Liz Thomas is a professional hiker, speaker, and outdoor writer who held the women's self-supported speed record on the 2,181-mile long Appalachian Trail from 2011-2015. Called a "thru-hiking legend" by Outside Magazine, Liz has also hiked 20+ long distance trails including the Triple Crown of Hiking (AT, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail) and first known traverses of the Wasatch Range and Chinook Trail. Her innovative urban thru-hikes of 14 cities led The Guardian to call her “The Queen of Urban Hiking.” Liz is a former staff writer for the New York Times/Wirecutter and current Editor-in-Chief for the outdoor web-magazine Treeline Review as well as contributing editor and columnist of “Ask a Thru-hiker” for Backpacker Magazine. She's the author of Long Trails: Mastering the Art of the Thru-hike, which received the 2017 National Outdoor Book Award for Best Instructional book with judges calling it destined to become the “Bible of the Sport.” Discussed in this episode: --Barriers to entry in thru-hiking --The story of how Liz got her trail name, Snorkel --Urban thru-hiking --The ALDHA West video on Liz's Seattle urban hike --How urban settings interact with redlining, race, class, gender, etc. --The Trust for Public Land --NYC playgrounds thru-hike --Inman 300 trail --Sign petition to support the Parks, Jobs, and Equity Act --Truffle Pigs Bistro --Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning by Cathy Park Hong --Quote: “I had spent a lot of unnecessary money and pain learning about thru-hiking the hard way, and yet, thru-hiking had still changed my life and rewired me into a much more emotionally stable and happier person… I really wanted to share that joy with others while also minimizing the barriers to entry that I experienced.” --Follow Liz: www.eathomas.com or @lizthomashiking. --–Follow Social Sport: Website, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter –-Subscribe to the Social Sport Newsletter *This episode is sponsored by OPE Running. Elaine Bissonho is known as Brazil nut on the trail. She grew up in Brazil and currently lives in Bend, Oregon. She became the third female to earn her double triple crown from ALDHA West this past Fall at the Gathering, putting her in the ranks with Anish and Yogi.We talk about her 2018 hike on the PCT when she hiked from Mexico to Canada in 66 days. She pushed herself, knowing that Anish had done it in 60 days. Brazil Nut took three showers on this thru hike and a bunch of cold plunges in various lakes along the route. She talks about her fears on trail. How she handles them and what are her fears.A friend in Boston encouraged her to go on her first hike. “I don’t hike!” was Brazil Nut’s first response. Crazy to think that. They ended up hiking in New Hampshire and she went on many hikes in that area afterward. The White Mountains were her first love.Stretching is very important for Brazil Nut. She would use her elbows to work on her legs and she tries to keep her feet lubed up. She uses three different types of socks which she changes out during the day along with a healthy dose of vaseline. She is hoping to do the Arizona Trail, Great Divide Trail and the Pacific Northwest Trail this year.Follow her on Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/elainebrazilnut/Six Moons DesignTents and morehttps://www.sixmoondesigns.comWaymark Gear CompanyHeavy duty ultralight backpackshttps://www.waymarkgearco.comDon't forget to shop our Cascade Hiker Hats and Bumper Stickers!Join Me at Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=5262583Twitter @N_CascadehikingLike our Facebook Page Cascade Hiker PodcastOn Instagram Cascade Hiker PodcastCheck out Whiskey Fever: https://www.reverbnation.com/whiskeyfever The song used in the intro is 'Tall Grass' from their album Gonna Wake Up This Whole Town.

In Episode 17, Jester and I speak via phone about his 2013 DVD release  "Embrace The Brutality" which documents his 3100 mile thru-hike on the Continental Divide Trail. In the podcast, Jester talks about his first backpacking trip, his high and low moments on the CDT, what it takes to hike, film, and produce a major film on the Trail, and a major hike that he has planned for Europe.  Jester also offers some general advice to those that plan to hike the CDT and gives great insight for those that are contemplating a major hike through the Rockies. In September, Jester will receive the prestigious Triple Crown award at the ALDHA-West event which is given to those that complete the entire Appalachian Trail, Continental Divide Trail, and Pacific Crest Trail.  Congrats to him - because there are only a handful of backpackers that will ever earn that distinction. For more information on Jester and his DVD's - which include a documentary of his thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail - follow this link to his website or visit his page on Facebook.
