"Power Ballad" is a 2026 musical comedy-drama film directed and co-written by John Carney, starring Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas, Havana Rose Liu, and Jack Reynor. The film tells the story of Rick Power (Rudd), a wedding singer, who meets washed-up former boy band singer Danny Wilson (Jonas) at a wedding one night and bonds over a jam session. After the jam session, Danny steals one of Rick's songs, and it becomes a number-one hit. This brings Danny back into the spotlight, leading Rick to seek revenge and recognition. The film had its world premiere at the Dublin International Film Festival and has received positive reviews for its two performances, Carney's direction, and, of course, the music. Carney was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from Lionsgate and will expand to more theaters on June 5th. Thank you, and enjoy! Big stream or big screen? This week, Tosin Ajayi and Shaun Harris fly solo as Sharon enjoys a getaway in Dorset and Holly explores the culture of London. The duo settles in to decide if your hard-earned money is better spent at the cinema or in the comfort of your own home.Lee Cronin's The Mummy: Tosin dives into this Blumhouse production, which swaps desert adventures for a harrowing psychological horror story in Cairo and New Mexico. While praising the performances of Jack Reynor and the child actors, Tosin finds the film's two-hour runtime a bit bloated. Rating: 3/5 Stars40th Anniversary Re-release of Akira: Shaun witnesses the legendary 1988 anime on the big screen for the first time. He finds the first hour of neo-Tokyo biker gang warfare and military experimentation gripping, though he admits the final act gets a bit "slow and weird." Rating: 3/5 StarsEagles Over London (Amazon Prime): Shaun revisits this 1969 "Macaroni War" film (the Italian war movie equivalent of a Spaghetti Western). He enjoys the D-Day sabotage plot and the classic 1960s use of split-screen, despite the technically inaccurate period equipment. Rating: 3/5 StarsCaptive Audience (BBC iPlayer): Tosin explores this three-part true-crime documentary about the 1972 disappearance and miraculous return of Steven Stayner. While the first two episodes are riveting, Tosin feels the final installment falls into the trap of sensationalism. Rating: 3/5 StarsWith every review landing a solid average, Tosin and Shaun declare this week a dead tie between the cinema and the streaming platforms.Next Week: The team prepares for the highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic!Join the Conversation!Think we're crazy for giving Akira only three stars? Then they turn to Lee Cronin's The Mummy (2025), the Blumhouse/Atomic Monster horror that has the internet divided. Jack Reynor leads a cast through something that plays less like a classic mummy tale and more like a psychological body horror spiral in the vein of Evil Dead Rise and Pet Sematary. For this week's main podcast review, Katie Johnson, Josh Parham, and Cody Dericks join me to review and discuss "Lee Cronin's The Mummy," starring Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, May Calamawy, Verónica Falcón, and Natalie Grace. A reimagining of "The Mummy" franchise (Not THAT "Mummy" franchise starring Brendan Fraser), the film is produced by James Wan and Jason Blum and brings a much darker, more sinister edge to the franchise than has ever been seen before. It injects the same style and tone Cronin brought to the "Evil Dead" franchise, producing something gory, shocking, and punishingly brutal for both the characters and the audience. Writer-director Lee Cronin joins No Film School to discuss how he approached reimagining The Mummy through the lens of family trauma, mystery, and body horror. In conversation with GG Hawkins, Cronin breaks down the emotional architecture behind effective horror, the challenge of staging fear in broad daylight, and the way Irish storytelling, personal experience, and practical effects continue to shape his work. He also reflects on building a long-term creative partnership, collaborating with horror powerhouses like Jason Blum and James Wan, and the discipline required to keep refining a film all the way through the edit. In this episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins and guest Lee Cronin discuss... How Cronin infused The Mummy with mystery, family drama, and horror Why broad daylight can make horror feel even more unsettling The emotional groundwork required to make gore and shock land with audiences How themes from The Hole in the Ground evolved into The Mummy Why character is always the engine of fear in Cronin's films How Cronin thinks about the “contract” he makes with audiences from the earliest story stage The practical and creative lessons he learned from years of making corporate videos and commercials What it was like collaborating with Jack Reynor, Jason Blum, and James Wan How shooting in Ireland and Spain helped shape the scale and texture of the film Advice for emerging filmmakers on collaborators, restraint, and cutting what does not work Memorable Quotes: “Writing is not hard at all. Knowing what to write is incredibly difficult.” “Nothing is more exciting to me than watching something I've created with an audience and hearing them vocalize, scream, drop the popcorn, whatever it might be.” “If something doesn't work, don't leave it there.” “Never be afraid.” Guests: Lee Cronin Resources: Lee Cronin's The Mummy on IMDb Vote for No Film School's Webby-nominated explainer video Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web: No Film School Facebook: No Film School on Facebook Twitter: No Film School on Twitter YouTube: No Film School on YouTube Instagram: No Film School on Instagram

John Carney — director of Once, Begin Again, and Sing Street — is back with a new music-centered, Irish-based romance, but is he striking the same old chords? That's right, we're reviewing Flora and Son this week, which premiered at the Sundance 2023 Film Festival and is just now hitting streaming. We discuss whether or not the movie fine-tunes the Carney formula, plus we look at the critical reaction and play the Rotten Tomatoes Game. Flora and Son was directed and written by John Carney and features original songs by Carney and Gary Clark. The cast includes Eve Hewson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jack Reynor, and Orén Kinlan. It opened in limited theatrical release on September 22 and is now streaming on Apple TV+ (with the exception of Ireland, which will be getting a wide release of the film on February 23, 2024).
