Onetime Fugees frontwoman Lauryn Hill released her solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, on August 25, 1998. It debuted at number one on the album charts, won the Grammy for album of the year, and is now considered by many to be one of the greatest albums of all time. To date, it remains Hill's only solo studio album. As part of our 25th-anniversary album series Silver Liner Notes, we're joined by poet, essayist, and author Hanif Abdurraqib to discuss the album's legacy and Lauryn Hill's career. Those close to me know that I am not a fan of the sequel or, even worse, the series, and that I consider the contemporary franchising of narrative a cultural malady of the same sort as the uselessly iterative paintings of Thomas Kincaid, or the entirety of the Oriental Trading Company catalog. The album, by producer Amerigo Gazaway, is a mashup of songs by Fugees emcee and hip hop legend Lauryn Hill, and the jazz and soul icon Nina Simone — nothing new here, just repackaged, right? Wrong. This week we are elated to have the director of the new film The Miseducation of Cameron Post, Desiree Akhavan. The film stars Chloë Grace Moretz as a young gay teenager in the early '90's forced to attend a conversion therapy camp. Desiree's choice of film to discuss this week is Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein. Desiree shares her special connection to the film and how it reminds her of her father. She is also critical of the movie, in particular the scene where Frankenstein's monster "ravages" Madeline Kahn. April and her explore how certain jokes have not aged well. Desiree discusses directing her current film; working with Chloë Grace Moretz, not making Christianity the butt of a joke, and trying to make her version of a "John Hughes film." She also bemoans the fact that American studios are totally unwilling to take any creative risks and how she had to move to London to get her TV show made.
