In today's episode, I'm joined by Ms. Ellie Penner, an art historian whose work has taken her across the globe—from studying Himalayan art forms in Nepal and Ladakh to exploring ancient sculptures at Ajanta and Ellora, and observing masterpieces in the museums of the U.S. But beyond her deep love for centuries-old art, Ellie is an adventurer at heart. Raised in Colorado, she's an outdoors enthusiast who jumps at any chance to head into the mountains. And that's exactly what she did—on a 32-day, 483-milethru-hike on the breathtaking Colorado Trail, accompanied by two of her best friends. What followed was a trail full of stories: hitchhiking into nearby towns, camping under the stars, weathering hailstorms, naming each other with quirky trail nicknames, dodging wildlife, and pushing through sore, blistered feet—all while laughing nonstop. This episode is full of warmth, adventure, and some seriously hilarious moments. I don't consider myself a hiker, but after talking to Ellie, I found myself itching to plan a trip like this with my best friends. Come along for the ride—you'll laugh as much as I did.Tune in and get inspired—whether you're an art lover, anaspiring hiker, or just here for the wild stories.---------------------------------------------Follow Ellie on Instagram ---------------------------------------------To buy yourself a copy of the travel journal, click here: Travel Journal (currently shipping within India only)---------------------------------------------To support our team and donate generously, please click SUPPORT .Like our work? Rajan Simkhada, of Earthbound Expeditions in Nepal, joins Jeremy to talk about this new route from south to north across Nepal, which Rajan pioneered. The route takes trekkers from the Indian border on the plains of Southern Nepal through the foothills of the Himalayas, and finally through the high Himalayas to the border with China. Along the way, trekkers experience a wide variety of cities and towns, and the various etnnic groups and cultures that inhabit them. This is a new trek in Nepal like no other, and gives trekkers the opportunity to hike in the winter in Nepal.

In this episode of The Free Outside Podcast, I chat with thru-hiker and content creator Stella Hikes, who is preparing for one of the biggest challenges in long-distance hiking—the Calendar Year Triple Crown. Stella shares her hiking background, the inspiration behind attempting this ambitious feat, and the intense planning process required to hike the Appalachian Trail (AT), Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), and Continental Divide Trail (CDT) in a single year.We dive into her experience on the long trails, her approach to efficiency and nutrition, her strategy for tackling snow and weather challenges, and the importance of storytelling and content creation on the trail. I also shares insights from my own Calendar Year Triple Crown in 2016, including snow struggles, gear choices, and the evolution of thru-hiking.
Strider comes back on Hike to discuss completing his 2024 thru hike on the International Appalachian Trail (IAT). He started on the Pinhoti Trail and went all the way up to the tip of Newfoundland, though his hike was not always linear. We learn more about that in this interview, including how this hike led to his completion of the C2C (Coast to Coast) trail. We chat about some of the logistics of hiking across the Northern border including: border crossings, hitching a ride, camp sites, hiking during hunting season and resupplies. Send us a textAlright, meet Tara Dower, AKA "Candy Mama” (a trail name born of sugar and love for her trail mates); while she's refined some of those habits… the sweet, sweet nickname still stands.Tara set the Fastest Known Time (FKT) on the Appalachian Trail, powering through 2,189 miles in 40 days, 18 hours, and 5 minutes. To put that in perspective, that's like running from Calgary to Toronto…while climbing Mt. Everest 16 times. (My feet hurt just thinking about it!)So Who's This Crazy MOFO? Tara is the definition of grit, making it on the news as an endurance phenom. This is not Tara's first stab at the Appalachian Trail, previously accomplishing a thru-hike over the course of 5 months in 2019. Her first attempt in 2017 ended early due to a massive panic attack just 8 days in. If that bit of perseverance isn't enough, Tara shifted her goals and intentions with completing this hike to enjoy the challenge, not just another box to tick!Pit Crew to the Rescue! Tara is a metaphorical race car, fueled by a pit crew swapping out shoes like tires. Along the way, Tara raised over $50,000 for Girls on the Run along the way, mentoring the next gen of fearless female athletes. Her feat is part of a new wave of women pushing limits in endurance running. Even a powerhouse like Tara doesn't celebrate till it's over, claiming that she knew she'd made it when she got close enough that “Even if I fall and break my leg, I'll crawl! ” (Talk about GRIT baby)Whether you're an endurance athlete or you've just got a tough goal, take a note from Candy Mama: set your ego aside, follow your curiosity, and remember—if you don't try, you'll never know. What's Inside:Endurance Runner, Tara Dower's FTK on the Appalachian Trail. The grit, discipline, and team support of an endurance athlete. How shifting goal setting can aid anxiety.Following your curiosity to accomplish even the seemingly impossible! Maybe you're an endurance athlete already in awe of Tara Dower. Or you might be thinking, Oh hell no, Oonagh, you won't catch me on a trail like that... Either way, you probably have a tough goal on the horizon. Take this episode as your permission to go for it and even permission to fail! What's that goal for you? In this episode, we sit down with Audrey Payne, a long-distance backpacker, acclaimed writer, and nature enthusiast who calls Boulder, Colorado, her home. Audrey's incredible journey from overcoming a debilitating back injury to thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail (AT) forms the heart of our conversation. Raised in Upstate New York and inspired by her transformative experiences abroad in New Zealand and Madagascar, Audrey has always had a deep love for the outdoors. Her passion led her to pursue environmental science and journalism, but the pressures of her studies and early career eventually led to burnout and a severe back injury. Undeterred, she found inspiration in Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods" and set her sights on the AT, a journey she chronicles in her newly published memoir. Throughout our chat, Audrey shares the highs and lows of her trail life, from the supportive community she found to the physical and mental challenges she faced. We explore her trail name ‘Glowstick,' her trail family dynamics, and the lessons learned from her trek. Audrey also opens up about the post-trail depression she experienced and how writing her memoir helped her process the journey. As she plans future hikes, including the possibility of tackling the Pacific Crest Trail, Audrey's story is a powerful reminder of resilience and the joy of embracing life's adventures. Tune in to hear her inspiring story and gain insights into the life of a dedicated thru-hiker and nature lover. *** Don't miss the latest episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast, released every Tuesday and Thursday at 7 AM UK time! Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week's show: - How exploring barefoot movement in activities like hiking offers physical benefits and fosters a deeper connection with one's body and environment. - How trail maintenance reflects the evolving needs of hikers and the importance of preserving wildlife corridors through trail cultivation. - How thru-hiking connects with the earth, simplifies life, and allows individuals to experience discomfort to feel grounded. - Why you should balance your professional and personal development through nature experiences. - Why travel encourages individuals to be open to the unknown, confront vulnerabilities, and engage with unfamiliar cultures for personal growth. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are once again loving love. That's right, it's the 4th edition of our Valentine's Day-themed show. Today we catch up with Wesley and Marie Black, known on trail as Yeti Legs and Basecamp. Less than two years after meeting, they were not only married but together taking on a thru-hike of the PCT. Wesley and Marie pull no punches in sharing the nitty-gritty of making a relationship work during a thru-hike and are especially candid about their on-trail sex life including their hygiene practices, foreplay, what they use for lubrication, best positions in a tent, and more. This one is entertaining, enlightening, and slightly erotic. Strap in. We wrap the show with what we would do if we could be our significant other for a day, the triple crown of petty fights we have with our partners, Marie shares a plastic melting shit story, and Chaunce has a very dumb stupid thing of the week. Hello to you listening in Daniels, West Virginia!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more for a great cause) for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world, measuring 2,198.4 miles in length in 2023. Originally aired July 15, 2015As if climbing a typical 14,000 ft mountain isn't enough of an accomplishment, Junaid and his buddy, successfully summited every one of the 58 Colorado 14ers in a single continuous hike. The journey was about 1,300 miles with a total elevation gain close to 300,000 feet. They hiked desolate Forest Service roads, class 5 traverses, many sections of the Colorado and Continental Divide Trail, as well as cross-country travel. In episode 109 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, we discuss how running events, whether trail or city courses, can become more sustainable, reduce waste, and be more inclusive for their communities. To help me do that, I sat down to chat with Brian Mister. Brian Mister (he/him) is the co-founder of Around the Crown 10K, presented by Truist (ATC10K), founded in 2018. While working for major event producers in Charlotte, including the U.S. National Whitewater Center prior to creating ATC10K, Mister envisioned an inclusive, accessible, and sustainable running event allowing participants to race on a closed major interstate around Charlotte's uptown. Surviving the global pandemic and seeing an increase in not only participant registration but also volunteer, community/non-profit, and sponsorship support, Mister is now on a mission to share with race directors how they, too, can grow their races and make an impact in the community where the race is being held.
