The Comedy Godfather Speaks! Comedy Gold with Jon Plowman, 'The Comedy Producers' Comedy Producer!' on an Extraordinary Career in British TV Comedy

Send us a textEvery TV Sitcom yo've ever loved has been touched by this man's genius! What does it take to shepherding some of the most beloved British comedy shows from idea to cultural phenomenon? Jon Plowman OBE—the executive producer behind The Office, Absolutely Fabulous, Vicar of Dibley, Inside No. 9, and countless other comedy classics—offers a rare glimpse into the creative chaos that birthed these iconic programs. From surviving a motorcycle accident that landed him in the hospital (with a parade of celebrities visiting his bedside) to the surreal experience of being interviewed for Oxford University by candlelight during a power outage, Plowman's journey through British television is as unexpected as it is enlightening. His revelation about arriving at a meeting with French and Saunders three weeks before filming to find their "script" consisted of merely four Post-it notes on a wall surrounded by celebrity magazines speaks volumes about the creative genius he helped nurture throughout his career. The most valuable lesson from Plowman's storied career might be his philosophy of "never shouting cut"—allowing the moments between scripted lines and official filming to capture spontaneous comedy gold. This approach led to some of the most memorable moments in shows like Absolutely Fabulous, where improvisation flourished in the spaces between what was written and what naturally emerged on set.Beyond the humorous anecdotes—including the delightfully absurd story of settling a dispute between David Walliams and Matt Lucas about the appropriate size of a certain stain on a jacket lapel during a Little Britain sketch—lies Plowman's profound insight into recognizing and cultivating comedy genius. Whether championing Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's revolutionary mockumentary format for The Office or supporting Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton's anthology vision for Inside No. 9 against network pressures, Plowman's instinct for spotting innovation has shaped decades of entertainment.Ready to discover how the most iconic British comedy shows made it from concept to screen? Listen now and learn from the man Matt Lucas dubbed "The Godfather of Comedy."Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Nick and Angela welcome one of their favourite comics to Dish HQ. Broadcaster, comedian, writer and conductor Sue Perkins was born in South London. A Cambridge University graduate, Sue's journey into comedy began when she joined the prestigious Footlights, where she met her friend Mel Giedroyc. The duo quickly made a name for themselves, hosting Channel 4's Late Lunch and Light Lunch in the nineties, while also writing for the legendary French & Saunders and, later, Absolutely Fabulous in 2003. Her biggest TV job to date came in 2010, when she and Mel cohosted The Great British Bake Off for seven wildly successful series. Outside of television, Sue's broadcasting credentials include hosting Britain's best-loved radio comedy Just A Minute on BBC Radio 4. You can watch her new TV show Chess Masters: The Endgame on BBC iPlayer and listen to her new podcast Mel and Sue: Should Know By Now on Audlibe.  Nick pours Sue a Botivo, a non-alcoholic aperitivo, to start, while Angela prepares a mouthwatering Malaysian prawn laksa curry. The experts at Waitrose pair this with a La Val albariño and for dessert Angela makes Sue her favourite black forest gateau. Nick and Angela are (in their words) giddy at the sight of Sue Perkins sitting opposite them and our trio collapse into fits of laughter throughout this conversation. Sue loves to cook and recounts her best and worst food moments. She also talks about the time she met a shaman in a hot tub, and listen out for her incredible response to the End of Show Question. We're back from the North American Hill Sheep Show in Escanaba, Michigan.  This inaugural event showcased some British Hill Breed Sheep and some not-quite-Hill Breed Sheep, of course, but there was more to see, hear and smell.  Lovely vendor booths with soft woolens and fragrant soaps in abundance, sheepdog trials with panting puppies, food trucks (with some mighty fine brisket, thank you sir), and ice cream that is famous across all of the “M” roads. And then, there were the Brits.  The judges (and families) arrived in good spirits and raring to go, and the whole things was a true education in all things Sheepish. In addition to sheep, they do grow some Absolutely Fabulous people on those little islands, we must say.  Some were English, some Welsh, some Scottish and some Irish, but all delightful.  And good sports, to boot.  They will be sorely missed – at least until next spring (we hope).  Sincere thanks to all from the Backyard Green Films crew.  Our lives are better for having met you.Links:https://www.nahillsheepshow.com/ Support the show

My guest today is the writer, actress and comedian Helen Lederer. Helen began as a stand-up comedian in the “comedy swamp” of the 1980s, where women were like hen's teeth and rose to fame with her sloaney girl at the bar in the BBC Comedy ‘Naked video'. Then came Saturday Night Live, The Young Ones, French and Saunders and Bottom with Rik Mayall. But she's probably best known as Catriona the dippy journalist in the TV series Absolutely Fabulous. It was after writing her first novel, Losing It, that Helen set up the Comedy Women In Print prize to put funny women's writing on the map and help ensure the next generation wouldn't have to put up with the lack of recognition she endured. (Also, she was pissed off!)Now the woman Dawn French calls “the third funniest woman in the world” has written a hilarious and frequently painful memoir about surviving that swamp, Not That I'm Bitter. She tells truths, she names names and she gives herself an absolute hiding!Helen and I got together over a Zoom cuppa to discuss life as the lone woman on the 80s comedy circuit and why being a pioneer is all very well, but she'd rather have had mainstream success! She also talked about professional jealousy, not “being in the A team”, fear of authority, why she's spent her life on a diet (remember Limmits biscuits?!) And being tougher on herself than anyone else.* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Not That I'm Bitter by Helen Lederer and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com• And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. During and following its first and only UK television broadcast, the show attracted a considerable furor,[1] resulting in an estimated 1,000,000 phone call enquiries to the BBC switchboard on the night of broadcast, comprising a mixture of complaints and praise for the programme's unique presentation.[2] This outrage is often compared to Orson Welles' 1938 The War of the Worlds radio broadcast and the 1994 Without Warning television film, both of which also caused nationwide panic in the United States. But also: Baldur's Gate 3, Dawn of the Dead, Horror in the High Desert, Lake Mungo, Spirits of the Dead and Video Archives, The First Omen, The Omen, Immaculate, Maxxxine, Task Master, Red Dwarf, Absolutely Fabulous, The Stone Tapes, Gothic, The Guardian, Don't Look Now, The Conjuring 2, and more!NEXT WEEK: The Blood on Satan's Claw (1971)Follow them across the internet:Bloodhaus:https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodhttps://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/ Drusilla Adeline:https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/ Joshua Conkelhttps://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/

There may be some mention of the relationship, the embarrassment of watching Fist of Fun with Richard's dad, Rich and Julia's shared spirit guide, the extraordinary nicknames of her former partners (including Richard's), some controversy and disagreement about how they broke up and the drunken fights and near death experiences of the Time Gentlemen Please cast. In a series of intimate conversations with actor & director Brendan O'Hea, she guides us through Shakespeare's plays with incisive clarity, revealing the secrets of her rehearsal process and inviting us to share in her triumphs, disasters, and backstage shenanigans. Interspersed with vignettes on audiences, critics, company spirit and rehearsal room etiquette, she serves up priceless revelations on everything from the craft of speaking in verse to her personal interpretations of some of Shakespeare's most famous scenes, all brightened by her mischievous sense of humour, striking level of honesty and a peppering of hilarious anecdotes, many of which have remained under lock and key until now. In this season, Prime Minister Robert Sutherland faces more challenges than ever before. Just as his popularity plumets in light of a new, controversial police-protest bill, his administration is plunged into chaos when an environmental demonstration ends with grave consequences. As the inquest into the events at the protest gets underway, the Prime Minister and his government begin to realise that all is not as it seems. And with his daughter potentially embroiled with the group behind it all, his interest in the case isn't purely political, adding further turmoil to his already strained homelife. The investigation quickly takes them into the dark underbelly of the nation's power, and the PM starts to doubt whom of his team he can truly trust. The crisis spirals further to encompass not only the urgent threat of environmental destruction but also the malignant corruption of the arms industry, the rise of shadowy corporate security firms and the grim reality of the UK's relationship with a crucial ally. The rebellion will push Robert Sutherland to the edge and force him to question what he's personally willing to sacrifice in order to stay in power. https://www.skygroup.sky/en-gb/article/-the-explosive-third-instalment-of-sky-original-drama-cobra-rebellion-coming-to-sky-max-and-now-on-12-october-

I am so thrilled and actually very starstruck to be joined by the one and only Joanna Lumley on today's episode. I grew up watching her on Absolutely Fabulous, have admired her work with the Gurkhas, and have been fascinated by her unconventional upbringing and theatrical career. It was an honour to speak to Joanna about her incredibly colourful life: her career ups and downs, the pressure she faced growing up and her attitude towards mental health in the modern world. Whilst Joanna's view might be one you don't necessarily agree with, we can't deny that mental health has become a huge buzzword in society. There's an epidemic of influencers that are speaking on mental health's behalf with little understanding and I do think it's very important we properly educate ourselves about mental health as well as how complicated and nuanced so much of it is rather than just jumping on the bandwagon.Follow Hurt to Healing on Instagram: @hurttohealingpod--A big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout. Fresh from the Podcast Movement Evolutions conference in Las Vegas, Theresa & Sherry share a bit of what they gleaned and observed, during this episode. The hosts agree that while it did not deliver in terms of expectations, it absolutely provided the necessary landscape for clarity. Instead of panels of successful podcasters eager to share their industry wisdom, hacks, and lessons-learned, the rooms were populated mostly with industry professionals sharing stories relating to their products. Many had wonderful goods & services to offer, and one must be discerning when listening to the din of voices. That is a practice in and of itself. They discuss the idea of more and abundance – Abundance is more but rooted firmly in a purpose. Revisiting the why, periodically, is essential to staying aligned. More for more's sake, like expectations, can lead to disappointment. Go for the gold, the copper, the stone, or wherever the heart of your why is rooted, and abundance is the reward. In the heightened realities, disparate realities, changing realities, and steady realities experienced in five days in Las Vegas, the hosts discuss how it might be to live in equanimity. Having preferences is human and standards is great, but being fully present and okay with things as they are is an option that practices offer when done with consistency. Evidence of the story Sherry shared about the Dala Lama could not be verified, but the essence of it remains true. How can we feel the same satisfaction and contentment (equanimity) whether consuming a five-star meal or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. What was revealed through the whole and all its parts, is that Anecdotal Anatomy (the podcast) will continue to expand in content and seed new growth through Anecdotal Anatomy in Action (live and virtual events & programs). This episode is dedicated to Las Vegas, a loud, bright, mythical, action-packed teacher. “Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.” Scarlet Begonias, Grateful Dead Sources:Anecdotal Anatomy (please visit website for updates on events, programs and more)Neon MuseumThe following (OmegaMart & Dramcorp are part of the immersive art and AI experience)oMegaMartDramcorps Couldn't isolate the Absolutely Fabulous clip, but for those interested in watching the episode, it is Season 6, Episode 3 (When Edina is at the Commune)If anyone knows more about the Dalai Lama story, please email us at: AnecdotalAnatomy@gmail.com Our Amazing Team:Judith George - Editor (video & audio)Keith Kenny - MusicCindy Fatsis - Photography

For this month's second Britainology... well, we tried. We booked a guest and we got it cleared to record on location in a chippy! And then the guest had an emergency and the chippy wasn't really suitable to record in. So we ate fish and chips and then discussed the meal, plus the history of the dish, plus our experiences in chippies and takeaways in general. And then we happened upon the idea of Mr. Waluigi's Fish and Chips where they have a pro-ISIS patriotic mural. And then Milo learned a beautiful turn of phrase that will stick with him forever: pig husks--enough is enough!!!
