It's Marvel Monday and we're diving into the realm of Asgard! ABOUT THOR: THE DARK WORLD When the Dark Elves attempt to plunge the universe into darkness, Thor must embark on a perilous and personal journey that will reunite him with doctor Jane Foster. AIR DATE & NETWORK FOR THOR: THE DARK WORLD October 9, 2013 | Theatrical Release CAST & CREW OF THOR: THE DARK WORLD Chris Hemsworth as Thor Natalie Portman as Jane Foster Tom Hiddleston as Loki Anthony Hopkins as Odin BRAN'S MOVIE SYNOPSIS Loki is in troubleeeee. Daddy Odin is mad at him. Loki is like I just wanted to rule Earth as a benevolent god. What's the big deal? Odin tells him he should have him killed but instead, he'll just be imprisoned. Thor is doing Thor stuff, fighting off rock monsters and stuff with his buddies. When he gets back to Asgard, Odin tells him the time has come for him to get over Jane Foster and become king. Speaking of Jane Foster, she's in London, trying to eat with a dude but she can't stop thinking about Thor. Darcy shows up to tell her that the numbers and graphs and stuff are going nuts! They head to where the readings are happening and it takes them to an abandoned warehouse where there seems to be some sort of weird teleportation portal that is opening and closing at random. She gets sucked into the portal. While this is happening, Thor is talking to Idris Elba who is supposed to be keeping an eye on her and he's like oh weird, I actually can't see her right now. So he goes to Earth to check on her. By the time he gets there, she's now returned back to Earth. She's shocked to find out that it's been 5 hours. She sees Thor and smacks him a couple times for taking so long. The cops show up and try to arrest her for trespassing. When he touches her, this like red light radiates from her and sends them flying. Realizing that something is going on with her, Thor grabs her and transports them to Asgard to do some tests. Odin sees what's going on with her and is like oh yea I know what's up. That's dark elf-ish. It's called the Aether. And it's bad. Thor explains, every 5000 years, the 9 realms align and it causes the portals between these realms to get a bit wonky. So that's how she fell through that portal. But when she interacted with the Aether, she awakened Malekith - a dark elf who is up to no good. They attack Asgard and kill Thor's mom, Frigga, in the process of protecting Jane from them. Thor immediately wants revenge but Odin tells him to wait - they'll be back because we still have the Aether. Thor doesn't want to wait. So he asks Loki to help. Luckily, he knows about a secret portal to Svartalfheim, where they will use Jane to lure and confront Malekith, away from Asgard. In return, Thor promises Loki vengeance on Malekith for killing their mother. While in transport, Thor and Loki have a heart to heart. They yell at each other. They love each other. Classic brother stuff. There, Loki tricks Malekith into drawing the Aether out of Jane, but Thor's attempt to destroy the exposed substance fails. Malekith merges with the Aether and leaves in his ship. Loki is real hurt, on the verge of death. Thor is like I'll tell Dad you didn't suck after all. Afterwards, Thor and Jane discover another portal in a nearby cave and reunite in London with Darcy and Jane's mentor Dr. Erik Selvig who was kinda going crazy but he's fine. Jane knows about Malekith's plan to destroy the universe. Thor starts going through all these portals when Malekith ends up on Earth. Thor returns just in time to help transport Malekith away from Earth where he is crushed by his own ship that was also being transported at the same time. Thor returns to Asgard, where he declines Odin's offer to take the throne and tells Odin of Loki's sacrifice. As he leaves, Odin's form transforms to that of a grinning Loki. UH OHHHHHHH. If you ever needed proof that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is less a museum and more a cultural argument with a gift shop, Episode 13 of On The Record opens by doing what the institution does best: stretching the phrase “rock and roll” until it politely accommodates everyone from Wu‑Tang Clan to Shakira, with a quick stop at INXS (or, as Michael once heard on the BBC, the new Australian sensation “Inks”). Brian runs through the 2026 nominee list like a gig guide for the afterlife—The Black Crowes, Jeff Buckley, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, Phil Collins (solo, because apparently we're double-dipping now), Melissa Etheridge, Lauryn Hill, New Edition, Pink, Luther Vandross—and lands on the question that always makes the Hall quietly hilarious: who is this for, exactly? Michael's baffled by the ceremony mechanics (do nominees really “turn up hoping”?), while Brian reassures him it's not quite the Oscars, before casually dropping the detail that there's a public vote. Nothing says rock's rebellious spirit like “exercise our democratic right” via a link. The more interesting subtext, though, is what induction inevitably drags in: absence. Several nominees have key members who've died—Buckley, Michael Hutchence, Ian Curtis—prompting the kind of morbid logistics only a Hall of Fame can inspire. Michael wonders aloud whether New Order could be coaxed into a once-only appearance, and if so, would Peter Hook be anywhere near the bass, given the long-running fallout. Rock history, as ever, is part music, part family law. From there, the episode pivots into “telly as coping mechanism” territory.  Michael has started season two of Hijack, acknowledging (with Idris Elba's own executive-producer embarrassment) the inherent silliness of re-hijacking a man who has already been hijacked.  Brian, meanwhile, goes looking for light relief in bleak news cycles and discovers Resident Alien—a show he'd dismissed as fluff until it turns out to be fluff with enough teeth to feel like therapy. The alien-in-a-small-town premise becomes an excuse for a few sharp jokes about humanity's trajectory. But the main event is the week's shared homework: Paul McCartney: Man on the Run, the new documentary spanning the years between the Beatles' breakup and Lennon's murder.  Brian begins with dread—opening on “Silly Love Songs” is hardly a confidence-builder—but both hosts admit the film wins them over. They praise the craft: strong editing, collage-like imagery, and an effective “no talking heads (but their voices)” approach. Then they do the responsible thing and ask the awkward question: how honest can a documentary be when McCartney's own company financed it? Their answer is satisfyingly unresolved. Michael argues it's “warts-and-all enough” to avoid feeling like a total snow job—especially when the film lets other musicians (Nick Lowe, Chrissie Hynde) politely wonder what on earth Paul was thinking during the early, patchy years.  Brian agrees McCartney produced plenty of throwaway material, though he'll still go in to bat for Band on the Run and even dares to defend “Coming Up” (which Michael treats as a personal affront).  They both wish the doco lingered longer on the Lagos chapter, one of the few moments in the Wings story that feels like true risk rather than post-Beatles reputation management. The emotional spine, however, is Scotland. The documentary's portrayal of McCartney retreating to a remote farm with Linda is read here not as quaint pastoral cosplay, but as a survival strategy—grief, disorientation, and the sudden absence of the band-as-family.  The hosts talk candidly about parental loss, the Beatles as McCartney's “emotional prop,” and Lennon as the creative foil who kept Paul's “twee” instincts on a leash.  Linda comes out of it as both partner and lightning rod: necessary to him, mercilessly judged by everyone else.  Along the way, Brian remembers seeing Wings at the Myer Music Bowl in 1975 (yes, he was there), and the hosts revive Norman Gunston as the patron saint of awkward interviews—plus Michael's conspiracy theory that McCartney's infamous Japan marijuana bust may have been a deliberate exit strategy from a tour that Wings' hearts weren't in.  It's ridiculous. It's also, perversely, the kind of narrative logic rock biographies thrive on. By the end, the Hall of Fame is still a “broad church,” McCartney is still a genius with a questionable edit button, and Scotland remains the unlikely setting for both reinvention and retreat.  The biggest twist is that for two men who can't even land a sponsor, they spend 30 minutes proving the oldest rock cliché true: the past is never really over—someone's just nominated it. The episode kicks off with a deep dive into one of the biggest conversations happening in music right now: AI-generated music and copyright. Following the news that Apple is introducing transparency tags on Apple Music to disclose when artificial intelligence is used in songs, the crew debates what this means for the future of music. With the U.S. confirming that works created purely by AI cannot receive copyright protection without meaningful human authorship, the conversation quickly turns philosophical. Should artists be able to monetize music that uses AI tools? Trivelle argues that any use of AI in music should disqualify it from profit, while OShauN believes audiences will ultimately crave authenticity and push back against AI-generated art despite mass adpotion and current appeal. The discussion branches into whether AI samples in production count as “AI music,” how algorithms on streaming platforms quietly push AI songs into passive listening situations, and why younger listeners might still demand real artists and human connection. The crew also reacts to moments where artists faced backlash for using AI tools, and even jokes about which artists might need an AI tag themselves *ahem Ye* After the AI mega-conversation, Trivelle and OShauN briefly tease their excitement for Season 2 of Paradise, (before spoiling anything for DJXP) before the show shifts fully into movie territory. The guys unpack the BAFTA Awards controversy with actor John Davidson before diving into a celebration of Michael B. Jordan and the cast of Sinners, following their impressive run across the BAFTA Awards, NAACP Image Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. With Jordan stacking wins, the crew debates whether his dual performance has officially entered Academy Awards territory proving OShauN's early analysis right. That conversation leads to a larger appreciation of Ryan Coogler and the incredible way he launched his directing career with Fruitvale Station, before building a run of major box-office hits leading up to Sinners. Looking ahead to awards season, the hosts speculate about which films could compete with Sinners on Oscar night, including One Battle After Another, Marty Supreme, and Hamnet. Along the way the crew also touches on: Timothée Chalamet appearing less than thrilled about Jordan's SAG win Hollywood potentially fumbling the chance to cast Idris Elba as James Bond Speculation around Damson Idris possibly being considered for Black Panther Jonathan Majors appearing in a film produced by The Daily Wire Auston Matthews visiting the White House Jim Carrey seemingly channeling real-life The Mask energy The episode closes with a major entertainment industry development: Paramount Global potentially catching its white whale in securing Warner Bros. Discovery, after Netflix reportedly backed away from the massive $111 billion price tag.

Can AI make better art, literature and music than humans? What will the future of AI and creativity look like? And how do we even define creativity? These are some of the big questions swirling around right now. And it's something that we discuss a lot on the team. Some people argue that AI is becoming integral to the future of art; making the process more streamlined and time effective. Many creatives also use tools such as ChatGPT to generate ideas. But not everyone is a fan. Some creatives argue AI will never be able to capture human emotions, for example in poetry. Others worry about copyright and the impact on job security. To get to the bottom of this we spoke with three creatives to hear their views: Nigerian poet Ridwan Fasasi, British music producer Manon Dave, who's worked with Idris Elba & Will.i.am, and Veda Lee, an illustrator based in Hong Kong. Manon is also the Head of Future World Design in the BBC's Research and Development department. In Cosmosexuals: Screen Acting, Stardom, and Male Sex Appeal (U Texas Press, 2025), Dr. Mark Gallagher presents an examination of male screen sex appeal and the ways that race, ethnicity, and national origin combine with performance tools and film and television style to aid or inhibit actors' circulation on an increasingly global stage. Sex appeal is complicated, especially for screen actors. Looking good is not enough. Charisma and charm have to register when the camera rolls. And sexiness has to travel. Today's heartthrobs are expected to raise temperatures all around the world. Cosmosexuals theorizes male sex appeal as a form of capital in an age of international stardom. Screen scholar Dr. Gallagher assembles a diverse cast—Idris Elba, Pedro Pascal, Simu Liu, Ryan Gosling, and more—analyzing how each actor uses his appearance, voice, and movement to perform in ways that viewers across cultural divides register as sexually appealing. Cosmosexuals also explores the intersection of global sex appeal and exoticism in historical and contemporary contexts—from the malleable racial identities of Omar Sharif and Conrad Veidt to Mads Mikkelsen's “accented whiteness”—and assesses the barriers that confine nonwhite actors, in spite of their talent or celebrity. Far more than handsome faces and chiseled abs, male sex symbols emerge as laborers subject to disciplinary regimes steeped in patriarchy, racism, and structural inequity. As such, they have much to tell us about the economies of taste at work in the construction of screen masculinity and the terms of human desire. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. The gang's back together — Jordan Centry, Jonathan Williams, and Jason Allen King — with rum, coke (a lot of coke), and big 2026 energy. We open with an important announcement: Three's Comedy Tour hits the Cain Center for the Arts in Cornelius, NC on March 10. If you're in Charlotte, Huntersville, Mooresville, or anywhere nearby, grab tickets now at cainarts.org.  Then we get into awards season chaos, including the indie horror film “Good Boy” — shot from a dog's perspective — and the question nobody expected to debate: Can a dog be a great actor? (And does this open the door for more dog-led horror films?) From there, the conversation turns into a love letter to craft: acting choices, career pivots, and why certain performers (Michael B. Jordan, Timothée Chalamet, Idris Elba, Anne Hathaway, Matthew McConaughey, and more) hit different when they're locked in.  In the second half, we show love to the Charlotte comedy scene, shout out both clubs (The Comedy Zone + Duckworth's) and talk about what it means to get “passed” — plus why that kind of recognition matters for building a real comedy culture in the city. Finally, we set 2026 goals for each other (with equal parts encouragement and roasting), and close with a Would You Rather that turns into a full-on morality debate:  Generational wealth… or a portal gun that lets you travel the multiverse?   Three's Comedy Tour — March 10 (Cornelius, NC): cainarts.org   Upcoming shows: Jordan Centry opening for Shapel Lacey at Duckworth's, Jonathan Williams headlining Laugh at Lenny (Jan 16)   Like, Comment, Subscribe — and tell us: Money or Multiverse?

Find out why Boydy still made it his show of the week by listening to that particular strain of madness now! Note: time stamps are approximate as the ads throw them out, so are only meant as a guide. Pop Culture Happy Hour

Idris Elba is in full action hero mode in the Apple TV series Hijack. He stars as a corporate business negotiator onboard an airplane that is taken hostage by an eclectic bunch of assailants with mysterious motives. The series is very fun and very silly. Hijack just came back for a second season, so we thought it was the perfect time to revisit our conversation about the series.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits

Nick looks back at Season 44 of Saturday Night Live, a year that found the show in strong form and introduced Ego Nwodim as a standout new cast member. The regular lineup was stacked with reliable heavy hitters, including Heidi Gardner, Kate McKinnon, Alex Moffat, Mikey Day, Pete Davidson, and more, giving the season a solid mix of energy and consistency. The host list was just as impressive, with turns from John Mulaney, Sandra Oh, Idris Elba, Don Cheadle, and a deep bench of memorable appearances. Highlights from episodes hosted by Emma Stone, Awkwafina, Claire Foy, Paul Rudd, Adam Sandler, Adam Driver, Emma Thompson, and James McAvoy get their due, along with context around the musical guests and what was happening behind the scenes. It's a thoughtful, entertaining walkthrough of a season that delivered laughs, strong performances, and plenty of moments worth revisiting. [Ep 157]

A viral clip from Sandringham has American viewers fixated on an unexpected detail: what appeared to be a Buc-ee's plush toy in the crowd behind Prince William and his children during the Christmas Day church walk. The Texas convenience-store mascot has no UK footprint, making its appearance at a royal moment both baffling and instantly memeable, with speculation over how it ended up so close to the royals. We also revisit claims from Rob Shuter that Prince William objected to King Charles including Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie in the Christmas walk, with sources framing the disagreement as a wider clash over judgement and authority.Meanwhile, Kate is being described as an “eternal influencer” after recognition from British Vogue, as commentators point again to the so-called Kate effect on brands.Plus, renewed scrutiny of royal security after an intruder allegedly breached Kensington Palace grounds twice in the days before Christmas and has now pleaded guilty, with former royal protection officials raising questions about why he was able to return. We wrap with honours list headlines including Idris Elba's knighthood and Cynthia Erivo receiving an MBE, a redesigned British passport now bearing King Charles's coat of arms, and a new Amazon Prime Video documentary on the King's environmental work, narrated by Kate Winslet.Palace Intrigue is your daily royal family podcast, diving deep into the modern-day drama, power struggles, and scandals shaping the future of the monarchy.Hear our new show "Crown and Controversy: Prince Andrew" here.Check out "Palace Intrigue Presents: King WIlliam" here.
