The gang are back for the new season and we've not been replaced by AI! We're kicking off by talking about The Miseducation Of Cameron Post (2018), a film which revisits the same topic as one of the very first films we did on the podcast. But where But I'm A Cheerleader tackled conversion camps in a camp, pastel coloured dreamscape, TMOCP is more of a realistic nightmare.Join us as we discuss the insidious niceness of the adults running the conversion camp, the differences between the book and the film, and on the importance of friendship in LGBTQ+ communities, both on screen and in real life. And if you have listened and you want to hear the short story Alice wrote for Maxine Peake, friend of TMOCP's director Desiree Akhavan, you can find that here: https://factoryinternational.org/factoryplus/new-writers/mycelium/ CN: Mention of self harm, discussion of physical and psychological abuse at conversion camps, swearing, spoilers and discussion of a sexual nature.

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that wants to hypnotize you via app. This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Shantell Yasmine Abeydeera (@shantell_yasmine_abeydeera), writer/actor/producer/director and founder of Thornbyrd Films, a queer-female led production company, and triple threat (actor/writer/producer) Emily Goss (@emilygoss650) to talk about Thornbyrd's 2023 psychological thriller Healed. If you haven't had a chance to watch the film yet, you can rent it now on Amazon Prime. We highly recommend taking the time to watch it before listening, as this episode is very spoiler heavy. We talked with Emily and Shantell Yasmine (Yaz) about the creation of Thornbyrd Films, the utilization of genre films like Healed as catalysts for important conversations that can inspire social change within a broader audience, and why it is so refreshing to not have to watch yet another coming out story. We love how Healed kicks off without explaining to the audience how we got to this point. It introduces the main characters as an already established married couple, making no attempts to explain Olivia's pregnancy or how the characters got together.  Healed follows the story of celebrity couple Olivia, played by Emily Goss, and Jazz, played by Yaz, as they attend an intimate meditation retreat at the invitation of renowned mindfulness expert Georgia. Although the retreat at first feels like a nice getaway, particularly for the heavily pregnant and overwhelmed Olivia, it quickly becomes clear that all is not as it seems. When Georgia's unorthodox therapy sessions evoke troubling memories for Jazz, she becomes skeptical of Georgia's methods. As she digs deeper, Jazz uncovers a sinister plot that puts her and Olivia at the center of a research experiment that neither of them would have ever consented to.  This film feels like Get Out and The Miseducation of Cameron Post had a lovechild. Although the storyline heavily deals with the traumas of conversion therapy and internalized biphobia, we feel that it works really well as a thriller. It can be hard as queer people to watch movies like Cameron Post, because the traumas hit a little too close to home. However, when conversion therapy is approached as the basis for a thriller, it takes on a whole different feeling, with the mystery serving as a sort of barrier between the viewer and the would-be trauma of it all. If you are a fan of suspenseful thrillers with wild twists and turns, you will love Healed.  This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. From Cock Ring Ken and his buddy™️ Allan to the fabulous rainbow manes of the genderless Troll dolls, queerness is woven throughout the shiny plastics of all our most iconic childhood toys. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with TikTok and Instagram influencer Connor Clary (@connor.clary) to chat about all of the gayest toys from our childhoods. Whether you were aware of your queerness as a child or not, it's likely that you interacted with your toys in ways that would have literally everyone highkey questioning your sexuality nowadays. And regardless of what your orientation is now, if you owned Barbies, you were absolutely scissoring them together any chance you got. Honestly that's on Mattel for making Barbies so damn good at scissoring! But it is not just how we played with our toys that makes them scream homosexual. It's truly just that the toys themselves are giving gay.  Barbie was queer from the jump, arriving on the toy scene with one agenda in mind, to shake up the status quo for little girls. From their lack of genitals to their impressive scissoring skills, it's a real wonder that anyone ever thought they were straight! Then of course there is Barbie's beloved beard, Ken. There have been a lot of iterations of Ken, but there are perhaps none more gay than Earring Magic Ken and Sugar Daddy Ken. In fact, Earring Magic Ken (lovingly known as Cock Ring Ken by gay men everywhere) was so visibly queer that Dan Savage published an article about him titled Ken Comes Out, sending Mattel into a panic and causing them to discontinue the doll.  Beyond Barbie, several other childhood favorites made our gayest toy lists including Bop It! (literally a handjob training machine), The Game of Life (you can put two little pink figures into the front of the car, no one is going to stop you), the Furby (essentially what the Babadook would keep as a pet), and Troll dolls (genderless slightly unsettling very naked rainbow creatures). We also bust out some deep cuts, looking into the inherent queerness of Pogs and Slap Bracelets (if you remember these, go take an Advil for your back).  We know one thing for sure, our childhood toys Should've Been Gay.  Follow us on the platform formerly known as Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay questions at the end of every episode. You can also join us on Facebook.com/lezhangoutpod and Instagram (@lezhangoutpod). Today we are joined by Chloë Grace Moretz and this episode is all about setting personal boundaries, stopping people pleasing, letting go of people who no longer serve YOU and saying “f**k it!” Now that's the spirit! Believe it or not but Chloë has been acting since the age of 5, and now at 25 years old has already got 50 acting credits on her CV (talk about booked and busy!) including the epic ‘Kick-Ass' movies, the chilling ‘Carrie', the comedy hit, ‘Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising' and the epic LGBTQIA+ movie, ‘The Miseducation of Cameron Post'. Now she is starring in the blockbuster new Amazon Prime Video TV show, ‘The Peripheral'. Adapted for the screen from William Gibson's sci-fi novel, the show follows Chloë's character Flynne, as she unearths through gaming, a connection to an alternative reality with a dark future. The drama is brilliant but you might get a headache trying to figure out WTAF is going on - if you are anything like me! I have also always admired Chloë's advocacy for LGBTQIA+ rights and encouraging people to get out there and vote but I wasn't quite prepared for how much I was going to love talking to Chloë. Buckle up for a lot of laughter and some great life lessons in this episode! Today Chloë talks about growing up in the entertainment industry and the amount of reverse ageism and sexism she has faced in her career to date. Now, firmly in her own power and voice, Chloë also shares some amazing words on building boundaries and letting go of ‘people pleasing,' and relationships that no longer serve you. That is something I have ALWAYS struggled with so this turned into quite the therapy session for me, so I hope it helps you too! We also talk about the sheer power of Miley Cryus's song ‘The Climb' - it's one of the great underrated classics of our time, let's be honest - and Chloë shares how she is a certified gamer in real life too, who loves to, ‘f**k s**t up!' Watch out Super Mario! I love Chloë's new ‘f**k it,' ethos for life so I hope it also inspires you to let go, and do what is right for YOU in every given situation.

I lied and said that last week was the last episode for a while and then I got a very exciting email about interviewing this week's guest and here we are. That is guest is New York based cinematographer Ashley Connor, someone whose work I have been a big fan of for quite some time. She has lensed some of my favourite independent films, including Tramps, First Match and The Miseducation of Cameron Post, and is a regular collaborator with Josephine Decker, having shot Butter on the Latch, Thou Wast Mild and Lovely and Madeline's Madeline.  Ashley has also shot music videos for Angel Olsen, Beach House and MGMT, plus worked on TV shows like Broad City, Ramy and High Maintenance, so I think it's safe to say that Ashley is probably the coolest DP working today, and certainly someone whose work I am just always in awe of. She came on the podcast to talk about her career thus far, but also shooting a new movie called True Things, directed by Harry Wootliff, who was on the podcast many, many episodes ago talking about her directorial debut Only You. True Things is her second feature and stars Ruth Wilson as a dissatisfied woman who gets into a passionate and slightly toxic relationship with Tom Burke and must sort of find her way back to herself. I think it's a fearless and visceral and feverish piece of cinema about female sexuality and desire, and I think Harry is fast becoming one of our most exciting filmmakers in the UK and I think Ashley's cinematography - which has always been very muscular and balletic and dynamic - is a perfect match for depicting this tempestuous relationship. We also talk about how Ashley got her start in indie films, as well as the work she did to support herself, how she has developed this movement and emotion-based cinematography practice, shooting sex scenes and finding a new language for the depiction of women's pleasure, working with and responding to actors, and why cinematography is often like being another actor in the room, working with Lena Dunham on her latest film, Sharp Stick, as well as power structures on film sets and how Ashley prioritises radical vulnerability to change that dynamic. It was a really special conversation. I think Ashley is a very talented artist and filmmaker and proved also to be a very genuine and compassionate person and just someone I think we're very lucky to have making movies and putting women's feelings and desires at the forefront of cinema.  True Things is out in UK cinemas now. If you go to www.truethings.film you can find showings near you and I highly recommend that you do. This is episode 110 of Best Girl Grip.
