Troy Davis was born with a brittle bone disease and would be introduced to wheelchair sports in 1989. He would earn numerous national records in the sprints, would compete at the World Championships in 1994, and would be a member of Team USA for the 2000 Paralympic Games in Australia. Troy was recruited to be part of the University of Arizona first Wheelchair Athletics Team. He went on to coach the Arizona Heat and has started a track team in Portland. In addition he works at Nike and was inducted into the Adaptive Sports Hall of Fame in 2024.

Dallas Bryant ran for three touchdowns and grabbed a pass for another score as No. 4-ranked Thomasville ripped Dallas County 47-0 Friday night in Plantersville to win the 3A Region 3 crown. Bryant scored on runs of 45, 48 and 14 yards for the Tigers (8- 0, 6-0) and caught a 28- yard scoring pass from Shern Collins. In the early morning hours of August 19th, 1989, Mark MacPhail was responding to a disturbance in the parking lot of a restaurant where he was working as a security guard.He came across altercation involving three men. One man had just pistol whipped another with a hand gun. As Mark approached to try and stop the assailant turned and fired his gun, hitting Mark multiple times. Mark dropped to the ground and two men fled from the scene. The caller who reported the crime to 911 said that they saw multiple people running from the scene but were unable to identify them. If the death penalty is about providing vengeance and/or closure to crime victims and their families, are those needs being served by the existing California death penalty system? Many people would answer no, based on the fact that the State hasn't killed anyone sentenced to death in 10 years. As each case drags on and on, costing tax payers millions and millions of dollars, the pervasive question is, "Can it be fixed? If so, how?" I wanted to explore these ideas, so I spoke with Gwen Freeman. She's an attorney who has Self portrait by Gwen Freeman represented several death row inmates filing habeas corpus proceedings. Though our approach is different, our conclusion is the same. The California death row system must be eliminated. Voters will have an opportunity to decide this issue in November by voting on a pair of propositions. Yes On 62 will end the death penalty and replace it with life in prison without parole.
