return to in-person mega rallies. The first will be held in Tulsa, OK on June 19th. That’s right, Trump’s first rally since the COVID-19 quarantine is being held on Juneteenth - the holiday to commemorate the day the Emancipation Proclamation was read out in Texas to newly freed black Americans. Texas was the last Confederate state to announce the proclamation. This year is the 99th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre in which white mobs burned and looted black-owned businesses on Tulsa’s Black Wall Street. Over 6,000 black Americans were hospitalized and at least 36 people were killed. What do you think the chances are that Trump chose that city on that day so that he could offer a message of racial reconciliation? Chicago police were caught on tape lounging around U.S. Representative Bobby Rush’s district office as the streets outside the office were being looted and damaged. At least 13 officers were caught making popcorn, brewing coffee, taking naps, and lounging with feet up on desks. Oh, did I mention they did not have Rush’s permission to be in Rush’s office? He only found out after he got a notice of a break into his office. The security tape revealed the truth. Bobby Rush was co-founded the Illinois chapter of the Black Panthers in the 60s and had to go into hiding after Chicago police assassinated Fred Hampton. Coincidence, huh? Activists declare an autonomous zone in a six-block area in the Capitol Hill neighborhood in Seattle, declaring it a “no-cop zone.” Trump looks to be gearing up to militarize the repression, calling the activists “domestic terrorists.” Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan tells Trump to “go back to your bunker,” even as she faces calls by activists for her resignation. Remember Janus? You know, that Supreme Court decision that took aim at gutting public-sector union? Yeah, well, the guy who brought the suit, Mark Janus, now works for the right-wing Liberty Justice Center, and he’s got a new case moving through the courts. This time, Janus wants public-sector unions to make the Court’s 2018 Janus decision retroactive, forcing public-sector unions to refund millions of dollars of fair-share fees collected before the 2018 decision. The Court will decide next week if it will hear the case. And today is the 4th anniversary of the mass shooting at the Pulse Night Club in Orlando. 49 people were killed and 53 were wounded. The shooting stands as the deadliest attack against the LGBT community in U.S. history. And yet another sober memorial. Medgar Evers was assassinated on this day in 1963 by a member of the Ku Klux Klan. While large Black Lives Matter protests in Pennsylvania’s large cities made national news, this past week saw more than 100 protests in at least 61 of the state’s 67 counties. The Pennsylvania House Legislative Black Caucus pulled a coup at the start of the session on Monday. They took over the House Speaker’s rostrum out of protest and shared their feelings on the House Republicans’ inaction on police reform since Antwon Rose was murdered by an East Pittsburgh cop. Turzai promised the Black Caucus a special session to combat police violence, but... Speaker Turzai announced he was resigning on Wednesday and while failing to follow through on his promise of a special session. However, the House Judiciary Committee will meet next week to potentially vote some of these bills out of committee. PA State System of Higher Education’s Board of Governors announced plans to return to “some form of” face-to-face instruction in the fall. Chancellor Daniel Greenstein says that plans will be finalized in the coming weeks. Who’s making those plans? Based on what criteria? It would be good to know, right? The Senate Armed Services Committee passed a bill on Wednesday that established a Space Force National Guard. And, remember when we told you that the Space Force was seeking over 7,000 volunteers to transfer from their Air Force commission to the Space Force? Well, this week Space Force officials announced that they far exceeded expectations, More than 8,500 airmen and women volunteered to join the Space Force. Gen. John “Jay” Raymond, chief of space operations of the U.S. Space Force said the new volunteers “made the bold decision to volunteer to join the U.S. Space Force and defend the ultimate high ground.” Speaking of the Space Force, did you check out Netflix’s Space Force? We’ll have a little breakdown. Mahoney just finished Station Eleven, and it was freaking awesome. He’s on to rereading Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower, from her Earthseed series. Free Will Brewing joins the wave of voices speaking on in support of the protests following the police murder of George “Perry” Floyd. They said, “In the past, we have always kept our message about beer and stayed out of social and political issues. We told ourselves we should only be judged by our actions. No more being quiet.” We’ll have their full statement for you. And the people have spoken and Free Will has responded - Safeword is back in stock, ready for pick up or shipping to your door. Safeword is an Imperial IPA w/ Mangoes & Habaneros coming in at a big 10.2% ABV. It’s one of my favorites. Cecile Richards, Alicia Garza, and Ai-jen Poo join forces to launch a new PAC called Supermajority. Supermajority will partner with different groups to educate and train two million women in activism and political participation across the country. According to a press release sent to ELLE.com, Supermajority not only aims to ensure a women's agenda is represented at the ballot box in 2020, but also to drive change around issues like the wage gap, childcare costs, maternal mortality rates, family leave, and family separation at the border. Old School Labor makes a strong, white showing for Biden in Pittsburgh this week. Michael Bennet is running for president. Googling “who is Michael Bennet” now. Eric Levitz of New York Mag nails it in his piece, “Why I — a Bland White Guy You’ve Never Heard Of — Am Running for President.” Knock Down the House is now out on Netflix. Navy sailors aboard the USS. Harry Truman in Norfolk, VA encouraged to greet Vice President Mike Pence by “clapping like we’re at a strip club.” Harrisburg may have actually hit Peak Stupid this week. On Tuesday, Daryl Metcalfe invited roughly 150 anti-vaxxers and their disease-carrying, unvaccinated, children to the Pennsylvania Capitol and gave their conspiracy theories a platform by hosting a press conference and introducing legislation to protect anti-vaxxers. If that wasn’t enough, on Wednesday, the Senate Republican Policy Committee tried to one-up Metcalfe by hosting another sham climate change hearing that had Koch Brother funded geographers, meteorologists, and geologists. One big takeaway from the hearing is that Senator Scott Martin added “novice Hurricane tracker” to his resume. Summer Lee along with PA House and Senate Dems held a police accountability rally in the wake of the Antwon Rose verdict. Speakers included local community leaders and Antwon’s mother, Michelle Kenney. Looking forward to next week, March on Harrisburg will be arriving on Monday fighting for gift bans. Yo, this is JB. Urban Laughter is a whole ass fool. You will see why when you listen. Aside from that, we tackle a number of topics like how I believe that Beyonce will be dropping a new album soon. I feel it in my spirit. We also discuss Daniel Caesar and how between the great divide that happens to be his teeth, he's trying to find ways to blame racial issues on the fact that black people are being mean to white people. We discuss other hot topics, but it is the moment that Urban Laughter discusses the Antwon Rose verdict that you realize that we might talk a big game about a lot of things, but we have not, do not, and never will stay silent while black people continue to be victims of unjust situations. We stand together and we hope you will to after listening to this episode of The Rude Urban Truth.Urban Laughter also lost some of her black card points as she was unsuccessful in reciting the well-known negro spiritual, Knuck If You Buck.

Yep, you heard that right. I’m going to call it what it is. MURDER. Like the bloody scenes you see in a Quentin Tarantino movie, or the latest war report on CNN. A jury acquitted Rosfeld on all charges Friday. As cited by NewsOne.com :90 Tired of Talking About This I am sick and tired of having a bi-weekly conversation about another young black male (endangered species) being gunned down by the police. Time out for talk and marches. Now it's time for congress to take some action on some real criminal justice reform. No more whimsical talking points from the left or the right. This led me into a talk about the justice system and the disparity within when it comes to poor and people of color. He Was Killed Nine Out of Ten Times Today's topics include: That's what a state trooper said about the training he had to go through...so with cases involving unfortunate tragedies - like Antwon Rose - it makes one wonder how much training cop Michael Rosfeld had before that fateful day; next, some sports. John discusses topics such as Kaepernick, as well as a college basketball coach who is getting some heat after 'yelling at a player'; and finally, Ahnaf Kalam (author at The College Fix) joins the show to talk about how a course at CU Denver, removed all white men from the curriculum.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this episode of The Critical Hour with Dr. Wilmer Leon, we'll talk with Attorney Fred Rabner representing the family of Antwon Rose. Rose, 17, was shot while running from a car that was pulled over by Rosefeld after a reported drive-by shooting in another area. The lawsuit alleges wrongful death and other counts against the borough itself, Rosefeld, Mayor Louis Payne and police Chief Lori Fruncek. Also, it's Friday and time for our panel discussion. First up it's all about defense spending. Is this LUNACY? The Senate cleared and sent to President Trump a $717 billion defense policy bill aimed at building up the military and blunting Chinese foreign investment and telecommunications technology. This $717 billion includes $616.9 billion for the base Pentagon budget and $21.9 billion for nuclear weapons programs under the Energy Department. Another extra $69 billion would be authorized to fund U.S. war efforts under the Overseas Contingency Operations account. What message does this send around the world and what does this say about our domestic politics?Budgets are numeric representations of priorities. So with infrastructure crumbling, homelessness, public schools underfunded, etc., this country decides to spend $717B on strengthing its war footing...what say you? We'll also talk about Thursday's major statement from Pope Francis. The world was at attention when the pope declared that the death penalty is wrong in all cases. This is a clear change in church teaching that is likely to challenge faithful Catholic politicians, judges and officials in the United States and other countries who have argued that their church was not entirely opposed to capital punishment. Over 2800 people sit on death row in the United States. Fourteen executions are scheduled for the remainder of 2018. What does this do to the politics, especially for Catholics and Christians? In our last segment, our guests will assess the fight over Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the SCOTUS and examine the recent unemployment numbers. The devil is in the details and we're digging until we get to them. You don't want to miss this!GUESTS: Attorney Fred Rabner, Esq. - Attorney in Antwon Rose, II case.Earl Ofari Hutchinson - Political analyst; author of Why Black Lives Do Matter; the host of the weekly Hutchinson Report on KPFK 90.7 FM Los Angeles and the Pacifica Network.Caleb Maupin - Journalist and political analyst who focuses his coverage on US foreign policy and the global system of monopoly capitalism and imperialism. Internment camps? Prison camps? ProPublica’s audio of kids crying in cages after being separated from families finally gets people’s attention. Right before the dam broke, Trump was receiving the highest approval ratings of his presidency, according to last weekend’s Gallup poll. Hungary - homeland to Sebastian Gorka and his Fascist loving dad - passes “Stop Soros” laws and bans aid to undocumented immigrants.
