Pastor Josh Rhone preaches on March 19, 2023, at Zion Church, a United Methodist congregation, in York, Pennsylvania. This weekend we look at Nehemiah 9.1-37. Having listened as the Law of the book of Moses was read and having participated in Sukkot, the people of Judah/the inhabitants of Jerusalem enter into a time of remembrance and confession. They recount the history of the relationship between Yahweh and God's chosen people, as well as the many missteps and failures of Judah to honor their covenantal responsibilities. Despite their many failures, God remains "gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in love." Today, we discuss the importance of remembering our past (good or bad), as well as the opportunity that we have to break the cycle with God's help –– embracing, leaning into, and living a new and different life as we follow Christ. Pastor Josh Rhone preaches on March 12, 2023, at Zion Church, a United Methodist congregation, in York, Pennsylvania. This weekend we look at Nehemiah 8. This week we look at two important things that take place in the life of the community which inhabited Jerusalem and had worked diligently to rebuild the walls. First, they assembled for the reading of the book of the Law of Moses; and, second, they observed the "Festival of Booths." Each was celebratory in nature. Yet, each was unique and different. What might we learn from these distinct, unique times of worship? How might our understanding of the praise and worship of God be enriched/deepened? Join us for this week's conversation. Nehemiah and team have successfully rebuilt the walls. Yet, not everyone is pleased. In fact, some in the community are downright angry. Pastor Josh Rhone preaches on February 12, 2023, at Zion Church, a United Methodist congregation, in York, Pennsylvania. This weekend we look at Nehemiah 5.14-19. The walls and gates of Jerusalem lie in ruin. Nehemiah is cupbearer to King Artaxerxes I, of Persia. Although he was born in captivity and despite having never been to Jerusalem, Nehemiah's heart breaks over the brokenness that has been reported. God stirs his heart. Nehemiah has the courage to care. He not only weeps over the situation and cries out to God, but he experiences God's leading. So he, with vulnerability, shares his concern with the king; requests safe passage and supplies; and has the courage to leave all behind to go. In today's Scripture, Nehemiah journeys to Jerusalem and, in so doing, faces opposition. Yet, he doesn't allow the opposition to get the better of him and he doesn't allow the opposition to stop him in his tracks. Today, we look at how a community, of diverse gifts and skills, joins with Nehemiah in the work of rebuilding the walls. Goldsmiths and perfume-makers; priests and homeowners and daughters –– all join in this work. When God is doing a new thing, it includes everyone! As chapter 4 begins, opposition mounts. Sanballat & Tobiah are determined to oppose the work that is taking place –– the new thing that God is doing. In the first part of chapter 5, Nehemiah addresses the "elephant in the room." In the latter half, he provides an example of an alternative way of life –– a life characterized by generosity rather than scarcity; hope rather than fear. Pastor Josh Rhone speaks on October 2, 2022, at Zion Church, a United Methodist congregation, in York, Pennsylvania. This weekend Pastor Josh preaches from Luke 17.5-10, a passage in which Jesus' disciples come to him and ask that he "increase [their] faith." It was a request that made sense. A request rooted, quite possibly, in their circumstances. Quite possibly, we, too, have reason to request increased faith. It could be health worries, concerns stemming from the news, economic frustrations –– whatever it is, each of us have a reason (or two or three) as to why we want and/or need our faith to increase. Yet, today, Jesus reminds us that only a small amount of faith is needed. A little bit of faith will do. This is comforting to those who are worn out. This is good news to those who are exasperated. Johnny Cash. Trent Reznor. The Downward Spiral and "Hurt." Join us as we ask, "What have I become?" Pastor Josh Rhone speaks on September 25, 2022, at Zion Church, a United Methodist congregation, in York, Pennsylvania. This weekend Pastor Josh preaches from Luke 16.19-31, one of Jesus' most interesting and confounding parables. In the parable Jesus talks about two men, whose lives and experience in the afterlife is very different. One man, the Rich Man, seems to have everything –– every opportunity, every luxury, everything anyone could ever want or dream of. The other man, Lazarus (a man whose name means 'God has helped') has nothing in this life. He has sores that he can't take care of. He eats scraps from the Rich Man's table. Yet, there is a great reversal as the parable continues. Join us as we talk about life, our ambitions and dreams, and eternity. Pastor Josh Rhone speaks on August 28, 2022, at Zion Church, a United Methodist congregation, in York, Pennsylvania. This weekend Pastor Josh preaches from Luke 14.1, 7-14, focusing in on the idea that God is doing a new thing. That God's Kingdom is different. Humility is prized over pride. Those who humble themselves will be exalted. Hospitality isn't extended on the basis of who can reciprocate, give back, offer payment in return. God's Kingdom upends and turns upside-down the present order of things! Pastor Josh Rhone speaks on August 21, 2022, at Zion Church, a United Methodist congregation, in York, Pennsylvania. This weekend Pastor Josh preaches from Luke 13.10-17, focusing in on the idea that "a little bit of faith makes a profound difference." So often, we focus on big risks; large leaps of faith. However, in today's Scripture, a woman who has been bent over (doubled-over) for eighteen years, exercises a small amount of faith and stands up straight. Today, we ask, "where might Jesus being calling you and I to stand up straight, with His help?" Rev. Joshua Rhone preaches at Zion Church, from Luke 10.38-42, on July 17, 2022, at Zion Church, a United Methodist congregation, in York, Pennsylvania. In this morning's Scripture, we look at Jesus' visit to the home of Martha. Mary sits and listens to Jesus, while her sister Martha is busy. In seeing things transpire Jesus says, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things, but few things are need –– indeed, only one (Luke 10.41-42, NRSVU)." For many of us life is busy, chaotic even. Faith often seems like just one more thing to add to an already busy schedule. What if things could be simpler? What if it really does come down to one thing? And, what if identifying and understanding one thing could change everything for the better? Join us for this week's sermon podcast.
