This week's guest is the Emmy award-winning American journalist Kate Fagan. Kate started out playing college basketball before making the move into sports journalism. She worked for the American cable channel ESPN (for brits, that's THE sports channel in the US) and wrote the number 1 NYT bestseller, What Made Maddy Run.  Then, just before she turned 40 and at the top of her professional game, Kate took a hard left. She stepped away from the career that made her famous, moved to Charleston and married her wife Kathryn Budig. Now she's written a novel The Three Lives of Cate Kay that pushes all the buttons. A dissection of success and ambition, and the true cost of living a lie, it was Reese Witherspoon's first bookclub pick of the year.  While Kate was on the Edinburgh leg of her book tour, she came to hang out in my flat and ply Sausage the cat with Dreamies (no cash has changed hands but he's always open to a conversation!)  While she was here we discussed the moment she was bitten by the ambition bug (and how she's still struggling to shake it off), the lack of female sporting role models when she was a young athlete, coming out at 30 and The stories we tell ourself about what it means to be a successful human. We also chatted age dysmorphia, crossing the 40 threshold and the conversation she wishes she'd had with her mum. She also introduced me to the concept of TODs. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including The Three Lives of Cate Kay by Kate Fagan and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls at Pineapple Production. Many of us feel the weight of others' expectations to look, speak, or feel a certain way. But perhaps if we were able to be more fully ourselves, as yoga teachers we could then create spaces that welcome our students to do the same. Today's episode is a warm and heartfelt conversation between Tiffany and long-time friend, Kathryn Budig. Kathryn is a shining example of following her own compass in work and in life. Building on almost two decades as an internationally recognized yoga teacher, author, and podcaster, Kathryn has created a unique online community that celebrates shared passions for yoga and meditation, inclusion and representation, rituals, recipes, and diving deep into a great book. Tiffany and Kathryn explore how things can change through the course of a long friendship—like our definition of success, the nature of our physical practice, and our ever-changing relationship with our bodies. The conversation dives into the nuance behind hashtags like “body positivity” and “self love”, celebrates the value of wisdom over short-term relevance, and weighs the pros and cons of social media given its power as a tool to reach marginalized communities. Reflecting on Pride month, Kathryn shares her thoughts on queer representation in yoga and reminds us of the power of stepping outside our comfort zone into curiosity. Show Notes: What it means to truly create community in the yoga world [03:11] Releasing external metrics to craft a personal definition of success [06:09] Reinvention in the face of others' expectations [11:25] Celebrating wisdom versus the pressure to “stay relevant” [14:01] Pros and cons of the Covid era for yoga teachers [18:25] The evolution of Kathryn's yoga practice [21:44] Complex conversations around body positivity in yoga [24:04] The illusion of constant “self love” [33:38] Loving and hating social media [37:14] Queer representation matters [41:20] What Pride Month means to Kathryn [46:20] Being an ally to the LGBTQ+ community [50:01] Links Mentioned: Watch this episode on YouTube Connect with Kathryn Budig: Instagram | Inky Phoenix | Haus of Phoenix | Kathryn Budig You can learn more about this episode, and see the full show notes at www.YogaMedicine.com/podcast-34. Kate and I discuss the state of mental health in sports, her recent book, “All the Colors Came Out” and her relationship to surrender in work and in life. Kate is genius at noticing whats interesting and creating a story worth listening to, I think you'll love what Kate brings to this episode.   In this episode, you will learn:  How the book, “What Made Maddy Run” shaped the conversation around mental health in young women and in sports How athletes struggle to lose perspective and get into flow state.  What Kate's superpower was growing up  How noticing what is most interesting is Kate's superpower as an adult How Kate feels about the state of sports media today  Why the conversion around women's basketball “being more fundamental” is in some ways stiffalying the creative and playful part of the game.  Having swag on the court and off has nothing to do with being fundamental - both can exist.  How Kate has learned to redefine what quitting meant for her at ESPN and also in her Dad's fight with ALS.  How strength and grace exist during times of surrender.  How sports can allow more space for surrender How the Las Vegas Aces are blending team dynamics and individuality for a more cohesive and healthy team Kate's journey with listening to her body  About Kate: Kate Fagan is an Emmy-award winning journalist and the No. 1 New York Times bestselling author of WHAT MADE MADDY RUN, which was a semi-finalist for the PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sportswriting. How long must we wait for the form to emerge? Sometimes right up to the last minute! In this episode we speak with Kate Fagan, Emmy-award winning journalist and No. 1 New York Times bestselling author. We talk about her new book, ALL THE COLORS CAME OUT, a memoir about her relationship with her father and his death from ALS. Kate shares with us the differences between writing memoir and reporting the story of someone else, the importance of communicating with the people you love who will be in the memoir and how she wrote the real story vs. the story she wish it had been. And of course, we speak of emerging form, and how for this book, it continued to emerge until the last hour. Kate Fagan is an Emmy-award winning journalist and the No. 1 New York Times bestselling author of WHAT MADE MADDY RUN, which was a semi-finalist for the PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sportswriting. This episode is special. Not that kind of special but the other kind of special. Yeah, that one. We have more to give our listeners and we want to thank you so much for hanging with us so we have another extra episode for you, because you earned it. In this extra special Friday episode, we cover the topic of Racism in the Wellness Space. Racism has pervaded every aspect of human existence in our current world. You can't turn over a rock without seeing how another industry has been negatively affected by the worst parts or prejudice and discrimination. From fitness to fashion, art and sports, racism is in everything. What made the people of the wellness industry, my industry, think it would be any different? Using the story of Nicole Cardoza, Kathryn Budig, and the Yoga Journal controversy as our jumping off point, we dive deep and explore how implicit bias, well-meaning language, and overt discrimination finds it way underneath the masks of smiles, inclusion, diversity, and Namaste. Again and as always, thanks so much for hanging with us as we unlearn the BS and relearn the good stuff. Something I've been noticing on the podcast lately is I'm talking less with guests about what they do and more about how they're doing and what they're up to in life overall. Today's conversation felt like one of those. My guest, Kathryn Budig is an internationally celebrated yoga teacher and author known for her accessibility, humor, and ability to empower her students through her message, "aim true." Her big truth was about finding happiness within the pursuit of success. From there we discussed a variety of ways the pursuit of success makes us unhappy. From pursuing things because we think we "should" to the ways we use social media, seek validation and other forms of self-compromise. We talked about sustaining ourselves vs pushing or hustling and we also explored feeling comfortable in our skin as our bodies change and we go through difference phases, her experience of coming out in a relationship with a woman after her divorce from her husband. To say this one is packed and juicy is an understatement. Enjoy! About Kathryn Budig: Kathryn Budig is an internationally celebrated yoga teacher and author known for her accessibility, humor, and ability to empower her students through her message, “aim true.” The Kansas native graduated from the University of Virginia with a double degree in English and Drama before moving to Los Angeles, where she trained at Yogaworks under the tutelage of her mentors, Maty Ezraty and Chuck Miller. With over a decade of experience in her field, Budig served as the yoga editor to Women’s Health magazine for five years, contributed recipes and sat on the Yahoo Health Advisory Board, and regularly contributes to Yoga Journal, The New Potato, and MindBodyGreen. She was an athlete in Under Armour’s “I WILL WHAT I WANT” campaign, the co-host of the Free Cookies podcast, teaches regular online classes on Yogaglo.com, and is the founder of her animal project, Poses for Paws. She is the creator of the Aim True Yoga DVD produced by Gaiam, author of The Women's Health Big Book of Yoga and Aim True. welcome to the 27th episode of Call to Adventure, where we sit down with Kathryn Budig - internationally celebrated yoga teacher and author known for her accessibility, humor, and ability to empower her students through her message, "aim true.”. With over a decade of experience in her field, Budig served as the yoga editor to Women's Health magazine for five years, on the Yahoo Health Advisory Board, regularly contributes to Yoga Journal, The New Potato, and MindBodyGreen. She was an athlete in Under Armour's "I WILL WHAT I WANT" campaign, the co-host of espnW's podcast, Free Cookies with her fiancé Kate Fagan, and is the founder of her animal project, Poses for Paws. She is also the creator of the Aim True Yoga DVD produced by Gaiam, author of The Women's Health Big Book of Yoga and Aim True. often celebrity can bring scrutiny and controversy, especially in the unusual world of modern postural yoga - and Kathryn is no stranger to this reality - she has been the unintended catalyst for debate in the yoga community about the sexualized and commodified female form, and more recently about body image. and she seems perfectly suited for that role - with the strength and confidence to step into the lion’s den and emerge better for it - sparking much needed conversations about difficult subjects. we cover a wide range of topics: can success and fame co-exist? how to use jealously and competition as inspiration… labels, sexual identity and finding your human; meatsuits, body image and the yoga industrial complex; and stepping out of the box… so, without further adieu here’s our conversation with Kathryn Budig… hope you enjoy…

Kathryn Budig is arguably one of the world's most famous yoga teachers. With an Instagram following of 219,000 (and counting), a past in Hollywood, background in acting, and a conventional "yoga bod," she was driven to disprove the stereotype that often comes with being young, blonde and beautiful. She set out to show the world that her teachings were substantial, spiritual, and meaningful. And she did. In this episode, mindbodygreen's CEO Jason Wachob touches on all the key milestones in Budig's life—the good, the bad, and the ugly. Budig, who is as relatable and authentic as they come even with all her acclaim, did her initial yoga teacher training in LA with Maty Ezraty and Chuck Miller, owners of Yoga Works, and subsequently studied with visionaries such as Seane Corn, who are credited with tastefully shaping yoga practice into the modern Western version we know and love today. After committing to teach yoga full time and moving on from her dream of acting, Budig was ready to leave LA and travel through central Florida for a brief interlude before plopping down in Charleston, South Carolina where she married her now ex-husband. Going through her marriage and divorce in the very public venue of social media left her struggling with anxiety and vertigo, but also fueled a newfound personal and spiritual practice that inspired her book, Aim True. Budig has since started her own wellness and sports podcast with her girlfriend Kate Fagan called Free Cookies, has become a budding public speaker, and has started working on book No. 3 as well as a comedy-based show. Welcome to episode 87. Just had my Mothers’ Day celebration!   It’s May in New York City! I was teaching at a retreat from Friday and Saturday and came back early morning to be with family. Cooked pancakes with the kids and had breakfast, played video games together. Went out to get my acupuncture – one of my favorite and absolutely necessary healthcare habits. I go at least once a week, pay $30. Then woke up from my needle nap to have tea with a dear girlfriend. We had some nice iced beverage. I bought healthy snacks and stuffed them in my bag and then went to  the movie theatre to meet my kids.  I usually take my organic popcorn. If the theatre had healthy snacks, I’d buy them.  We went and saw The Avengers, Captain America, Captain Marvel. I’m a big Marvel comics fan.  It was fun! I had some alone time, some friend time, and some kid time.   You can listen to the episode and read the full show notes at www.alexandrajamieson.com/87

Join Anna K. as she interviews Larry Thraen... Yoga discovered me when I was training for marathons. In order to keep my body well despite an intense weekly running regimen, I intuitively combined stretching with my breath. Later, I attended my first yoga class in NYC and I discovered that I had been doing yoga all along.  Known in Nicaragua as Yoga Larry, I'm a Vinyasa style powerful flow instructor who has spent the majority of my teaching career in Nicaragua. Since 1998 I studied extensively in Los Angeles under Vinnie Marino, Bryan Kest, Annie Carpenter, Steve Ilg, Mark Blanchard and Kathryn Budig. I teach from life experience and incorporate traditional wisdom of the Tibetan Diamond Sutras, A Course in Miracles, and transpersonal psychology. I lead several international yoga teacher trainings, retreats and workshop and continue to further myself through continued wellness education. When not running, mountain biking; surfing; or traveling, I may be found 'flying' acro partners throughout Houston and searching for 'hole in the wall' eats. See more here!
