Barney “Scout” Mann is on the podcast to talk about a lifetime of being in the outdoors. His new book, Journeys North, is the tale of his hike from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail. It’s more than that though… The story includes many of the hikers who crossed his path and of course his wife. Backstories help the reader understand current situations and Scout does a wonderful job at interweaving these into his story.I have since read the book. Honestly, it reads like a book of fiction even knowing the truth behind it. In the past, I have read plenty of PCT books, but this one stands out as completely capturing the culture of the trail and those who hike it.Order Journeys North on Amazon, REI or order a copy signed by the author. For more about Scout: visit his website and follow him on Instagram. If you would like more information about the National Trails System that Scout mentions in our discussion, go to http://pnts.org/new/
Lee Jacobson is on the podcast again. I wanted to get the listeners a look behind the scenes of handling a group which is dedicated to hiking, without wanting to promote people to hike the main trails. Covid-19 has currently changed getting outdoors. The first thing Washington Hikers and Climbers did is turn on post approval. This way, all posts can be vetted before approved. Also, they have stopped allowing posts asking for current conditions, as this could encourage people to overrun the trails.Listen to see the ideas Lee’s team has come up with to keep the masses entertained while stuck at home.Lee started the Facebook Group Washington Hikers and Climbers which has over 132,000 membersGroup- https://www.facebook.com/groups/washingtonhikersandclimbers/

What a fun conversation with these fine folks. In the hiking community it is so easy to become friends with hikers. This conversation was the starting of a friendship even if the four of us will never be in the same place again. We recorded at Randy Godfrey’s house in Bellingham. We talk all about ticks! Why do they bite? How to remove them? How long do they feed?Dr Ingels confirms the bullseye rash appears around a tick bite only if the person contracted Lyme Disease. Also, I ask Dr Ingels about Lyme disease and how it may affect you. He tells various symptoms of Lyme Disease as well as it’s history. What type of ticks carry Lyme? How long does a tick have to bite you in order to contract Lyme? From website-Developed by a leading naturopathic physician, Dr. Ingels has chronicled a unique integrated medicine approach to treating both acute and chronic Lyme disease. Learn about the proven results from a physician who has successfully managed his Lyme disease symptoms for more than 15 years. The statistics about Lyme disease are alarming: it is one of the fastest-growing infectious diseases in the US and it is very difficult to diagnose and treat. Millions of people worldwide suffer from its often-changing symptoms which confuse it with many other diseases. In The Lyme Solution, Dr. Darin Ingels details his ground-breaking approach to healing both acute and chronic Lyme disease.Conventional treatment protocol too often relies on toxic doses of antibiotics that may weaken your body and worsen symptoms. Dr. Ingels’ approach is to boost your body’s innate ability to heal itself. The Lyme Solution offers the latest research about the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme, but more importantly, Dr. Ingels’ approach provides a path to wellness by fortifying the gut (microbiome) and enhancing the immune system, which then strengthens the body’s ability to heal from within.Purchase the book- https://www.amazon.com/Lyme-Solution-Inflammatory-Auto-Immune-Response/dp/0735216304Website- https://dariningelsnd.comInstagram- https://www.instagram.com/dariningelsnd/Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/DarinIngelsNDWaymark Gear CompanyHeavy duty ultralight backpackshttps://www.waymarkgearco.comSix Moons DesignTents and morehttps://www.sixmoondesigns.comDon't forget to shop our Cascade Hiker Hats and Bumper Stickers!Join Me at Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=5262583Twitter @N_CascadehikingLike our Facebook Page Cascade Hiker PodcastOn Instagram Cascade Hiker PodcastCheck out Whiskey Fever: https://www.reverbnation.com/whiskeyfever The song used in the intro is 'Tall Grass' from their album Gonna Wake Up This Whole Town.
Molly Hashimotto just released her new art book, Birds of the West. Her different styles are throughout the book and show off her passion to try new media of art.She describes the difference between her etchings and her block print. Using block print with different colors brings out some amazing art.Sometimes she draws from life, but often Molly will use one of her three cameras to get some ideas. Even with pictures she tends to draw out or sketch before painting. One of my favorite parts of this book was her pictures of the habitats and she gave credit where credit was due and said the publisher came up with that idea.Molly Hashimotto has an easy to navigate website with links to her books and has prints for sale on there. While a life of adventure has traditionally been reserved for the rich and the sponsored, to the dirtbag, it's a birthright for the masses. Partly a celebration of an underappreciated subculture of hiker trash, ski bums, and vagabonds, and partly a "how to" guide for adventure on the cheap, The Dirtbag's Guide to Life is the first solid attempt to define an outdoor movement that has taken root in backpacker hostels, long trails, and climbing crags around the world.Distilling personal wisdom and practical lessons from dozens of the world’s most dedicated dirtbags, Boldly Went's first print publication is for anyone who dreams of hitchhiking trips through Patagonia and summers spent trail running in Montana, but who can’t be bothered by mainstream frivolities like expensive clothes and basic hygiene. The guide confronts some of the biggest personal and practical problems for people living the dirtbag dream - financing adventure, building a career path that is flexible enough to accommodate your passions, navigating challenges with relationships and responsibilities, and maintaining a sense of meaning when you decide to center your existence on life outside. In the process, it gets to the heart of why outdoor culture matters as a way of life that rebuilds a sense of humanity and connection in an increasingly fractured and technologized world.-From websiteWebsite- https://www.boldlywentadventures.com/dirtbagguide.htmlPodcast- https://www.boldlywentadventures.comInstagram- https://www.instagram.com/dirtbagguide/Six Moons DesignTents and morehttps://www.sixmoondesigns.comWaymark Gear CompanyHeavy duty ultralight backpackshttps://www.waymarkgearco.com

Emory Wanger is the host of The By Land Podcast. I found his podcast from an article in the Washington Trails Magazine - https://www.wta.org/news/magazine/features/outdoor-podcasts-to-inspireEmory grew up day hiking with his dad, who ran a kids camp and he was therefor always outside. One of there horse rides as a youth, he crossed paths with some folks who were thru hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. He has since hiked the entire trail. After he exited his career in the military, he dedicated some time helping soldiers find the outdoors. This same program was eventually the catalyst to his own thru hike. His podcast came after his PCT hike and is a blend of hiking, outdoors and hunting. Elaine Bissonho is known as Brazil nut on the trail. She grew up in Brazil and currently lives in Bend, Oregon. She became the third female to earn her double triple crown from ALDHA West this past Fall at the Gathering, putting her in the ranks with Anish and Yogi.We talk about her 2018 hike on the PCT when she hiked from Mexico to Canada in 66 days. She pushed herself, knowing that Anish had done it in 60 days. Brazil Nut took three showers on this thru hike and a bunch of cold plunges in various lakes along the route. She talks about her fears on trail. How she handles them and what are her fears.A friend in Boston encouraged her to go on her first hike. “I don’t hike!” was Brazil Nut’s first response. Crazy to think that. They ended up hiking in New Hampshire and she went on many hikes in that area afterward. The White Mountains were her first love.Stretching is very important for Brazil Nut. She would use her elbows to work on her legs and she tries to keep her feet lubed up. One of her favorite spots, the Enchantments, is only 13 miles away. Hiking, running and skiing are easy to do in her hometown. Her three 200 mile ultra marathons are known as the triple crown of 200’s. The Tahoe 200, the Bigfoot 200 and the Moab 240 Endurance Run.I paused to note Candice had just raced the Hurt 100 ultra marathon in Hawaii about a week before our conversation. She brings up her goal to get the supported FKT on the 800 mile long Arizona Trail this year.Humans of Ultrarunning 12 or 13 great episodes. We mention Courtney Dauwalter from episode one, Gene Dykes from her most recent episode and her bonus show about Candice’s own solo/unsupported FKT on the Wonderland Trail.I also asked Candice about women’s strength in long distance running and hiking and what are her fears when out alone.Podcast on Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/humansofultrarunning/Follow her on Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/runcandicerun/Podcast website- http://humansofultrarunning.comEverything Candice Burt- http://www.wilddefined.comSix Moons DesignTents and morehttps://www.sixmoondesigns.comWaymark Gear CompanyHeavy duty ultralight backpackshttps://www.waymarkgearco.comJoin Me at Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=5262583Twitter @N_CascadehikingLike our Facebook Page Cascade Hiker PodcastOn Instagram Cascade Hiker PodcastCheck out Whiskey Fever: https://www.reverbnation.com/whiskeyfever The song used in the intro is 'Tall Grass' from their album Gonna Wake Up This Whole Town.
Ras and Kathy of Team Ultrapedestrian were back on the podcast to talk about their book 98 Days of Wind. Their attempt to yo-yo the Grand Enchantment Trail ended amidst a forest fire, extreme heat and health issues.Despite not completing their attempt, I couldn’t help but talk about their positive outlook on life and even on the hike itself. It rings through the book as a positive motivation! I compared the book to a modern day diary, using social media posts as a part of their daily journaling.Buy the book- http://www.lulu.com/shop/ras-kathy-vaughan/98-days-of-wind-the-greatest-fail-of-our-life/paperback/product-23627583.htmlFollow them on Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/ultrapedestrian/Six Moons DesignTents and morehttps://www.sixmoondesigns.comWaymark Gear CompanyHeavy duty ultralight backpackshttps://www.waymarkgearco.com
Dr Hillary Lampers is a Naturopathic doctor based in Boseman, Montana; with a small clientele in Snohomish, Washington. She is married to Ryan Lampers and they have two daughters. Ryan and Hillary have a great podcast which I listen to called Hunt Harvest Health. One of my favorite episodes of their show is the show where Hillary reads a blog post of hers called My Husband’s Mistress. The premise of the blog is her dealing with the absence of her husband during long bowhunting trips. Ultimately, she comes to grips with the fact that he is doing something positive for both him and their family. My first question is - How can backpackers get Vitamin “I” out of their packs? She recommends some herbs for inflammationor muscle skeletal problems like Turmeric and Boswellia. She is very pro CBD which can fix a swelling issue over time. Ibuprofen or Aspirin can give the body a quick coverup, but will never fix the issue. Hillary relates CBD to a food. People, who have an inflammation issue, should use a CBD daily in order toDiet before and during a backpacking trip is another great way to help with inflammation. Cutting out sugar will help tremendously. “Create a plentiful plant diet with adequate protein and lots of good fats,” she tells us. Fats can help with inflammation so eat plenty of extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, and a good Omega 3 source like Krill or fish oil.How Often should people use CBD in order for it to help?Matt Kleman was on the Hunt Harvest Health Podcast episode 74 talking about the medicinal benefits of Cannabis. He recommends you use CBD like a food, daily, in order to fill your receptors and give your body what it needs. Once your body gets enough, you will not need to take as much.So CBD will need to be taken a month or two before you have a big hike or backpacking trip in order to assure you body will be ready for the inflammation.Be on the lookout for Kleman’s CBD on http://huntharvesthealth.com where they will be selling a THC FREE CBD.What are your tips for making a green drink to use on the trail? Most of the green drinks made to mix with water on the market toady are freeze-dried. The best way to make your own would be to create a powder after dehydrating using a blender. You still need to choose the right mix for yourself. It is important that you enjoy what you ingest. Most greens are bitter, so keep that in mind.Other meals can easily be procured with a dehydrator. Kevlar bags are what her husband uses on the trail to rehydrate the meals in the bag. What do you think about using kinesio tape?Dr Hillary Lampers has used the tape herself and thinks it helps a lot. It will give pressure and security to the area and allows the muscles to work better.Hikers may have a few places they might want to use kinesiology tape. The shoulders, hips, knees and ankles are all easy places to use the tape.Do you have any ideas for foot pain while hiking?Every person is so different, so this was a hard question to answer vaguely. Understand your own feet and how the flexibility and bones work for your style of walking. What happens to your center of gravity when you have a pack on your back. Shoes are made as on boot or shoe and they are not set up for multiple people’s issues. Keep your feet dry and aired out for best case scenario.Website- http://huntharvesthealth.comInstagram- https://www.instagram.com/huntharvesthealth/Sthealthy Hunter- https://www.instagram.com/sthealthyhunter/Six Moons DesignTents and morehttps://www.sixmoondesigns.comWaymark Gear CompanyHeavy duty ultralight backpackshttps://www.waymarkgearco.com
This interview starts out with interviewing some of the kids who did a multi-day backpacking trip from Stevens Pass to North Fork Sauk River Trail. It was fun trying to get the kids to chat and their stories are relatable to anyone who backpacked as a kid!Their parents come on and talk about the program, how and why they created it. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Darrington, it is a small town nestled between towering mountains and somewhat cutoff from far stretching neighboring towns. They really wanted a program to get kids into the outdoors without too many restrictions. Creating their own has been a great choice for them.Follow them- https://www.facebook.com/darringtonoutdoors/Contact them- darringtonoutdoors@gmail.comSix Moons DesignTents and morehttps://www.sixmoondesigns.comWaymark Gear CompanyHeavy duty ultralight backpackshttps://www.waymarkgearco.com
Mount Rainier Volunteer Nordic Patrol is discussed this episode with Dennis DuBois. He has been a part of the organization for more than ten years, so he is very educated on the subject. The Nordic Patrol is in place for preventative search and rescue. In most cases, they deal with lost explorers or groups that have split up.Winter explorers should be concerned and knowledgeable about avalanche safety and conditions. They might want a shovel, snow probe, Beacon, map of the are and the typical essentials.Terrain selection is key. Dennis talks about the variety of terrain at Paradise. Some people want to head straight up to Camp Muir, but it one doesn’t need to go there on their first trip.It is surprising how easy it is to get separated from your group. Nordic Patrol often heads out to find the missing party, who is looking for the other part of the party, who had reported in the first place.Join the Nordic Patrol- https://www.nps.gov/mora/getinvolved/nordic-patrol.htmSix Moons DesignTents and morehttps://www.sixmoondesigns.comWaymark Gear CompanyHeavy duty ultralight backpackshttps://www.waymarkgearco.com

Crown Jewel Wilderness - Creating North Cascades National Park (NCNP) is the perfect book for a live podcast recording. Lauren Danner, the author, is very educated on this subject. It is obvious as she speaks, she did a bunch of homework to make this a complete book.Would Glacier Peak be inside NCNP? How about the lowland timber sheds like the Suiattle River, Stehekin, and Cascade River? Well, we may know the answers to these today, but listen in as Lauren describes the changes throughout the years.Get the book:On Amazon- https://www.amazon.com/Crown-Jewel-Wilderness-Creating-Cascades/dp/0874223520Follow Lauren on social media:Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/wildernesswithinher/Twitter- https://twitter.com/WildWithinHerWe raised $425 dollars at this live event which we donated to pnt.orgJosh Fichter played music before the show and donated ALL of his earned cash to the cause as well!

Treeline Review is like the NPR of gear reviews. Liz Thomas and cofounder Naomi Hudets love outdoor gear and disliked having to look at multiple places for different reviews. Instead of researching the gear item itself, Treeline researches, analyzes, and then does a meta-review of the other reviews of that item that are floating around out there in the ocean of information that is the internet. What Treeline Review does is figure out where there’s overlap between different professional reviewers and amateur reviews. So unlike a lot of gear review sites, they are not about breaking news stories about the newest, gnarliest, most intense gear, but more about putting all these reviews into perspective. Liz said their ultimate goal is saving people time and money.Liz talks about the idea of buying less gear and having a better impact on the World. Getting the right gear the first time reduces the environmental impact with old purchases ending up in landfills.Treeline Review has a great Inclusivity Mission:Creating a space where everyone can feel empowered in the outdoors. We researched the field of gear reviews out there and sometimes it’s got a very bro-y tone. And gear stores themselves, even mainstream ones, tend to feel like a bro-y space, which is one reason (in addition to stores actually having my size and color preferences) I prefer to shop for gear online because I don’t want to be mansplained to. I’m an Asian American woman. When I first got into the outdoors, I had to actively repress my thoughts and feelings about not seeing anyone who looked like me in REI catalogs because it wasn’t really talked about in the outdoor industry in 2005.Website- treelinereview.comInstagram- instagram.com/treelinereview/Facebook- facebook.com/TreelineReviewWaymark Gear CompanyHeavy duty ultralight backpackshttps://www.waymarkgearco.comSix Moons DesignTents and morehttps://www.sixmoondesigns.com
