On a recent visit to the bell tower at St Mary’s Church in Liss, Shine Radio stepped into a world of rhythm, rope and remarkable community spirit. As the bells rang out overhead, Laura Sheppard spoke to members of the Liss Bellringers - including some of their enthusiastic youth ringers - about what keeps them climbing those tower steps week after week. Of course, there’s the skill and satisfaction of learning to ring: mastering timing, listening closely, working together to create intricate patterns of sound. But what truly shone through was something even more powerful. Camaraderie. Friendship. Generosity of spirit. From experienced ringers supporting beginners, to young people discovering a tradition that stretches back centuries, there’s a deep sense of belonging in the tower. It’s a place where encouragement is freely given, laughter echoes between peals, and everyone pulls together - quite literally - to make something beautiful happen. Set against the atmospheric backdrop of practice night at St Mary’s Church, this feature captures not just the sound of bellringing, but the warmth and welcome of the people behind it. Have a listen and discover why, in Liss, bellringing is about far more than bells.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Soundbites Here are 10 interesting soundbites from the episode: "It wasn't until much later that I started to realize how great of musicians they were too. Right then it was their charisma, their personalities, their humor." — Dan on watching the Ed Sullivan show at age five. "I might have been coerced into picking Ringo because they needed a drummer and not another guitar player. But I fully embraced the Ringo role." — Dan on childhood Beatles roleplay with his brother and cousin. "Every occasion I can think of, particularly in my life, a Beatles song gets played a lot at family outings." — Dan on how the Beatles are woven into his family traditions. "John's vision was to save the world. George's was to save his soul and be close to God. Paul wanted to remain relevant in music his whole life. And Ringo — his vision was, have fun with my buddies." — Dan on how their diverging visions fractured the band. "It sounds absurd to think of the four of them having a strategic planning retreat, but that's what they needed." — Dan on what could have saved the Beatles. "Paul was clinging so hard to try to keep them together. I think that clinging itself had a way of pushing them further apart." — Dan on Paul's role in the breakup. "No one I think is in my tree. He's talking about feeling different and isolated, maybe special." — Dan breaking down why Strawberry Fields Forever is his favorite Beatles song. "The big fight was over who was going to manage the Beatles — Alan Klein or Paul's in-laws. They were all wrong." — Dan on the business conflict that tore them apart. "Each of the four of them had a vote and each of the four of them had veto power of anything they wanted to do." — Dan on how Apple Corps eventually structured their business. "It made me realize life's short. Most people back at the company, they got it handled. They can do it without me." — Dan on how dying on the operating table inspired him to finally write the book. Most church men's ministry doesn't fail because men don't care—it fails because it's built in a way men don't connect. If your men's group feels like a mini-sermon, a weekly therapy circle, or a “men's breakfast once a quarter,” you're not alone. In this episode, Don Ross (founder of Manhood Tribes) breaks down why men “vote with their feet,” why most churches struggle to engage men, and what an action-based men's group can look like that actually produces growth. You'll hear a simple, practical framework for building real brotherhood, strengthening biblical masculinity, and creating a men's tribe that challenges men to lead at home, in their faith, and in their everyday life. We talk about the crisis of masculinity, why the church often defines manhood too narrowly, and how to build a men's ministry that's rooted in purpose, activity, accountability, and freedom in Christ. If you're a pastor, men's ministry leader, or a man who's tired of shallow groups, this is a step-by-step blueprint to build a men's group that sticks. Why most men's groups don't work (and what men actually want) The 3 pillars of a strong men's tribe: Manhood, Camaraderie, Freedom The 5 Marks of Manhood: strength, courage, skill, honor, allegiance How to run monthly manhood challenges that create real results The leadership shift pastors need: empower men instead of controlling it Why in-person brotherhood beats digital (and when virtual can still work) How to start a tribe in your community in about 12 weeks 00:00 Intro00:45 Meet Don Ross + Manhood Tribes02:44 The real problem with men's ministry today05:00 Why men's groups are built wrong (and men don't show up)07:00 “Men vote with their feet” (what that means)11:26 The “pastors don't trust men” issue14:19 The Tribe model: 3 pillars14:54 The 5 Marks of Manhood15:35 Monthly manhood challenges (examples)18:09 Build Your Own Tribe (12-week framework)19:30 In-person vs virtual tribes21:01 Don's book: How to Be a Man25:37 Final takeaway + free quiz #MensMinistry #ChristianMen #BiblicalManhood #Masculinity #ChurchLeadership Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode, I'm sitting down with Jace to talk about what the season actually looks like when you strip away the highlight reel. We get into chasing specific deer that seem to vanish overnight, the mental grind that comes with late-season decisions, and how scouting, fitness, and intention all start to overlap when you've been at this long enough. We talk about the moments that don't make social media—the near misses, the unexpected encounters, and the quiet wins that only mean something if you were there. At its core, this one's about staying present, trusting the process, and remembering why the chase still matters when the outcome isn't guaranteed. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM PODCAST 475 Targeting mature, homebody bucks requires patience, flexibility, and a long view. Scouting—especially for acorns and seasonal shifts—is the foundation of consistent deer encounters. Late-season conditions change deer behavior, demanding adaptation rather than force. Fitness and longevity matter more as the years stack up, both in the woods and in life. Trail cameras help, but understanding movement and timing still wins hunts. Unexpected encounters often become the most meaningful moments of the season. Camaraderie, reflection, and enjoying the process matter more than the final outcome. One Battle After Another, the spirited and controversial Oscar contender from Paul Thomas Anderson, premiered in September. That opening weekend featured a "Behind the Screen" premiere at the storied West Newton cinema. Why "behind"? Because Marisa Pagano and J.B. Sloan of the West Newton Cinema Foundation) invited RTB to oversee a fascinating post-mortem between authors of recent books about "PTA" and about Thomas Pynchon, whose scintillating 1990 novel Vineland inspired the film. If inspired does not seem the right word, the exact relationship between the two was one of many things examined by Ethan Warren (The Cinema of Paul Thomas Anderson: American Apocrypha, Columbia University Press, 2023)and Pete Coviello (Vineland Reread) pored over in some detail in what follows, a very unusual live Recall This Book conversation. Pete situates the inspirational novel as a pivot point ("funniest novel you've ever read") for Thomas Pynchon, a consolidation of the counter-insurgency ("drugs, sacrament of the 60's, Evil of the 80's) state from the post-1960's into the complacency of the Reagan era. Ethan, who defends practically everything PTA movie but Hard Eight (1996; despite John's affection for it) points out the significance of non-white characters, and applauds his "alarming" decision to confront white supremacy in its clarity and also the over-the-topness of the Christmas Adventurer's Club. Pete, who wishes that the film could be as funny as the novel, emphasizes that earlier Pynchon novels were founded on conspiratorial pushback against Manichean structures. By 1990, though, he no longer rejects the solidarity that the left might bring to bear against the fascist power of the Right. God bless the unrepudiated armed insurgents, says Pete. Camaraderie and solidarity define the essence of both book and film. Although Ethan, more skeptical of the politics of the novel, reminds us that they all lose; at the end of the day, he sees the film's overt message as less appealing than its visual energy. Audience questions, topping off the event, delve into the past and the world of Pynchon's commitments, in often surprising ways. The conversation wraps by celebrating a more than cameo by Tisha Sloan, who happens to be West Newton organizer J.B.'s sister! Learn more about your ad choices. (00:01) Teaching Golf Standards and Challenges This chapter features an engaging conversation with Brian Manzella, a renowned golf instructor who is highly ranked in both Golf Magazine's Top 100 Teachers and Golf Digest's Top 50 Teachers lists. We explore the challenges of finding a suitable golf teacher who can adapt to individual learning styles rather than enforcing a one-size-fits-all approach. Brian shares insights into the low standards in the golf teaching industry, contrasting it with other professions that require certifications. He reflects on his career choices and aspirations, and the conversation highlights the importance of having experienced and qualified instructors in golf. Brian's journey and thoughts offer a valuable perspective on the state of golf instruction today. (11:26) Standardizing Golf Instruction This chapter addresses the challenges and opportunities in the world of golf instruction, particularly focusing on biomechanics and communication within the PGA of America. I explore the contrasting methodologies between various biomechanics schools, such as Jacobs 3D and TPI, and question the potential for a unified approach. The conversation also critiques the communication skills in teaching, suggesting that studying successful educators could be more beneficial. I propose two actionable solutions to enhance teaching standards: first, requiring PGA instructors to upload a 30-minute lesson annually, which could foster transparency and inspire improvement; and second, initiating monthly Zoom meetings led by thought leaders, providing a platform for sharing knowledge and techniques. However, I acknowledge potential resistance due to fears of embarrassment and reluctance to showcase one's methods publicly. (19:16) Selecting the Right Golf Instructor This chapter explores how to cultivate emotional attachment to football games when you don't naturally support local teams, such as the Cincinnati Bengals or the Cleveland Browns. By placing bets on platforms like FanDuel, you can create a rooting interest, enhancing your enjoyment and engagement with the games. We also discuss the challenges and politics within the PGA of America regarding innovation and the reluctance to embrace new teaching methodologies due to potential backlash from established professionals. Finally, we address the confusion some might face when seeking golf lessons and how to find the right instructor to improve their game. (28:47) Establishing Standards in Golf Instruction This chapter explores the challenge of identifying great golf teachers and critiques the current system that often relies on reputation and word of mouth. We discuss the flaws in how professional golfers select instructors, noting that the same few teachers are recycled without necessarily being the best. There's a call for a more structured and standardized system to evaluate golf teachers, much like other professions have, to ensure quality instruction. We suggest that someone with a comprehensive understanding of golf instruction, like Brian, could lead an organization to establish fair and effective criteria for rating teachers. The conversation also touches on the need for better communication skills among instructors to improve how they convey their knowledge to students. (38:29) The Golf Instruction Industry Issues This chapter explores the cyclical nature of golf teaching trends and the resurgence of topics like the golfing machine and O'Grady's methodologies on social media platforms. We reflect on how these discussions have been extensively debated in forums and Facebook groups over the years, and yet continue to re-emerge with new generations. The idea of creating an archival system to document these recurring trends is discussed, emphasizing the need for a structured approach to preserving golf teaching history. Additionally, we analyze the influence of tour instructors and the fluctuation of their perceived credibility, noting that many gain prominence without having developed players from the ground up. The conversation also touches on the lack of dedicated media coverage for the golf teaching industry, suggesting that more consistent scrutiny could address ongoing issues and misconceptions. (50:08) The Future of Golf Instruction This chapter focuses on the future of the golf teaching business and how it can be improved. We explore the potential for customization in golf instruction, emphasizing the importance of tailoring lessons to individual players' needs. The conversation highlights the potential for increased visibility of personalized coaching through online platforms, allowing coaches to showcase their work with specific players. While AI is acknowledged as a transformative force, the discussion shifts to the shortcomings of golf telecasts, particularly the lackluster performance of current announcers. We discuss the idea of offering alternative commentary options, allowing viewers to choose more engaging and knowledgeable voices to enhance the viewing experience. The overall sentiment is that both golf instruction and telecasts have room for improvement, and there is hope for more personalized and entertaining approaches in the future. (54:42) Celebrating Golf Music Memories This chapter is all about having a good time with a nod to musical nostalgia and a touch of humor. We explore the joys of appreciating pickles and the fun of picking who you love, alongside a light-hearted mention of Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, specifically their classic song "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away." It's a mix of laughter and fond memories as we share this entertaining moment. Ryan and I have a great exchange, highlighting the fun and camaraderie of the group, while also playfully acknowledging the presence of cynicism. It's a heartfelt thanks to Ryan for joining us, as we wrap up another engaging session on Those Weekend Golf Guys. #GolfInstruction, #BrianManzella, #TeachingStandards, #PGAofAmerica, #Biomechanics, #Communication, #AdaptiveTeaching, #IndividualLearningStyles, #Certification, #InstructionalStandards, #AI, #PersonalizedCoaching, #GolfTelecasts, #MusicalNostalgia, #Camaraderie, #GolfCommunity, #GolfIndustry, #TeachingTrends, #GolfTeachers, #GolfMediaCoverage Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
